Kpoohbear My son is halfway through boot camp. He said the food there is quite good and there are lots of choices (unlike the Army) . He also said boot camp is humbling, he is typical 19 yo who thought a little too much of himself. The first few weeks seem to be the worst - hang in there!

phoenixmom You are such a blessing! Thank you for your faithfulness!

Son shipped out to basic on Wednesday and already got his box! Guess this time of year it goes fast!

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

Phoenixmom has posted the link for new requirement for the initial run standard for Navy Basic training that will begin at RTC January 1 of 2018.

I have made a BLOG post for them and will place it in FORUMS as well.

This is very important. A Recruit could be finished before they even start Boot if they don't pass their initial run standard.

The Recruiting offices are supposed to know this so if it is not being told to your future Recruit...print out the article and give it to them.

Got the form letter!  PIR is Jan. 26, 2018!  I now have an address to send his letters to him!  YAY!  Now, I guess the next step is to join the group for that date and fill out and return the RTC Visitor Request Letter (NSGLINST 5530 1) form.  I guess I send it back to my SR for his signature and he turns it in to the Public Affairs Officer?

  • Proud mamma

I got my form letter today. I'm new to this. Am I suppose to send back to my son with his mailing address or somewhere different and if so can I send it with his letters I've been writing or separate? Thanks

We left hotel at 6 and drove to PIR. Even after we were selected for a random check of our car, we still got there faster than the shuttles and parked right next to the building.
  • NNLori

Proud mamma- Yes, fill out the paper with all the information required for each guest. The ID number is the license number. For kids without drivers licenses you use their SS#. Then send it to you SR and he/she will hand it in. When my son graduated my daughter is 14 so I brought her ss card and a copy of her birth certificate just in case. They did look at her birth certificate so I was glad I brought it. Hope that helps some!

  • sambam32

Ok, thank you for explaining the miserable situation for those always asking about the shuttle in the freezing weather.

Can you share your expert lowdown on the cozy drive into the base? Ie...checking tickets, lines inside, security inside (lines), timing for driving vs shuttle.

  • sambam32

Well poop. The form does not say social number and I wish I would have known that before I turned it in because I did not put the minors social security number on there and I've already mailed it!

It's not my child so I sure hope they remember to bring the birth certificate

  • Proud mamma

    @NNLori Thank you very much.

  • NNLori

Sambam32 - no worries I didn’t either! I found this out after I sent mine in and I had no issues. Just bring the card and copy of birth certificate with you! You’ll be fine.
  • NNLori

    Proud mamma- your welcome!
  • Aurora

What time are the sailors required to be back on base that evening of graduation?

  • Mamabear

Sambam32 we drove to pir. We waited 15 minutes to get on base, then we were chosen for a vehicle check. We drove in, parked in the garage, parked and were inside before the shuttle people got there. We were in line by 6:15. It was very pleasant and we didn't have to walk far and freeze.
  • Proud mamma

Do I need to write recruit training command on his address. I'm curious because he did not write it on his envelope when I received the form letter he left that part out but I see it has recruit training command where it shows me his address. If anyone knows thanks.

  • NNLori

    No, the address includes.
    SR Name
    Ship/ Division
    Street address of their ship
    Great Lakes IL 6008-3510
  • Proud mamma

    Thank you. Much appreciated.

  • NNLori

You are very welcome! It’s a crazy time! So much to learn!
  • lmtsat

I know there is a discussion going on regarding driving to PIR versus taking a shuttle. Is there any difference if you take Sarge’s taxi service?
  • Anti M

@Aurora, yes, they have a curfew and must return each evening.  Be sure to give them plenty of time to check in and make it back to the barracks.  On time ls late!

  • Chipmunk

Kami - Our motel offered free shuttle and we were to leave on the 6:30 AM one - we signed up for it the night before, went to Sarge's meet n greet, got the info on his route to go to RTC. The next morning, we had our quick free hotel breakfast, and asked about the shuttle only to find out our names weren't on the list!! And the didn't have another one open until right before PIR- Needless to say, Plan B went into place and we drove to RTC. Not bad traffic that early, parked in the parking garage, down a flight of stairs and into the great hall where everyone was waiting for the doors to open. It turned out that due to delays with our son's orders, it was just as well we had to drive. I would opt for driving, especially in the cold, but if you take a free shuttle, make sure you see your names written down in their book!

  • Chipmunk

New Moms - I highly recommend you familiarize yourself with the RTC website. http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/  It was my go to for all information as I didn't know about N4M until I wanted more info on PIR - but it gives the address and graduation information. - Thanks NNLori for sharing!!

lmtsat - someone else might correct me, but I believe Sarge's taxi service drops off in the same place as the shuttles do. He might be able to get a little closer, I don't know.

Aurora - Different divisions or recruits might have different return times for various reasons. But as AntiM said, on time is late. And the cars will start backing up and you are not allowed to let a new sailor out and they walk back on RTC. Our son wanted to be back by 7:30 pm because he had to check out with the Quartermaster and he told him, that he would be back by 8 pm. It took about 20 min or so for him to walk from the parking area to his ship. He flew out the next morning very early. Others were still milling about in the NEX and such, so it just depends, but plan on between 7 - 7:30 pm as a general guideline, if you are trying to plan something ahead of time. - Which if you have a recruit that is flying out, orders can always change or may not be firmly set, so be as flexible with your weekend as possible.

Those of you with kids heading for boot camp in January will want to read this:

Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp

Beginning Jan. 1, Recruit Training Command (RTC), the Navy's only boot camp, will require recruits to pass an initial run standard before they may commence basic military training.

The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits.

If a recruit fails to meet the initial run standard, they will have one chance to retest within 48 hours. If they fail the retest, recruits will be discharged from the Navy with an entry level separation, which allows them to reapply at a later date with a waiver from Navy Recruiting Command

Linda you can transfer house calls to your cell phone, I would call your home phone co. and ask what you need to punch in and have calls transferred.

To forward calls from your home phone to your cell phone, for most phone providers the code is 72#, but it may be different for some providers. Dial 72# from your home phone. Then when you get the dial tone dial your 10-digit cell phone number (including area code). You should hear a couple of tones and your cell phone should ring. If it doesn't ring, repeat until it does and your calls will be forwarded to your cell phone. When you want to cancel the call forwarding, pick up your home phone and dial 73# (it may be different for some providers). Hang up and call your home phone from your cell phone to be sure that call forwarding has been cancelled; if not, dial 73# again. Check with your phone provider if you are unsure of the codes to use.

Ladies so you never miss a call I would forward calls from home phone to cell phone, call your phone provider to see what the code is for your area and phone. Would hate for you Ladies to ever miss a call, I know how important the calls and letters are.

  • Chipmunk

Linda, that does seem a little early for the 3 week call. There may have been some other information that was needed, or sometimes they get extra calls for good behavior, etc. My son's calls came on Saturday afternoon around 3 weeks and 5th or 6th week. Then his BS call.

for everyone on this site, if for some reason you cannot make it to PIR here is the site for streaming.

Congratulations to this week's Captain's Cup winners!
Div. 042 won in the non-integrated (all-male) divisions while Div. 907 won in the integrated (male-female) divisions.
Captain's Cup is a friendly athletic event held on the weekend prior to their graduation. The recruits get a free morning to enjoy some fun competition between the divisions in the training group.
Events include basketball, volleyball, relay races and more. There is one winning division for the integrated divisions and one for the non-integrated divisions, and each winning division receives a traveling trophy to display in their ships.

  • Phoenixmom

I'm so sorry Linda to hear that, is there any way that you can receive calls on your cell phone? maybe speak to your Boss that you are expecting calls from BC? I put info on how you can forward calls to your cell phone. But I would speak to your Boss at the same time. Or just let them know you are expecting a important call. at the same time he may be calling for information

  • Linda

I'm really sorry Linda I can't imagine how you must be feeling. Try to talk to your Boss or just let her know you may be receiving an important call that needs to be answered. I cant imagine them telling you no.
