Wow, I've never read anywhere about going anywhere outside of the airport after they are dropped of. Sounds like you had a wonderful day with your son. I had my son for the entrei weekend after PIR as he didn't fly to Goose Creek until Tuesday. You did almost as much with your son as I did with mine in 3 days. Sounds like great memories. My prayers are with him and you.
quiltblue, so great that you got to leave the airport instead of sitting there for what, 17 hours?? (!!!) What a great day you had with your sailor! Glad they landed safely; a fresh batch of future Nukes...now the fun really begins...
My son will be transferring out of the Nuke program. Not sure yet but he sounded relieved today when speaking with him. He desired to be in the NAVY but only went into the Nuke program because he qualified on the entrance test. He had no idea what it would be like - he was not prepared for the material at all. He said that most in his class had had some college beforehand - not fresh out of high school with no physics. He will find out on Monday or Tuesday what is available and where he will be going. Praying that God will open the door to the right field that he should really be in,
Prayers for your sailor, Val; I know the Lord has the perfect Navy job planned for him. I'm sorry he had to struggle so to get to this point; keep us posted on his new assignment...
Your son will do fine. I know several sailors who didn't make it as a nuke but went on to be very, very happy with what was offered next in their Navy experience. God will open the right door, I'm certain of it. Seen it. The best to you and your son.
Val, sorry to hear that he will be transferring out of the program. It is hard when they go into it right out of high school. We totally understand that, Diego went right from high school. He is doing well with the program, though he too has said most are older and have had college classes or already have degrees. Prayers that your son will be able to get the *job* that he wants and with find success with it. I am sure that the Navy will put him right where he is supposed to be.
Val, be very proud that your son recognized that he wasn't ready for all that that school requires. So many young adults go in for something not really knowing what they want. Will be praying that he gets stationed somewhere that has lots of possibilities for him. In our PIR one division had 7 males bail out 9 days before graduation rather than continuing in the Navy! So sad.
Wow, quiltblue...I never heard from my son that the products were all diet. I also never heard the bread was all whole wheat. The bread part makes me feel great to know. The stuff about the sweetner kind of bugs me that they don't have a choice. Too much of the artificial stuff can't be good for you. Too much of the regular stuff isn't either. I wonder why they serve soda at all. You would think they would want to discourage it since they have a captive audience and if they could break the cycle it might save them money in the long run with their health coverage. My son usually drinks water but if he does have a soda he will usually choose a 7 up.
Val, I'm a strong believer in everything happens for a reason. My son had an awful first year of college. So he didn't go back. He felt like a failure. If that hadn't happened I don't think he ever would have considered the navy.
Now that my son has arrived in GC/Charleston... how many times do they move before Prototype school or Power school? Will he move from Indoc to something else?
My son arrived there on February 1 this year and was in indoc for two weeks. While they may already be in their room in the barracks where they will be throughout A-school, they still are not ready to class up until enough MMs, ETs or EMs have arrived to make up an entire class and THEN they move on from Indoc and are given a real class number.
Whether they stay in the same room or even the same barracks after A-School, I don't know as we aren't that far along as of yet. Maybe somebody else that is currently in Power School can answer that.
However, once they complete Power School, they are required to move OUT of the barracks and either into off-site housing in Goose Creek or Ballston Spa, NY for their Prototype School.
If I remember correctly they are allowed off base they just have to be back by a specific time and be in uniform if they have not phased up yet. CHeck the discussion above about the phase upon arrival at Goose Creek.
Thank you Dana (David's Mom) for your reply on March 18 regarding prototype. My son did very well. He will be stationed in Norfolk, Va, thank God its on the east coast. We live in Florida so it makes it easier to visit him. I don't post much on here, but this group has been a great support to me. Thank you all.
So Connie, how did your son fare through the pipeline? What rating is he? And, if I may ask, what standing was he in for the class and did he get his first choice?
thanks so much; my son is still in A-school but I'm looking ahead!!
NicksMom, so they didn't have to get any dishes or anything? I was thinking abou him moving to an apartment for prototype the other day and was worried about all the things you need for an apartment.
Thanks Nick's mom for all the wonderful information. I'll encourage my son to do the same. He's already got two associates under his belt in engineering but I now that he is really wanting to finish his BS Nuclear engineering as soon as possible. I heard that if he goes sub there will be no opportunities while underway to do any classes at all and will have to wait until on extended home port to do any classes (if that is even possible).
Good Afternoon Ladies! I think I'm at the right spot - I'll ask and I guess I'll find out.
My SR sent a letter this week from BC (PIR 5/13). He did his job classification a few days before he wrote the letter - EM and ET Nuke. He said in his letter that he would be a Saturday departure from BC to A School. He also said that when we meet him at the aiport Saturday morning that we could give him his cell phone and computer. Is that true?
I'm thinking I've seen something somewhere that the new sailors aren't allowed to have cell phones and computers until they've gotten to A School and have been there for a couple of weeks. Am I wrong in this? If I am, please correct me.
Also, we're wondering when he can have his car. We would have to drive it down to S. Carolina, but again, not sure what the rules and regs are.
I'm sure one of you can help me and give me proper info for all this. I'm a big planner and I'm just trying to have "my ducks" kinda in a row for future reference.
Thanks for any help you can give me! And I'm glad to be a part of this new group!
He can have his cell and computer right away. If he has a case for the computer it should be black and any back pack should also be black. They will travel in uniform so that is the rule. They can have a car when they class up.
Elizabeth77 - Class up? I'm sure I'll figure it out in the discussion above, but right now I'm pretty tired. Had a very busy day at work and then took my daughter to have her senior pics done. It was fun, but exhausting and I wasn't even the one getting my pictures taken!
Mama C - by class elizabeth means be assigned a class section- the class he will be in for the duration of his A school. However, he will not be able to have his vehicle until he is Phase 2 which is typically four weeks from classing up provided he doesn't fail the Personal Fitness Assessments or get in any trouble. I hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask away!
Mama C, even though your son won't be allowed to drive his car until he makes Phase 2, my son found out he would be allowed to have his car on base. He flew home for leave on Christmas and drove back, and even though he was still phase 1, he was able to park it and that way it was available as soon as he phased up.
MamaC: If you drive another car to Goose Creek from another state you do not have to register the car in South Carolina, and SC does not require annual safety inspections. In most cases you do not need to get an inspection sticker from the home state either. If the parents own the car you have to write a letter giving the sailor permission to operate it and keep it on base, I would just describe the car and put the VIN number of the car in the letter. We are driving our son's car to South Carolina next month to drop it off (he is already in Phase 2).
In A school there are two sailors to a room, they sleep in bunk beds. The beds take regular twin size fitted sheets. They are provided with sheets but a fitted bottom sheet makes it easier to make the bed for inspections so we sent him sheets.
They are allowed to have phones and laptops. You can just mail them the cell phones to Goose Creek. They have to wait a few days until a student is trained to be a mail room clerk, then they get mail after that. My son bought his own laptop at the NEX upon arrival since he needed a new one anyway.
Before they leave boot camp nuke students are classified as either an EM or an ET, one of the other.
Yes Dana, I was responding to MamaC who said her son had the job classification
"EM and ET Nuke" which seemed confusing, I was just pointing out you can't be both. Thanks.
William - No, what I meant about job classification was that he signed up for both
EM and ET Nuke - he's not sure which one he'll get. I think that's what he was saying in his letter. I didn't actually talk to him, but he signed up for both. Sorry for the confusion - didn't mean to do that!
On another note, I'll get on the Nuke Mom's Group and read. Thanks for all the info here. I may as well stay here cuz eventually I'll need to be!
Thanks, sorry I confused people too with that, I apologize. They find out from Master Chief the nuclear coordinator, at about week 5 or 6. My son requested ET, EM and MM in that order, and luckily he got ET.
Hey everyone! So my boyfriend landed in Charleston yesterday afternoon. I know he is a MM. I was just wondering how everything is going to work from here on out.
Check out the discussions above. One is entitled your sailors arrival at Goose Creek. Their is also a great Nuke Moms discussion group that has girlfriends in it, too.
Diego was given his T-track schedule, classing up for Power school and graduation from Power School in February. We will be making plans to go, we are going down for a visit with him and Kelsey for the first week of July. It will be so much fun being together after not seeing them since Christmas break. It is hard to believe at times that he has been away from home since September, the time has gone by pretty quick. I am sure it hasn't for him and the others pulling long hours a day and many more during each week. There is always more to learn, that is a good thing so we are up on what is happening.
Welcome to the new moms, gf, wives!!! Glad to have you with us!
Hey Everyone! I'm heading to Charleston to visit my Sailor not this weekend, but next. Where is a good place to stay, that isn't too expensive? Last time I went I stayed at the EconoLodge in Goose Creek, and it just wasn't worth the price lol Thanks in advance for the help!! :)
You might still be able to get into the Villas. The number is posted in a discussion on places to stay in Goose Creek. Your sailor needs to make the reservations as it is on base housing.
I asked my son about getting us reservations for the Villas when we visit him next month, but the Chief told him they "suggest" that sailors those aside for people who are attending graduations. Plus our sailors are real busy and it is a trip across the base for the sailor to make a reservation. Anyway we got reservations at the Wingate. If you stay 3 nights it is 30% off if you go through their website. So it worked out to $104 a night including hot breakfast for 3, including all taxes for the hotel. Taxes are expensive in SC, it was $35 a night in hotel taxes. So when you price these places make sure they quote a total price that includes all the taxes. Some places quote a low price but then the tax is a big surprise when you pay the bill.
A less inexpensive place that includes breakfast is the Ramada.
William, I don't think there is a graduation every weekend. If Power School is this weekend there may not be one next weekend. My son made the reservation but I did all the phone calling and they are extremely helpful on the phone. It only took him a minute.
So I shipped out a package yesterday to my Sailor and had it overnighted because I wanted him to have it Saturday only to find out that they don't accept any mail or packages on Saturday. So now he won't get it until Monday which makes me very sad. I wanted him to have it today that's why I paid the extra money to have it shipped UPS next day air. :(
Cheergirl-unfortunately, that's the way the mail works. It's absolutely sucky! Just as a heads up, once the package gets to base, it has to be sorted in the mail room, which will be at least another day, then picked up by your sailor. Unless he has a personal mailbox which some people recommend. It costs extra though, not sure how much...
I was so devastated when the UPS guy called me and told me that they were closed. Our anniversary is on Sunday and I really wanted him to have something. I was busy all week and couldn't get around to it until Friday so I paid the extra to have it overnighted. I wish I didn't pay that much if I had known that.
Dang! After boot camp, I've hated snail mails services. Such a pain all the time, I swear! I hope you guys have a good anniversary though! Congrats! How long have you guys been together?
Happy Anniversary cheergirl!!! Sorry you paid extra for shipping when your Sailor won't get his package until Monday. Ugh!!
Our son is married and they have on base housing, we don't have any problems getting them their packages. I hear many stories of the single people having trouble getting their mail, some have personal boxes. Hoping he loves it when he opens it though!
My husband and I will celebrate 23 years of marriage on the 30th. The years have gone by fast, it seems like yesterday. Again, Happy Anniversary!!!
Thank you guys!!! We've been together 4 years! He's my high school sweetheart! I absolutely love him so much. Its so hard knowing that this year we won't get to celebrate together but hopefully next year. :)
The "Private Mail Boxes", PMBs, cost about $10.00 a month and they are located at the mini-exchange. Still have to go pick the mail up and boxes require the mini-exchange to be open. Not sure about it needing to be open to pick up mail.
The NNPTC mail system ( the regular mail ) is run by the command and at least some of the "postal workers" are students doing extra duties before and after classes.

And now they have two to a room in A-school I guess because there are so many Nukes.
