Don't believe the rumors...the cell phone will come home.
Don't let your Recruits get "tricked" into the idea of it either.
Many of you are not aware of this yet as you are not at that point but, It's the equivalent of contraband to bring one onboard after PIR when they return from Liberty.
That being the case, you can see why they are not allowed to keep them.
Send/mail your Recruits with a good phone card with plenty of minutes on them. Most take off minutes with each use just for using them. That is why you can get one for like 600-700 minutes for twenty bucks or so.
Plus, most will share theirs with those that don't have one. We here about that kindness over and over on the PIR groups.
Cell phones may come home in parts, battery removed (if it can be). Make sure you search pants pockets and shoes for it.
If they don't send anything home BUT the phone then it should come in a manila type padded envelope.

Air Force recruits and SOME Army recruits have the option to keep their cell phones for use for calls, but Navy recruits MUST send the cell phones home. Yes, there are some Sailors who are doing RAP duty who will pass on bad info, especially about being permitted to keep cell phones. I don't know why they would do that, but some do.

In the past, I have occasionally seen a post by someone on here who says that their SR kept their cell phone. A HUGE no no if they did and are caught with it! And they WILL be caught eventually....they are always being watched, not only by their RDCs, but by the recruit leaders who will get in big trouble themselves if they know about a situation with a SR and don't report it. So I agree with what FTLW and lemonelephant are saying here....they should NOT do it.

Heck, according to my neighbor his nephew, who is in the Army ,was able to go home for Christmas this year in the MIDDLE of basic and then go back to finish it off. The Navy is def. on a different page than the other branches lol

You will see people asking about Family Day, the Army does a day to visit with the new graduate, with a picnic and games. Navy doesn't do that. You can tell which recruits have family members familiar with other branches!

My son has a friend that recently graduated Army BC. While it's true they get cell phones, Face Time and holidays/weekends they are there much longer than our future sailors.

I understand that the Navy used to have a Family Night the night before PIR but they haven't done that in a long time....it was before my son was there in 2009/2010. Of course, now families cannot see their sailors until PIR.

I'm so excited! Hubby told me I have another letter at the house!
We got a call from Chicago last night, around 11, no one was on the other end. I was up for hours after worrying... hopefully it was just a wrong number, they are all in bed at that time, right?

lemonelephant
boyscoutmomtoo, sometimes a recruit will be permitted to make a call from the RDC's office outside of normal hours for some reason, but yes, unless he was on Watch, your recruit should have been in his rack at that time since you are in the same time zone.

Well hopefully that means it was a wrong number. Crossing my fingers. Thanks lemonelephant!

I thought I would let everyone know we stayed at Navy Lodge this weekend for PIR. Our sailor is flying out for A school......had no problems with him coming to the hotel with us today.

ibkrissi, what you're going through is absolutely natural and normal. My one and only son is currently at RTC. He left 1/21. The week leading up to his departure was absolute torture. (and the first couple days after he left too.) But I promise...it will be SO much better in a couple weeks. Once they get settled and you get a phone call and a letter or two all will be good! Be brave for him...be proud. They're doing great things. Hugs.

Navywife_Nuke, yes, recruits sometimes call on the weekend. See Phone Cards and Phone Calls. That Page gives more info on calls and even gives some times that you can relax and know that you most likely will not receive a call from your recruit.

FLNavymom,
Yep, and the Navy Core Values of "Honor, Courage, & Commitment" are a strong part of a majority of our Sailors. Just have to be aware to know why you are there and don't become distracted by things that don't matter. The Navy is an awesome career and a proud legacy to uphold! God guides and directs those on this path~~
