NNS080808-16. Bataan Chaplain Keeps Sailors Mentally and Physically Healthy
By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class(SW/AW) Pedro A. RodrÃguez, USS Bataan Public Affairs
USS BATAAN, At Sea (NNS) -- The command chaplain aboard the multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), began an aerobics and yoga program July 21 to help Sailors stay in shape and reduce stress.
Cmdr. Brenda F. Bradleydavila, Bataan chaplain, began the classes with a focus on Sailors' mental and physical readiness.
"We were looking at creating a program to help the crew to stay healthy," said Bradleydavila. "Something that was fun and motivational at the same time."
With the Physical Fitness Assessment rapidly approaching the program is very timely.
"It's a fun and energetic alternative from the regular Navy physical training," said Storekeeper 2nd Class Omolade E. Jones. "With the music and the participation, it motivates everyone to come out."
Along with the aerobics session, Bradleydavila started a yoga session conducted by Lt. Cmdr. Mike E. Johnston, Bataan's helicopter direction control officer, to help Sailors relax after their daily duties.
"Yoga increases your balance and strength using your own body weight," said Johnston. "It helps to control different conditions like high cholesterol."
Bataan is the fifth ship of the Navy's Wasp-class ships. She was commissioned Sept. 20, 1997, and is the second U.S. Navy warship to bear the name. CVL-29 was an Independence-class small aircraft carrier that was commissioned in November 1943. After serving in both World War II and the Korean conflict, CVL-29 was decommissioned in 1954.

Hey USS Bataan moms - Catherine, the site administrator is looking to find you. She has posted a photo of your ship on the main page and left this message...

you are welcome Milly, there are some helpful links and you should join the family site also. My son is an IT2 and will help your son set up his e-mail
My son called me this evening! He told me he was in the bed when the 6.1 hit & it pretty much shook them out their bunks! They thought the ship had went aground!
Hello Im new to this forum. Does anyone know definitively when the Bataan will be returning home? My husband is on the Bataan and has heard through the grapevine that the Kearsarge is supposed to be on its way to Haiti to relieve them. He said that the ship is in desperate need of repair and needs to go in the yards. I was wondering if anyone else has heard anything.
hmmm i've seen multiple posts here about sailors onboard the bataan not being able to take showers because of water issues. i also saw a post about them returning in april. i would think that would be something that shouldnt be discussed either but yet i didnt see anyone chime in about OPSEC or not discussing equipment readiness or return timeframes on the open forum. let me just delete my account because i don't do the fake thing and i certainly don't do the lying to save face thing either. i asked a question...i didnt come here to be lectured about what should and shouldnt be posted in this forum. i was in the navy for 10 years and my husband has been in for 15 1/2 so i certainly don't need anyone telling me what should and shouldnt be posted on an open forum. anyhoo, i can sense the clique'ish nature of this board already and i don't have time.
my son is on the bataan in haiti he is an airman crew with the hm-14 squadron. not getting to hear from him much. has anyone sent a package to any of the sailors in haiti? i sent my son one and he has not got it yet and i sent it on jan 13th
i think all these guys feel the same my son is so ready to get off the ship also. he has been the navy 2 years and this is his first time staying on the ship.
Dawn they did the same thing to me and i called again and this person said all we need was international calling. i dont know if it will work, i have not been able to get the info to my son to try it, but call verizon again good luck
Hey Bataan families, hope you are all well. I seen this article in the Hampton Roads publication and thought you would like to read a few words about YOUR ship!
yes i mailed the package on jan 20th and the post office is telling me the package is at an intenational post office in haiti. it was not nothing inportant just a buch of junk food that i knew he would like to have. he has been on 2 differnt boats since he has been in haiti. he might get it one day
michelle wish your son happy b-day. i think all of them over in haiti is ready to go back to va, i know my son is, but this is his first time on the ship.
