The Fleet and Family Support Center offers a car buying workshop that is really informative.  Have her call the FFSC at 757-444-2102 to get the schedule.

FWIW: my son got the best deal on auto insurance from USAA

@lily_ter- a housing permit is different than getting on base. Many housing complexes and apartments require you to have a permit but it's not the same as a permit required to enter base.
  • Dad of Sailor

And since July you don't even need the permit to enter the base, just an ID now.

  • tatmom4rc(Ship12, Div. 204)

does anyone know how long it takes before s sailor can get housing either on or off base.?

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Just to be clear, you need a military ID to get on base, or have someone with you in the car who has one :)

Thanks beachmom76 and MoCityMom, I will pass on the info: )

Is there anybody here in Chesapeake who is a dog lover who can help me to be a dog sitter for 2 weeks

  • John and Yvonne

Yes. Some of the sailors who come over to our house on the weekends tell us the same thing.

Singingbird, do you mind if I ask which ship your son is assigned to? My son is arriving in Norfolk in 2 weeks, like him to be prepared for the worst just in case. Thanks!
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

    @songingbird,
Sorry to hear about the problems on the ship but rather than renting hotel rooms why don't they go to the gym on base to shower
  • kadikaboom626

So I take it there are not even porta potties on the dock. Sounds pretty lame, honestly surprised that the Navy is not taking care of the most basic sanitary necessities. I'm betting there's a holee in the information chain.
  • tatmom4rc(Ship12, Div. 204)

My sailor said that getting a barracks is based on when ships leave then it will open up rooms for the sailors that have arrived and are waiting on ship.  He hasn't said anything about showers and such - He probably wouldn't tell me.  The problem may be just certain ships depending on how many sailors have homer or apartments to go to in Norfolk.  I hear the hours for the rec center are limited (since the budget issues) and they are not very convenient for a lot of them.

Oh my sailor coming home from deployment will not be happy. He called the other day and I told him about you guys John and Yvonne, He may be joining you. He has really grown in his faith since joining the navy, much to my delight.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Oh fun!  What ship is he on?

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

USS Bainbridge.  Hope I can find a clip, he said it was on at halftime. Did anyone see it?

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Welcome Tammy Jo!  I don't live there but love visiting the Norfolk area.

  • ET's Mom

My son is stationed on the USS Winston Churchill, he has been there I think since the summer. I am from Washington DC & now live in Phoenix Az. I still have relatives in Maryland so my son is able to have a little family close by. He makes friends easily and spent Thanksgiving with his fellow sailor's family in North Carolina. I think that he enjoys exploring Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina. He seems to fit right in.

CO twin sailors mom:  go to Bing, type in USS Gettysburg Army Navy Spirit Video, you will see selections. The first one (today anyway) is the one you want.  My daughter is on Gettysburg and this particular video was filmed on Gett.  Don't know it it's the one you were looking for.

  • Colleen in PA

Hello Tammy, my daughter's ship is deployed with the HST!  She was even on it for training during the early part of the deployment.  Her duty station is Mayport, FL. She transferred from Norfolk to Mayport this past June.

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

My son sent the clip to e, I posted it yesterday on here. Thanks though.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

John and Yvonne Wagner have OpenBibleMinistries
They do minister to our sons and daughters when we can't. They not only open their home twice a week and go pick them up if they don't have a ride Saturday game night and Sunday lunch, but also their pocket books by feeding our kids.

If anyone feels led or knows of someone that finds worthwhile ministries to donate money to, please consider their ministry. I have their address if anyone needs it to send a check.

I don't post much, but I do pray for all the needs. I am sure many others do too, and rejoice with you!!!

Have fun all those families that have loved ones at home now.

Hang in there for all families with sailors on foreign seas, we are praying for you and your children.

My Sailor reports their after his leave for PACT Airman.

  • BTsmom

That was a cool clip! Merry Christmas to all. Enjoy your sailors if you have them. Pray for those of us that don't.

  • Coach Shelia

Thanks so for the post about OpenBibleMinistries! Hope you all have a Blessed Christmas!
  • CatMom509

Be blessed as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus, who took away the sins of the world!!

  • DARmom

Hey - I have a sailor in a pinch! Is there anyone there in Norfolk with a car?  My son in leaving tonight to meet up with his ship and was planning to mail some stuff home but the mail place on the base in closed today. There is a USP place on Tidewater but he needs a ride there ASAP!

  • DARmom

He found a ride - thanks everyone!

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

DARmom. Maybe try John and Yovonne Wagner who live there and host dinners for sailors in Norfolk. Should find them in the members if you do a search.
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Ops I just read the post down never mind good hope he has a good deployment
  • MyLAS (My Lips are SEALed)

Anyone done the victory cruise to see the ships in Norfolk? Is it worth it? Would love to go on a ship but these cruises are from a boat
  • Jo1

    MyLas,

We went on the victory cruise tour last summer and it was very interesting.  You get right up close to all the ships that are docked at Norfolk Naval Base.  You also get to see some of the ones in dry dock.  I never would have thought I would get to see some that close.  Here's a link:

    http://www.navalbasecruises.com/

  • MyLAS (My Lips are SEALed)

Thanks Jo! My sailor said some people have visitors on board (girlfriends, etc) to see parts of the ship. How does that work?
  • Jo1

    MyLas,

I'm not sure how that works.  My sons ship is in drydock.

  • allie1928

Hello...Yes mylas. We took the victory tour of the ships...We really enjoyed it..I even vide oed some of the tour guides talking about the ships...the ships are amazing! Would recommend it...only problem we had was don't mean to offend anyone but there was a tour group of thirty people on our tour who didn't speak English and choose to be rude and talk loudly and made it very difficult for the people on the tour who really wanted to be there and hear what the tour guide said....I would like to do it again without those rude people!!!!'''but son going to Hawaii soon so won't be going back to Norfolk:)

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

My sailor signed me in at the ship's quarterdeck and I was issued a visitor's badge to wear in order for him to show me around.  You need to provide photo ID at both the pier gate and the quarterdeck.  The experience was priceless!

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

I think our son is going to give us a tour of his ship.
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

We watched The Untouchables tonight on Netflix. It is good, rough language but the movie is in French with subtitles so does that count? True story about a wealthy quadriplegic who hires an excon for an assistant.
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Auto correct can make for some pretty fun posts. Keeps life interesting.
