Our son left for BC pm December 4th, the form letter was post marked on December 11th and we got it December 15th. His first letters home came came a few days after that. The waiting sucks, but that first letter makes everything better :)

Can our sailor come with us to the Navy Lodge after PIR if she's leaving GL? She was told no, but I remember seeing something on here that she could.

Without chit permission or with?
Thank you for answering all of our questions.

U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command Graduating recruits checking into TSC no longer need a chit to visit Navy Lodge or Gateway for graduation weekend only. After that weekend, as students, they are not permitted to visit either location.

Also, the Box and the Form letter come separately. If you want to receive the Box at the first attempt at delivery-- and don't mind it being left on your porch like Marie advised below-- leave a signed and dated note for FedEx on your door~~

Hi, I was just reading through and saw the posts about cards... so can someone clarify for me what is acceptable to send.. I saw no glitter, musical, or stickers on envelop. But envelops have to be white only? and cards are ok to break up the receiving of letters only. I want to spread the word to family. And another question- why can't they have colored envelops? So much to learn!
Feb 11, 2015

Personally, I wouldn't want to draw any unwanted attention to my SR by sending colored envelopes.

wow I had no idea.... Her birthday is next week... she asked us to not send birthday cards bc she had heard she could draw unwanted attention. I thought she was kidding. Well I am glad I found all of this out. Again I had no idea that mail could be an issue. Thanks

tori'smom: Maybe make a cute "birthday card" on paper and send that instead since you asked you not to send cards....it would be unique and have a personal touch! I bet she will love it. Same for you, LauraCam....a belated birthday letter! Even though cards are usually fine to send, if your SR asks you not to send something, always honor that....they may have some tough RDCs who look to give them IT for anything and everything!

From the RTC FB notes:
WHAT CAN I SEND OR NOT SEND MY RECRUIT:
Recruits are allowed to receive letters, cards, photos, stationery, envelopes and stamps. You should first ask your recruit if he/she is allowed to receive any newsaper/magazine articles as it is up to each division's Recruit Division Commanders (RDCs) if they may or may not receive those. Sending cards in colored envelopes is fine. Sending musical cards is strongly discouraged as your recruit may not appreciate having to open such a card in the presence of his/her shipmates where everyone can hear it. Do NOT send any type of glitter in cards or letters to your recruit. Please keep in mind they are in military training and do get frequent inspections and any glitter found in their racks (bunks) will cause them to receive a negative mark. Keep your letters/cards simple. Recruits may receive one pair of contacts and one week's worth of solution to wear for photos and/or graduation. Female recruits are permitted to receive minimal makeup items to wear for photos and/or graduation. Recruits may NOT receive any other type of care packages or food items. All food items are discarded.
Two weeks in advance of my Recruit's 18th birthday, we took apart a "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" banner made of 13 linked letters and began sending her a letter a day inside a birthday card, often in colored envelopes. No repercussions from the RDCs. YMMV
If an RDC wants to assign IT to a Recruit, s/he will find a reason. Worrying that something you might do will trigger punishment is unnecessary. Nearly any Recruit would gladly do a few extra push-ups for a birthday card. The alternative, no birthday cards, could be heartbreaking. My 2¢.
