Marcy....I didn't know that not all Field Meds go green!  I thought that was a part of Field Med.  Interesting.  Thanks for all of your good info as well.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

btw Craig, as far as blood type, it's on their dog tags.  I misread and thought you said pulling blood as in for increasing blood supplies.  Also in A school, they're not providing medical care, just practicing techniques.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

DramaSoul, another interesting tidbit re FMTB - Religious Program Specialists go through training there, too!

  • Hm-in-the-Fam-Mom

Oh Craig everyone loves you soo much here! How
Do you find the time for all these adoring fans?
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I'm so sorry to add this...I will be attending this service the day after tomorrow.  Rest in peace, SSgt Berry.

A Scottsdale soldier who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan over the weekend was remembered Tuesday by his commanding officer as an "incredibly talented paratrooper, engineer and husband."

Army Staff Sgt. Richard L. Berry, 27, was on patrol Sunday in the Zharay District of the Kandahar Province when an improvised explosive device was detonated. Berry and Pfc. Julian L. Colvin, 21, of Birmingham, Ala., were killed by the blast, the Army announced Tuesday.

Berry was the second Arizonan killed in Afghanistan in a little more than a week.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Corpsmen serve with Marines - and the Army.  Individual Augmentee.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Should have said, MAY serve with the Army.  IA is a good example of the things you learn over time, hopefully some here find the info helpful.

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

I think one of the reasons they have them practice on each other is to know what it feels like to have it done. Maybe they will learn to be more compassionate rid they are also on the receiving end?!
  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Drama I would love to see the video since mine is going green!
  • Craig

Marcy - 1st off, prayers to SSgt Berry.  It's so sad when we lose a service member.

Per the blood.  Perfect info.  I thought they actually "installed" (for lack of a better word) more blood into you.  So basically they stabilize the wounded and get them back to a MEDEVAC unit? Correct?

    Great info to pass along....

  • DramaSoul

Marcy...I saw this on the news and my heart and prayers go out to SSgt Berry and Pfc Colvin's family and friends.

And...I had NO IDEA that Corpsman could end up with the Army. Wow...I have A LOT to learn.

  • DramaSoul

So is IA like an IDC? Or more like a 'doc' with the Marines.

And...can anyone tell me please...are the Marines and Navy somehow related? I mean other than being branches of the military.  Are the Marines actually a part of the Department of the Navy?

  • DramaSoul

OMG!! I actually added a video to the discussion on top! Thanks Marcy (and FTLW and AbbyBlue) for helping me to get the hang of this newfangled gadget called the computer. Wow...I actually embedded media!!! SmileyCentral.com

My son would be so proud...or just embarrassed....

  • maboltship

I know this:) The Navy brings the Marines where they need to go. The Marines would say they are not a part of the Navy.  But, the Marines are smaller and don't have their own Corpsman.

  • cindylou61

Drama, the Marines are their own branch.  At one time (I don't know if it still does) their paychecks did say department of the US Navy.  But they are their own branch now; having said that, they do not have medical facilities and use the Navy medical (FMTB=>FMF)

  • DramaSoul

Okay so I kinda thought that was the case about them not having their own medical (assuming that includes dental?) facilities.  There seems to be a lot of animosity between the branches.  I heard a CPO say some very disparaging remarks about the Marines when I told her my son was in A school to be a Corpsman and that he was going greenside.  She said he would need to dumb down a bit among other things.  I thought that showed a lack to tact to say the least.  Her son was going to be a Nuke she said and it was definitely with an attitude.  I am sorry, I just don't think that sort of thing is necessary.

  • cindylou61

I grew up a Navy brat (dad put in 30 years) and I heard lots of put downs about the marines growing up, but I think that when it came down to it, there was a lot of respect also.  My son is also going to FMTB after A-School and through this whole process he himself has gained a lot of respect for our "green warriors".  People can come across a bit brash or pious when talking about the Navy and their own sailor's role, but in my mind it is all one big military and the brain can't work without the body--they are equally important.

  • maboltship

Oh yes!:) You will here a lot of that.  My oldest son is with the Marines Rotc. Each Branch has a lot to say about the others.  I do know the Marines look out for their Corpsman.  They are tight!  So not to worry.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

The Marine Corps is a separate service branch within the Department of the Navy (the civilian branch of the Department of Defense that oversees the Navy and Marine Corps).

An IA is a volunteer of any rate who "augments" other branches where a temporary need exists; video:  IA

An Independent Duty Corpsman is a highly trained (an understatement) medical specialist who can function independently of a medical officer's presence.  This film explains:  Independent Duty Corpsman  I believe you must be a minimum E5.

  • Craig

The Marines are still Department of the Navy.  We Navy guys always joke and say they are the "womens" department.

One think for sure, the Marines LOVE Navy medical corpsmen.  It's a two way street, the Navy Corpsman love the Marines too...

A medical corpsman had this tattoo.... It shows the bond between Marines and Corpsmen... It's awesome....

  • DramaSoul

Thank you for all the info!  And thanks for the links, Marcy.  Lots to absorb.

  • masra45

    hello everyone.

my daughter graduated this past friday from boot camp and left for san antonio the next day.  she will be going to school to become a navy corpsman

  • navymom0612

masra my son graduated this past friday as well. He is also in San Antonio. He was Div 233

  • Craig

Wow, my daughter said everyone in the class did the glucose test. She measured a 46. They told her to get a coke, which she really enjoyed. It funny how much of a blast she's having..... Woo-hoo!!!!
  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Craig when they did the test on my son they were like what the hell. It was really high. He said oh could it be the bag of Swedish fish I just ate? Lol They did it again later and it was normal
  • Craig

I tell you, what I'd like to see them do is have them get measured.  Then have them get 1 coffee sugar packet and eat it.  Then in 10 minutes measure themselves again.  I think it would be awesome for them to see how much your blood sugar goes up and how this could save a diabetic that is having a low blood sugar.

Sometimes you have to see the results yourself for it to make sense.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

This morning, let us pay our respects to a corpsman, Petty Officer 3rd Class Clayton R. Beauchamp, of Weatherford, Texas, who died Aug. 7 when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device while conducting a dismounted patrol in the Shaban District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 6, 1st Marine Division (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), Camp Pendleton, Calif.

  • DramaSoul

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
  • mikes mom

Such sad news Marcy and yet sadly its not the first time for me... My thoughts and prayers are with his family... I am so grateful my son is Blue side now and he won't be going back.. Emotions

  • Craig

mikes mom & Marcy - Did you get my private message? You may want to read it....

  • mikes mom

    Yes we did thank you

  • mikes mom

masra Congrats : ) That is really exciting news

  • DramaSoul

As one of those with a Corpsman who is doing FMTB now at Camp P, the news of HM3 Beachamp's death fills me such sadness, dread and fear.  I keep telling myself he is doing what he wants to do.

  • mikes mom

I am a mother that has gone through those same feelings that you are ... All I can say is your feelings are true and he is doing what he wants to do and that is to save lives... It's not easy for us who stay behind.. I am here for you day or night.. Learn as much as you can  : ) The training they receive is excellent,  and just know your son is now a "MAN"

  • DramaSoul

Thanks, mikes mom.  This just hit me harder now that he is at Camp P and I watched the video of their training.

  • mikes mom

Know that we are there for you.  I don't know what I would have done the 7 months he was in the sandbox if I hadn't had N4Ms... That was 2 years ago and now my son is doing great.... But ignorance is not always bliss  if you question anything look it up.. Watch the news

  • DramaSoul

You are so right about ignorance.  I do my best to keep myself informed.  Thanks again.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

So much to learn!  That's why NavyforMoms is so great. Someone somewhere knows the answer or where to find it.  If you go here and scroll to the bottom, there are some really good resources to take a look at.

  • DramaSoul

    Thanks Marcy and mikes mom!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Hi Craig, thanks sure did!  I only got home an hour ago, 108 degrees out and so I fell straight into the pool.

  • mikes mom

DramaSoul anytime .. We have been there and understand your feelings oh so well

  • DramaSoul

It's just all so new and foreign.  So I am all for reading and getting any and as much information as I can.

  • mikes mom

That's how I felt too DramaSoul when my son was going through his training and then when my daughter went through hers

  • Craig

    Marcy - 108 degrees wow....

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Craig where do you live that it is so hot so early (7am central here now ). We hit 110 last night around 7pm
  • Craig

I actually live in Colorado.  We get up to 92 degrees, which is really hot for Colorado.  All of our grass in our yards are totally burned out.

I actually worked with CTR3(IDW) John Larimer, the sailor that was killed in the Aurora Colorado shooting.  Our building is still getting it's head together on this senseless shooting.  It's really sad to walk by his desk each day.  The Navy is still deciding if they want to keep his desk as a memorial, or, to remove it.  I have suggested that they keep it just like the POW/MIA table in every Navy chow hall.

If you guys want to read a great write up about John, go to the very end of this publication (page 51) and read up.

May you Rest in Peace shipmate....

  • Glo Mom of Future Officer

He Craig just a question about Corpsman school -  my son Danny finally had his Induction Ceremony for Cardinal Company in St. Louis and left for bc from the Cardinal baseball game.  My question is, once Danny completes bc and leaves for SA, will he get to have his car?  Just curious.

  • Craig

Mom Proud - I'm kind of in a different situation than all of you parent.  My daughter is a HM in the Air Force at San Antonio.  Since I'm 100% Navy, I'm actually trying to figure out the differences between the Air Force and the Navy for the training at Fort Sam.

I know in the Air Force stands no duty at Fort Sam.

I know you can have your car too.  The only place I've found that a sailor can't have their car (after Phase 3) is Great Lakes.  One of the other members will be able to answer you....

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Re having a car - go to this page New Personnel FAQs and scroll down to "Can I bring a vehicle?" for the info.

  • lizinnj

I am driving my daughters car to her when she graduates from A school in SA. I wish I had taken it down right away. What she has spent in cab fare is disgusting! She said she probably won't have to pay for gas because everyone loves those with cars..fill the tank, fill the tank on a friday night! :)
