  • TexasDocMom

Hi all, my son just arrived to BC last night. He enlisted as a FMF. Is the training in BC the same for everyone in all divisions?
  • karenmjm

shortk~yes and no, about the training in BC.  If you sailor is in a regular division the training is all the same, but the 900 divisions are "performance" divisions, so in addition to BC training they also have performance practices, musical instruments, singing, flags, etc.  The 800 divisions are all male special ops training.  Other then the fact there are no women in the 800 divisions, in my PIR group the 800 moms were pretty mum about the training their sailors were receiving in training, as it should be with special ops.

    thanks karen

Hello! My sailor just found out that he will be going to San Diego for 2 months then Washington will be his home base. (I hope that's what it's called). He'll be leaving C school I believe, the end of June.  He really wanted San Diego to be his main base because we are in AZ. but that's okay. We still can see him often when he is in San Diego for 2 months.
  • five10fevr(HM school)

what C school was he in?
  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

He is in San Antonio and I believe he graduates from there the end of June.
  • five10fevr(HM school)

my son is in A school and gets C school orders tomorrow. He graduates mid July from A school.
  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

Won't he go to San Antonio or is there another base he'll go to.
  • five10fevr(HM school)

he will go to San Antonio for some portion of C school just unsure what C School he will be going to. what C School is your son going to? mine is goping for lab tech or xray tech
  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

Five10 - My son will be finishing C school at San Antonio the end of the month for psych.Tech.
  • five10fevr(HM school)

how long was the course? thanks for answering my questions.
  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

I think it was about 3 months. He went in March and will finish the end of June. Where is he in A school?
  • five10fevr(HM school)

his A school is I. San Antonio, so he will just be moving barracks. What base will he be at in Washington?
  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

I don't know. They may have your sailor move barracks. I honestly donakt know how that works. I didn't ask my son where in washington but I'll ask him tomorrow.
  • karenmjm

Five10Fevr, my sailor just started Lab Tech C school in SA in May.  From what he has said for Lab Tech training, there is six months of class room instruction done in SA.  In his classes there is both Navy and Army.  "They" are also trying to work in the Airforce requirements, and plan on having future classes include Navy, Army and Airforce.  After class instruction there will be six months of clinical training, done either in SA, San Diego, or I believe Virginia (I could be wrong about the last location).

Ladies, take a look at the METC link to the Med Ed and Training Campus in San Antonio up above. Many questions answered on those pages!
  • DH987 Ship 11 Div 200

    Good morning!!!

Here we are, at Great Lakes still as my son just graduated June 10th from the bootcamp.  He will be shipping out this weekend to start his HM class for the next 14 weeks.  Needless to say that I am very very proud of him!! I am also very happy that this bootcamp part belongs to the past!!  And now to look up for the future in the Navy!  Oh do not get me wrong here but bootcamp was an experience for a mom that you cannot forget... :) Have a great day!!!

  • vettespace

DH987, Congratulations to the new Sailor and future Corpsman!
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

DH, congratulations is he leaving for SAT today? Bootcamp is an experience. I think it is worse for the parent than the SR.
  • mamawalrus

Hi all... Looking for a mom who has a son in Class 160,, mom's name is Shannon.  My son told me to find you on here, he and your son are friends  :)
  • karenmjm

DH987, congrats on the new sailor, from SR, to SN, to HN.  It's a journey!  I got a chuckle out of my son's voicemail when I left him a message yesterday.  He's so proud of his new designation his voicemail message now say, "You have reach the phone of HN ________, please leave a message."

  • gnomesweetgnome Ship 11/Div199

  • Victoria

Hello Everyone...I'm new here :)     My son is on his 1st deployment (since 2/11) and working on his FMF pin.
  • TexasDocMom

Hi, Victoria! welcome! and please let me invite you to another group, for moms with kids in Afghan and Iraq....Link to Deployed Kids Group  You'll find a group of mom and dads, sometimes spouses of those deployed Corpsmen, Seabees...and some Army Soldier and Marine moms as well.
  • mamawalrus

Victoria...what all goes into working on that FMF pin?
  • TexasDocMom

Mamawalrus, there is a link above "General Info about FMF" that gives the necessary requirements to earn FMF. Hope that helps.
  • Victoria

Thanks TexasDocMom! Mamawalrus, not 100% sure what's all involved...I believe its part medical (terms, applications, vitals) plus Naval & Marine history. He says thats the hardest part. Part of exam is oral & they ask a question & it's gotta be an instant answer. He failed it 3wks ago, the history keeps stumping him???And it's hard to get a lot of study time cause they're on 12 hr shifts.
  • Victoria

Yikes, TexasDocMom....I just went to the FMF requirements & obviously my son was sugar coating the requirements for Mom, cause there's a lot more than what he told me. LOL
  • djaltic

Can anyone tell me the website that shows the base at ft sam for corpsman??
  • djaltic

    I found it, lol
  • TexasDocMom

Victoria, it takes quite a while to earn FMF, it's not a regular course, seems like it's self paced but they want it done in a certain time period. I know my son earned it, and then one of his corpman buddies left the Navy after he was not awarded FMF. I think his enlistment was up and he wasn't encouraged to return.? maybe? anyway, it seems to be one step towards more promotions.

djaltic, all the links I've found are up above, please share if you find any good new ones!

  • karenmjm

    Cool trivia, CorpMomM!
  • mamawalrus

Victoria... what is your son doing now?  Do they get more then one chance to take the test?

  • mamawalrus

Ok read the above link.  Questions..can they be labled FMF without earning the pin yet?  In other words, they leave A school, so FMTB and get attached to a Marine unit back east.... or do they have to earn the attachement?
  • TexasDocMom

FMF is a qualification, and no, they will not carry that pin or qualification title without earning it first. Probably would not be a wise move...those that have earned that FMF pin are understandably very proud of it and the work they put into earning it. Corpsmen earn that pin while attached to an appropriate Marine unit, when the CO selects them to do so.
  • Victoria

@Mamawalrus, Right now my son is a Blood Coodinator attached to a Marine unit in "A" he's already completed the FMTB training and they have him working on the FMF. I'm confused on the testing part, he took a written and an oral exam. Written he passed, oral he did not & yes they will allow him to retake. He said it's difficult because you have to immediately give answer, no real thinking about it and it's Navy and Marine stuff. He says he knows it, but can't get it out quick enough. The job he's doing is actually above his rank & that's why they're pushing his FMF (nothing like being deployed and having to study your butt off...LOL) and he's supposed to get a merit promotion when he gets back for the job he's doing now, he's already received 1 promotion since he's there. It's very confusing to me :)

  • mamawalrus

Texas and Tenn moms....you answered my question! YEAH>>> I am not confused now.. hahahahahahaha

I was confused about the FMF part, i thought maybe you had to earn the pin first before you could be FMF.  Ok so my son got his wish list and picked FMF, he is thinking he will probably get that and go straight to FMTB after graduation.  He will graduate July 26th.

Tenn Navy mom... so the other 16 assigned to Marines are different how then the other 7?  My son wants infantry I think so is there a special thing he needs to ask for?

  • mamawalrus

Victoria.. what is a blood coordinator?  How long has he been FMF?  Did he go right after FMTB ?
  • nursemom (Lisa)

My Son will be graduating A school in San Antonio July 18th.  He will then be going to C school for Behavioral Health Tech.  I am a RN and never really had interest in psych nursing.  I am hoping that my Son will be happy with his selection.  Does anyone have any comments on this rating.  I was hoping he would have gone either Surgical or Cardiovascular route.  He had 2nd pick of class.  He is happy about his selection.  I guess this is what makes us individuals and good to know that there are people who find this interesting.
  • karenmjm

nursemom (Lisa) - I am clerical staff, but I have had the opportunity to work with both psych nurses and patients.  There is rarely a dull moment and you learn some really interesting things.  There is not a lot of money to be made in the private sector in psych, that's why there is a shortage of Drs.  I agree with you, if it was my choice I would of went Cardiovascular.  This is a huge money maker in the private sector, and right after Diagnostic Imaging, one of the fastest growing areas of Healthcare.

  • TexasDocMom

    Here's the progression:

    1) A School Corpsman in San Antonio

    2) FMTB either in California or North Carolina (see links above)

    3) IF assigned to a Marine unit, known as going "greenside", then work on the FMF qualification begins, and is hopefully earned.

Not all corpsmen serving greenside with the Marines will earn FMF. So yes, you have to earn the pin/qualification to be called an FMF Corpsman. It is not an automatic given that because a corpsman is greenside that he will have the knowledge and training to earn the FMF pin.

My son volunteered for FMTB while in A School, then went with a Marine unit where he earned his FMF. Sounds like the same plan your son has, Mamawalrus!

  • mikes mom

I don't always share info regarding my son but since we are talking about FMF I would like to say that my son after 2 1/2 years as a corpsman just received his FMF pin : ) I am very proud of him and his accomplishments and he worked so hard for this...
  • vettespace

Princess, that's great news regarding your son's FMF pin...Congratulations to him!
  • mikes mom

Sir Vette - Thanks : ) I am very proud of him
