I am weary. My heart has sure taken a beating this summer! If all goes well my oldest son will graduate this Friday. My middle son is somewhere in the process (still waiting for the form letter), and my oldest daughter leaves for BC next Tuesday.
Last week my daughter was able to spend the week with my husband at work. Work is the National Museum of the Surface Navy at Battleship IOWA in the Port of Los Angeles. She has been a volunteer since she was 11 years old. She feels like she grew up on the ship, and wanted to volunteer one more time before she left. She got to help out on some projects that relate to her rate, which was fun for her.
I got to experience being home with just two kids for a week (we live about 500 miles from the ship). It is going to be a tough adjustment for me, but my house is going to be super clean! I took two loads of donations to the thrift store, cleaned out three kitchen drawers, and cleaned my room.

Mustangmom65, way to stay busy and keep your mind occupied. I am a empty nester and my son has been in 18 months now. It still is a struggle , he is so busy with his studies that he will silence his phone and forget to turn it back on. A mom will be a mom and worrying about our kiddos go with the territory. Even on our busiest chaotic days somehow they manage to seep into our thoughts and we find it hard to be at peace until we hear their voice. Prayers to all you Moms going through the same things. Know that the Navy is taking good care of them. Bless your aching hearts.

Good morning. 15 days til I leave for PIR. It is SUPER hot and humid in Houston, as usual. I'm hoping it will be nice and cool in Chicago while I am there. My SR will be staying in Chicago for A School, so I'm hoping to be able to visit him this winter. I miss the snow!
CamsMom - Very nice! Love the Anchor!
mustangmom65 - Stay strong. Prayers to you and your family.

A fire broke out about 10 miles from our home. So far it is burning in an easterly direction, away from us, but many others are in immediate danger and evacuations are happening. Prayers and thoughts appreciated. My little girl is very scared right now. I don't think we are in danger, at least not yet, but we are grabbing a few things just in case.

Phoenixmom - There's nothing like the possibility of evacuation to make you realize just how much "stuff" you have that you don't really need.
We are still okay. The fire is still moving east, but it's growing. Currently 500 acres

We made it through the (somewhat sleepless) night, and it looks like the wind will continue to blow the fire away from us. Unfortunately, that means others are in the path. The estimates are now 2,400 acres burned and 50 structures lost. Turns out the fire started only 4 miles from us. It could easily have turned out differently if the wind had changed. The air attack crews flew for an hour past when they were supposed to stop last night, using every bit of daylight they had to keep making drops. So grateful for them. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for our family.
B'sNukeMoM - No, we are south of there, between Auburn and Colfax along I-80.
So far we have not received a call from Son #1. Normally no news is good news, but waiting for that "I'm a sailor" call has been almost as stressful as the fire. Still no letter from Son #2

Glad you are doing okay mustangmom65.
I was wondering if the chances of them shutting down PIR for in person are increasing and how fast. We made a cancelable hotel room but have held off on flight. I guess they are keeping an eye on everything going on, miss my son but don't want to risk him or anyone else there.
Hoping for another call soon.. we have been flooding his address with letters. August can't go fast enough lol.

Linda— It’s funny you ask that question I actually called the base earlier today and asked the same question but they said keep checking the website for updated information on what the liberty is going to be due to the changing and Covid rules are changing so they couldn’t give me an answer

Linda and JenningsMom-
Hi, I have been wondering the same. Your loved one is going to be the best one to get information from. Also, their really is never a plan the Navy will change their plans, change again amd then change the plans again. I know it’s hard.
Be prepared for anything that may happen. You might have an whole afternoon and evening or you might have more. It’s hard to say right now.
Your loved ones will be the best bet and keep checking the website as well.
Prayers for all of you with PIR’s coming up as we go thru the different changes that is happening.
Big hugs to all of you!!!!

Good Morning Everyone!!
What Partyofseven said is so true. My own experience with my sailor and his PIR liberty was nothing like the "normal" that I found posted on this site. And I knew nothing about N4M all through BC. I was Google searching for PIR information and found this site. As great a job as others have done posting pages and giving information - Needs of the Navy and specifically the needs of your sailor and any special circumstances is always the bottom line. - Plan for the weekend, plan for time with your sailor but make sure you have contingency plans in place, be prepared to change reservations, we thankfully had not booked an expensive motel with a breakfast because we left our motel at 1 AM in the morning the day after PIR to meet our sailor at the airport. That isn't even happening now. So, flexibility is the key and accepting that you are not the one making the decisions and sometimes you just have to sit and wait for 5 hours while all the other sailors are visiting with family and yours is just trying to get their orders squared away with medical so they can actually fly out the next day instead of being sent to THU!! (Temporary Holding Unit - not really a lot of fun for a sailor in limbo waiting to go to A school.)

Shanny
This was just posted by RTC on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
REGARDING LIBERTY FOLLOWING PIR
Beginning Aug. 13, graduating Sailors are authorized liberty following the Pass-In-Review (PIR) ceremony. Liberty comes with rules and regulations Sailors must follow.
While on liberty, RTC Sailors will not consume alcohol (regardless of age), use tobacco products or drugs, visit tattoo or piercing parlors, hitchhike, or drive a motor vehicle. Sailors must remain in the complete uniform of the day at all times.
For all Recruit Training Command (RTC) Sailors NOT transferring to Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes, liberty expiration is at 2100 (9 p.m.). If “A” school is at TSC Great Lakes, Sailors will immediately return to their compartment after PIR to transfer and they will get liberty upon arrival to their new command once checked in and completed with any administrative actions. For Sailors not immediately detaching RTC, Saturday and Sunday liberty hours are from 0800-2100.
The expiration of liberty is in the division compartment, NOT at the front gate and late Sailors will be subject to disciplinary actions that could impact subsequent liberty. Sailors are NOT permitted to ride in private vehicles to their barracks from the main gate, so be sure to return your Sailor to the main gate with enough time for them to walk back to their barracks.
Upon return from liberty, all bags will be inspected for contraband. Contraband includes, but is not limited to: drugs, alcohol, tobacco products or associated paraphernalia, medication unless prescribed by a military doctor, food, magazines or papers, and portable electronic devices (cell phone, ear pods, etc.).
Thank you for helping us complete the mission of liberty while keeping the Navy’s newest Sailors safe.

Good Morning Everyone,
Thank you Shanny and Chipmunk.
Chipmunk- I know right? We will have to wait and see what happens as well.
What the RTC has posted is what we had to do back then as well. We had to drop them off the gate well before 9 pm and we could not drive them either.
The gate was packed and you would see all of them getting out of their cars and walking to the gate. You have to remember that their ships are not very close to the gate so they have to have time to get back to their ship.
Be flexible and most of all enjoy that special time with your loved ones!!!
