Sailors becoming Hospital Corpsmen at A School in San Antonio, TX - best rating in the Navy! The Hospital Corps is the Navy's only enlisted Corps and the most decorated in the Navy. Families, friends and loved ones, join in!
While the storm clouds of war are seen brewing in the horizon of history, these shipmates have stood the watch. These sailors stood the watch so that we, our families, and our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety, each and every night, knowing that a sailor stood the watch.
Today we are here to say:
"Shipmates...the watch stands relieved.
Relieved by those you have serve with, and have trained with.
Shipmate you stand releived....we have the watch!"
"Boatswain...Standby to pipe the side...Shipmates's going Ashore!"
God bless these sailors and their families. May they rest in peace.
Craig...I am interested in the difference in what the AF medics can do vs the Navy Corpsman. Is your daughter in C school for surgical assisting? I always thought if I had been a nurse I would have been a surgical nurse!
Drama - She's actually in the field now and said she had a great week. She assisted in delivering 5 babies and said it was so much fun. She said that she probably wouldn't want to work their full time because all the gals that do end up pregnant themselves because they want babies too.
Her sadness came when she had to assist in "pencil sharpening" a baby boy, meaning circumcision. She said she couldn't handle that too well. I totally hear her, I too could not do anything that seems like it would hurt a child. Even though I believe in doing it.
I know I couldn't do an IV on a baby either. I know in my heart the doctor would only issue an IV if it was necessary, but I truly don't think I could actually poke a baby. Anyone older (about 6) I could easily do it, but not to a baby. I guess that's why we have people doing medical stuff.
Craig...yeah when it comes to anything on my kids when they were babies it was pretty tough.I remember calling my mom after I took my daughter for her first vaccinations. I was crying. I am glad your daughter is doing so well!
See, that is another thing I couldn't do is shots. I just couldn't. Even though I know it great for their health.
When I was in Scotland, they allowed me to be in the room watching the C-section on my wife. I had no problem with that. It was just like a movie to me. It didn't seem like I even in the room. I thought there would be a lot more blood than there was. I doctors kept asking if I was ok, I told them it was actually really cool. So it's not the blood and guts thing that gets to me, it's the youngness.
My mom was a nurse in a County Hospital, before all the neonate units. They would call her in to do the IVs and shots on the tiny babies, because she was so good at it, and she'd go because she could not stand the thought of someone who couldn't hit those veins trying to do it and miss. My son always listened to those stories, and when he was in training, he was really good at hitting those veins. He told people he had his grandmother's "touch". He called me a couple of times during FMTB..."I hit 3 IVs on a helicopter today"...but the one that I'll never forget was when they drove to Virginia during FMTB, and it was hot, those Marines were carrying full loads..."Mom! Fourteen Marines went down in the heat and they brought them to us all at once,! I went down the row and hit 8 Marines in a row!...it was so cool, we had one guy that arrested!"...when I pointed out that possibly that Marine's mom might not think that his arresting was "cool"..."we brought him back, mom, he's fine...and he'll never go to Iraq." Glad he had that attitude, I'm pretty good as long as it's not my own kids bleeding...
TDM....I am just thinking of your son finding it so cool!! I am fine doing stuff in the mouth. I do anesthesia in the mouth all the time. My patients always tell me they never feel it but I am not so sure I could do the IV thing.
Craig...yeah there is something about a baby. My son was jaundiced after he was born and they had to do a blood test. Here was this little baby...all 6 lbs 10 oz of him. My daughter, who was 5 1/2 at the time, was watching all of this. The guy(nurse) who was doing the blood test was soooo great. He talked to my daughter and me and he soothed my son who didn't even whimper with the blood draw. TDM...that must be the kind of touch your mom and your son have.
I checked the Facebook page where I asked before, and others are asking about A School grads as well. I asked for any information about where these grad dates might be posted online. We'll see. Maybe they'll get the hint and give them a page for info like that on facebook. There was one question answered after the answer for Class 200 .
" Navy Class 225 will graduate on 6 Dec 2012 at 11 a.m. in the Anderson Hall Auditorium, located on Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX."
Dani and OKsuzieq... so proud of our sailors, those pictures are amazing. Almost as good as being there. Luv and Betty... look at our guys standing side by side! They worked so hard to make the Deans List! :)
My son starts classes on Wednesday. My husband was in San Antonio for a Corpsmen reunion. He was able to bring our son and two shipmates to the dinner Saturday evening. They met their instructors and the Master Chief of the base. Didn't know who they were until the speeches, then all three almost keeled over. :)
Is there any place where these dates are posted online? I'd be happy to share that info with the parents in the A School group on NavyforMoms.com. Thank you!
METCNot yet, but the BMTCP FB page will soon have a link posted with the information
So, stay tuned! I'm sure Marcy will post the link above as soon as she has one!
BMTCP Graduation Schedule is now available! Check out the dates for our soon to be Hospital Corpsman and Air Force Medical Technicians. Graduations are located in Anderson Hall Auditorium on Fort Sam Houston.

OKCSuzie, Alexmom, Luv and Betty Congrats to all of your sailors for making Corpsman. Alexmom, Luv and Betty are any of your sailors staying in SA for C school? Looking for others who may have sailors staying in SA. Those boys sure did work hard to make the Dean's list. My sailor studied in the bathroom so he wouldn't keep his roommate awake at night. :)
So one of our new FSH moms just asked this question and I don't know the answer. Can anyone help out with an answer? Her son will be in SA over the holidays so how does this work?
"My son is headed there on Saturday - graduates Friday from BC. So of course my question is do they get to come home (Toledo, OH) at any point during there 16 weeks of A school? Im planning to go on a road trip there as well but didnt know if he gets to come home?"
Hey folks...so I have not been on here since my daughter started A school in June...and Now I need a hotel for last minute trip to SA this Friday for graduation next tues...any help would be appreciated...I know there was a list of good riverwalk hotels and car rentals,,but am at work and dont have at lot of time...got my flight booked (at the last min from SFO)...so now need hotel and car rental for this weekend...help? thanks,
alexcmom : My son said he was eligible to come home over Columbus Day weekend if he so chose to. I guess it all depends on how quick they phase up. Maybe a veteran Mom or Dad can take a stab at this
What is the schedule for A school? Specifically, is the first half EMT, second half nursing, etc? Too, how many of the chapters of the EMT book do they cover? Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks TXBaby. I have a few additional questions, I hope you don't mind. The 7 tests, those are just the EMT; correct? Do you recall what the 5th test might have been? Did your son feel that the EMT portion was more difficult than the nursing segment of the school? Also, what is the teaching/delivery method? It seems with the limited time and the massive amount of information that they are expecting the student's to process, there would be little time for engaging the student in active learning. It sounds like it is all lecture then test.
Mrs...my son graduated earlier this Summer and he said the EMT portion was the hardest. There was one test that covered several chapters with only 50 questions.
Does anyone know when the Christmas vacation will be for Fort Sam C school members? How early can you put in the out of bounds travel chit for long distances & get it approved? Does this count against your vacation time?
Leave vs Liberty On this link, antim explains in detail the difference between Leave and Liberty....and how holidays affect it. It might have changed some, but this is basically what my son followed until he left in Feb, so probably not that much.
Dani/Jenn - Per the out of bounds chit. You need to make sure that your sailors doesn't have duty, if they do, then they need to swap duty with another sailor. Once they get their duty swapped, then they can put in an "Out-of-Bounds" chit. They can then be "legal" to go outside the area limit (I think it's 250 miles). They still need to make sure they're back in time for school.
Make sure they don't take the last flight of the last day. If there is a mechanical problem with the plane, and if they should cancel the flight, then they are still responsible to be back on time, or they could be written up. The out of area only allows you to depart the area, but not to extend your liberty.
Hello, my sailor had PIR yesterday and is currently at Atlanta waiting for connecting flight. He is to land in Texas at 7 pm . Can anyone give me and idea what is gonna happen once he arrives. There are 15 corpsman to arrive there?
We met my son at the airport in chicago and gave him his cell phone and laptop we are hearing two different things we are hearing that they will have there cells and computers away until they earn them but that he is told he gets to keep them until or if he gets into trouble which is true?
Navymassmom - The rooms are actually nice. The internet is terrible. He probably will need a Verizon hot spot to get the internet. I have pictures of inside the rooms, and I thought I posted it here, but can't find it right now. Let me do some digging.
Unlike Pensacola, where you can have the same sex parent come into your room, at Fort Sam, you can't.
