Chipmunk - crazy thing is we are upper 80's into Monday and then on Tuesday we drop to 57.  This isn't normal for us lol!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - That is funny. Our weather tends to run that way through most of the winter season. My boys like to say that we only have two seasons, summer and winter. The rest of the time they fight each other!

    Hello Everyone!

I have been so busy that I haven't had a chance to comment here. On 1/21/22 my son completed MEPS and is now in the DEP program. He doesn't graduate (or turn 18) until June and has a date for August.

     JNMnavymomOH I can relate!

He just had his first PT, DEP meeting and Face-to-Face. I have been extremely proud of how seriously he has taken all of this. He's virtually quit working his part time job so that he can spend his time in the gym. He's always been involved in sports until this year. Now, he's focusing on strength training and endurance.

I am so appreciative to have this group as a way of finding information about this whole process. My son, as I'm sure many of you may relate, is less than communicative sometimes.

Thank you for allowing me to share in this space!

  • Chipmunk

swdypdy - You are very welcome!! We are glad you have come and joined in the conversations here. Did you see the post by B'sNukeMom the other day with the physical fitness requirements? My son started running early in the morning, as well as working on his strength and endurance before he went on to BC.

    Good Morning Everyone,

Good Morning!! I hope all are well!

Any of you that have recently been to PIR, be sure to come share your stories here for us and any of our new members. We always love to rejoice with you. I know after my son's PIR, I came home and watched the video replay, I think once a day for the entire week. My son was a section leader so in the front where I could see him, I marked every time stamp where he was at. Then I shared the video with all of our friends and family that could not be there, as well as the time stamps so they could fast forward to where he was. Maybe I was a little overboard, but everyone else had their kids headed off to college and had them home for the summer. Mine had gone to boot camp and was headed to SC for training and a commitment to the Navy that would last longer than his friends who are now graduated and working.

I was coming off of that emotional roller coaster of BC and wanted to show off that both my son and I had made it!

Good morning everyone.  My son is just finishing week 3 (he didn't have to quarantine so he is well on his way now).  I just got my first personal letters from him this week.  three came close together after he had moved to his ship from P Days.  We are doing some snail mail letters and some Sandbox.  He wanted to get some old school handwritten letters to save.  If it helps anyone else new to all of this, I worried a LOT about him being a picky eater and seriously turning his nose up at food that he would not eat at home no matter the pressure.  He is happily reporting that he is eating everything on his tray and looking forward to the next meal as there never seems to be enough food.  Maybe he is finally hungry LOL but he is eating every single thing ex the sandwiches (says those are inedible).  This has made me feel so much better knowing he says he is feeling good and eating a lot.  He is homesick and begs for letters... I am sure you all know, but it is worth reminding, you cannot send enough letters.  I even do some postcards tho the message is short it breaks the monotony and on letters you can doodle and do things to make it more personal than you can on Sandbox.  But in short... my heart feels much more at ease knowing this is the largest of his complaints... homesickness but knowing it is short term!  Keep your eye on the prize!  PIR day!  Hooyah Navy!

  • Northwoodsmom

Lila, so happy you have some communication with your son and he is doing so well. I agree with all the energy output they will eat almost anything set in front of them. They are still building friendship so soon the homesick feelings will probably lesson a little. There is no place at home but it seems a little easier to handle when you share those same feelings with others around you.  Good to hear he is adapting so good and that makes your Mama's heart feel alot better too.

  • Maya2021

    Hello everyone,

I received my first letter on Feb 14th at little more then 2 weeks. It was short letter - that he is doing well, getting tougher and stronger. RDCs are tough but they good side to them and that he is becoming more organized since he left home :-). We also received the Security form yesterday after 3 weeks now. But no phone call yet.

We have sent him couple letters all in one packet from us and cousins and grand parents for him to look forward to few more days :-)

  • Chipmunk

Maya2021 - WooHoo for a letter! I am glad that your SR is doing well and adapting. You mentioned sending a large packet of letters, and that you had the form letter, which means you should have his correct address. I am sure he will enjoy the letters. I would suggest not sending just one large packet of letters but instead multiple envelopes. It might cost a little more, but he is more likely to at least receive most of those letters than possibly one large packet getting lost.

Lila - That is great that you have had some communication as well. I always laugh when I read about the picky eaters that will snarf just about anything at BC. And they do learn to snarf their food down. He is working hard, and he knows he can't just go to mom's refrigerator and raid it when he wants to, so you eat when it is given to you!

  • Lila

Maya,2021, I hope you didn't miss the call. Seriously I almost did.  I was on a work call fortunately sitting still in a parked car so I could concentrate on my call when I saw the call waiting with area code 847!  If I had not read what to look for I would have totally screened the call thinking it was spam and they don't leave a message and you don't get a second shot... so I just got lucky.  He did say he thought his next call might possibly come (tomorrow) on Prep. Day because his RTC mentioned something about calls home possibly.  He has now been there 3 weeks so I guess this would be the "I am still alive" call.  Somewhere on here I saw a post that said all the area codes to watch for and I even took my robo call dumping app off so it wouldn't block the call by accident.  Just a thought.  I hope you hear from BC soon!!

    Lila

  • Chipmunk

Lila - Thank you for sharing! Yes, you will want to turn off any robo call dumping apps that you might have turned on.

    Welcome to our new members!

Yes, I will be sending separate letters :-) thanks for the suggestion.

Lila - No I did not miss the call - I got my son's call around 8:30 PM on Sat. Luckily the phone was with me and not with my daughter:-)

He is doing fine, he was unable to march for some time due to bad shoebite it seems but everything is well now. They march outside in that cold but he said he is getting use to it. He has made some friends, and was very excited that his DIV is at rank 2 and he is liking it. The call was for 20 mins only - not sure when he can call next but glad I was able to hear him and get his letter.

    Maya

  • Chipmunk

Maya2021 - I am glad that you were able to get to speak to your SR. As I recall, my son called about week 3 and then about week 6 and then after Battle Stations - Phone calls are no guarantee though, so stay hopeful but also know that you might not hear when someone else does.

Reminder for all of our new members to this group, since this is a public group, please do not post dates for Battle Stations as RTC considers that the same as ship movement. This is why we encourage you to join your PIR groups when you know when your PIR date is, because those are closed groups. This is all preparation for getting you ready for when your sailor is out in the fleet and going on underways whether short or long term - but it is ship movement.

  • Northwoodsmom

Maya2021, that is great news. I remember when my son was in BC he stated that his division was doing very well and earned a extra phone privilege. That is never a guarantee but when a division is learning to work together it maybe more likely. It takes time for some divisions to gel and learn to work as a team. If one recruit doesn't get things right it reflects badly on the rest because in the Navy you are your brother's keeper. So happy you got that phone call, it makes a Mama's heart beat with joy when things are good with their children.

  • Lila

Maya2021... so happy you caught the call!  And I know how great it is to hear their voice on the line.  My call yesterday was not as upbeat.  My son was not happy because several in his group have caused the whole  to lose half time on phone calls due to talking and not learning/memorizing their required lessons...  He was very frustrated because he is trying to hard to do it all right.  This is the breaking point where the doer's and those with less drive have to really learn to gel and make a team.  Unfortunately, the RDC's have to make it harder for everyone by singling out any lack of commitment.  But is really no different for us out in the work world.  I am glad you son is in a division that has a broad spectrum of "doers" as they will all benefit from that in the end.  Have a great day as they fly by!
