Here is the link to follow to read about the new standard:

Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp

In a nutshell... starting January 1 of 2018, ALL Recruits will be required to pass an initial run standard BEFORE they commence basic military training. If they do not pass the initial run standard they will be given one more chance within a 48 hour period to retest and pass. If they fail to meet the requirements for the initial run standard they will be separated from the Navy with an entry level separation, which allows them to reapply at a later date with a waiver from Navy Recruiting Command.

Please read the article in the link for more details.

Check out https://www.facebook.com/NavyRecruitTrainingCommand. The PAO posts random photos randomly. There is no guarantee that your recruit will be photoed, but it is fun to look at the photos and get an idea of what is happening at the RTC. They do not have pages that follow a particular division.

https://www.facebook.com/ASBPGreatLakes has pics of some of the recruits who give blood while at the RTC. Those donations occur about 2 weeks (10 to 16 days depending on the division) before PIR.

the January TG will be the only TG eligible for Christmas Adopt-A-Sailor. You will receive a separate form in your packet that your recruit sends home to you. For more information about Adopt-A-Sailor please go to this link on the RTC FB Notes page:

Ladies thought I would put this site on here has information on different restaurants in Waukegan.

Waukegan, IL - Official Website - Restaurant Guide

  • Phoenixmom

When I went to PIR we drove from O'Hare airport to Waukegan we missed the tolls all the way. had no problems.

You can avoid most tolls by using Route 41, it goes all the way to Chicago and will get you from Chicago to RTC and nearby lodging. If you are traveling through Chicago on the way to and from Great Lakes, follow 94 East which merges into Route 41 to avoid toll roads. Your hotel may be able to give you directions to the RTC that will avoid toll roads.

  • Phoenixmom

Well Ladies have a Great evening, hope the info was helpful.

To those attending PIR this Friday please be safe on the roads! and Congratulations to your New Sailor and also to you!

Psalm 121:7-8 The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.”

May the calls and Letters come your way God Bless you all!

So, if your SR has never seen snow they'll wake up this morning to about 3.5"!! ❄⛄☃

  • mkl7993

I read they have SR go out and shovel, even in the middle of the nite. They may not like snow after that....

  • Chipmunk

mkl7993 - True, True!! My sailor is just thankful that he went through BC in the summer when it was hot and not even as hot as he is use to in our OK summers. Hooyahsuzy - only our youngest likes the cold and is bothered that we are at 65' and no snow!!

  • Phoenixmom

Good Morning Ladies hope all is well, Talking about Snow the low is 7 and the high will be 20. Don't know how you can get used to that coldness. I would probably hibernate during the winter there, My Son said you adjust to it but I don't think so. Brrrrrr!

Welcome New Comers glad to have you along, please post any questions or concerns you may have we have Fabulous Mothers/Aunts/Sisters/Friends/Grandmothers and of course the Admin Ladies here willing to answer your questions. Even just to post your feelings, we all have done it and it is nice just to have someone to talk to who understands what you may be feeling. Have a Great Day!

mkl7993 I am with you on that, what a way to see snow by shoveling it! LOL!

  • KKNOhio

I have a question on the photos.  This is week 4 for my son.  Is there a way to get a photo before PIR?  My husband's birthday is early Jan and I wanted to get a blanket made for him.

  • Phoenixmom

KKNOhio I don't believe photos are taken, only way I know is if you go to the RTC Sites and hopefully you can get a glance but then that isn't always a plus.

Are there any official RTC sites?

Yes, check out https://www.facebook.com/NavyRecruitTrainingCommand and http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/. They will have lots of information for you. https://www.facebook.com/NavalServiceTraining also has items at times.

Hi Kami not finding any info as to finding out if form was received. so as long as you did the security form and sent that in also you should be fine.

  • Bloom425

Do you need a gate pass to drive onto the base?
  • Phoenixmom

    Driving on to base.

Driver’s license, vehicle registration, proof of insurance or rental car agreement and graduation ticket must be ready to present to security at access points. Everyone in the car ages three and over must show their ticket to graduation. If someone in the car over the age of two does not have a ticket, they are not allowed through the gate, no exceptions.

  • Bloom425

Thank you so very much for the valuable information. I certainly appreciate your help. My son’s letter didn’t say anything about a password as I had read in older posts. That was probably old information. PIR travel planning is stressful with all the logistics. Have a wonderful day.

  • Raequel ⚓️

Which hotels does anyone recommend for pir weekend?

  • Phoenixmom

Raequel I would Google hotels in Waukegan, me and husband, Daughter son in law stayed at the Residence Inn it was convenient for us, but I hear a lot of the MOMs speak on the Navy Lodge, when you receive the form letter there will be a brochure enclosed with all the Hotels that are near.

PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend

at RTC Friends and Family Brochure July 2017 rev.pdf.)

  • Phoenixmom

And also wherever you stay let it be known that you are their for PIR and they will decorate your door for your Son/Daughter a very nice surprise.

  • Phoenixmom

gate pass and password was back in Sept. when I attended PIR I thought that was so much easier than picking up the tickets and waiting in Line, we had no security form to fill out. But I do recommend to take a small handbag and clear if you can find one because you will have 2 searches and it was much easier. Clear Plastic can be bought at Wal Mart looks like a makeup bag.

  • Phoenixmom

    Q. What items can we bring or not bring to graduation?
    A. All persons, articles and vehicles are subject to security searches. Metal detectors and other security devices are in use onboard Recruit Training Command. Expect a delay at the security checkpoints due to this added security requirement.

ITEMS PERMITTED INTO GRADUATION CEREMONY: Small bag/personal item (purse, satchel, etc…), small diaper bag, small camera bag, and personal wheelchair or walker. Strollers and car seats are allowed but discouraged due to space limitations (you may leave them in your car).

ITEMS NOT PERMITTED INTO GRADUATION CEREMONY: Large bags, backpacks, luggage, posters, signs/banners, gift bags of any size, and flowers. Alcohol, illegal drugs, knives or weapons will be confiscated by security. Any person found with these items will NOT be permitted to enter the ceremony.

NO WEAPONS! Weapons possession on federal installations is highly regulated and those in violation are subject to arrest and prosecution.

  • Phoenixmom

    Q. I plan on driving to graduation, what do I need to do?
    A. Guests who intend to bring their vehicle for graduation must have a valid driver’s license, proof of registration, and insurance along with their graduation tickets. If you are in a rental vehicle, then the rental agreement will suffice along with your license and tickets.

If you do not have these, security will not allow you to bring your vehicle onboard the command. You may arrive to the gate via taxi or hotel shuttle and walk onboard with your valid photo identification card. The Visitor's Center, USS YORKTOWN, is a short walk from the gate.

To forward calls from your home phone to your cell phone, for most phone providers the code is 72#, but it may be different for some providers. Dial 72# from your home phone. Then when you get the dial tone dial your 10-digit cell phone number (including area code). You should hear a couple of tones and your cell phone should ring. If it doesn't ring, repeat until it does and your calls will be forwarded to your cell phone. When you want to cancel the call forwarding, pick up your home phone and dial 73# (it may be different for some providers). Hang up and call your home phone from your cell phone to be sure that call forwarding has been cancelled; if not, dial 73# again. Check with your phone provider if you are unsure of the codes to use.

  • Phoenixmom

For those always asking if taking a hotel shuttle to PIR is better than driving, here's the upside and downside of this: The upside is what everyone stating that the shuttles get to by-pass traffic so you don't have to sit in a long line of traffic. Okay, fine. But then what? Then, the shuttle dumps you off at the gate where, depending on the number of recruits graduating with the more recruits, the more guests, you'll be standing in line at the gate as the guards check each ID against each ticket and then each guest has to have each of the bags search by security. And then, you have about a 100- to 150-yard walk to the visitors center. If it's winter and it's 5 degrees out or temps are sub-zero, and it's windy and the snow is blowing sideways, that is going to be one hellava walk for you, especially for the eldery guests or young children. Wheelchairs are available upon request, but you have to wait until one arrives. Suddenly, sitting in a long line of heated cars doesn't seem so bad. If you are not dressed properly for the weather, including those who insist on wearing cute little short dresses and heels, you are going to be quite miserable for this walk. If weather isn't so bad, and you have no issues with cold

That was a good question Kami about how to confirm the access form actually made it back to RTC. I see they ask for an email address, I don't know if they are emailong? Or, only need that if there's a problem with the information provided

  • Aurora

    Kami,

I think you would have gotten a call if your SR didn't get your access form.  When my son finally got to call home, he told me they hadn't received our form yet and they had him write down the info over the phone.

  • Phoenixmom

Good Morning Ladies, Hope all is well with everyone.

Welcome the New Comers to this site Glad to have you along.

Ladies I do not believe there is a way to check to see if forms were received your Son/Daughter may be able to tell you once he calls, as long as the info was followed and sent back to the address given I'm sure all will be fine. Have a great day!

  • Proud mamma

Good morning, and thank you for all the information you send. It just makes things a little easier.
