Nicknukemom- Glad your son was upbeat! I'm hoping my next letters sound that way!
He did say his military ID pic looked like he just been "delivered" because he was bald and had been up for 36 hours at that point...lol That was the extent of his jokes. He also said his butt was sore from his peanut butter shot.
Anti M - thanks for the encouragement!
  • Lesliepartyof6

Thanks tutorlady! Next week should be better. Hooyah!
  • AnchorsAweigh!

@Soccermom, Man bloody United?!?! Enough said! Haga My husband and son rolled their eyes! Haha so your son plays like 'Shrek' (Rooney) good for him. Love the game, keeps you very fit. But all I want in this world is to hear my sons voice, nothing more nothing less. A letter would b great but to hear his voice would lift my heart. Went out this morning after work and bought another phone card (that I will activate for him to save him time) and stationary just incase..
  • jennifer

AnchorsAweigh....I sent smaller stamped envelopes in a bigger white one...2 at a time. I said give them away if you don't want to write. I sent 2 small lined pieces of paper with each. The 2 letters I revived were Naval line paper. So I assume he has to use that stationary. Since I have only receive 2 letters I hope he gave the envelopes to other SRs to use.
  • jacquiesboys

O.K. so I am catching up this morning. Couple questions.......what week did your son's/daughter's have their wisdom teeth out, and why? Also, I sent out stamps and calling cards, but did I need to also send stationary and envelopes? I have this "mother guilt" I call it, don't want my son to be the only one standing there when everyone else gets mail from home......and they were sent envelopes and stationary. I probably sound nuts, but I have not received a call or a letter yet.......getting anxious as to why not?

  • AnchorsAweigh!

@Jennifer, thank you for your comment. I won't send the stationary. I sent stamps with my first letter, so.... hopefully will have time to write just a few lines. I signed up for the informed delivery from USPS but think I get more disappointed when I don't see a letter on my computer then looking in the bloody mailbox!! Haha So going to let mister postman surprise me for a while.. I know sound like a raving looney.. haha must be too much coffee!
  • AnchorsAweigh!

@jennifer, forgot to say, soo glad you received letters, it truly is the small things that make us smile or in this case keep our hearts beating the right beat!
  • Lesliepartyof6

Jacquiesboys - I believe my son had his taken out yesterday...he mentioned it would happen in a letter. I had to figure out what days he was on. So 2-5 (week 2 day5) that would have been yesterday. Check out this day per day bootcamo forum. Its pretty neat! My son arrived on July 11th at RTC. I just received my first letter on July 27th if this helps.

AnchorsAweigh...you make me look normal! I have 2 more Fridays...I can't wait. My husband has been running since our guy left. I've been doing this protein nonsense. So once over we each are getting a treat. I want a vodka sunrise. Not sure what the hubby will want. I know someone out there will identify with me. Lol...have a great weekend. Keep your phones close. You never know. My first call was at 10:45 pm. And the second one..to his grandparents was at 8:30 am. Both were brief. you just never know....
  • AnchorsAweigh!

@jacquiesboys, I read here somewhere to send stationary and because I too haven't received a letter was thinking, oh no my kid doesn't have anything to write on. But Jennifer said she sent stAtionary but received letters written onNaval lined paper.. I think my son is thinking let's see how long mums hair takes to go grey!!!
  • Sailor mom soon

@jacquiesboys - RTC provides them with $150 NEX card that they use to purchase necessary items with. If course, it is taken out of their paychecks later. Mine used his to purchase some envelopes, stamps, and a small composition notebook for writing home. He since requested that I send pre-addressed envelopes (which I have). Most likely just to save him some time. They removed his wisdom teeth end of week 2. If the Navy feels they will give them trouble in the future, they will remove them. Hope this helps!
  • Lesliepartyof6

I also sent stamps and stationary and received letters on lined paper with RTC seal in the upper left hand corner, the envelope was different also.
  • AnchorsAweigh!

@Jennifer, I did feel normal until my kid left for boot, now I don't know? Ha Saw a friend yest that said u look great, what diet are you on? Me, oh it's called my kid is in Boot camp diet! I am pretty much sending him everything people have said to send even moleskin for blisters. I said that I would send a flying monkey if need be. The whole wisdom teeth thing is giving me the he be ge be's!! As mine were impacted and had to be taken out but that might just be instore for his little brother. Bless! I am with you on your treat, by that point (and my son has only been there for 2 weeks), I think anything alcoholic would suffice!! My phone is stuffed in/down/on my person at all times. You too have a lovely weekend and good luck with the protein thing.
  • Anti M

If their wisdom teeth are not an easy straight out pull and need oral surgery, they may wait until A school, when they are on hold, to remove them.  Some are just left in.

  • jacquiesboys

thanks for all the responses regarding stationary/stamps/wisdom teeth. Yesterday was week 2, day 5.....so he probably had his out then too! Oh boy, He kept telling me for months, "Mom, I should have my wisdom teeth out before boot camp". BTW, he left on July 13th, and is Ship 13, Div 281.

  • librarianmom

I think my son would not be an easy out. Probably at A school then...
  • raising3247

Jaquiesboys- I didn't send stationary to my son and I have gotten letters from him. They can buy it at the NEX. I did send stamps in my first letter to him so that he wouldn't have to buy them.
  • NickSydmom

I wasn't aware of the wisdom teeth removal policy until I heard about it here. I bet my son had his out yesterday. I hate that I can't baby him. I wish I had known I would have had them out before he went.
  • Miigwanikwe

My son told me when he wrote that he was able to keep the top part of his hair, so he's not completely bald
  • mygod5

So do they have to remove their wisdom teeth, my daughter just had her braces removed and the ortho was keeping an eye on them.  I got her letter yesterday and she mentioned she might have to get them removed but she's not ready for that pain. What is the policy for wisdom teeth how do I find out.

  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

Hello!  My son left on the 20th and I yet to receive "The Box".  I know he's out of processing because I got a call from his recruiter a few days ago.  Also, I saw on previous comments something about a Challenge Coin??  What is this?  Also, my son's recruiter said his PIR date should be September 15th.  Anyone else's recruit set for this date?

  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

BTW- we found out about the wisdom teeth while he was in DEP and I said let's just do it now so you can recover comfortably at home.  My son said he couldn't have any medical interventions as that may have set his ship date back.

  • 3B'smom

@AnchorsAweigh! My son left Jun27th and we didn't receive a letter until July 20. He had extra P time (12 days) so that delayed when he was able to mail something. We actually received a phone call before the letters. Hoping we will get another call this weekend or next.
  • SCSunshine777

My daughter's wisdom teeth were straight on her last xrays as opposed to my other daughter's being sideways. I hope for her they don't take them out for now being away from home. Feel bad for the other kids having theirs done. If it needs to be done I guess it is better now of they have someone that knows what they are doing than some random dentist. Feel bad that they have one they don't know doing it.
  • NickSydmom

I got my first phone call today. I loved hearing his voice. They didn't pull his wisdom teeth, they must be coming in straight. Before he left he kept joking about his dad having to take out the trash now. His job at basic is taking out the trash ha ha .
  • SCSunshine777

Lol, my husband said he hoped they have my daughter washing dishing AND taking out the trash @Nicknukemom
  • AnchorsAweigh!

@Nikmukemom and SCsunshine777, hahaha brilliant, love it! We are going to be soo surprised at what they will be doing when they hopefully come home, for Christmas.
  • AnchorsAweigh!

@3B'smom, thank you for telling me that. I hope your son calls you again soon. I know no news is good news..
  • tutorlady

@AnchorsAweigh, Nikenukemom and SCSunshine 777 - After PIR my sailor was very excited that I had brought a lint roller.  It was explained to me that lint rollers help to get the last bit of dust up off of the floor.  (This from the kids who never felt that their bedroom "needed" to be vacuumed).  BTW, I tried it - and it really works!!! Have a good day.  God bless your sailors; and, God bless America!

  • SCSunshine777

@tutorlady Yes my daughter always hunted my lint roller at home as she was in the Marine ROTC in h.s. I still haven't gotten a letter from her. She would be interested in knowing that her boyfriend that is supposed to leave for the Marines on Aug 21st...recruiter called him and may want him to leave earlier. There is a solar eclipse supposed to be then and the schools are even out here for that day. Don't know if them changing his day has anything to do with it. Had to tell her old sister today who was going to graduation that her name is not on the list, (but their youngest sister is.) She was disappointed. Asking that she doesn't even get to see her at all. I told her no she can't go to graduation and my husband is not on the list either. This is really stressful for people to have to choose between loved ones on a limited list and to not be included because of that is really upsetting to family members. My daughter has listed my ex husband (her dad) and not her stepdad who raised her.I told my oldest daughter that she should be able to see her if she has liberty, but my daughter's A school is at Great Lakes and I saw where processing someone said could take 5 hours. So, All of us would be inputting vacation days from work (not sure how much time we would have with her) due to we would be traveling from SC so we could see her graduate.
  • librarianmom

@SCSunshine...they live stream the graduation at hotels and everyone can see them after. My other two sons are doing that. We are taking my sons girlfriend to ceremony.
  • Rumace

My son went to Great Lakes on July 10th.  We got a first letter from him (not form letter) July 27th, postmarked the 24th.  He called Saturday, the 29th at 3:00 p.m. and talked to us for about 25 minutes.

  • Rumace

Almost forgot, he had one wisdom tooth removed.  Our family dentist had said he thought they were coming in straight.  My son said it wasn't bad.  He wasn't knocked out but was given some pain killers and rested for two days.

  • Soccer Mom

Good news for the THU conversation.  My son whose PIR was on July 21st had his medical signed on Thursday has his orders and is headed to Goose Creek on Tuesday.  He is ready to go!

  • Lesliepartyof6

Soccer mom : I live about 15 minutes from Goose creek:) congratulations!
  • SCSunshine777

    Congratulations Soccermom
  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

SCSunshine777 - If your daughter is going to A school in Great Lakes then even though it will take her awhile to process over to the other base on Friday she will get Saturday and Sunday liberty and you will be able to spend those days with her.  I hope this helps with planning your trip.  You are so right about it being hard to pick who gets to come to the graduation and who doesn't.  I have heard that most of the hotels around there show a live feed of the graduation so the family members who can't see it in person can watch it on there.  You can also watch it online.

  • SCSunshine777

@raising3247 doesn't she have to report back to the base at a certain time at night and also be picked up in the morning at the base somewhere? Can my husband go with me to pick her up or drop her off if he is not on the PIR list for liberty? I don't like driving in this city traffic. What do I do after she graduates? Do I leave base and wait on her to call to say she can be picked up? I saw somewhere they can't have their cell phone. I remember my stepson got his when we went there in 2012, but he was going to CA after graduation. I don't remember if it was just while he was with us he had his phone or if he took it with him after the ceremony, so he could call.
  • NickSydmom

I read somewhere, each division designs its own flag and a coin is made with that design. Is that true?
  • Marchella

I keep seeing people post about these challenge coins can you tell
    Me a little about them?
  • BoyMom4

@TessaNator .... PLEASE be careful when ordering from Ali Express.... they have been known for credit card fraud and they are not located within US. Just don't want you to fall victim to identify theft this close to PIR!!
  • Jocelynn

I got my first call too, yesterday. He's having it rough but he's hanging in there. Not only did they pull his wisdom teeth also, but he said his ankle swelled up when they first got there and then he had a sore throat relapse ( he had been sick before he even got there). My heart broke for him. But, he said things were starting to get better. I gave him the best words of encouragement I could and I think he's going to be O.K.    So emotional !!!

  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

TessaNator-  Thank you for the info about the coin!  I've also been watching videos on YouTube about boot camp.  Moms that haven't done so, should!  Very informative and you can kind of see what your recruit is doing!  Just type in "Navy Boot Camp" and there are 3 different videos starting from O'Hare all the way though graduation.

  • TessaNator⚓️

Boymom4: thx, I've placed over 500 orders from aliexpress, no fraud issues yet in 6 yrs (knock on wood).
ProudNavyMom: I have been watching videos on different sites, very helpful. You tube has some good ones too. But, navy websites the best! Helps me know what is making or boys into men in 8 weeks...and or girls into strong capable women.

I do get tears in my eyes every couple days....you spend 18-20 years nurturing, teaching, loving your kids....then when they join military....boom....gone!
So as a newly empty nester....I just picked out a puppy! Pics to follow
  • raising3247

SC - Yes she has to report back to the base at night.  Your husband can go with you to pick her up and drop her off.  She will call you and tell you when to pick her up at the gate. She can have her cell phone on Friday night when you take her back to the base.

  • Momof4gkids

So you picked your sailor up Saturday and Sunday. Were you able to spend anytime with them Friday once they were checked into A school or not? My daughter will be staying in Great Lakes also
