Can I send care packages to my sailor in a school ?
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Stephanie - yes you can.  Just keep in mind that at the end of A school they have to ship home or carry with them their stuff  to their next location :)

The BMTCP Graduation Schedule for dates 16JAN2013 through 28FEB2013 has been updated with some changes - BMTCP%20Graduation%20Schedule%2016JAN13%20-%2028FEB13.pdf

Which reminds me of a saying you and your corpsman will come to know and love  :)

  • DramaSoul

Marcy...ain't that the truth!! Also I am here to say I agree about being careful what you send. The amount of 'stuff' we had to bring home after A school was unbelievable! My son learned the hard way that traveling light is the best way! It can be spendy to ship it back home or carry it on. Southwest took pity on him traveling home and did not charge him for the extra.

Hello everybody!  I have a question:  If I meet my Recruit at O'Hare prior to his departure to San Antonio and give him a backpack with his cell phone, alarm clock and a few clothing items, is he allowed to bring that with him to Fort Sam Houston?  What items are specifically NOT recommended to send with them?

  • PatsFan923 HM Mom

@Cprmom - thank you for the information.  I understand that they can fly out of either airport and that they do take them from RTC between 2 and 3 AM to the airport(s).  His A School doesn't start until 3/1 and he will be heading there on 2/2!  I will be very sad if I cannot see him at the airport prior to his departure to TX.  I will need to, just in case, give him his watch while he is on liberty with us on 2/1 and hope it does not get stolen during his remaining time at RTC and at A School.

  • Trish from Texas

PatsFan - he can take it with him, no problem.  I hope you get to see him!  We won't get a chance to see our son off at the airport, but we live in Houston, so we can drive down to San Antonio on the weekends for visits.  Supposedly, the food is pretty awful at Fort Sam Houston, so we stocked a canvas shoe organizer with non-perishable food items for late-night study sessions.  It can hang in there closet, so it doesn't take up much space.  Good luck to you!

  • PatsFan923 HM Mom

Thank you so much for the information!  I knew that he couldn't have his phone with him after liberty I need to see if I can get it to him at the airport.  Say happy thoughts that he leaves out of O'Hare!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Would like to do a casual survey of current and past A schoolers, so if you have a chance to ask yours -

How important is it to have one's cellphone during the first few days?  (Important vs convenient).

How far into school is the wristwatch needed?  I wouldn't send an expensive or special one btw :)

How do they access flashcards?  I've seen the HM Manual ones on NKO (Navy Knowledge Online) - is that what they're using, or making their own?

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

ps ... and anything else your sailor thinks is important to have - or not - that would be interesting to hear!

  • Trish from Texas

great questions!  I would like to hear those answers, too.  The only one I know the answer to is the watch.  You need that the first week.

  • Maltobella (HM - San Antonio)

My son is graduating A school next Thursday. He was able to take his phone with him to A school. Well he didn't but some kids took it on the plane with them right about basic. As far as the wristwatch, I'm going to bring one to him when I go next week. I'm asking him now when he would have wanted it.
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

The phone is very important to them but it was more important to me. After boot it was nice to be able to text him or call him. Especially before his classes started

    :)
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

What I really meant was, do our sailors feel it's so critical to have it on the trip from boot to A school  or could they wait a few days for the mail :)

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Also - it would be interesting to hear what the most appreciated and enjoyed things in care packages are!

  • DramaSoul

I agree with 1windhaven. My son wanted to be able to communicate with his family (read 'girlfriend'!) After 8 weeks of no contact and having to wait 4 weeks to class up, it was important for his psyche and mine! He got a watch when he was on liberty. It was critical that he not take them back to RTC so we gave it to him at O'Hare. We spent 12 hours with him at the airport. He did not take his laptop. I mailed that to him. As to flash cards, I gave him A&P flash cards for PIR. He used them, especially for nursing fundamentals.
  • DramaSoul

Marcy, I think my son's favorite care package was the one I overnighted with traditional and favorite foods for Passover! It really brought 'home' to him. :-)
  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Marcy. Lol they are kids who went from being totally connected to the world to being totally disconnected. My sailor said that they should be haded the phones as they end the graduation! Lol but really as he looks back he figures he waited this long, what's another day or two
  • Jenn(RJs Mom) Ship 09 Div 273

    @ Marcy -

    1. Cellphone: it is as important as you make it... If you want to FINALLY be able to communicate with your sailor then you will want to get him his cell phone - trust me your son will know what he can and cannot take have etc. His DI's will give him/her the ins and outs

    2. Wristwatch - definitely a necessity the first week of class. However - they dont class up right away so its not a rush

    3. They can access flashcards on the BMTCP facebook site

    Hospital Corpsman Mobile Flashcards
    http://movablemedia.net/NMPDC/HMFlashcards/mobileTOC.html

They will use study groups and class notes more than anything -

  • Trish from Texas

I keep going back and forth on bringing the cell phone to our son.  As Katze said, they went from totally being connected before Boot, to be totally disconnected during Boot.  I want him to have it to call home, but hubby thinks it would be best to take it to him after the first 4 weeks of classes (which is said to be the most difficult part and determines the 'pick order' for billets).

One of the instructors at "A" school said that the biggest reason for low grades is the lack of studying because the students are focusing on social media and texting and stuff.  Is there another way for them to call home, like a phone bank or something?

Thanks to all the moms sharing information!  You all are awesome!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Guess I wasn't clear.  My question was, how important, as in necessary, is it to the sailor (not others) for the first few days between boot and A school.  Of course everyone wants to be in touch.  There seems to be much stress over getting the phone to the sailor at the airport in Chicago.  Clearly a lot of sailors don't have family at PIR and somehow they manage to get to A school and end up with a phone etc so I think I know the answer anyway :)

As far as use during A school, ultimately it's up to the sailor (not kids anymore!).  Just to be clear, my corpsman's been through boot camp, schools, Field Med and deployments, so I know a bit about separation and communication.  Certainly it wasn't my intention to imply that everyone ought not be in touch asap if they like.

Also - mine bought his own watch at the NEX (this was Great Lakes) - I'm assuming the same would be available at Ft. Sam.

  • DramaSoul

Mine bought his at NEX in GL.  Good points about not being connected the first 4 weeks.  I will ask my son about that!

  • ProudUSNCorpsmanMom

My son went to A in October 20th with no cellphone until his line ready to be upgraded in Nov 22 but he bought a prepaid after a week for him and me as well to call... I gave him a divers watch after PIR... and he asked me to send snacks for him during study time... Beef jerky. Slimjim LOL and some pistachios. Not sure if he used flashcards but when he went home during the holidays he brought home a 2 inches thick book to study.
  • CHN-B

I brought my sailor his cell phone at the airport after BC. Since it was a smart phone, he used it to study the flash cards online & look up other info for his studies. But they have a computer lab in their barracks that they can log onto as well. It was also a means for his class leader to text him (& others) updates ea day. Such as what time to muster in the morning etc.
I'm not aware that the cell phone was a big hindrance of their studies. I do know that playing video games is a big occupier of time. & watching movies on their laptops. My sailor had mentioned, "these kids play video games from morning to night"! (He's in his 30s so he seems ancient to them). Another big distraction is hanging out with their buddies at the mall & at Hooters.
  • hansumsgirl93

hi, CHN-B...good question! my girl (class #040) finished EMT last friday & tells me that they will do that part next week, though hasn't been given an exact day yet.

  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

My husbands class picked orders about 2 weeks after EMT. The class ahead of them was only a week ahead of them in training and picked right after EMT was finished. And the class after my husbands got their orders the day after my husbans got his. So it really just depends on the Navy. He did receive his orders set the end of the fiscal year, so that might have been a factor.
  • Trish from Texas

Hi hansumsgirl/Britt - our son just got to Fort Sam...any tips on what he should be concentrating on studying before classes start?  What was the most difficult part of the EMT portion for them?  Thanks in advance!

  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

Honestly, my husband didn't study anything before classes started. He was in holding for about a month from the time he got there. They keep them very busy during the day... marching, paperwork, and duty. My husband enjoyed his free time. He hung out with his classmates and settled in to his new freedom from bootcamp life. They will have plenty of time to study once they start class.

For some people learning is a snap, for others it's harder, and A school compresses a LOT into a short time.  I've said this here before, I recommend the book EMT-Basic Review by Kaplan that is available at Amazon for about $11.  It gives a very good overview of anatomy and physiology (including anatomical planes, and the skeletal, respiratory, circulatory, gastrointestinal, nervous, endocrine systems), the ABC's (airway, breathing, circulation), and more.  Each section has quizzes which help one get into the mindset of reading, note taking and being tested on your knowledge before school starts.  Obviously some chapters won't apply, such as ambulance operations.  But for the reasons I gave, I think it gives a student a good head start, especially if they've never studied EMT information before.

Thank you so much Marcy!  I passed on the information and my son just ordered it online.  He's been studying the flashcards, but he wanted something with sample quizzes included.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Just added a video up top that I think you all will like ;)

  • Trish from Texas

    That is awesome Marcy!  Thanks!

    HI there,

Here we go- next chapter has started... our son is in A school San Antonio and focused on FMF or SAR Corpsman.  We are focused on cheering him on. :)

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

For Navy Wife and Proud, you were asking in a Discussion about PMT (Preventive Medicine Technician - here's a video of "Navy Preventive Medicine Technicians serving as health inspectors during replenishment-at-sea, which is just one of the many functions of a PMT."  More info: http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/nmcphc/Pages/Home.aspx

  • Nana

Is USPS the only form of packages we can send to A school for our sailors ?

  • ProudUSNCorpsmanMom

Hi everyone. .  any hotel suggestions to stay near the base?   I want to stay close by, I googled the address from the hotel but address is unknown which I understand why.  Thank you for your suggestions.

  • DramaSoul

I really liked FedEx. I had to overnight some food items and he got it the next day.
  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

Most of the hotels near the base are the lower end ones. Like Red Roof inn, americas best value, etc (I stayed in them because it was just me and they werent too bad). If you want something nicer... I would suggest staying in downtown san antonio near or on the riverwalk. It is a 10 minute drive to base from most of the hotels down there. If you want more of a resort type hotel, there are nice ones out towards sea world/la cantera area. But that is about 30 minutes to/from the base. Just be prepared to pay around $20/ day for parking if you stay downtown/riverwalk. If you are coming soon... the Stock show and Rodeo is going on now thru the end of the month. So more traffic, more expensive hotels... but on the brihht side there is more to do!
  • Trish from Texas

We stayed at carlson suites and it is really nice. Indoor pool, large two bedroom suite with king beds, free parking and only about 20 minutes from base. Really pretty and super comfy beds.
  • Trish from Texas

Carlson suites is near the the airport area. More of a resort type hotel but very affordable for the space.
  • ProudUSNCorpsmanMom

I really appreciate the recoms.. Close to the base and affordable as well is what I am looking for.. I was looking at those hotels earlier but could not really chose since I can't determined the distance. Thank you again.
  • CHN-B

I have only stayed at the Powless Guest House on base for each of my visits so I do not know about the others. To determine approx distance you can google map & do a "distance" look up btwn ea hotel address & Fort Sam. You will be entering through the Walters St entrance of the base. There are a lot of motels along the perimeter of the base right near the entrance gate.
  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

There are at least 4 entrances to Ft. Sam that I know of. Walters, Binz Engleman rd, Harry Wurzbach and the Cemetary entrance. There are more, I'm just not sure where they are. All the ones I listed you can easily find the Navy barracks from.
  • Dm (Ship 03 Division 075)

Hello everyone, my son just arrived to SA this past weekend. His PIR was 1/25/13, I believe he will start school next week. We will be visiting him this coming weekend, my question is once he starts school will he loose his liberty on weekends?? Thanks
  • ProudUSNCorpsmanMom

I really appreciate all the info... I will check all these and see which one is the most convenient for us. Thank you all!
