HM (Hospital Corps) "A" School in San Antonio

Hello everyone! My husband will be going to HM school in Feb! Very excited! :) I was hoping to get to know some people who can give me advise or just chat.

Ok- I have a small question and I hope y'all can help. My son will report for A school in SA on Jan 8. I would like to get him some gift cards to fast food eaterys right around the base that he may be able to get to once he can go off base.... Any suggestions. ie.. Taco Bell, Sonic, Mc D, etc...  Knowing that he can't take much at all with him I thought this would be a great gift for Christmas that will help him out a little too. Kinda feel like I am feeding him a bit.. yeah not the healthiest of foods, but they are gonna eat it no matter what. Thanks y'all. Many blessings to each of you.

Let's see...I heard there are 2 Burger Kings on base!!  Also, My SR said she went to  a place called Buffalo Hot wings.  Food Gift cards are a great Idea, because she said Army food leaves alot to be desired.  I'm sure she's found all the fast food joints,so I'll try to find more.

 I know she eats breakfast & lunch  @ chow hall, but many times microwaves something  in her room.  Each room has microwave & refrigerator.

I know when my oldest was at school in Pensicola ( Marine version A school) there was not much- or at least he didn't get out that much. He did have the Microwave and fridge. I just don't want to get him useless stuff he has to leave at home. G

Visa gift cards work at the PX as well, from what I understand. My daughter and her roommate do the same thing...eat most meals at the chow hall but have small things and snack foods in their room.

Hi widbradford, mine is going to Spain as well - I am so very excited for him and all the others going overseas, it will be a great experience.

Wow...I thought my daughter was the only one going to Spain! How exciting!!! I wasn't so thrilled at first (although she never knew it) but now I'm getting used to the idea.

Flangl18, I have a question about going over seas. Obviously, my daughter is going to Spain and was given a huge packet of info and a check off list. One of the things on the list is getting with financial counselor. And apparently, there is a specific counselor for her. How does she find out who that is or how to make an appt? I know she has plenty of time still, but we don't want to wait until the last minute. Thank you so very much for ALL of your help!

Oh, and the wing place just off base (down from Walmart) is Wingstop. We were in SA over the Thanksgiving holiday and found it.

hi everyone! my sailor is going to sd cali!! Soo happy for her!!!  Thats where my hubby went to BC (.I went to Graduation) ! My hubby says the hospital is on a different base! does any one know anything and how are their barracks! What does she need for her journey? thanks  congrats to every one getting orders!

That's what I thought, but her instructor says he isn't sure and she doesn't want to go over his head or even have the appearance of breaking the chain of command but she's not getting the answers she needs.

Tink:  You have given really good advice to me over the past year during my sailor's journey.  I have a question that I wondered if you could help with. My son got his first duty station in MD (he is a Corpsman). Just started a week before Thanksgiving. When and how could he request a change of duty stations?  Could he put in for a transfer to a ship or another location anytime? Just wondering how the 2 year duty station requirement works and transfer opportunities. Thanks!!!

Does anyone know if our sailors have a choice whether to live on or off base? (first orders after A school) Also I was wondering if a living space is available on base and they choose to live off base do they still get living expenses?

Anyone know if travel chits were approved for Christmas? WE purchased tickets for our son to fly home, over a month ago, for Christmas. He doesn't seem to concerned that he hasn't received approval, mostly because his wallet wasn't affected.

@flangl18 - are the sailors assigned a career counselor during A school, or does this happen at their first duty station?

Doreen, my son just got there on Saturday, and he is pretty sure they are given time for Christmas.  He says it is closed from 12/16 to 1/3, but they do have to use leave to come home.

My son wants me to send him his cell phone - is it better to UPS it to him at the address he gave me or to the UPS office on base.  I want to make sure he gets it before leave starts on the 16th.

Travel chit approved...I guess I needed to go straight to the boss...I texted his GF this am. I guess she got him to ask-she has a plane ticket here too!! Yay, cannot wait to see my son!

Oh, justing wondering, because I asked my son if his travel chit was approved and he said he didn't know.  lol

My son said he has from the 17th to the 1st.

Watch is only for "x" amount of hours per day. My son said it was 2 hours a day, when it was your assigned day, and they rotate.

Yeah, his GF (girlfriend) is a student at University of Tx. I figured since she bought round trip airfare to be here with him after Christmas (our house) she would pressure him to see that his was approved.

Class 030A will be choosing orders next week!  Lots of research going on...

Good luck Renee...it was a stressful time for us, not knowing which way would be best for her. But she came through like a champ and got it all figured out! :)

Rhonda, good gift idea on the stethescope.  My son  just started classes today, so he is getting the anatomy and physiology coloring books, but I still have some money for something else.

for those ordering medical supplies for your corpsman, I would also suggest that you spend a little more up front on a nice stethascope. You can hear better with the nicer ones. The pen light is a good idea, but try to find one that the batteries can be replaced in-sucks when the disposable ones die, and you need one. Also, look into purchasing some hemostats-I keep two pair in my nursing bag. Twenty years ago, when I graduated from nursing school, a doc would complain if you didn't have a hemostat or scissors when he asked for them at the bedside "what kind of nurse doesn't have hemostats!". Besides, they come in handy when IV tubing is being stubborn and you need to disconnect something.

Great gift ideas! My 2 cents: a nice watch with a second hand. A must for counting heart rate and respirations.

Can't wait to see my daughter ; 12 days until she comes home for Christmas :) I know she's ready to take a break too...missing Michigan snow! Graduation right around the corner...I don't know if I'll make it to SanAntonio for that; been checking airline prices for the week of Jan. that we're expecting and there seem to be no deals...but I feel guilty about not attending the graduation. (Very expensive for just a few days..)
