andrewsmom: check out the discussions for the Nuke Moms group. Lots of info on places to stay/things to see at Goose Creek/Charleston area. I also see a discussion above on the Days Inn..
We just spent the weekend, in Goose Creek, we Stayed at Fairfield Inn & Suites, 10 minutes away from base, price was about $80/night, which included breakfast and internet, would definately go back. One day we took a trip to Mount Pleasant, about a 30 minute drive to Patriots Point, Naval Museum home of the USS Yorktown, air craft carrier and SS Seawolf Submarine. Well worth the trip. - Also enjoyed a great meal at Reds outside on the deck.
I tried the below deal for a wireless printer shipped to Goose Creek - it worked.
The deal expires today - Saturday the 26th - so this is the last day.

Add this printer to the cart on sale for $59.99 (regular price is $99.99):
Dayami~My son is starting a Power School class on March 3rd. Not sure if your son/daughter will be in the same class but just thought I'd let you know :)
andrewsmom/sue~ I always stay at the Hyatt Place Hotel. It's brand new...just opened in April last year. The price is very reasonable (89 bucks with AAA card) and includes breakfast and internet. It's only a 10 minute drive to Goose Creek from this location in No. Charleston so I like it for that reason too :)
Thanks jajajo50! :) I might be wrong about this but doesn't Power School start every 6 weeks? So if that's the case then there should only be one date in March right? Or am I completely mixed up? haha
Power School starts every 8 weeks give or take a holiday or two. The new class usually starts the Monday after a Power School graduation. The last graduation was Feb 25. So Monday Feb 28 the new class would begin but only those that need math refresher usually begin then and on Thursday (Mar 3 ) the rest would go in for briefings and book assignments with the regular classes beginning the next Mon (Mar 7). At least this is how it has been for the last 2 or so years.
Good morning Dayami~ Glad that Dana could clear up the time frame on power school because I didn't know the answer to your question. So it sounds like you might have a sailor that's going to be in my son's class! That's so cool :) Oh and thanks Dana for clearing that up. I learn something new all the time here!
How long is A school? My son just started that at the beginning of Feb. and I'm not sure how long that lasts. Thanks for any info. that you can give me.
A School is 14 weeks for MM and 24 weeks for EM and ET. Power School is 24 weeks for all rates and Prototype is 24 weeks for all rates usually but lately can be up to 2 months longer depending on the plant operating and classes progressing in a timely fashion. The time between classes is anyones guess these days.
Has anyone else had a son or husband in A school that is finding it extremely difficult? Thank you for the time frame on the length of the different school phases.
crmom - Every one of those that are at Goose Creek are the cream of the crop. Their ASVAB scores were the best of the best and that is why they were chosen to be Nukes. Now...that said, doesn't mean that these new sailors have that great of studying skills and many of them don't. A-school is 8 hours a day of stuffing information into their brains as fast as they can and then 2-4 or more hours a day of then study time to get it even deeper into their mind. It is stressful to take on that much information in such a short amount of time and so many will say it is difficult and other will say it is just stressful.
Thank you for relieving some of my worries. My son is above average, but he's far from genius level, and his study skills during high school were non-existent. Needless to say this is the hardest challenge that he's ever faced because his nose has to stay to the grindstone. I just wanted to make sure that he didn't get into this program mistakingly since he seems to be struggling somewhat. From what I understand the frustration he's having is the amount of information to be learned in such a short amount of time. He's used to getting by without much academic effort on his part so this is like a wall that he's run into and he has to figure out how to climb over it with newly acquired "study skills" which he hasn't ever really used. Thanks again for the words of wisdom. I'll keep praying for him.
I feel silly, but I am counting the days until my son starts Power School--he starts Thursday. He's had a month of t-track, and I know he too has been counting the days. Then again, once his nose is back to the grindstone, he will be wishing for some down time. Oh, well, he's still looking forward to it.
Yes, crmom, somehow he will get it. My son's study habits were practically non-existent, too, but he's done quite well so far. (Math Honorman in A School, if I may brag!!) Hoping that continues.
I sure hope that yall are right about him getting it. I'm praying that he'll just make it through with high enough grades to complete the program. I'm pretty positive that he won't get any honors, but WOW! what an accomplishment, because I've heard that the coursework is very tough. I just hope that my son makes it through the program because he's never worked so hard in his life on anything....besides body building, which isn't helping him out right now. He told me that he's at the building studying and doing his homework from 7 until midnight on most school nights so I know he's giving it all that he's got. That's a first academically for him. He dropped out of college after one year because he hated it and didn't see the relevance of Western Civilization, English I, etc. to the rest of his career/life. The Navy was Plan B and there is no Plan C. He HAS TO make it. I'll be praying extra hard for him for awhile. I loved the "helicopter mom" reference, and I needed that chuckle after a long day of teaching. That's me and I'm trying hard to stay far off in the background but gosh it's hard and painful sometimes. Thanks again to both of you for the words of wisdom, encouragement, and advice. Congrats to both of your sons for doing so well!!
crmom I have been where you are at. My heart just sunk when he texted telling me he did so poorly on his first quiz. I definately lost sleep those first couple weeks. But a statement he made is "I have to learn how to study the Navy way.' The next test was passing, then the next was (after I had to ask about it.) "Oh I got a 3.5" I will be praying for peace in your heart and also for your sailor to learn everything he needs to know. I also often told my son, "What one can do another can do. Keep that I can do attitude."
Thank you so much to each person that responded to my worries with reassurances and encouragement. I learn something new every time that I read these messages and it's much more comforting to know some details about what to expect from this school experience. He's told me that he goes for help almost every night to figure out what he needs to correct and to learn the "Navy way" of working out the problems. I'm glad that he's being challenged and that he doesn't have a choice to take the easy way out. I can't thank all of you enough for your words of advice and all of the information. At least now I'll be able to encourage him with more knowledge on my part about what his program is like. I'll still keep praying really hard though!!!! :) I'm trying to transition from being a helicopter mom to being a "jet mom" that just flies over really fast and makes a loud noise,(just encouragement), and that doesn't fly over unless needed. It's hard to adjust to a grown son that lives far away but I'm getting there. Thanks again.
We just stayed in a 4 bedroom at Foster Creek. It has one full bath in the Master bedroom and one full bath at the end of the hall . So two full baths. It has a kitchen, dining room, livingroom and laundry also. They are very comfortable and great price. The couch in the living room also makes into a bed, but we didn't use it.
My son recently got to Goose Creek (3/4 PIR). He had told us at graduation that he was an MM (that was what he wanted), but his address is FN. He said FN is part of MM and he should be MM after his first A school. I'm confused and concerned. From what I've read on the Navy website FN is Fireman and looks to be part of MM but I'm not sure how this all ties together. Can anybody enlighten me? Thanks
Digeo is an EM and went in as an E-3. It was great to see the "Red" stripes on his blues when he was home on leave and to be married! He and his friend have "Red" stripes, though his friend is an E-2 at the moment. They have different MOS.
My son is in about his 5th week of A school and beyond frustrated with basic electronics. Math was not a problem but he has not well on the BE tests. All the extra studying is not helping him to grasp the concepts. Passing this course would be a miracle at this point. He is home for a quick weekend to get his car and civilian clothes and sounds so much more discouraged than when we saw him at PIR. I understand completely how you feel and the frustration of your sailor. My son was an excellent student in highschool but never had to cram in new subjects at such a fast rate that there is no time to master the material before moving on. Overwhelmed and uncertain how to survive is how he feels. Praying for God to assist Him in mighty ways and give him the clarity of mind he needs to begin to grasp this stuff.
I'll be praying for your sailors and for you, Val & crmom, and all the other moms and nukes who are struggling. I'm sure it is more common than not to have difficulty, the material and the pace are so challenging. I expect every sailor will hit some rough spots along the way.
@Val, prayers for him. It may take a bit to settle in and learn how to study. It is very overwhelming and takes a while to get used to the schedule. He will get there as each of the Sailors have done and will do. Hang in there!
Got a call from my son on Saturday and he was about fuming. MMs had a machinery test and sounded to be more of an essay but the instructor was looking for only certain words and for each magical word that you didn't write, he was docked points. He knew the information backwards and forwards but didn't use the EXACT words the instructor wanted to see. Lowest score so far on all of his testing - 3.3 !!! Not a happy camper at all.
Geez Penny! Mine got hit for someone else using his paper in class to do problems on. At the end of the day all paper is turned in, nothing is thrown in a trash can. Someone used a piece of his paper to do math problems on the back. Threw it in the trash can when finished. A BIG NO NO! Because my sons name was on the other side he got into trouble. (security issue - everything is incinerated) Cant wear civies until next week now. He was mad as fire!
My son got dinged for seemingly minor stuff while in A school. He later told me that his SLPO said that those dings are for "Procedure". They really beat "procedures" into their heads. He's an MM too and he had trouble with math and could come up with the right answers 99% of the time BUT if he skipped or changed any part of the formula to arrive at the correct answer, he got an "ABA" or "answer by accident" and no credit for the correct answer!! He didn't follow the proper Procedure.
I think thats all about doing it the Navy way. What seems petty to us could possibly lead to something more serious down the line. He's doing great on the math so far. Last test was a 3.8.. He's down to no study time required. Hes more interested in playing paint ball against the math teacher and grilling venison. He seems to have no worries. I'm sure eventually something will slip. LOL! But he has been told that his confidence comes of as a smug attitude. Oops! The Navy will fix that too, I'm sure~
Yep, we always accused our son of having "little man syndrome" cause he's only 5'5" (he says 5'6" as if an inch matters) and his wife is 5'9". He would tend to come off as a little cocky! Those instructors sometimes have a way of taking the wind out of their sales!!!
No "little man syndrome" in my nuke - he's 6'2", red haired and covered in freckles ... kind of stands out to the typical nuke. So far mine has scored a 3.78 avg. in math but with his last test in the machinery part being only 3.3, it's going to take a couple of aces to get his average back up to 3.8 where he wants it. Have to admit that I'm glad that he doesn't have the attitude of "2.5 is still alive" !!!
Are there scores similar to that of a highschool GPA, with 4.0 being perfect? I loved the 2.5 is still alive comment, I believe I heard that a time or two the year my son was in college. Needless to say, one year is all he did.
I think it is but every time my fiance gets a 3.0 and I try to tell him it's a B and it's good, he doesn't think it is. So yes, but it's not the same standards as A, B, C, D, F.
Yup, 4.0 is an A but 3.3 isn't good enough for my son. lol You have to realize one thing, the higher your GPA, the higher you are on the list after Prototype to get the port you want. They start at the highest GPA and work their way down when filling spots. If you are at the 2.5 is still alive and you really don't care if you are in Guam or Connecticut or Georgia or a sub or a carrier ... congratulations, you're still a NUKE!!! But if you only want to be on a fast attack sub out of Washington State, then you better get some of the highest grades. That said, it still depends on the needs of the Navy at the time of your graduation!!!
Hey TxLady, welcome aboard to the red headed tall nukes. Now my son won't be the only one. lol I'll friend you to ask more about him so I can have my son look for him. What rating will he be? MM, ET or EM
Penny he will be ET!!! He will have a long next TWO years! I sent the information you gave me to my son's Facebook! He is lucky he has a person he went to H.S. with that was going thru the NUKE program, she just got medically discharged but still lives in Charleston, so she showed him around yesterday.
Well my son and I got to Skype today for the first time it sure was nice! For 33 whole min, just for us. He is still on InDoc and PDays at A School he won't know his start date for a few days or it might be a few weeks.
Hi TxLady, My son is ET also and about 5 weeks into A school. He just got to come home this weekend and get civilian clothes and his car. Actually he was hom from Sat am to Sun at 1:00 and had to drive back to be at Goose Creek by 8:00 for 3 hours of studying. Encourage your son during the indoc days - mine spent a couple weeks of cleaning in January before beginning classes and it seemed like forever. Have him use any extra time wisely and start studying any formulas and concepts of basic electronics that he can find for when classes finally start it will come at him fast. Skype is real nice - I wish we had it!
