For families and friends of Sailors who are stationed at Norfolk; for either Sea Duty or Shore Duty Sailors. Just make sure to keep OPSEC issues in mind and not disclose ship movements in advance.
Are there any families that would be willing to open their homes to Sailors on Christmas Day if they are unable to go home and be with their families? I know a few Sailors that will have 'second' leave and may be alone on Christmas Day. I will pass any information to those that need it. Thanks so much!!!
I live in NC on the beach, about 1 1/2 - 2 hours south, and my home is always open if anyone needs a place to run away to, get away from the base, etc. If anyone needs a place to go for Christmas let me know.
Sharon-Deigo's Mom- John and I open our home every weekend and especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. We would love to open our home to those sailors who have 2nd leave. Let us know who they are and how we can get in touch with them.
Yvonne, I will share let those moms know to get in touch with you here. This is awesome that you do this, I know the Sailors would appreciate a great home cooked meal with great company!
I forgot to say earlier that any sailor is also welcome for thanksgiving.. we don't have a lot but we are good people and more than willing to share what we have.
My son is in Norfolk and has been there for 1 year. I have been very blessed to have not missed a Thanksgiving or Christmas with my son since he left back in Feb 2012. This will be the first Thanksgiving that he won't be with his us, I am hoping he can be with his friends and their families in Norfolk.
John and Yvonne,
Sorry for my delayed response and thank you for the invite. Work has been crazy. I will be in Norfolk Oct.11th for work and not sure if leaving Saturday or Sunday. I work in the Norfolk area every 4 to 6 weeks and had planned to spend the weekend with my son. Turns out he just started his duty rotation this week and will have duty the Saturday I will be there so I may just come back early. He was just home this past weekend so I got to spend time with him.
If you end up staying, you would be welcome to join us for a board game and dinner on Saturday. :) Otherwise maybe when you are here another time we could get together for coffee(or in my case tea) :) John would be the coffee drinker. :)
Thanks Sharon-Diego'smom for being willing to let the other moms know about our invite. We look forward to other moms connecting with us. :)
Sailors mom,
We would be happy to invite your son to our home on Thanksgiving! And also on the weekends if he would like to come over and join us and the other sailors who come over.
Tonya M- We're not Baptist, and we don't know of one near the base off the top of our heads, but we do open our home on the weekends and feed the sailors and play board games with them on Saturday evenings. And on Sunday at 1:00 we sit down for a home cooked meal and afterwards we spend time fellow-shipping or watching a Christian movie or sometimes sharing Scripture and talking about it, or sometimes encouraging each other when one shares about the difficulty they may be having on their ship.
Just thought I'd let you know we're available for your sailor.
My sailor called last night, happy sailor..has only been there a week, classing up for C school on Monday...said he likes it there, much better weather then soggy Pcola. So far has had no problems figuring out where everything is, found all the basic he needs gas station, bank and super walmart...:0 He said he spent the first day in his new room just cleaning it now he fells better in it....he looked up some of his Pcola buddies and they are getting together for some fun this weekend......makes a mom heart feel good to get an upbeat and happy sailor phone call!
I think that it is great thing that you are doing for these Sailors. I just recently visited my son because he is on limited duty from a blood clot, I saw so many sailors sitting along eating and just looking at their phones. They are lonely up there, I know my son is alone alot of the time and just in his room. If it wasn't for their cell phones they would have almost no contact with anyone other than when on duty. Norfolk and Portsmouth is very popluated with militray but they still are so alone. So thank you for opening up your home to these men and women. My heart goes out to them.
Just got a call from my Sailor from a number I didn't recognize. He was calling from his LPOs phone because they wanted him to call and make sure I was ok and if I am being affected by the storm/hurricane. Bless his heart! I'm sure he wanted to tell them, "she's got this!" He knows how many times we've done the "hurricane" thing. But, it was nice to hear from him!! :) It's actually quite a nice day here right now...a little cooler and sunny! But the rain will come....
Thank you donnab. So how recently did you visit your son? If you are ever here again we would love to meet you.:) And if your son ever wants a home cooked meal and have some fun playing board games with other sailors and us he would be welcome to come over. And if he needs a ride we would be happy to pick him up and take him back to the base.
Sailor just text looking for a place in Norfolk to sew on his patches...any suggestions? The base one is closed plus he said they usually take to long...:) Thanks....
Beachbunny.... "They do have rec centers, bowling alley, movie theater, etc. They can rent boats to go ocean fishing as well. They can fish from a pier on base. Checkout the mwr site. http://www.discovermwr.com/navalstationnorfolk/index.html
One of the female sailors who comes over to the house has just purchased a sewing machine and has been sewing patches on uniforms for other sailors as a little side business. I would be happy to let her know your son is looking for someone to do that. Hopefully we can connect the two.
Yvonne I would love to get the female sailor's info that is doing sewing on the side in case my son needs work done. Just pm me the info. Anything to help a fellow sailor make extra money.
I remember a couple of weeks ago there was talk on this group about mail problems for the sailors in Norfolk. My sailor got there last week for C school and gave me his address...another sailor go their the week before and gave his mom his address to ship his laptop and some other items...they showed up on time on Wed to his new squadron......did the other sailors get their mail worked out? Wonder if it depends on where you are working on this base? Just thought I'd post, encase anyone needed updated information.....
My son moved from the ship to the barracks this week. He is really happy now that he has a bed!! Lol I asked if he has an address and he said he doesn't know it. He said he would try to find out and let me know. Said the barracks are nice and he is no longer "living" out of his car. :)
In Raleigh, NC working today and heading to Norfolk tomorrow morning to work and visit my son for a few days. Miss that boy so much. A bit on the cold side and raining.
I sent you a friend request so I could pm you Crystal's info about sewing on patches. I think that's the only way it will be private.....unless the inbox is private, and I think it is.
Yes, all over the world - and also here at home in cities that don't have a Navy base - or even water nearby :) For example, the Phoenix Navy Ball will be next Saturday, and there was one in Colorado Springs, CO last night - http://www.navyleague-coloradosprings.org/navyball.html
