Thank you so much Jess' Wife and Urabisswife! I keep forgetting no news is good news. But yea I just can't wait to see him only 22 more days till he graduates

  • rikki_100113

And kcowdin he told me what week and the day he was on when he called so from there i have been able to see what happens on that week or that day due to some websites that i have found.

For any type of test in boot camp, if you fail, you always get a second chance to pass.  The Navy invests a lot of money getting recruits to RTC, they want them to succeed.

    Well, except drug tests.  Ha.

  • rikki_100113

So what about A school if its delayed do they still get paid while they are waiting for school to start?
  • UrabissWife

hey they still get paid while waiting to class up. they may not be in class but they get qauls done and stand watch and not to mention they clean clean clean :)

  • Anti M

They even get paid when they take regular leave, or are sick.  I had surgery and was on convalescent for 30 days after that, and was paid, and didn't use up my regular "vacation" leave.

Downside, I've worked up to 72 hours straight, and there is no overtime pay.

  • rikki_100113

So I got three letters in the mail from my SR and we were told that his schooling was 35 days and now its 8 weeks so I am very frustrated but I guess thats what I signed up for. But now I just need to find out if I should go down to his schooling in Pensacola and get married so I can be on his orders

  • abuon18

Rikki, that's only an extra week of schooling so that's really not too bad. They'll be able to use their phones and computers so communication will be much better once he's in A school not like it is now while he's in boot camp. Also remember that his class time does not include hold times so while he may actually be in school for 8 weeks, he could be waiting to start class for a couple of weeks to a couple of months... Or he could start right away. He won't know until he gets there.

But I would suggest, as I'm sure most of the other ladies on here would, figuring out a time to get yourself to PCola and get married while he is in A school and before he gets his orders. It will make your lives much easier in the long run. Good luck! And congratulations on getting your letters!
  • Dina0106

How fast can you get Tri-care figured out after Deers? I need to set up a doctor's app in a few weeks.

  • Jess' Wife

Dina it is immediate after you are enrolled in deers (get your military Id)
  • Anti M

Dina, enrollment is nearly immediate.  You need to call Tricare for your region and find out if they want you to have a referral or not.  Standard, no, prime, yes, unless you're being seen on base.  Ask them to send you a handbook if you don't have one yet.

I get a little frustrated with Tricare and referral appointments.  Good luck.

  • UrabissWife

Rikki I agree with abuon18....I would suggest you get to Pcola ASAP and make sure you are on his orders, so he doesn't end up going over seas and then have unaccompanied orders.. which means you can not join him. its a possibility so it best to be safe than sorry

  • Anti M

Not that he can't get overseas accompanied orders if married, just that it is far, far less likely.  I'd be down there week three, and have him put in his chit week one.

  • Dina0106

Thanks everyone, I did call and was able to be assisted.

  • Anti M

Tricare can be very helpful when they want to be.

  • meagan5220

Rikki, is your sailor an AM? lol my husband was told it was going to be like 40 days and then he got there and it was 8 weeks! but anyways he ended up staying there about 12 weeks with hold time. I would say try to get down there about 2 or so  weeks after he gets there so he has time to phase up. and he NEEDs to get that chit put in! Some LPOS and instructors there will tell them not to, tell him to find someone that makes him do that paperwork, we almost didn't get married because of him listening to 6 instructors saying not to do the paperwork but the Chief freaked out when he heard he hadn't done it.

  • abuon18

When they say how many days a class is they mean how many days they actually HAVE class- so even though the class is 8 weeks it's still 40 days, Because they only have class on weekdays (Mon-Fri, 5 days a week). They aren't referring to the total length of time they will be there.
  • rikki_100113

Megan5220 he is not an AM he is an aviations Boatswains mate which I think is an AB? I'm not so sure on that which I should find that one out but he was told by a petty officer at basic that his school was anywhere from 52 to 4 days. Also what do you mean by instructors telling him to not do the paperwork? And I what chit does he need to put in for that would allow him to get married? Also how would I know when he has that chit approved? And I guess I need to do some research on getting married in Pensacola.

  • Anti M

It is called a special request chit, he will know what it is.  Some of the instructors just say, "Go get married, don't bother with the chit".  Unfortunately, this can have bad consequences at a training command which has rules about that.

He just asks for the blank cit and how to fill it out.  He will let you know when it is approved, it has to be signed by several people.

  • Knowledge seeker

    Hey everyone!
I was wondering if anyone knew about getting married while being in a-school.
In order to move with them after do you need to be married before they get their orders.
    What's the process?
    ... Soo many questions!!
  • rikki_100113

Ahh I will tell him to do that when I see him in like 20 days!!!! LOL but thank you Anti M. I now see it better of a choice to get married while he is in a school since its longer now than we were told.

  • meagan5220

Rikki, exactly what Anti M said! the chit sorry I wasn't specific. But It was literally days before I was supposed to come down and the chief was like if she isn't here tomorrow you cant get married. then he finally caved and said if one of the LPOs would let him leave before liberty was called Monday he could get married. Luckily one of them felt bad for giving him the wrong info and let him sign out early and go get married.

He will know when its approved, if your sailor is like mine you might have to kick his butt in gear and make him get some of it handled lol. As far as getting married in Pcola its pretty easy google Escambia county clerk marriage or something like that and it will pop up with all the info you need for that county. :)

knowledge seeker, lots of information up in the discussions :) where is your sailors a school?

  • Knowledge seeker

I know lol my email is all backed up! But umm he is in Great Lakes still and is on hold for 3 weeks then school is 31 days

Hello, My husband and I have been living in San Diego for a little over two months now and it has been great. He is set to go out on his first underway for 5 nights at the end of this month and I am trying to prepare myself for the fact that he will be deploying sometime soon. I am pretty good at coming up with the non practical stuff, thinking about care packages and that sort of thing. But any advice on anything practical would be great. Is it important for us to set up power of attorney, most of our bills are in both our names already. Is there anything you guys wish you would have done before your first deployment? Thanks so much!

  • UrabissWife

Im right there with you mrs.jane! about that time to get everything situated for deployment... there is a compass class that so many people say to go to. it helps with deployment and the area around you . all that fun stuff. I can send you the link to get you into the class on your base. if you would like. they give you a big ol packet with a check list for deployment :)

  • Anti M

Are you signed up with the ombudsman and the FRG (Family Readiness Group)?  They do pre-deployment classes and have activities for the families during the deployment.

So not feeling so very upbeat today! I haven't heard from my SR in 2 1/2 weeks which I know for some people thats not that long but I was so used to hearing from him on Saturday since he left but he hasn't called yet and it makes me sad. I mean I still get his letters and I am hoping for one this Wednesday but I just hope that I get a phone call soon :( Oh and only 17 more days till PIR

  • rikki_100113

So has anyone stayed at the Navy Lodge for PIR? My future mother-in-law and myself are staying there but I didn't know if anyone else has stayed there? Also we are not military so would that be a problem the only one who is military is my fiance?

  • Anti M

You can stay at Navy Lodge, you just give them his name and graduation date.

  • Jenn_NicksWifey

He should not plan on getting married PIR weekend.  He'll have to find out from his chain of command at his A School as to what the requirements are.  Each A school is different and the requirements change without much notice.  The best source of info will be his chief at A school and if that person is not forthcoming or easy to reach, try the chaplain at A school.

DON'T CLICK ON THE PHIL HUERTAS POST IT'S A VIRUS!!!!

  • fierssej

After months of preparing myself, the day is finally here. My boyfriend ships for the RTC tomorrow, so we are going for a fancy dinner and saying our goodbyes from the hotel tonight. I'm so proud of him, but I'm really sad to see him go. But ready or not, here it comes. I'm gonna stand with my head held high and always remember that he loves me, even through the worst. Does anyone else here have their man leave this week? I'd love to have the chance to surround myself with girls going through the same!

Does anyone know how to update my address for DEERS & my husband's LED? He went online and logged into his (mypay) account but couldn't figure out how to change my address? Does anyone know what office I should call or have a number? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Jenn_NicksWifey

  • Anti M

Probably LES if he was on  mypay.

  • ohwhere

I forget what it's called by LED or something like that is where it shows my husband's earnings each month.

  • Dina0106

My husband came home today and told me he needed a copy of our mil housing lease so that his BAH could fixed. It seemed last pay period we received less than we should have. Then he also tells me that someone in the "office" told him that once he signed a lease and BAH changes to CA that makes him a resident?? Which leaves me a little confused because we're still registered to vote in FL, DL in FL, and ca info as well. We weren't really interested in changing residency so I don't see how that even makes sense. We have only been out here for about 2 weeks.

Is this correct? I thought our residency situation would be fine as long I did not try to get a job here or anything. Especially for him, with the service member's relief act, I don't see how being here on PCS orders makes us residents.

  • Dina0106

*Car info as well not ca info*

  • Anti M

Signing a lease will not change his residency.  Someone is wrong.

You can get a job in CA and not be a resident, although some states would tax your CA pay (FL didn't when I was there).

I've changed residency before, including to CA as a dependent,  the process is simple, but not so simple you'd do it on accident.

  • Dina0106

Thanks Anti M, that's what I thought as well. Even basic residency (moving to another state on your own) takes at least 6 months for it to make you a resident in most cases.

  • UrabissWife

dina :  signing a lease wont change his residency. but b/c he has hard orders you are technically a resident in that state. its kind of confusing. like our car was still registered for Idaho, and we still paid state taxes for there, but when I started school here in Washington (right when I moved here) I was considered a resident b/c of his orders.  so I didn't have to pay out of state tuition.

  • Anti M

The tuition thing doesn't establish residency, it is a benefit given to military spouses in some states.  In California, it was one year, then I did have to switch over to CA.

Did you pay any state taxes to WA?

  • xoxo_mariana

Hi ladies, I need help. My husband has finally received his orders and they are for San Diego, we are on the waiting list for military housing through Lincoln military Housing and the wait is 3-5 months, I was thinking I would wait until housing became available to go out there but he went to the fleet and family support center at the base where he is currently doing a-school and was told (and even encouraged) that he can take his family with him when he reports to his first duty station and that he will be given 10 days of housing at their on base hotel so he has time to find temporary housing until THEIR housing becomes available. I guess that's an option. Just don't think it's a wise one... He is so eager to have us with him already and I don't want to discourage him or shut him down. The lady at fleet and family support said that it being summer it was a good time to move (he is PCSING late july) since we have a 5 yr old starting Kindergarten in august. I have called the ombudsman numbers we were given and have been unable to reach them. Can someone please advise me on this???
  • Dina0106

Be prepared to pay upfront for the 10 day stay, but the Navy will reimburse you later. So if you are planning on finding a place keep that in mind for rent and deposits and what not. I can honestly say housing is beyond packed unless the command can pull some strings for you guys you might be in for a wait. It shouldn't be long because PCSing does give you priority. I would say move and get settled as soon as possible. You never know when he might go on deployment, we barely just got here together and my hubby's already planning on being gone sometime. What base will he be at?
  • meagan5220

Also, another thing to think about is if you move over there and find temp housing, is trying to find somewhere that will let you out of your lease for free to move on base. Some apts and landlords do it, but I have seen many families where I am that got temp housing and then got baes housing and had to pay to break the lease, reject housing, or find someone else to take over their lease. Just something to consider and add in to the equation if yall move early when looking for rentals. An important question to ask :)

as far as residency no signing a lease doesn't change your status, neither does tuition :) I am pretty sure WA doesn't have an income tax. And I think their taxes on cars are much lower as well. If I remember correctly :)

  • xoxo_mariana

Thank you all for the info. It was really helpful! It's good to know these things! @Dina0106 my hubby will be at Coronado.
  • mrs.jane.rad

Xoxo: My husband is on North Island also, we've been here about 3 months. We are living in non military housing to be close to family who were already living out here but if not for that we would definitely gone with base housing to be closer to Coronado. As Angie said the navy will only pay to move you once but when we came out they offered to put our stuff in storage until we found a permanent place and then (as I understood it) they would move it to our new place. I'm pretty new to all of this but if you have any questions feel free to message me. Good luck!
  • Anti M

He should ask about storing your things in SD until housing opens.  You are allowed an express shipment of things (dishes, bedding) you would need until housing opens up.  You can also check the Lincoln Housing "hot list"... sometimes things open up right away.

We rented off base, hubby commuted by motorcycle from Birdland, which is above Mission Valley, across from Linda Vista.  He was stationed on North Island; we weren't interested in Navy housing  I'd been raised in it as a child,  and preferred the nice condo we found.
