Is there anyone that has a SR in RCU? My son has been in RCU for a little over a month now and said someone else just came in with a broken ankle and will be there long term with him, along with an SR that has been there for 11 months.  I just wanted to reach out to them because I know I have have felt so alone in this process since he isn't in a division anymore.

  • Kelz89

Wow they keep them for that long? Do they go back into training after they heal?

  • Phoenixmom

Ship 4 is also the RCU-Recruit Convalescent Unit-where sick or injured recruits go to heal and be cycled back into another TG. (Join RCU SHIP 04 DIV 2341 for more information.) The FIT Division is also located here. Recruits who have failed a final fitness test (most often the swim or run) are sent here for intensive training in order to pass the test prior to having Battle Stations-21 (BST).

  • Phoenixmom

    this also will give information.

     http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/faq.html#temp_holding

  • Blakesmom

@Kelz89 yes they can keep them that long

@Phoenixmom I've tried that group, there hasn't been any activity.

  • Phoenixmom

I would say ship 5 but I believe that is for those who are being processed out. and that is the only info they give sorry Blakesmom. I will see what I can find.

  • Phoenixmom

    SEPARATIONS

    Q. My recruit is being processed for separation. What does this mean?
    A. Your recruit has have been removed from training for either medical or legal reasons, or failure to meet Navy standards. The majority of these personnel are awaiting their administrative discharge from the Navy. Those who are being processed for separation will be retained at Ship 5. So when you hear or see the name Ship 5, know that it pertains to where your recruit is being housed.

  • Blakesmom

Thanks Phoenixmom, I don't really need anymore info, I was just wondering if there were any other parents that were feeling stuck in boot camp for months.  It looks like he will be in RCU until at least April now.

  • Blakesmom

He isn't being separated. He is in Ship 4. When I first started going thru this, there wasn't a lot of information. I was confused has to what the Navy would do with him when I found out he broke his ankle. Now I know he gets to stay and heal in boot camp and gets to go to a division after his physical therapy AND he has to complete a preliminary run test.

  • Phoenixmom

. My recruit is in RCU (Recruit Convalescent Unit) or on hold to pass a fitness test (FIT). Are we authorized a visit?
    A. A recruit who is in RCU or FIT is still in training, therefore are not authorized visits. If you received a phone call from your recruit stating they have transferred to RCU/FIT, please note you will not receive another phone call from your recruit until they complete their training requirements. Recruits are only granted phone calls when they have a change in status, meaning they are going to graduate. You should not plan on attending the graduation if you have not received a phone call from your recruit stating they have met the requirements and will be graduating.

  • Phoenixmom

Blakesmom I understand that is the only info I can find and your right there hasn't been anything posted on ship 4. I am so sorry to hear about your Son. And I pray for him to heal quickly.

  • sambam32

the no news is good is for the birds... this mama needs to hear from her son!

  • Phoenixmom

I agree, but they make the Laws in there. I was hoping I could find better news but haven't so far.

  • Blakesmom

Thanks for looking Pheonixmom! The no news is good news theory really is hard, but when it is the first time your baby bird has been injured and you don't get updates but every 3 weeks, is really hard.  I trust he is getting the very best medical attention from the Navy, but he is still my baby.

  • Phoenixmom

I agree totally with you  Blakesmom, and I am really sorry for that. and yes I believe no matter the age they will always be our babies no doubt. It is hard enough going thru the weeks of no call and then for it to continue seems unfair. But please let him know we are routing for him to heal quickly, and to stay focused on what still needs to be done. Best wishes to him.

  • Blakesmom

I appreciate you and the hard work you do to keep everyone updated. His call was disappointing today as he will be in a cast for 2 more weeks (8 weeks total) and then transition to a walking boot and begin physical therapy.  He is so eager to get to physical therapy, but made the right decision to stay in the cast and not push it too fast.

  • Phoenixmom

Thank You Blakesmom I appreciate your kind words, and please keep us posted on his recovery.

  • NavyMom21

Got a letter from my son today. He graduates in 2 weeks. He seemed in low spirits after our phone call. He said it was the hardest phone call to ever hang up on. Breaks my heart to feel such sadness in his letter. He can't wait to graduate so he can see what is going on in the world. He is such a social kid, it's hard being locked away from the world

  • Phoenixmom

NavyMom2 so glad to hear you received a letter, but I'm so sorry he seemed so down. It has to be very Hard for them to be secluded away from everything, That is why I mention all the time to stay strong because when you get those calls or letters and they start crying or just feeling really low we have to find a way to lift them up, You wouldn't believe how so many start to second guess themselves, especially thinking  if they have done the right thing. Thank You for staying strong for him, all this will pass and he will succeed. When my Son was in BC he said they all had a calendar and was marking each day off and counting the days it would be over and done.

  • NavyMom21

My son said that the RDC's won't let them count down because they find it a distraction. I still do it in my letters for him and it gives him hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I'm really all he's ever known. He has a dad, but wasn't very involved per say. Did his time and every other weekend but my son has always been close to me. He was also upset because he got off the phone and then got hit hard with IT because someone urinated on the bathroom floor and didn't cop out to it, so my son took the hit for ti.

  • NavyMom21

2 hours later he was exhausted he said, and MAD!

  • Phoenixmom

You Know Navymom2 my son told me some stories while he was in BC, and sad to say their are those that act up and do really stupid things and actually the whole unit gets in trouble for it and then they tend to lose their calls or have to do more workouts. some continue to talk at night when light are out and you are to sleep so the whole unit gets hit. So I can understand where he is coming from.

  • Paul

One of the phrases my son has used is "we got beat" I know they can't be touched physically so what does that mean?
  • Phoenixmom

Actually even in A school it continues, some just don't grow up I guess, and it makes it Harder for those who are determined and focused. I just cant see going into the Military just to goof off. But it does happen. So if your Recruit calls he/she will probably gripe and when you hear the stories it will be unbelievable but it happens.

  • Phoenixmom

I'm guessing more chores or duty watch or physical workouts. so it depends Paul, but the whole unit will have to endure it for one person. My son use to tell me that some didn't know how to count, so others would try to help the other person out but he never wanted to learn to do it right and every time the unit got punished.

  • ReeseMom

My son has also talked about the, "Beatings". He said his RDC was with the Marines for 10 years and they have had chairs thrown and a table broke when getting yelled at. His last letter said he was used to the, "Beating". I think he is talking about getting IT (intensive training). My son was in the Marines for nine years so this sounds normal to me although it still bothers me. My heart thinks, Oh my poor baby!

  • Phoenixmom

Yes, it is bothersome. But this is the time they will begin to weed out the ones that  cause trouble or cannot follow instructions or are what they say "weak". So the yelling in the face and all is true.

  • NavyMom21

Yes!!!  that is the term he used. That he got BEAT for 2 hours.

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

"Beat", "Beatings", are IT- intensive training.

    "Hits" are demerits.

  • Phoenixmom

FTLW you are awesome! Thank You for that, we new it had to be something to that nature.

Well Ladies/Gents have a nice Evening and a fantastic weekend. Thank You all for posting and sharing it's been nice hearing and also learning as we go. Please be safe in your travels wherever you go.

Wishing on calls and letters for you all!

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

I hope I word this right. I want to say in advance that I am not trying to bag on anyone's Recruit, BUT I am going to use the bathroom scenario to try and explain the "mentality" behind situations like this. This is not a personal attack but a generality.

It's about Team mentality. Think about it...what do you think this Recruit will do the next time they are in the head?

Probably check that it is ship shape. If it is not then he will take action about it to make it ship shape. Report it to the RPO in charge of the head, clean it up himself...do both.

Now, let's change the scenario. Sailor is walking along on his ship. Some idiot leaves ordnance lying around. Does he/she walk off or does he/she do something about it?

I know that is extreme...it could be garbage or something, but if he/she just walks on by and a higher ranking sailor see's that... yeah, expect to be called on it.

You're being trained to be hyper aware of your surroundings...it could save your life and the lives of your fellow shipmates.

It starts in Boot. It sucks if it happens to you. Maybe others will see it and it will motivate them. Maybe the idiot that peed on the floor will feel remorse and do better.

  • NavyMom21

Hopefully the guy will not pee on the floor again. Lol. My son just happens to be the RPO in charge of the head. He said he checked it before making his call to me and it was clean and ship shape. After the call when he got back somewhere in the 30 minutes someone decided to pee on the floor and leave it. Being the RPO, my son got the "beating" haha. He was not a happy camper. I'm sure he will have a nice chat with his fellow guys.

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

Ok, well now I know why he got two hours!!

Yeah, I hope it is a real nice chat!!!

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

Oh, and that double sucks for your son :-/

    I feel for him...

  • mkl7993

My son mentioned whoever is in charge of something gets yelled at the most....

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

    Yup...

  • Jeep1lover

We got our PIR letter today! She has been gone a total of nine days but it feels like forever. Looks like she is in the 900 division. Never played an instrument before but whatever she ends up doing it will be fun to watch. In her note she stated “I’m having a little fun an I’m learning a lot.” I am glad to hear she has good spirits.

  • sambam32

This morning was supposed to be Captain Cup for 1/26 PIR...does anyone know how they did or if it's even over?

  • Linda

Sambam what captain cup my son supposed graduation is 1/26

  • Paul

Linda it's a bragging rights competition for the recruits. Held the Saturday before PIR
  • Linda

Ok so my son shud be in this today then

  • sambam32

These recruits, who are nearly completed with their basic training, put their skills to the test for the opportunity to win the Captain's Cup trophy and the chance to display the Captain's Cup flag during their pass-in-review.

"Captain's Cup is the culmination of the recruit training at boot camp," said Capt. John Dye, commanding officer of Recruit Training Command. "It allows the recruits an opportunity to come together and demonstrate the teamwork and cooperation that we've instilled in them throughout their training."

The morning begins with each division performing a prepared one-minute long divisional chant. Each chant is graded on the amount of Navy pride, creativity and originality that each division puts forth. The chants are graded by Sailors going through Recruit Division Commander (RDC) "C" School and the winning division earns a trophy at the conclusion of Captain's Cup.

The recruits then participate against the other divisions in their training group in ten different events. The events include push-ups, pull-ups, curl-ups, seabag relay, basketball, softball throw, volleyball, firefighting equipment relay, rescue carry and the 1.5 mile relay run. If a tie occurs between two divisions, a tug-of-war is used to determine the winner.

Although the recruits are playing games against one another, this is the first time in their training where they are putting their team building and motivational skills to the test. These are skills that will set them up for success in the fleet.

  • sambam32

Does the shutdown put a halt on the military's benefits and pay?

  • Paul

Sambam32 the answer is yes and no. Pay has stopped from the standpoint they won't be getting a check. But once the government is again funded they will be paid retroactively
