    hello all!

noemi---how are things going?  i hope you have found something that you like to do.

  • Sailor's Mom

What are the first days in SC like for guys
ust getting there. Do they make them turn phones off? They had them at the airport leaving yestetday. I'd appreciate any information.
  • tina41

welcome giftededucator----they are allowed to use their phones when they are in their rooms and on weekends when they have free time.   when classes start they will have to do study hours and watch duty so that will limit their free time.

if i am wrong someone please correct me.

  • Noemi(Ship 12, DIV 054)Colin<3

Tina @ Yes I do live on base. But most of the activities involve kids, but I dont have any.

Jennifaaa@ U can always go downtown Charleston there is nice restaurants and Its the oldest city an the US so its nice to walk around. :D

  • HonorHim

Tina ...sometimes the art stores have classes or event you could attend.:) There are a few of these in downtown Charleston.

  • HonorHim

Hey Noemi(Ship 12...) Here is a great suggestion...
    Mary Vance Thompson Berlin
There are whole groups of nuke wives on the base! Some are for those with kids, and some are of those who do not, and some are for all! There are exercise classes where the wives gather with the trainer and lots of friendships are forged th...ere. I remember seeing a group of wives on the N4M group that were talking about the groups with the childless wives, and they had a very active and fun social world of activities from touring Charleston together to holding potlucks in homes, reading clubs, etc. Of course, the groups change with rotations in and out, but definitely connect the person to the N4M groups for help in finding these kinds of activities. Also, local churches are another source of connecting with friends
  • HonorHim

neomi here is another one.......Chelsea Nesheim No problem. Also I know there is a craft store called the green dragon that does scrapbooking and beading classes. I will see if we can get together and ill invite her to the volleyball event. :)

Honor Him, in order to protect the identities of moms and their sailors, I would suggest that you delete your recent posts that include name links and repost them without the sources showing...

Besides Subway, are there any other fast food places?  I want to send some gift cards.

  • Noemi(Ship 12, DIV 054)Colin<3

Shades- McDonald's is on base as well. But those are the only ones near him that he would walk or take a bike if he doesn't have a car. . .

Good morning all...my son arrived in Charleston on saturday and is rooming with someone that has been there since jan....last name starts with W and may be from TN...ring any bells with anyone here...would like to connect

  • Navy Mom x3

Sam wants his motorcycle now in Goose Creek. Where can I ship his bike? Does it need to go somewhere off base or can it go to the NNPTC?
  • MN Mom of MM

My sailor had his Jeep transported to Goose Creek a few months after he arrived there.  He met the transport driver in a parking lot near the base.  I would think if a bike was being transported it could be to another bike dealership, and your son could pick it up there.  There was some talk with of my son wanting his Harley shipped down through the Harley dealership here to one in Charleston. Who if I may ask is transporting it.  The jeep was on one of those big semi trailer rigs.

  • Navy Mom x3

We found motorcycleshippers.com last night but asked Sam to do a little research on his end about where to ship it. He took the motorcycle class to get his license but can't remember where the slip is that said he passed so he has to take the class again.

Good morning everyone...My son is now in Charleston and will start A school on the 27th.  I have heard this is a tough ride ahead....glad i have this group to help.  thank you in advance

  • karent0801

Hi All!  My husband and I are going to Goose Creek for a long weekend with our son the end of the month.  Can anyone recommend a good, clean hotel not to far from base for under $100 a night?  Thanks to all and have a great day!

  • Janis

My husband & I are also going the end of this month.  Our son graduates from "A" school on the 30th.  We have discovered that there is some sort of big race (running) that weekend so it's going to be packed.  Sorry no help on hotels but I wanted to let you know that it's going to be crazy.

  • suebal MM3 USS California SSN781

Janis and Karen--my son got me a reservation at "The Villas" right there on base. It's a 2 bed, 1.5 bath villa that your sailor has to make a reservation for. You might want him to get on it right away--they fill up FAST. Avg $70/night

  • karent0801

Thanks, Sue - I had looked at Travelocity and a lot of the hotels were not available - now I understand why - big race.....I'll have my son check on The Villas!!!!!  Sounds perfect.

  • hk1853

I stayed at Wingate by Wyndham in North Charleston.  It's about 5 miles from the base, and it had a very nice breakfast.  The rooms were large and it was really clean, and I'm very picky.  I think the rates right now are around 120, but I'd check them anyways...I paid about 100 a few weeks ago because I found a sale. I had called on the Villas and they told me that they were full until the end of March, but maybe they had cancellations.  I'm staying at Mainstay Suites in a few weeks, and that's about 110 a night I believe, but it's closer to downtown, so it's probably a good 25 minute drive to the base.

  • karent0801

Thanks HK!!! I'll check out the Wingate.

  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

Karent0801 - when I went there for the PS graduation, I stayed about 1 1/2 miles up Red Bank Road right next to the Kentucky Fried Chicken and just walking distance to a big grocery store.  I'm thinking it was Day's Inn and it was only $60+ bucks a night.  If you call them directly and the gentleman answers the phone, he will give you the best price - what I found.  The rooms are either a large King with a sleeper couch or two queen beds.  Fairly quiet, breakfast buffet (it's okay) and not even 5 minutes to the base!!

  • karent0801

Thanks Penny!  Found Days Inn on-line and will call tonight!

  • navyboundkid (Class 1210MT)

I also stayed at Wingate, and it was as nice as the expedia reviews say.  I bought my package through expedia and paid about $60 a night to stay there.  I highly recommend it.

Good morning everyone! Just back from my weekend up at Goose Creek seeing my son's A-school graduation. There were a LOT of families there! It was totally awesome. I even met a couple of REALLY great Moms! It was a lovely ceremony.

The Villas was very very good! Cameron and I had a lovely time staying there--the WiFi was pretty awful, but then again, we spent the weekend with each other, not the internet. Spent Saturday roaming around Charleston and have an AMAZING lunch at the Charleston Crab House, right there on Market Street.

They are supposed to be classing up for Power School in 2 weeks, so I've already told him that as soon as he gets his grad date to make reservations for us.

I really really hated having to leave...I'm still not quite over not having him here. But we had long long long talks and both of our hearts are doing much better.

  • tina41

    hello all!!

suebal----i am happy to hear you had a wonderful time with your son!!!   it is always hard leaving them!!

  • tina41

good monday morning!!  i hope you all have a wonderful day!!!

i have a question.   do our sailors get classes off on good friday?

  • elkinsd

    Hello!

I am going to my son's A-School graduation on Friday, March 30th.  Can anyone tell me where to go for the program?  The only location I know of is the Subway/NEX.  My son did tell me that the graduation starts at 7am.  I'm staying at Staybridge Suites in North Charleston....I'm not sure how long it will take to get to the base from there...does anyone know?  Also, can anyone tell me how long the program will last?

  • suebal MM3 USS California SSN781

Hi Elkinsd - Congratulations on your son's graduation! The first one is a BIG achievement!!!!! I was just there for my son's grad on 3/16. It was awesome! The actual grad is on the base itself...just google 101 NNPTC Circle, Goose Creek, SC. The Subway/Mini-NEX is just off-base. Also, it doesn't start at 7am, it starts at 9. BUT, get there earlier because you'll need to park and then get to wherever it is they're having the ceremony. They'll be able to tell you exactly where when you get to the front gate. My son's ceremony lasted an hour--it was a large graduation.  Again, MANY congrats on your son's achievement! He should be very proud of himself!!!!!

  • tina41

    hello all!!

elkinsd---congrats on your sons graduation!!   have fun while your there.   tell him we are all proud of him and his fellow graduates!!!

  • suebal MM3 USS California SSN781

Well then, I guess I stand corrected.
  • belle

Missed my sons graduation today at A school...did anyone get any pictures of the group? I would love a picture and would gladly pay for a copy! Thanks!

  • tina41

    hello all!!

belle--congrats on your son graduating A school!!

    congrats to all the graduates!!

  • ProudCajunMom

Son starts school in two weeks. We want to come down to visit him one weekend - any recommendations on inexpensive places to stay that are close to school?

  • Kat (MM Nuke)

The Subway and mini NEX, bowling alley, and The Dive (a sports bar) are the closest things to their main campus/living dorms. It's a short walk.  the big NEX, McDonalds, gas station, etc. are about a mile down the road, but still on base.

  • Kat (MM Nuke)

ProudCajunMom- have heard there is a Days Inn very close to base that is pretty decent and close by.  He can also check to see if there is any space open at the Villas, which are right on base in the married housing area.  They are old apartments that are now rented out to visiting families.  2 and 3 bedroom units with full kitchens.  You can look at the discussion on Nuke Moms, places to stay in Goose Creek, and I think there are pictures of it.  The 2 bedroom is about $60 a night and the 3 bedroom is about $70 a night.  Only the sailor can make the reservations though, but he can use your credit card to pay for it.  I believe it's through the IT office on base.
