Navymommass my son texted me that he arrived this am at 1:00am in San Antonio. He had his PIR Friday SHip 13, DIV 309. Going to Corpman A school.

  • Navymassmomship13div313

My son advised me today that classes do not start until October ,9th. My son was ship 13 Div 313. He said what he understands they will be just cleaning.
  • Navymassmomship13div313

Where is he going for A school? When did your sailor do PIR?
  • Glo Mom of Future Officer

Hi mysailorsgirl - is he graduating this coming Friday?  If so, my son too is graduating this coming Friday.  Will he be able to keep his electronics since they are holding him there until the 14th?  I'm sorry to be asking you all these questions, but my SR does not write many letters and never answers my questions.  I'm just waiting to be able to talk to him once BS is over.

  • CHN-B

There was "rumored" a week before my SN's PIR that he would be delayed a week as well. But as it turned out, he did not START classes until a week later. But he still left GL the Sat following his PIR. Which was good because it allowed him a week to get his school supplies & get situated on base before focusing on his studies. Fort Sam is a large base & he was finding out where everything was, getting to know his room mate & getting settled.
  • CHN-B

When I heard about the possible delay in leaving GL, I called the public affairs office at RTC & asked if they r allowed to take their cell phones & laptops to their new holding units. The rep said no they cannot.
But I was worried for nothing because when I was able to talk to my sailor after battle stations, he told me he was flying out the day after PIR. :)
  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Ok my son PIRed 4/24/12 and this is what happened. If you can meet them at the airport you can give them their cell phone and lap top. My son left the next day after PIR. We were not able to meet him at the airport so we mailed him what he asked for. ( It was the one and only time we paid extra to over night it. Don't recommend this as there is no guarantee they will get it next day. It might get to the base the next day but they might not be able to get it right away) They will clean, do PT and other jobs around the base. There are 3 phases which they move through pretty quickly. I posted a picture of the room earlier. Cabs are $5.00 around the base and more off base. Food is not the best but they eat some meals there and keep some in their room. My son waited 4 weeks before starting A School. The first half of A School is EMT, it's hard and fast paced. The second half is nursing and a little easier. If you have any other questions just ask. It is not always the same for each sailor/corpsman, but this should give you an idea. I also heard the wait time to start school is getting better and may be as little as 2 weeks.

  • Glo Mom of Future Officer

Thanks mysailorsgirl and CHN-B -  It would work out better if they did leave on Saturday, that way I can make sure he gets his electronics.  Thanks for asking this question to your Sailor. Mine is still a SR.  If it's ok mysailorsgirl, I sent you a friend request, so that you could send me a private message about the answers.  Thank you both again.  MPOD

  • Navymassmomship13div313

My son just did PIR 9/28 he was sent to airport and arrived with all other corpsman . They didn't get on planes until 11:30am on Saturday. There were 10 in his group. He told me they won't begin classes until October 9th
  • DramaSoul

Craig...I seem to recall a story about that. Did you tell that story? I had this conversation with my son just yesterday.  I wanted to leave to get him to his duty station (since I would be driving him) earlier rather than later.

  • DramaSoul

Thanks TDM for posting the Leave Liberty link. Learned somethin' new!

  • cyndyj

I'm hoping that someone who has been to San Antonio can recommend a hotel.   We'll be staying  9 days in the area, I'm looking for a decent one with a kitchen,I may have found something but before making the final arrangements I thought I'd check and get some feedback from someone who may have had good luck previously. We'll be there the 2nd week of Oct. Thanks

  • MomtoSix

Need shipping advice! :)     My son wants about 35lbs of 'stuff' sent to him from TN. I know you gals HAVE to know the cheapest way to do this! Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

  • Jenn(RJs Mom) Ship 09 Div 273

@ MomtoSix - the cheapest rate would be the flat rate boxes - I rolled up 10 t-shirts and two pairs of shorts and managed to fit 3 books in the large flat rate box - cost was 15.95

@cyndyj I asked my son for hotel recommendations and he said as long as you stay on the riverwalk you cant go wrong ( we have yet to make it there )

  • DramaSoul

I am here to tell you that you can put A LOT in a large flat rate box! Ask anyone who has packed boxes for Molly's Adopt a Sailor.

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Witness number 2. I can vouch for that too lol
  • briana&isaiah forever

    Hello Ladies,

Im new to this group, my boyfriend just had PIR on 9/21/12, so he's only recently arrived in San Antonio A School. He's still waiting to begin classes, and we talk everyday. Im just wondering what communication is like once they get busy with their classes...is it much less frequent?

  • DramaSoul

brian&isaiah...the only restriction is the amount of time he will need to study.  The first 5 weeks are the hardest so while your bf will have the access (cell phone, etc), he may not have the time.  Also, they cannot walk around in their uniforms and talk on the cell phone. Actually, they can't walk and talk on the cell phone.  My son was in civvies going to BBQ on base and he was stopped by an Army NCO because he was talking to me on the phone and didn't know the rule applied to wearing civvies as well as uniforms.

  • DramaSoul

    Sorry...that's briana&isaiah...sticky keys.

  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

Briana- I am able to talk to my husband everyday:) he usually calls me when he gets back to his room after class each day around 530pm Texas time. We usually Skype on the weekends and text throughout the day (I text him random things and he gets them when he gets out of class, since they can't have their phones). Even if your SO says he can have his phone during the day, tell him not too. My husbands whole class got in trouble because of one student.

The amount of communication will also depend on your boyfriend. How much time he needs to study, if he has to stay after class for study hall he won't be able
To talk til later in the evening. You also have to take into consideration duty days and field day on thursdays. And how much time he will want to hang out with his classmates.

My advice would be to not get upset with him for not calling at a certain time.... because most of tthe time they have no control of that:)
  • Craig

MomtoSix - The cheapest way to ship items is to go the the Personal Property office. They will arraign to ship the items for free. \
    http://www.military.com/base-guide/fort-sam-houston/contact/joint-p...

Normally, when a sailor has a lot of items they will send a mover to his room. However, since he has just a small amount, they will usually tell them to bring their stuff to the PPO and they will pack it and send it by US Mail. It's the cheapest/most cost effective way for the US Government.
  • DramaSoul

    Thanks, Craig...learned something new!!

  • briana&isaiah forever

Thanks for the advice on that ladies! :) I definitely want hin to do very good and be focused in school, even if that means not talking to him as much as I'd like. Im so excited and proud of him. And hey, anything is better than bootcamp snail mail! lol :)

  • CHN-B

Briana- I totally agree..this is better than boot camp. My bf is at SA right now. He texts me 1 brief "good morning" everyday (4am my time!) & I do the same as he leaves for physical or class. Then we text a bit after his class before dinner (about 15-20 mins). But after dinner, he studies until late at night before bedtime. Then we text a quick "good night". We talk for about 30 mins on the weekends & text a little more frequent but not when it's his study time. Plus he has other responsibilities he needs to follow through in there.
This time is very important for him & for our future. We've sacrificed for him to be away from home to develop his career. Plus, we've gone through boot camp so a little longer of this is nothing. I just want my bf to focus on his studies & to do the best he can. I figured we have the rest of our lives to talk. :)
  • briana&isaiah forever

Yeah, its definitely better than bootcamp, and Im willing to sacrifice a little talking time if it means he will do well and be successful. Im so proud of him! I remember I was texting him this weekend and I was feeling really bummed cause I missed him so much. Just a bad day, and I was telling him how much I just wanted him to come home. And he told me that he feels the same way a lot, but that he'd rather hurt now for happiness forever...and those words just have been stuck in my head since. Being so far apart isnt easy, but I know we have an amazing life ahead of us...I cant wait! :)

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Awesome attitudes!  A school will be over before you know it and the next great chapter begins. :)

  • briana&isaiah forever

Yes indeed! The best is yet to come for all of our Sailors! :)

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Txbabydocmom - you're right, so far the Navy's not offering valet service to grads lol  Sailors will have to mail their stuff home and/or carry it with them after graduation, so don't send too much stuff to A school to add to what they're buying already ;)

@momtosix, as the others said, priority-mail large boxes are great, up to 70 lbs for a flat rate.  And eventually when mailing to an FPO address, the rate drops to $13.45.  Once I even used a small vacuum-bag spacesaver thing and crammed in so much (it was sheets and towels to the sandbox).

When and if you end up sending to an FPO address, keep this USPS # - 800-610-8734, say "Order supplies" and then ask for the Military Pack.  They'll send you six priority-mail large boxes for military, tape, and labels, all for free.  You can order cases of 10 and 25 online sent for free, too; choose size under "select format" at right on that page.  May seem premature but it'll be here soon!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

From Navy.mil Oct 2, this video/news story "Navy Hospital Corpsmen Help Care for Marines in Afghanistan" http://www.navy.mil/viewVideo.asp?id=17637

So much to be proud of!!!

  • TexasDocMom

Congrats, Jacque...but I bet he changes his mind about using his leave at Christmas. He'll be ready to come home for those 2 weeks by then.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

:-)  And if not, there will be an entire community on the base who will NOT let your son be alone, believe me.  Plus, there's a wonderful group on N4M called Sailor Rescue List where moms offer to share their holiday table with sailors away from home, and where moms look to find someone in their sailors' area.

  • TexasDocMom

Yep, he can always come to Austin...if we end up having Christmas here. If we have it at my son's home in San Antonio, I'm betting he'll get in the door there as well...

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Can I come? :)  My corpsman spent his first Thanksgiving away with a Navy family via the group I mentioned, and had a great time!  I have to admit I was surprised when he took me up on the option when I presented it, he took it in stride - and took flowers too LOL.  They all had dinner, watched football, it sounded so nice!

  • TexasDocMom

My son wouldn't go to anyone's home for Thanksgiving. But we were very blessed that he was home for every Christmas for the 8 years he was in the Navy. Timing was everything...Don't really know what is happening on the holidays right now here. The "other family" has a young Army medic in training right now in San Antonio, who will be assigned over seas (Korea, I think?) so that family gets the choice on both Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm not stealing their daughter away when that mom can have all her children at home for those holidays this year.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

You're right, we learn to be flexible and it all works out somehow.  Jacque, here's that group - come join!  http://www.navyformoms.com/group/sailorrescuelist  We did a 'virtual baby shower' a few months back for a gal whose hubby was in Afghanistan, for example - you never know what's in store :)

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

ps that invite for Thanksgiving is from TDM, but you can come to my house too!!  See you in the other group, I just posted a new pic of our Navy baby :)

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Hey all just an FYI. none that I have an empty nest, my door is always open ( it always was just have more room now) so if you or your family ever find yourselves in NJ and need a place to stay, we are better then Motel 6 l
  • keoquilts-corpsman mom

just returned from A school graduation.  TDM, I thought it was you I was meeting in the parking lot by the barracks...as I stupidly asked "Are you TexasdocMom on Navy4moms?  She said no!! lol.  Not sure why I thought it might be u...so all the construction across from Anderson Hall...very exciting.  I could not believe you could drive right up to the barrack parking lot.

The graduation was very informal, but very moving, not like Bootcamp though.  I stayed at the Crockett hotel and liked it.  It is older and didnt have a frig, and found out I could have had one for $25 one time fee.  No shuttle to this hotel and no parking lot.  Which was ok, I did get a cab a few times....which was ok...I talked to the cabbie about the complaints of high cab fees.  He said it was known throughout the cabbies and mostly the new cabbies that are not from SA. (My daughter has never experience this) all in all, I would recommend the

trip and looking forward to bringing hubby to the C school...as I got it down now!! lol...

  • daubersmom

Hi all, my sailor arrived on 9/15, started classes this week. His birthday is coming up, and I am wanting to do something for him.. does anyone know if they can receive "deliveries" at school? Im thinking about sending an edible arrangment or trying to find a local bakery in SanAntonio to deliver some cupcakes..any advise is appreciated..

  • Huggy

Hello all I get to join this wonderful group now. My sailor has pir 10/5 and will be coming down your way. Excited for all the fun adventures to begin.

  • Becca's Mom

Hello Daubersmom.  My daughter arrived on the 15th also.  Yes, they can get packages.  I have already sent some of my daughters personal belongings from home.  It took about a week to get there and you need to make sure they know it is coming, so that they can check on it.  Mail and packages are not delivered directly to them.  And any packages must be opened on the quarter deck.  Not sure about edible though.  Hope this helps.

  • DeuceDogMom

Good morning! I know I'm on here a little early, my SR will PIR 10/2 and will go to SA for A school. I was wondering, do we address our letters in the same manner as we do when they are in Boot Camp?  All capital BLOCK letters? Just sitting here wondering! lol

  • Craig

slyancey - You really don't need to do the block letters.  As long as the address is readable, then they will get the letter.  It does make it easier if it is.

  • Craig

For those that are military dependents,  active duty, or retired.

I would recommend you stay at the Randolph Inn located on Randolph AFB about 10 miles up the road from Fort Sam.  They are really nice rooms and only cost $39 total (ie military doesn't pay tax).

This would be a great place to stay for those married dependants.  While your sailor is in school, you have a lot of stuff that you can do on base.  The rooms are nice, and the best thing of all, it's safe (you have guys/gals with M-16's guarding the gates).

I've stay at all three of these hotels (below), and the Randolph is really nice.

Sadly, if you don't have an ID card, your sailor must be with you at all times.  (ie so it only makes it good for dependants, active, or retired).

  • DeuceDogMom

Thanks Craig. I will get some address labels printed up since she will be there awhile :)

  • Glo Mom of Future Officer

Good Afternoon!  My son arrived at school today and we did not follow him to the airport to give him his cell phone.  If I have it Fedx or UPS overnight, how soon will he get the phone and other items that we want to send to him?

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Mom Proud of Danny, I overnighted my sons stuff and paid alot to do it. It did get to the base the next day but he did not get it until like a week later. I had seen on this site it is not worth over nighting and they were right. But it made me feel better knowing it was there when he had the chance to go get it. He wanted it right away because he wanted his phone and lap top. I don't remember why he didn't get it, but it was there when he did.

  • Glo Mom of Future Officer

Thanks Katze90210.  I just want to insure it to make sure if it gets lost that we get the insurance money for it.

  • Glo Mom of Future Officer

Thank you Jacque, I'm glad to finally to officially be a part of this group.  I joined it when my son was in DEPs.  I'm sure I will be coming here and asking all kinds of questions.  What is funny is that I was talking to my son about N4Ms and he says that our sailors laugh about it, well I want to laugh at them, because of this site, it has made my life a lot easier.  I'm going to see about sending it UPS overnight and I will let my son know via the computer.  Again, all of you thank you so much for your help on this matter and welcoming me to the A school group.

  • DramaSoul

Glo Mom....yeah, they can laugh at us all they want.  My son is at his duty station and still laughs at his mom being on N4M's site...checking in.  Darn straight...it has saved what little mind I have left!!! I found FedEx overnight worked well but I haven't compared the prices. It's true that if you let them know there is something waiting for them, they know to pick it up.  I overnighted some food for Passover this last Spring and he got it the next day.  I did text him that it was on it's way. The only time I had any problem was after he went to FMTB.  The Fox River Mills Sox I sent him got there within 2 days but he didn't get them because the Post Office PO never picked them up until 4 weeks after they arrived!!! He eventually had them for the last couple of weeks of training.
