For families and friends of Sailors who are stationed at Norfolk; for either Sea Duty or Shore Duty Sailors. Just make sure to keep OPSEC issues in mind and not disclose ship movements in advance.
How common do you all think it is for a Navy wife to pack up their marital home and move back "home" while their husband is deployed? This is what my daughter in law is happily planning. I'm a little disappointed and confused as this would involve moving her across the country twice, which of course will cost money they don't have. They have only been married one year.
It's actually a lot more common then you would think. I know several wives who move home when their husbands deploy. They save money because they aren't paying rent, electricity, cable, ect. And it's a safety thing. Our husbands hate the fact that we're home alone just as much as we hate being home alone. My husband went underway right after we moved here last year, and I got in a pretty bad car accident (a deer jumped in front of my car) and because I didn't know anyone, I didn't have anyone to call. Luckily my sister only lives three hours away, so she could help, but a lot of wives don't have that. My husband was upset he couldn't be there, but was relieved that I had family near by to help. So being closer to family and having them around to help while our husband are gone is another motivating factor. Especially if the wife is pregnant. If it wasn't for the fact I have a full time job, I'm sure my husband would try to get me to move back into my parent's during deployment. And I'm sure she isn't happily planning. It. She might be putting on a brave face and acting excited, but no one likes packing up and leaving because their spouse is deploying. It's a hard decision to make, but sometimes moving back home is the best option.
I sure hope you're right Jess, because her not so brave face turned into a how soon can I Ieave face. They are newly married, but not young or pregnant. Home in this case doesn't involve not paying rent and utilities, so saving money isn't likely.
Then it's probably to be closer to family and to have a support system. Going through deployment as a spouse is just down right God awful because you're without your best friend, confidant, and (not be mushy) love of your life for 3-6 months. It's hard enough to deal when you have friends around to keep your mind off of things. It's just flat out depressing if you're by yourself. Lots of wives either move back home or go home for an extended period when their husbands deploy just so they can be around family.
Yeah, I have a full time job that I love, I'm on the Exec Board for the FRG, and I've made a ton of friends, so I have no reason to go home during deployment. But one of the other girls on the Exec Board just stepped down to move back home for deployment. Not all wives go back to their parents for deployment, but it's not uncommon either.
i decided to stay bc making a home here for hubby to come back to was important to me. and you def would get more support here being around ppl going through the same thing. just my opinion.
My DIL is moving back home while my son is deployed. I think it is a good thing. She will be within minutes of her mom, Dad and brother and only 1 1/2 hrs from us.
She is lucky her company has stores both places and have been very nice about letting her transfer back and forth. We will all worry less if she is here.
I don't know about on base, but this is what the Ombudsman sent out today:

Hi Proud Navy Mom of 2 Sailors- Love your Profile foto what an adorable Beagle he reminds me of one I used to have a long time ago.Nope as far as what I have heard just Taxi that cost anywhere from 40 to 50 dollars a total rip off to Sailors and I dont think the airport is that far but they should have something like that a shuttle for them. Usually if possible they share a taxi but that doesnt always work or like Kim says they get rides if they can or know someone who has a car.
He called from the Navy Lodge late last night-said he went to the USO and they hooked him up with a couple of Marines who were going that way-cost him $20. Can anyone tell me when you stop worrying about even the littlest stuff? I really need to let get better! I keep having a nightmare of him on a ship and me trying to find a good restaurant for him to eat at on leave in some distant country if I can't get this under control!! :)
Proud Navy Mon of Two Sailors...My son has only been in about 8 months and I am like you about worring. I just hope as he gets use to navy life and more knowledgeable to the navy way of doing things that I will get better...I can hope for the both of us.
So nice to know that I am not the only one who thinks and worries. I try and not tell my sailor as he would tell me that he is on his own now and has to take care of things on his own. I know it is true but stiill hard to adjust to. I want my son to grow up but when he starts to all I want to do is, well you know.
My son has been in since August 2010 and he is 27 years old I missed 2 of his last Bdays since he has been in the Navy which falls around Thanksgiving a Holiday I really enjoyed when he was home but I have still celebrated and even got a cake for him and my Step Grandaughters have taken the role of making a wish for him and blowing the candles which has been sweet and memorable for Me and my son really enjoys seen the fotos of the girls blowing the candles. I guess mentally it keeps me from being really and totally depressed I guess we learn to adjust a little somehow but one thing I would NEVER STOP doing is Worrying about My Son no matter where he is or how old he will Be or who he is with Married or Single. I wouldnt be his Mother if I didnt WORRY about him from the day that I held him in my arms 27 years ago and he made my Life such a Great Joy and seen him Grow to The Wonderful Young Man that he is today Im Forever Thankful to God to have giving me the Joy of Being His Mother and now more than ever I worry about him because he was injured on his ship 4 months ago and I feel helpless that I cant be there to take care of him like he should be taken care of properly. So you see a Mothers Love is to always worry about your child because there is no other Love in the World that can match it and I Pray to God that My Son can get better soon because my Heart is breaking knowing that he is suffering in pain with his back. I would gladly take all his pain and give it to myself if there was a way as long as he was healthy again. Sorry for going on and on but Im having a bad day missing and worrying about him.
Navy25, I surely feel for you. My son is a corpsman, and I'm sure your son is getting good care. I used to think if I needed care I'd only want Mass General in Boston, but having seen and learned about the Naval Medical Centers, I've changed my mind! Except that I'm not military so I'm out of luck LOL
Does anyone know what a sailor does when he gets to Norfolk . Will he need to get his on way to the base or will he be picked up. I worry about him and being taking advantage of.
Navy25-My heart breaks for you!!! and for your son!! I pray you will be able to see him very soon and that he will be on the mend!!!
Thank you for putting into words what we all feel. Of course we want them to become wonderful men, but it is not natural for it to be so far out of reach of their Moms. Only military moms can understand. Have you been able to speak with or write to his Captain?
Navy25, My prayers are with your son and you, hope he's getting better and just remember a mom's job is to worry about their kids, we just love them so much and always want the best for them. I'm sure he's getting good care and like Debbie said are you able to communicate with him?
Let him know that all your friends on Norfolk Group is praying for him!
My son is also with Sandra's son we all have been on edge with this long deployment but soon we will be united again with our sailors that we are sooo proud of.
Hello everyone! My son is stationed in Norfolk and has been there about 7 months. Wondering if anyone can recommend where he might find the best deal on a Honda purchase?
pschip, he should have been given a sponsor. If he needs to find his own way to the base, it's practically next door to the Norfolk airport (literally) and it's extremely unlikely he'll be "taken advantage of," as the Navy and related industries are the dominant source of income in the area and get respect. Don't be borrowing trouble before it happens, he'll be ok. Seriously! All is ok.
Everything went well with my son's move. Took 16 hours to drive with the Uhaul and autotransport. They have a place at Walker Chase on Tidewater. Completely refurbished. He was told that the Norfolk side was not the best, but she wanted a townhouse apt and she is the one that has to be happy while he is gone so what can you say. I can see what some don't like about the area -- you can look on one side of the street and it is new and the other side is a dump. I think the main thing you have to realize is that Norfolk is just an old town. I have seen worse even here in Birmingham. At least the "other side of the street" is not plowed under or boarded up and vacant. I was impressed with the Navy Lodge in all respects -- no complaints at all. The Navy Fed is just down the street and there is a great Mexican restaurant down the street. I was even impressed with the Norfolk airport. No problems getting out, I went early when leaving but could have gotten there about an hour early and been ok.
Hi Norfolk family. My son is stationed on the San Jac since this November. He just lost his father in a terrible car accident on New years day. He is back on his ship now, and obviously really hurting. Please pray for him I know he would really appreciate it and so would I....thank you so much.
dear dans mom, my son is also on the san jan...my prayers are with you my daughter died this thursday.my son is grieving as well...what does your son do mines a dc
MJ and Claudia My thoughts and prayers have been with your sailors and your families. all day. I know how hard it is to lose family member but not having each other to lean on that must make it so difficult. so sorry for your losses
My son bought his Honda in South Carolina, but he got an amazing deal through the Costco auto buying program. You have to go to the Costco approved dealers and email them ahead that you'll be coming. Go to the website and follow their directions. As soon as he flashed that Costco card, they took $3,000 off the list price and credited us $300 in accessories because we wanted to skip the $300 rubber trunk tray that they, apparently, weren't allowed to take back. Honda also arranged financing at 6% rather than the 20+% Navy Federal was willing to give him. If your son doesn't have a Costco card, it would be worth the 50 bucks for this deal alone.
MJ, I'm so sorry for the loss of your son's father too. Even if you aren't together anymore, he's still the father of your child and that has to be a tough loss for you, as well as the sadness you feel for your son. My prayers are with you both.
Good Morning, ladies. I have a question. I know the tunnel traffic is awful during rush hour. Is it bad in both directions--- both morning and night, or is one direction worse than another in the morning and then in the evening? I ask because my sailor works in NewportNews. He is starting to think about getting an apt and I'm not sure he is considering the tunnel traffic since he has never experienced it...when he considers living in the area of Norfolk, Chesapeake, etc.
Just thought I would see about the tunnel traffic before he starts his apt search. Thanks for any advice!!
Thank you all for your prayers and support for my Sailor....Claudia, I am praying for your family as well with the loss of your daughter. My sailor is a seaman, he went in undes.
Diannep, yes the tunnel traffic adds at least 30 min to a drive. We watch the traffic report every morning and thank our lucky stars we live right across the street from the hospital in Portsmouth and don't need to drive, just walk. Good to see you are still here!
There are many variables to consider (size of bedrooms, ages of children) that can affect a family's safety. This could help - take a look at this page from virginia.gov and scroll down just a bit to "Establishing Occupancy Standards," it goes on to cite examples of different circumstances.
Since this office follows the occupancy statement that HUD issued in December of 1998, we have reproduced a few paragraphs of HUD's statement. "... the Department believes that an occupancy policy of two persons in a bedroom, as a general rule, is reasonable under the Fair Housing Act."
Dianne, the traffic heading towards the base in the morning and headed home at night is peak awful-time; anyone with the reverse commute is in much better shape.
