brynne21 that was me, thank you for your information. My brain is just so overloaded these days. Thank you again for answering my question about when I would be able to give my son his phone. Another question, I am sorry, for being a pest, but are we allowed to give them personal clothing to take back, I heard they can have their boxers back or lounging pants, etc. to sleep in

  • tutorlady

@CathyDB. You just answered a question of mine. I believe our sailor wants to go to Chicago on Saturday. I was wondering if the schedule is accurate toreal time. He wants to go to Navy Pier. From what I can tell, the best way is to take the Metra to OTC and then take the Blue Line. More concerned about timing for the return trip.
  • brynne21

@butterball, I get it. I went into a lot of this blind. I suggest sitting at the top for graduation. I suggest capris and a seat cushion! You can send him some lounge clothes but he won't be able to wear anything but issued clothes until he "phases up." I don't know about the sleep clothes. I sent him white boxer briefs and some lounge shorts and tshirt to begin with. When he phased up, I sent more civvie clothes. I don't know if I helped or made it more confusing. My son is on the Missouri and is not allowed snacks from outside.
  • brynne21

We went to Navy Pier on saturday and had a great time. Also, he sat in chocolate in his white dress uniform. I almost died! We went back to the hotel and he laid down while I scrubbed his pants and hung them dry (and took a hair dryer to them). Good as new. They were very easy to clean.
  • tutorlady

@brynne21. I am bringing Shout wiped, Dawn dish soap and Tide pens for emergencies. But, I have heard that the Tide pend tend to yellow the white uniforms.
  • tutorlady

@brynne21. What time did you leave Navy Pier to guarantee your sailor was back at GL in time?
  • CathyDB

Www.metrarail.com can give you times, stops, and prices. The Great Lakes station has a ticket person inside. Your sailor gets a discount.
  • brynne21

@tutorlady, I don't recommend the tide pens for the white uniforms. I soaked the affected area in the sink for about 10 min and gently washed it out with regular ole soap and a washcloth. It came right out. We drove to Navy Pier and everywhere in Chicago. We had him back in PLENTY of time for curfew. They muster at 9:30 and we would have him back about 6 so he could rest and visit with friends if he chose to. We did pick him up early Saturday morning-about 8. So we had him all day. We started at Navy Pier and the took the bus tour around Chicago. The hop-on hop-off bus that allows you to hit the hot spots. We did the skydexk at Willis Tower but only do that early (no later than 10am)or the line is COMPLETELY out of control. Let me think, we ate Chicago hotdogs and Chicago pizza. We had a great time. I cannot comment about the rails as we did not use them at all.
  • brynne21

@tutorlady, it took us about 60 or so minutes to get from Navy Pier back to GL driving on a Saturday afternoon. It can take about an hour and a half. It really depends on how heavy traffic is.

Thanks to everyone who helped with what to do while on liberty after graduation!  Wonderful ideas....and cautionary words.  I appreciate it all!  I will put some thoughts together and let him decide.  He may change his mind after we eat lunch!

  • Soccer Mom

During the I'm a Sailor phone call, my son asked if his grandparents could come.  I mentioned that only four could be on the list and he stressed about the chapel.  I can't find anywhere much information about the chapel, except that it may not be available...but he seemed confident it was.

  • Path to greater things

I read effect july 2017 chapel will not be available. Lemon elephant. Can you send soccor mom that lin you sent me about pir weekend. Way down toward bottom it mentions the chapel.
  • JoeysMom98

My son leaves today for BC.  I am worrying about what he needs to have with him.  He has a small thin black wallet, will he be able to keep this with him or will he send it home?  Will he need phone cards?  I understand that he can keep a small bible and possibly a small address book (which I am having a lot of trouble finding).  I was thinking that maybe we could write some addresses on a small piece of paper to keep in his wallet if he is able to keep it.  Any advice is welcome.

  • Phoenixmom

My son left with just his wallet and a small phone book Bank Information. whatever can fit in a wallet is what he took. His Recruiter had told him not to take anything but what fitted in a wallet.

  • 3B'smom

I wrote down some numbers on a small slip of paper for my SR's wallet (they do keep the wallet). When he called home last weekend he said that they have a small notebook to write address and phone info. We didn't send him with a phone card. His recruitor didn't think he needed one. He bought one at the NEX.
  • Anti M

I have seen mini address books on Amazon.  Also, if the pocket bible has blank note taking pages, you can write numbers and addresses there.  To test the size, put it in a standard tube sock!  That's what they do at RTC.

  • Anti M

If you search for mini address books, you can find one which is slim and fits inside a wallet.

  • Tffytat

My son left with just his thin black wallet, a calling card and a small handheld composition book I'd found in the Dollar Tree. It came 3 in a pack. We went that route because I also had trouble finding a small address book. I got his box yesterday and it wasn't in there so I assume that he was able to keep it. Also, I started not to purchase a calling card prior to him leaving, however, the night before he left at the hotel check in- one of the Petty Officers mentioned he would need one. I ran out and got a $20 card from a nearby gas station.

  • Phoenixmom

I found my son a real nice mini address book at Wal-Mart or you can get them at Walgreens or CVS.

  • Gundo Girl

I know this question and been asked and answered but, can our SR's only make calls on specific days?
  • ellen0502

If you have extra guests, I would highly recommend they stay at the hotel and watch the live stream from there.

Extra guests may or may not be able to view the ceremony on base. If they can not view the ceremony on base they will be asked to leave base and return to the hotel.

Many of the hotels have the ceremony live streamed at the hotel. Some in their lobby, and others in adjoining rooms. Check with your hotel (I know the Navy Lodge streams it).

  • raising3247

They are allowed to keep a Bible with them in boot camp. We wrote addresses and phone numbers in there. My son doesn't know anyone's phone number by heart thanks to speed dial on his cell phone so I made sure to write down my cell phone number in there. Also his recruiter recommended a phone card unless you want them to call you collect.
  • ellen0502

Gundo Girl, Calls can come on any day of the week, but some will find the day of the week for their recruit is constant.

Look forward to a call at anytime, but never expect one. Call privileges can be given, and taken away at the drop of a hat.

  • Gundo Girl

Thank you, ellen0502! My son left June 27th and I haven't received a phone call yet! It's killing me! He's in Division 260. Has anyone else from that division received a call?
  • tutorlady

@JoeysMom98 - Be sure to put bandaids in the wallet if you still have time.   I did for my sailor and it saved a trip to medical.

  • JoeysMom98

@Gundo girl - thanks! I do still have a little time. How many would you say I should send? :)
  • TessaNator⚓️

FYI-Please be careful of ordering 'magnetic' address book.  The magnet will 'demagnetize your credit/debit cards.

  • jennifer

Joeysmom98- the addresses on paper should be fine. They can take a 20 dollar phone card. I found ours at dollar General. I know CVS has them...I couldn't find it at Kinneys. Not sure what stores are around you. Also if she has an account at yr bank.

I sent a 1199..or 1198 form. Does your son have the recruit magazine? There is a list in there. Also needs SS card. Goodluck!

Thought we could all use some humor!

  • jennifer

Good point about the magnet. I found a tiny accordion religious address book....it fit so well in his wallet. No magnet. Size of a prayer card. I listed phone numbers too. He didn't want a bible so I got that instead. Probs my only made me feel good. Lol. I like the cartoons posted.
  • Proudmama82

LOL!! Those are so funny and true!

    Great Humor! Love it!

I went on Pinterest, copied and pasted a bunch.  Sending one in each letter/card to help with morale.   Send some to your kiddos, a little giggle or chuckle always helps so much when you are feeling overwhelmed!

Trying to cheer myself up, miss my Man cub!  The puppy in the last posting is them first week of RTC, the wolf is when they graduate!

  • Phoenixmom

I like! and I know what you mean I love the puppy one! I just wish I knew what he was doing and what he's thinking or going thru his mind, but then he is probably so tired he aint thinking. LOL!

  • BoyMom4

@TessaNator ... I've been sending my son the same types of letters!! My dude is a huge fan of memes & random funny-ness, so as much as I want to write him asking a billion questions, lol, I've refrained & decided to send things I know he will enjoy. ;)
  • jennifer

Great ideas. I appreciate the ideas too. I've only received one letter which it fine. I got an email too so I feel lucky. But his friend at West Point just mailed me the sweetest letter. Made my day. Made me so emotional. He is training and said he was thinking of my son!! So sweet.
  • soccermom19

My son just left MEPS this morning for boot camp. I am feeling very emotional today. I am so excited for his adventure, but anxious and nervous at the same time. I am not looking forward to not talking to him whenever I want to either. Missing him so much already.
I have a question (a bit ahead of myself here, but someone asked me) will my son wear Navy dress blues or whites for graduation in September?
  • raising3247

JoeysMom98 - I believe they make the switch to dress blues after Labor Day but I'm not completely sure.
  • TessaNator⚓️

    Mommy misses him too
