Babybird98,. chevrons indicate that he is a Petty Officer. Since the rate of Petty Officer cannot be earned by a recruit at BC, that would indicate that he has a Recruit Petty Officer position and has some extra responsibilities. You will not see the collar device for that (until he actually becomes a Petty Officer later on while in the fleet) since it must be returned before he has PIR. See Recruit Petty Officer Positions.

Math teacher and tutorlady, "Hell Week" (not all RDC's permit the use of that term) is week 4 of  training and is called that because of the number of tests that week that include the second PFA, live fire where the recruit may earn Sharp Shooter or Expert Ribbons and several inspections among other things. Battle Stations-21 (BST) is the final test before becoming a Sailor and occurs at the end of week 6 of training.

  • lemonelephant

Even though recruits are at the RTC at least 7 weeks, there are 6 weeks of actual training for all recruits after a minimum of 4 P-days. Some recruits may have extra P-days and/or have extra days between Battle Stations-21 (BST) and PIR depending on when the division formed.

@lemonelephant no words can tell you how much us newbee parents appreciate ALL you do. You are our guardian angel as we send our babies off to unknown territory. Thank you so very much for all of your knowledge and true friendship. God Bless you always!

  • Melanie

First time mom. Received my Daughter's info ship 02 Div 941 Please don't laugh but once I leave this site have a hard time getting back here anymore can help me set this up alittle easier. Sorry for the trouble
  • Anti M

Melanie, are you using a mobile device such as a phone or tablet?  I find this site so hard to use on those I only use my laptop.  If you are, try "desktop view" and then you can find "My Groups" and bit easier, and then this group.  I hope that helps a little.

  • SailorsLIMom

I agree, the mobile version of the site is hard to navigate.  You can add comments by clicking the icon next to the number at the bottom right, though.

    Thank you for helping me

For the sailors who have A school at the Great Lakes what items can we bring for them at PIR?
  • jennifer

My son has a bag packed with his computer and charger...I'm to bring his phone. He was told that was okay.
  • Lea (SHIP 11 DIV 242)

I went onto the RTC Great Lakes fb site. There is a section for families, and a list of common questions/answers. Its a great resource.
Also, www.bootcamp.navy.mil has a question/answer section. It also has a list of do's & Don'ts regarding the sailor and graduation day/liberty.
  • Mammagoose

My son leaves for RTC August 1 but had his first meeting with the people that determine security today. How likely is it that it will be complete by the time he leaves and what happens if the final security clearance isn't determined by the time he leaves?
  • lemonelephant

Mammagoose, most of the time a future Sailor will be able to ship if the initial security clearance has gone through. It is common for additional security checks to be done while at the RTC (and NF, your future Sailor's contracted field, is one that it happens for), so expect him to ship as scheduled. If something comes up in the security check while at BC, then he would be offered a contract for a rating or one of the PACT programs that does not require the higher level of security clearance or he could choose to be separated.

Thanks Lea for the info. You have been very helpful. On that link it says do not bring cell phones. I had read before to bring phones, chargers, laptops and comfy clothing to wear inside the hotel room. I know they must have uniform on outside the hotel room. Anyone know for sure?
  • jennifer

I don't know for sure. I think I will bring it and if he can't take it I will bring it home. Maybe it depends where and what they are doing. Plus we may get future insight from letters and phone calls.
  • jennifer

Sorry...I was referring to A school.
  • ibeitz71

How long before form letter comes my son arrived last Thursday?

  • Anti M

jennifer, if they have A school at Great Lakes, then they can take back whatever electronics and clothes to their new barracks, after they have checked in.  Everyone who is flying out to A school cannot take anything back to RTC with them, but you can meet them at the airport to hand their phones, etc, over.

A word on security clearances: they really never finish them completely before they ship.  They do enough to get them to RTC, then complete the clearances in stages.  I needed a Top Secret for C school, and it didn't come through until I was done with A school. That was over 30 years ago, one of the things which does not really change.  These just take time. Honestly, I think the internet and our new larger electronic footprints actually have slowed things down!

    How is everyone holding up?
I learned that I won't be attending graduation, makes me sad but I am hoping I can view it on live feed.
My son is doing really well. He says many of them are doing well.
He said Letters/calls for his division are affected by the Commanding Officer so Keep your smiles on everyone.
Prayers for all of our kids.
  • Samray5

JRMOM  when does your SR graduate and what div???? Maybe someone can help

  • OtterBaby

JRMom - We're friends. Isn't your SR in either my son's DIV 220 or sister DIV 219? Maybe I can help!!

  • jennifer

I'm sitting in a nursing home auditing...and across the street is a church. As I'm sitting here working, the bells just played America the Beautiful. It is giving me chills. Praying the our SRs are thriving. They are fore front in my mind. Omgsh now just played my country Tis of thee. What a gift while I'm working. Made me think of all of you.
  • soccermom19

So, here I sit just waiting until 3pm when I take my son in to leave for BC.  It's a wonderful thing, so I why am I so teary?  He keeps getting angry because I keep trying to hug him as he walks by.  He had left after high school to live on his own a few years and then since learning he was going in moved back temporarily for a month.  I was just loving it having him back here and he does not get that.

  • Esti'sMom

jennifer, that's really cool. Nice to have things remind us of our kids! :)
I wish I knew how my daughter's been doing with her tests... maybe in the next letter or call... whenever that may be lol :)
  • Esti'sMom

soccermom19, enjoy this time!! He may not understand right now, but in a few days he just might. Hang in there mom!! We're all here for you. And get lots of hugs :)
  • TAT'sMom

JRMom, when is your PIR? My SR is 8/4. I will be there if this is your date, I can Skype and we can take your guy to dinner and site seeing.
  • TAT'sMom

Soccermom19, yes get lots of hugs no matter his attitude, he will miss it and such a loving Mom while at BC. Be strong and kiss him on the cheek too.
  • soccermom19

Can someone tell me about mail?  How does it work?  How will I know what the address to write is.  Believe me, if I have to rely on my son for those details, it probably will not happen.  And then once I get the address, do I need to send him a self addressed, stamped envelope or do they have what they need to mail?

  • TAT'sMom

Soccermom19, you will get the box with his belongings in about 3 days once he arrives then in about 10 days you will get a form letter with address, graduation date etc. mine took a while and I actually got a letter from my son before the form letter. That wait is the hardest. So write letters or cards so they are ready for mail when you get that.
  • Esti'sMom

soccermom19, you will receive a Form Letter about 10+ days (can be up to 2 weeks or so) after he's arrived. That will the address (with his Ship and Division) on it. Also, they have what they need to mail letter. :)
  • OtterBaby

Soccermom19, My heart goes out to you right now. I went through the same with my SR. 1 year of college - 5 hours away - home for 6 months - moved to the local "big city" and rented a house with buddies - moved home for 2 1/2 weeks and then off to BC. I am a big, big hugger of my son, too, and he reacts the same way. "Stop, Mom." lol. Never mind ... keep hugging. (BTW, my recent SR's call after 6 weeks - "no physical contact - even high 5's - since arriving") ... seems my SR has realized that hugs are a good, important thing!!!

  • CathyDB

Got the box!!! So excited. I was really surprised to get it so soon. He only arrived at BC on Thursday night. Now the long wait for the letter!
  • Esti'sMom

CathyDB, glad you got the box!! It's bittersweet. It took about the same time until I got mine, and I received the form letter about 3 days later. So hopefully it doesn't take too long :)
  • Path to greater things

Will the box have the mailing address for us? So we can start our letters to them?
  • Esti'sMom

No, unfortunately, the box will not have their mailing address. They haven't been assigned a ship, when they send it. The form letter will though. But definitely start writing, and save them to send all at once or in batches.
  • soccermom19

OtterBaby - yes, exactly!! He went away to college - 1 year.  Then went off with his buddies in an apartment.

But just dropped him off and hugged him before he got in the car and in the parking lot of the recruiting office.  He's in the Navy's hands now.

  • OtterBaby

soccermom19, I'm really proud of you for going for the parking lot hug!!! Trust me - (hah: now that I'm a seasoned Boot Camp Mom of a whole 6 weeks ...lol) - your son will remember those last hugs when times are challenging and falls into his bed ("rack") at the end of a long, long day.

  • OtterBaby

Black belt mom - You're in my thoughts. I've learned, also, that college isn't for everyone. My son just really, really didn't want to be there. He [barely] completed 1 year. The Navy, though, does promote education beyond what they learn at A School. Lots of options for them.

  • 3B'smom

OtterBaby - I know the feeling. My son went away to school for a year. He came home unhappy and not motivated to return. He spent the last year at home. Left yesterday for the hotel and is on the way to boot camp as we speak. I managed to only get a little teary before he left. I finally gave in to the tears last night after talking to him at the hotel.
  • blackbirdmom

A word about hugs: our sailor is not big on public displays of affection. We each got a short hug right before he left to go to the airport at MEPS. He didn't even really look back. Right after PIR, he gave us all a brief hug, but they aren't allowed large displays of affection that weekend. But we all noticed the change when it came time to say goodbye at the end of PIR weekend. Those were some powerful hugs. And even when we went to see him a couple of weeks ago in GL (where he is at for A school) those hello and goodbye hugs are super strong. Those hugs are a lot different after BC and even going into A school. Even with more communication, there is nothing like having your family/friends right there with you. Hang in there moms and loved ones.

  • Marchella

I'm taking my son to the hotel tonight and he's off tomorrow- he's a big hugger such a genuine young man- I'm so close to him trying to be strong and let him go but I can't stop crying
  • jennifer

Marchella, I am thinking of you. It is hard. Praynfor strength. You will get it. Stay strong for him. He will need that strength. Sending you hugs.
  • Mar3n1

Marchella I cried days before to I still break out in an occasional tear and my son graduates in a little less then 2 weeks. It doesn't get easier you just become stronger. The hardest for me was my son was always the one who everyday he would say love you mom. Since he left I've only got to hear it 3 times so far. Each one more precious then the last. You can do this and on those days it feels to much we are here to help. I know this site got me through some OMG I can't days.
  • OtterBaby

3B'sMom, You're in my thoughts today as your son heads to Boot Camp. Just remember that you've provided him the foundation he needs to take this step. Mom is the hardest job - especially since we're teaching them all of their young lives so we can push them out of the nest. Stay strong 3B'sMom.
  • OtterBaby

Marchella, the spontaneous crying must be "normal" since I did the same thing before my SR left and for the first couple of weeks of Boot Camp. It's impossible for you to believe this today, but it *does* get less painful as you hit the milestones: the first "I'm here" call, arrival of "the box," arrival of the form letter with his address (!! WRITE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN!), the first real call when you get to talk, .... and before you know it you're making plans for graduation. Hang in there!
