Congrat's to your son Claudia!!   I'm one happy Mom, Curtis made Petty Officer also.   :-)))

Your so right navy25, how are you suppose to trust your fellow sailors in a crises that they will help you.   It is so sad!!

    Happy Memorial Day!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A`

My son just got his orders for Norfolk. I have to say to come in here and see all the conversations about stealing concerns me. In A school he did not have that problem which surprises me as crazy as it got there. You would think that of all the places the Navy would not put up with this! It sounds like no one is getting in trouble for these acts. Im sorry for your Sailors and that they have to go through this!

  • Sandy's_sailor son

A,,,      There are always dishonest people inside and outside of the military. That is why Sailors are advised to lock their belongings up.

I have a friend who used to be in the Navy. She said that while she was on ship. Someone stole her new undershirts from the dryer.

This is a great article about helping your sailors and their wives, husbands, & kids readjust after a deployment.

The stealing issue is a big thing....but I have heard this saying " Only one thief in the Navy, everybody else is trying to get there stuff back". I sent my son an older version Kindle, they stole the charger to it, not the Kindle.

  • Sue(Daniel's Mom)

My son and his wife live in Hampton. They have a townhouse (2 bedroom) one and half baths. There is a pool, playground area as well as a laundry facility. The rent is very reasonable and only 15 minutes from base.  The area is very good but I'm sorry to say I can't think of the name of the place. I'll get the name and phone number from them and post here. My daughter-in-law feels safe as my son works mids (11 at night to 6 in the morning).

  • Connie(Memphis Belle)

Hello Everyone.  today in our local newspaper a picture was published pertaining to the USS Carr and a Sailor and his wife.  i think i found the wife on facebook but since most of her page is closed i am not 100% sure it's her.  i would love to send this picture to the wife and his mom.  the newspaper identified the Sailor and his wife but i will not post that information here. if you think you can help me get this picture to the wife or his mom send me a message.

  • Connie(Memphis Belle)

Connie~Matt's Mom, i did some checking back on facebook and i am now pretty sure i sent the picture to the right wife!!!  since the picture was released through API it can be published world-wide.....now wouldn't that be the coolest thing ever!  the picture just touched my heart....now hopefully this pretty little wife will get my facebook message and send the Sailor's momma a copy too! i thought about going to the USS Carr N4Ms page but they only have four members and no posts since 2011.

  • Cindy D

Connie, my son is on the Carr! Send me a message or something with the sailors name and i can see if my son knows him. Is the picture online?
  • Connie(Memphis Belle)

Cindy D, yes the picture in on the CommercialAppeal.com site.  i sent you a friend request so i can send the info.  thank you sooooo much!!!

  • Connie(Memphis Belle)

Johanna, the picture was in your paper in CT....how cool!  since it was released by API i figured it could go far and wide.  i never heard back from the wife (sent the pic in a message on facebook) but i am sooooo happy that Cindy D jumped on board and sent it to her son on the Carr who was going to make sure that the Sailor in the pic got it!

goldnG8r, it can be frustrating when a group is quiet and the ship isn't a huge one - but don't give up, you may be the one to kickstart it into action.  Try posting about N4M and give the link to your group on their Facebook page, maybe you'll get some new members - a lot of people just don't know about NavyforMoms!

  • bahkmom09/86

    GoldnG8r,

My son just joined the SanAntonio yesterday....I was thinking the same thing about that group.  My older son is on the Abraham Lincoln and that group is very active so I was surprised how quiet the SanAntonio was.....I will meet you over there!

  • Helen, T-man's mom

My son is on the San Antonio.  I guess since they aren't "doing anything", no one is active.  I know they've been working their butts off to get it shipshape.  Lots of underways and training runs.

  • jballard

Does anyone on this site have family on the Big E

  • RosaEdsmom

Hi jballard~ My son is on the Big E.

  • jballard

Hi Edsmom33, my daughter is on there.  Seems like everything is going OK.  I was worried there for a while because she seemed as if she was letting things get to her.  All we can do is pray and hope these few months go fast. I haven't heard from her in a few days.  Lets keep in touch.

  • emmie<3

Anyone with loved ones on the uss leyte gulf?

Below is a beautiful pic of the USS New York (LPD 21) and the Big E

together in the final deployment of the BIg E and the maiden voyage of the USS NY. My son is on the USS New York and he has many friends on the Big E.  It is great how they get to met up with each other being in the same fleet at the different ports - God Bless them on their Journey - sending hugs and kisses

  • iamuptolate

my Son is also on the USS Enterprise , He is assigned to the USS Roosevelt , I heard that USS Roosevelt might be moving its home port to San Diego , has anyone else heard that ?

  • Micki1465

Cmyhero,  Just sent a friend request and message to you but got cut off.  You really should contact the ombudsman for the Iwo..   They are very good about getting information to us.  I know that they will have information that will be good for you.  Be assured that all is okay on board!

  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

if they are out then they might be in River City (that means no email or phone calls)

just read in the virginia pilot that they iwo, new york and fort mchenry are going to be moved to mayport, fl within the next 2 years

  • momoftwosons

Thanks Micki1465, I followed up on the USSNY with the Pilot and here is the article:

Three Hampton Roads-based ships will move to Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville, Fla., over the next two years, the Navy announced today.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said the first to go will be the New York, an amphibious transport dock ship that will shift homeport late next year. It will be followed in 2014 by the amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima and the Fort McHenry, a dock landing ship. The Fort McHenry is based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek; the other two are based at Norfolk Naval Station.

Mabus had said in February that Mayport would get an amphibious ready group by 2015. According to a Navy news release, the accelerated timeline will ensure the health of Mayport’s ship repair industrial base and reduce the risk of man-made or natural disasters in areas where the fleet is concentrated, like Norfolk.

The Navy has long wanted to move an aircraft carrier from Norfolk to Mayport, but Virginia politicians have stymied the move, arguing against the cost of preparing the Florida base to handle a nuclear-powered carrier.

“The move underscores just how important Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport are to our national defense, and how committed we are to strategic dispersal on the East Coast,” Mabus said.

The Iwo Jima is the largest of the three ships, with a crew of about 1,100 sailors. The New York and Fort McHenry each have a crew of about 360.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I've always wondered at the wisdom of having so many ships in one spot.  The aircraft carrier issue has been dragging on; no such situation with moving these three and relatively quickly, it seems.  Thanks for this bit of news!

  • AshleySuperfly

I'm excited about the move to Florida...that's much more exciting of a place...for me.  Hey, I gotta visit my boyfriend and may spend a lot of time without him when I do...Disney World within 200 miles seems like a good idea to me... :-)  And Disney World WITH him would make my whole year!

  • navymom2011

If my son is on the IWO JIMA now does he stay with the IWO JIMA the while 4 years of his enlistment? When the IWO moves to Jacksonville will he go with it??
  • diannep

Yes, navymom.  He should be assigned to that ship for the duration of his enlistment contract.  If the ship moves within his enlistment contract period, he would go with it.

  • navymom2011

    Thank you Diannep!
  • navymom2011

Thanks Marine Navy Mom, yes, I have joined the IWO group
  • diannep

navymom:  My son was assigned to his ship in May 2010 and his orders were to remain with that ship until Nov 2013--when his enlistment was completed.  He went to bootcamp Nov 2009.

  • Margee'

I have a son aboard the USS Enterprise. Red Ripper-Aimd- CPO. A couple of Moms were asking if any one on this ship?

  • Proudkmom

kk-that does look like a nice place. We are planning to  Norfolk/Little Creek to visit our son in about a month. Maybe we should check into staying there. We have been looking for something close by.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

The Navy Lodge is close to the Norfolk base, but there are hotels closer to Little Creek, so he may prefer one or the other.  By the way, the Little Creek base has its own beach, very nice!  Also its own movie theater and NEX, though not like the big one at Norfolk :)

  • Proudkmom

Thanks Marcy. That is good to know. We have never been there before. We are really looking forward to seeing our son. He hasn't been home since Christmas so we are excited.

If anyone in this group lives within driving distance to New Port Richey FL (surrounding areas include Holiday, St Petersburg, Clearwater etc I will be there on vacation and I am going to have a get-together for all of my navy Mom friends who would like to join us on Wednesday afternoon/evening. I will have goodies/food and we can all sit around (or in if you prefer) the pool and just have a fun time getting to know each other and talking about our recruits and Sailors. If anyone is in that area and would like to join us please send me an email and let me know. My hubby will be away on a fishing trip and we were gonna do it Monday because he wants to be there but that is our 1st wedding anniversary <3 So, I would love to have you join me and others and you will get to meet my Sailor as well :-) The date is Wednesday June 27th. If you would like to meet but that afternoon or evening isn't good for you let me know and we will set up a another time while I am there :-) I am so excited to meet some of my navy Mom friends!!! My email is uniquememorymakers@yahoo.com

  • Proudkmom

kk-thanks so much. We are so looking forward to seeing our son. Glad you had a good trip. Was there anything special you did in that area that you would recommend?

  • polli k

When our daughter was stationed in Norfolk we too went on the Wisconsin and also the fab  naval muesum there.. About three months ago my uncle who was in the Navy quite awhile ago, mentioned as we were talking about ship and Norfolk area..said " I took the Wisconsin to Scotland once on a mission". He was in the Naval Special Forces  and has never really said much about his missions.. We all laughed and said small world!

  • Proudkmom

Just got our reservations for Navy Gateway at Little Creek. So excited to see our son in a few weeks!

  • Christy

Proundkmom, you will have a great time seeing your son and visiting Norfolk.  I just got back from there seeing my son.  Have fun.

  • momoftwosons

Prior to my sons deployment we went down a few days early and rented a hotel room in Virginia Beach only 20 min for the Norfolk base. Great restaurants, beach, entertainment, shopping and just spending the time with him on the boardwalk. We slept late, out to breakfast, the VA Aquarium was fun too with lunch on the water.

Liking it so much hubby and I are thinking about relocating retirement - but now his ship is being relocated to Mayport, FL - so may just look into Myrtly beach area.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

That pic at the pier is so cool!!  Of course, I probably wouldn't have recognized him and walked on by LOL

I heard he was also at Charlie's Cafe on Granby where we've had breakfast - a neat little diner-type place by the way.  Also for those going, there's Doumar's, a drive-in BBQ place, been there since 1904.  that's been on the Food Network, they hang the tray on your car window :)  I could go on and on!! :)

what do you mean by "the transition for child support"?  if he was paying child support before joining the navy all he should have to do is notify the child support office where the order was entered of his new circumstances (if court ordered).  if he was just paying to the mother then he can put in an allotment to go to her (or a bank account) directly from his pay.  that's how my daughter gets it, it comes directly out of his pay and then into an account she set up just for that reason.

be advised, if he is ordered to pay child support and doesn't the mother can go to his command about it, which isn't a good move.
