Why would the navy check your medical records? I get the navy checking the sailors records but not outside that.
  • Mar3n1

I read your post Soccer Mom and teared up. On my computer background I have a picture of my Son the day he left for boot camp from the MEPS center he is smiling a little lost smile and waving at me. Beside it is the photo I took of him minutes after I got to hug him at graduation. I see my little boy and my young man side by side every day and I just smile with pride and a tear. He was so determined is so determined but was a little afraid and it all shows in those two photos.
  • Nicole

    I mailed my son 10
  • JoeysMom98

I received my son's box today. Tomorrow is one week without him. I am anxious to get an address and to hear his voice! I really can't wait to find out his projected graduation date! I am curious to know if anyone has a son or daughter who might be with him.

Why would the navy check your medical records? I understand checking the sailors but not anyone else.

I got a response back concerning the hotels. The short version is that officially there are no hotels that are off limits. Unofficially one or more RDC may advise the new Sailors to stay away from certain hotels due to their reputation for drugs and/or prostitution. Check the reviews of any hotel you are considering and if it seems questionable, then look for another place. There is one hotel that new Sailors were advised against a few times last year that was also mentioned by a Sailor earlier this month.

yelomoon, the Navy cannot check your medical records without your consent. That is part of HIPAA. How would they even know where to check for your records? What made you believe that you records were being checked?

  • Butterball

CONGRATULATIONS yelomoon on the "I'm here" call. I don't understand your medical records being checked. Maybe they do that normally. Ask his recruiter or one of the admins here.

  • AnchorsAweigh!

@ jacquiesboys, hello, my son is in the same ship and division as yours. Nice to meet you.
  • polomom

yelomoon, maybe they were asking your SR about family medical history ... but nobody can legally access your medical records without your signed consent.

  • Soccer Mom

Mar3n1:  I know that you are so proud of your son.  I can hear it as I read your comment.

Anchorsaweigh:  We didn't stay in the same town.  I travel for soccer ALOT and can't stand spending a lot of money on a hotel, but I really like clean rooms.  We stayed in Sprinhill Suites in Lincolnshire.  It is 12 miles away and took us about 18 minutes to drive and it was an easy 12 miles.  I love GPS.  The room was only $53 dollars a night as I selected the express deals for a 3 star or higher hotel.

When we were waiting for my son on Saturday, I was hanging out in the NEX (next to the parking lot) and had the pleasure of seeing the soldiers come in for thier first phone call during week 3.  Some got in trouble and lost minutes on the phone.  It was hard seeing them come out afterwards with many having tears in their eyes at getting to hear their families voices.  When they were marching in, the lead person kept telling them "If you need a phone card get it now on the right".  They can use the $150 dollar card that they are given to purchase a phone card, but it does take part of their phone time.  FYI

  • Anti M

Terrific story, Soccermom!  Thanks for sharing.  However, LOL, there are no "soldiers" at Great Lakes.  There are recruits/SRs, and there are sailors.  It really is a thing with us that we're the most unique branch of service, and the rivalry is an old tradition.

  • Tffytat

    Jacquiesboys- Same here, Hello!

  • NickSydmom

Still nothing- no form letter, no real letter and no phone call. The recruiter gave me PIR date and his address last week. Should I call the recruiter again , about the form letter?
  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

Hello Navy Moms!  My son shipped out for Boot Camp on the 20th.  I got a call 2 days ago from his recruiter saying he was out of processing and he has his address.  I still have yet to get "the Box".  Is it sent via USPS or FedEx?  I've heard both.  I work all day and I don't want to miss it.  I've written my Recruit everyday since he ahs left.  An idea for other Moms- I got a bunch of long sticky notes, not the square ones, and they're different colors.  Everyday I just write a short note of what has gone on that day, as well as friends writing short encouraging notes.  Then I've stuck them to just plain white pieces of paper. (4 stickies fit on one page.)  I also traced our dog's paw and wrote a note from him too.  That way, the second I find out his address, I can mail it out and he hasn't missed anything!

  • raising3247

Proud - My son's box came via FedEx and I had to sign for it.

  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

Dang it!  I hope I don't miss it!

  • jennifer

Proud...of you miss it...there is a form you can sign and they will leave it. Or they will leave a notice and a place where you can go get it. It will be your choice. I left the paper on the door and the next day they came back and left the box. My box still sits in the same spot. I have a wall up I guess. Once I see him...I will take care of the box I guess. Everyone reacts differently to it. I'm on day 43.
  • Tanya

Can I send a care package with items in it other than food. I am going to send a phone card and pictures if pictures are ok. I would like to send something else even if it's a crossword puzzle book or something.
  • jennifer

Tanya...you can't send anything. Just the phone card. Nothing that calls attention to them. I only allowed white paper and envelopes and black ink. If I wanted to send a picture...I printed it on the printer and wrote around it...like a letter. There are instructions on this site. They just entered another world and contact and rules are hard to get adjusted to. But after boot camp rules will change.
  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

Jennifer-  Oh geez!  I'm only on day 7!  It's so weird not having him home. Talk about empty nest syndrome!  I have no idea what to do with myself when I'm home, I'm not used to having free time.  I'd have his kitchen messes to clean up or have to cook something, now I don't.  Bigger change for him, I know, but this is quite the adjustment.  It is such a great opportunity for them though, I'm very happy he made this decision!

  • jennifer

Proud...I know...how you feel. I started picking weeds..lol..my yard looks great. I crank his music. Drive his truck. My one kid left tells me I'm crazy. I did this 8 years ago...so it is slightly easier in terms of what to expect. You will do it. These mom's are great too.
  • librarianmom

No photos?  My son just sent me a letter saying he could have a small photo and could I send one of his dog.  I will need to look into it more.

  • jennifer

I have read many things...go by what your son tells you. I know I got scolded bc my son is on the email pilot and I sent a pic of his grandpa...with pretend pig tails ...we thought it was hilarious. My response was ...this is a military site email....can't send pics like that. So I am overly cautious.
  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

Jennifer- I just read your post about instructions for sending stuff to Boot Camp.  Where are these?

  • jennifer

Much of what I read was just grazing through this site. Also the recruit magazine that your SR got to study from prior to going. It said what they had to take and a general overview. Also I have a friend who did this 3 or 4 years ago. His advice...was to Wes -Do not get noticed. Do everything they tell you and lie low. That includes letters and stickers etc. Keep it basic. I know we don't want to cause them extra pushups etc. I just kept reading blogs and there is a link somewhere about letter writing. I know Lemonelephant has sent it out before.
  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

Nevermind, I found it.  I'm worried because these last 6 days, I have written to him on colored post-its.  They're the longer rectangular ones. Just notes as I go throughout my day, but colored nonetheless.  Will this be ok?

  • jennifer

Probably fine. I'm just a cautious person. They are in survival mode. Lots of learning. I chose only white ....don't panic
  • jennifer

Proud - you put them inside envelopes...it will be fine. I also read that white paper and black ink...shows up at night better if they are trying to sneak a peek at the letters!
  • Kristin

is it best to buy a challenge coin online or wait until PIR?

  • tutorlady

@ Kristin - speaking from my experience at PIR last week, buy it on-line if you can.  It has to be picked up at the NEX at the same place where they pick up their pictures - if they didn't have them sent home.  And. The. Line. Is. CRAZY. Long!!!!

  • raising3247

My son's girlfriend has sent him pictures and he hasn't had any issues.  I read that you can send anything that will fit in a flat envelope.  I guess it depends on their RDC and how hard nosed they want to be about things.  We also slipped some pictures into my sons Bible that he took with him.

  • TessaNator⚓️

I bought challenge coins online, don't wanna stand in line all day when I could b relaxing w/my kiddo
  • Mar3n1

I sent pictures printed out on paper so that he wouldn't be called to share in front of everyone. I was told that was the safest bet. And not to send anything he wouldn't be comfortable and or proud to show his commanders.
  • SCSunshine777

Mine came UPS. My phone messed up and I had to do insurance claim and left the note on the door where to leave the box and put "to" Fedex/UPS. Funny thing is I was expecting my phone box instead note was gone and it was "the box". So, I was thankful that coincidentally I left note on door and they left her box for me. My phone came later that night when I was home. I thought, "Oh no. Now I didn't have a note all day for my phonr." It worked out though. So, just leave a note with your signature and number on the door.
  • Lesliepartyof6

Could someone please point me in the direction to find out more about the challenge coin? I saw it somewhere...but I have learned so much through here i just can't remember where to go or where I saw something about it.
  • librarianmom

I am going to go ahead and send a small photo of his dog as requested.
  • Nicole

    I did too!
  • Nicole

My son begged me in his letter to get the dog pic sent
  • tutorlady

Mine just graduated from PIR.  To err on the safe side, I always scanned or uploaded pics and then copied and pasted them onto a document (and wrote a short note as well).  I always wrote with the thought that anything "might" be read before he received it.  Also, sending pics in document form made the letters less bulky for him to have to store.

  • jennifer

Tutorlady...I'm with you. But from reading all that I have inn the past 2 months..everyone has a slightly different experience and rules. I figured for 9 Fridays he can deal and then I can send whatever he wants in A school. I did the same thing you did. Someone had suggested that. I just got a 2nd letter. So happy!!! My SR doesn't write like the others...states too busy w his job. Not much free time.
  • Tanya

Hi, When my son leaves the RTC and goes to school in California can I give him his stuff at the airport?  I was going to pack a suite case with some clothing, shoes, socks ect for him to take and have instead of sending it when he gets there.  If someone has the answer otherwise I was gong to call his recruiter.  I want to make sure he has what he needs but do not want to get him in trouble.  Our one family friend who was in the Air Force told him to keep his head down and don't draw attention to himself.  I would feel horrible if he was in trouble because of me and my need to mother him.

  • Anti M

Tanya, you can take a suitcase to the airport, but be aware he is already carrying his full uniform issue, and will be loaded down with that.  He cannot wear his civilian clothes for a minimum of two weeks anyway.  He won't get in trouble, but it may be a hassle for him.  He probably will want new underwear for sure!  They all do.  I would ask your son what he prefers.

  • Proud Parent of 3 Sailors

The challenge coins at PIR will be your SR's division and their divisions flag coin. Those you can only get at the base PIR. I had a son graduate last year and one is graduating a week from tomorrow, so excited. Waiting for my I'm a Sailor" call, should be soon.
  • Proud Parent of 3 Sailors

I am bringing a small back pack with a Few outfits, underwear, flip flops, could also include laptop if they have one, tablet or other small handheld system. My son prepackaged this before he left. He can throw it on his back and carry it on the plane. My 1st son could not wait to get civilian clothes so he had me send him a box, while waiting he went to the NEX and bought clothes. Otherwise they have to wear their digital everywhere.
  • AnchorsAweigh!

@Soccermom,thank you again for all the great information, I really appreciate it. Being from England, I am or we are huge football/soccer fans. Chelsea is our team! Thanks again.
  • 3B'smom

@AnchorsAweigh! My husband and son (not the SR) are Westham fans.
  • AnchorsAweigh!

@3b'smom, I still love singing "I'm forever blowing bubbles!' Much to the disgust of the rest of the one less household.. haha
