nursemom (lisa) Congratulations!!! Did you attend the graduation? Was he in the first class to graduate?

Wishing him the best in his much needed field. Congrats again!

  • nursemom (Lisa)

Cali-Mom, Yes my son was in the first class to graduate at Fort Sam in SA.  No, I did not attend graduation, his father did.  I had gone to visit him the end of June.  He is home till 8/1 and will then return to begin classes there on 8/31.  He will graduate from C school in December.  Then its on to who knows where.

Group for moms with kids in Afghan/Iraq link

Welcome to all the new moms! Christine, I've included the link to the group for moms/dads with kids in Iraq/Afghanistan, so please feel free to join us...we're the group no one wants to join, but we seem to have a steady supply of good, strong folks who offer a lot of support. Just want to remind everyone to not mention days of departure/arrivals, countdowns to those days or any travel information concerning destinations out of the US. Your Family Readiness folks will be in touch with you either by email or phone...and they will share with you the information you can share with loved ones and friends.

Just wanted to touch base with ya'll...some kind of bug here, if I sit down, I fall asleep. My dog is disgusted with me.

  • mamawalrus

Officially a Corpsman mom,,,he graduated today!!!!!!  WIll be heading home for 10 days and then to Cherry Point, NC
  • MomByHeart

Congrats Mamawalrus on your corpsman.  Mine loves his job (for now--planning to transfer over to seabees in a year or so).  I'm so proud of him and what he has learned.  He keeps telling me how useful he is now :)
  • karenmjm

Mombyheart. . .and they so want to share their knowledge with you.  I mention to my Corpsman his sister had a sunburn, then I had to define how bad of sunburn and % of body covered, then I got a laundry list of things I could to to help her feel better.  The sister is 17 and doesn't want my advice on anything, must less her brothers.
  • joel's_rackie

Hi everyone! Can i join here even if I'm a wife? Husband is currently in San Antonio, TX for A-school  (graduated BC last  7/8).
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Hi joel's rackie, welcome. Has he started his training yet?
  • joel's_rackie

    not yet. Aug. 8th supposedly.
  • MomByHeart

Karen...you are so right!  the siblings never want to hear anything from each other.  The Navy does a good job of training our guys and gals.  It's wonderful that our corpsmen/women will be able to use their training for the rest of their lives.

  • TexasDocMom

Inga, your daughter taught so many of our kids!! Be so proud!! and now she's off on a whole new world, greenside with the Marines, deploying soon, getting her FMF, and on to become a Chief!

Ladies, I have to smile. Last week, I had to go out of town for a funeral. So I got my son, the FMF Corpsman instructor, to come stay here at the house over the weekend. Our little dog, Rosie was ill and on meds...antibiotics and steroids. Now, the kid who will lecture me on gall bladder and cholesterol stuff and worry about my pain meds for my arthritic hands being too strong....was on the ceiling over giving that dog her meds! He told me over the phone all the things to watch for, lots of water, frequent potty trips, yada yada...but he worried himself almost sick when he got here to stay with her! His dog and Rose never get along well, and she was grouchy with the steroids...evidently it was quite the weekend! Good thing neither dog are fighters, just jealous little brats! So funny! this is the same guy that glued up his best friend's split eye brow, but the dog, I guess...is different!

  • Pam

Great (and funny) story TDM!  Animals can bring out the best in us and they depend on us totally for their comfort!!!  Stressful even for an FMF Corpsman!  I stress everytime I go out of town and have to have someone take care of our australian shepherd.  She's a "mama's" girl and won't even eat for the first day when I have to leave her.

Inga - definately an end to an era there at Great Lakes.  I traveled up there last September for my son's graduation.  Good luck to your daughter and may she stay safe going green.

  • Victoria

Hey I've missed everyone the last couple weeks, as everyone else I've just been so busy. I'm so excited the boy is enroute home for 2wks. Should be here sometime tomorrow if all goes according to plan. As of last night everything was good to go, so my fingers are crossed :)
  • Navy Mom

My corpsman just left this morning for FMTB at Camp Lejeune after being home for 11 days.  Miss him so much already.  Those eleven days went way to fast!  Won't see him again until Xmas.
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Navy mom, my son is leaving on Sunday, not looking forward to it either, will miss him. Says he will try to come home before Christmas. Hope he can
  • MomByHeart

NavyMom....my sailor completed fmtb at Camp Lejueune in April.  He said it was exhausting...about 4 hrs. sleep almost the whole time and rigorous training.  But, he made it through just fine, and your son will too.  We heard from my sailor on Sundays usually, through texts, although I know his gf heard from him more.  This training is good because they teach them so much--including how to keep up with the marines and how to stay alive.   Blessings to you and your son!
  • Navy Mom

Thanks mombyheart.  Talked to my son on Wednesday, the day after he arrived.  Apparently they weren't ready for his arrival as they didn't even have a room for him.  He said that on Thursday he will start working in a warehouse!  I don't understand this but I'm learning really fast not to ask why!  Do you think they have him doing this just until school/training starts?
  • MomByHeart

NavyMom...It could be busy work.  My sailor had down time on both ends of fmtb.  Once it gets started, he will be plenty busy and it's a pretty fast pace.  They have so much to learn.  At least here they can have their phones, etc, even if they don't have much time to use them.  My sailor said they lived in a dorm like situation, which was like going back to bc again after A school where he had a room with only one other guy.

  • mamawalrus

Son arrived in Cherry Point, NC safe and sound.  He is getting settles in and pretty excited to start up.  He will head to CL for the FMTB class in October.

  • eolia (ship 10/div 257)

I would like to introduce myself, my name is Julie and my name of Eolia is from the city I am from in Missouri, we are about 80 miles from St Louis. My sailor graduated yesterday and we had a wonderful time, I am having a very difficult day today we went this morning to the Airport at Midway to give him his phone and ipod, he has gotten to Texas for A School, 14 weeks is a long time he says his school will be done 12-11 and hopefully then he may be able to come home for a visit. If anyone can give me any advise about corpsman school or any other wisdom I would very much appreciate it. Thanks for listening Eolia
  • Cali-Mom (Beagles)

Eolia, the best advice to give is that your sailor studies hard and gets high grades. That will count when it comes to his choice selection for his duty station. The ones with the highest grades select first and have more options. Also, tell your sailor to save some $$ because the did deduct meals all at once approx $500. Alot of them were poor until the next check. Also a couple of them got caught drinking early on and it affected their liberty and affected their grades. Your sailor will like in San Antonio and will have more liberty but in stage - phase 1-3. My sailor will be graduating on Tuesday and coming home Wednesday for 2 weeks. Good luck to you and your sailor. Mine is officially a Corpsman and I'm so very proud of him. Where my sailor is leaving and beginning his new step, yours is also beginning the next step too.  Also join the HM (hospital corpman) A School San Antonio group.
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

I agree with cali mom. My son ended up with less than 100 for 2weeks
  • NavyWife

I would also like to introduce myself (again perhaps; not sure if I commented before!) my husband is headed to SA early in the morning 8/14. Looking forward to getting to know you ladies over the next 16 weeks!
  • corpsmanwifeschu

Welcome Navywife! Go check out http://www.navyformoms.com/group/hmhospitalcorpsmanaschoolinsanantonio to connect with those who have loved ones in A school now.
  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

Hi Jacqueline! Thanks for the info.  I may ride with my sailor to WA. He is going to drive from N.Carolina to Phoenix where we live. Then he's going to go on to Washington and I'm going to go with him. So we may be e-mailing you to show us around and maybe to meet my son?  (Don't let him know LOL!) I'll feel better knowing he knows someone there who he can turn to in case of anything. Hope that's okay with you.

  • TexasDocMom

Welcome to all the new moms! please take a look above the discussion area for links to various groups around N4M as well as some other helpful links.

If your corpsman is deploying soon to Afghanistan or Iraq, let me know, I'll post the link to our group for loved ones of those deployed to the Middle East.

  • eolia (ship 10/div 257)

Navywife we will have to meet up since you are only in Belleville Il. which i cannot believe, if you think you may go down for graduation maybe we could go together, we can get thru this, it was wonderful to meet you the other night and you are so cute and I know you are very proud.  talk to you soon  eolia (julie Fink)
  • NavyWife

eolia, yes! We should get together! I didn't realize they were having a graduation from A School so I hadn't planned on going but I am going to try to make a couple of trips by Amtrak in Sept and Oct if his liberty phases allow it. I would love to also be able to go in December. Is your son done 12/8?
  • Billie

Hi everyone!  My cub is a corpsman who recently went to Okinawa.  Anyone have ideas on what to include/what not to include when sending him packages?
  • Navy Mom

Eolia, Welcome.  First let me tell you that A school is NOTHING like boot camp.  You will be able to talk to him everyday if you want to!  He will however have to study really hard.  They give them a lot of material to learn in a very short time span.  A school graduation will be here before you know it.  After my son graduated from A school he got to come home for ten days!  Best of luck to your son and you!
