Good Morning All - I am happy to say that my son made it to RTC last night around 11p. That 2 minute call was the best sound in the world. I look forward to the days ahead and especially the "Form" letter! >^..^/p>

  • anasazigypsy

@ Renee, for my sailor PIR was 11/21. The yearbook (Keel) arrived 10 days ago
  • Tiff S

Wow!!!!! This is new info I did not know. I have no idea that it would take that long but thanks for putting this out there so I don't panic if it takes a long time to receive.
  • TML629

So I just wanted to post this I don't know if anyone else News is reporting this but due to all the Storms that have been Happening the post office is running far behind due to air port closers no flights so it may take longer for some to get there letters.

  • lionness21

Thanks for letting us know.  Regarding the yearbook...wow that's a long time!  Will seem like forever.

Rate is the same as rank for other branches (E-1 or SR, E-2 or SA, E-3 or SN). We seldom ask about rate. Rating is job or occupational specialty that one has a contract for, MA for my Sailor. After the Sailor completes "A" School, rate and rating go together to make the rate badge and then many simply refer to that as the rate, MASR, MASA, MASN and so on, for example.

The Keel (Yearbook aka Cruise Book) can take 3-4 months. The DVD of PIR can take up to 2 months.

Anti M - THANK YOU!!! Love the link too and "yes" on "...not a good thing..." for lumping petty officers and chief petty officers together. Hubby was AF Reserves and I remember there being an NCO club and a Senior NCO club on base. There is a definite distinction. :-) and the Navy especially carries on that tradition. It's important and necessary.

I understand about "rate" better now. I like how the link you gave says that rate and pay grade relate to each other rather than they are just equitable to each other.

I think that since all we deal with on the PIR groups is E-1's to E-3's we don't really look beyond that. Since they have not earned an actual rating yet we're just trying to explain rating is the occupational specialty. So I hope I can now word it better without blowing peoples minds hopefully! LOL

It has just always been one of things that bugged me, even though I read it many times on the net! I did ask my son about it once but I think I was too much in mommy mode to get it (guilty as charged, I'm getting better, really I am!) LOL

    Thanks for taking the time!

No worries.  Even a lot of sailors get confused, because how it works in daily use, how it works on paper and in posts, and how it works for testing purposes in boot camp, all have slight variations.  New sailors are always learning.

My dad was a MasterChief, so I had some idea when I joined the Navy.  Even so, what I knew was only a little stepping stone on the way to becoming a working sailor!

I rarely post here because you folks have a fine handle on this early stuff.  I went to boot camp in Orlando!

  • Vickie360

I haven't received the yearbook, shadow box, or DVD. Has anyone received the DVD of 1-30-15?
  • Renee

Nope, Vickie. I was wondering the same thing and from the posts it looks like a 3-4 month wait.

  • lemonelephant

See Division T-Shirts, Graduation Photos, The Keel, and DVD of PIR. The DVD is mailed about 6 to 8 weeks after PIR. The Keel is mailed about 12 or 13 weeks after PIR.

Good Morning! Great start of my day to check in with all of you.  Thanks for the bible quotes catmom! I'm sending that one in my next letter!

  • FLNavymom

Good morning! As of today there are 22 more wake-ups until my SR's PIR. I'm hoping for a letter today. So far we have received them on Thursdays. Weather permitting.

I hope everyone has a blessed day.

My husband is talking to a friend of his who knew someone that went to boot camp this past December and he said she had access to facebook on the weekends. I don't think this is true but he insists it is. Does anybody know?

  • WifeofaUSsailor

Scrappyjax- I have a friend who's husband was able to get on Facebook once only because it was the only way he could get in touch with some relatives for info regarding his security clearance. Unless there is a rare situation like that no they don't have any access to Facebook.
  • BearsFan731

It is true, my SR has had access!

  • Anti M

If they are taken to the NEX, and are given a little free time as a reward, they might be able to pay to use one of those computers.

Only other scenario would be an officer computer, an SR in a leadership position who is in favor with the RDC.

It truly is not common, nor something to be counted on.

  • scrappyjax

I certainly don't expect it, I'd probably crap my pants if my Facebook notification went off and it was him! Lol

  • BearsFan731

@scrappyjax, I was totally taken off guard. It has been twice and it is was for clearance info (lasted about 10 mins) and the other was to thank me for some information. I wasn't on FB the last one so I was unable to reply back.

  • scrappyjax

Thanks bearsfan731! This guy was telling us his niece was posting status updates to facebook all throughout boot camp.

Hello all! I am a new member of this group. My son left for RTC on 2/11 and my other son is in DEP, due to leave in July(he's a senior). Got the box yesterday. Waiting for our first phone call. Can't wait! He's on my mind every day. Whenever I get frustrated at work,(I work in retail) I think of what he might be facing and decide my work is a piece of cake!

  • Marixi

Anyone ever stayed at the Navy Inn? What are the benefits of the lodge over the Inn or vice versa? Is the Inn even an option for family of SRs?

  • lemonelephant

Marixi, Yes, the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites is an option for the families of graduating Sailors. Your recruit is your sponsor. See the info in Saving Money PIR Weekend.

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

scrappyjax - love the "crap my pants" remark...I was dying!

  • CatMom509

    Hi Friends!

"My soul finds rest in God alone,

          my salvation comes from Him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation.

He is my fortress, I will never be shaken."

  • navyMom1

The girl that snuck her phone into the barracks was discharged and fined $1,200.

  • K1's Mom

What a moron!!!! Sorry but sneaking is lying and I wouldn't want them representing our country. Not to mention if they can't follow the rules how can you trust them in the field!!! Sorry, that just struck a nerve....IDIOT!!!
  • lemonelephant

Thanks for sharing. The Navy does not tolerate not following orders.

  • C'sProudMomma

Speaking of rule following...I'm wondering if my son would be allowed a piece of chewing gum sent in a letter???

  • lemonelephant

Good point, K1's Mom, on lying. That recruit was not showing honor, part of the Sailor's Creed: "I proudly serve my country's Navy combat team with Honor, Courage, and Commitment."

  • K1's Mom

I was under the impression no gum or candy allowed. I am not a 100% sure though. I think if they are allowed, they could get it at the NEX.
  • lemonelephant

    C'sProdMomma, NO, don't send gum.

  • K1's Mom

    EXACTLY lemonelephant!!!!!!
  • lemonelephant

You might suggest to those on fB that they not send gum.

  • CatMom509

    Blessed Sunday!

"Blessed are the pure in heart,

          for they will see God."

                                    Matthew 5:8

  • CatMom509

    C'sProudMomma,

I think some of the newer recruiters say things without checking, but stuff like extra little goodies in the mail is important enough to give the right advisement~~  I'm glad you went with your momma's intuition and checked here too.  Were you able to pass on the correct info to your FB group?

At PIR weekend in the hotel and afterward, you can shower your new Sailors with goodies!!  :)
