Marcy...you are rockin' it!  Thanks for the info on Okinawa.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Trish, he say's the food's ok and that there are good places a stone's throw from the base, so all is well, your son can sleep better tonight knowing that LOL  Funny when it comes to food, some love the food at SA, others not so much, just subjective.

You're welcome, She'sLove!  I'll check out the dates and post the update above.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Hey Trish, show your son this :)  http://okinawahai.com/to-eat-index/

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

One more thing, i was just told that "But on the base's defense, what you see on the menu will come out looking very similar, the locals take pride in their work.  And they can take a cab everywhere and bike everywhere, but there are tons of hills…"

OK I'm done with Okinawa for now!  You are surely welcome, and oh I almost forgot, Happy Valentine's Day to all of you, too!

  • AzAinge

Is UPS allowed to deliver packages on base?
  • DramaSoul

Check out the Japan Moms on N4M...VERY ACTIVE group of moms! Very helpful.  The Corpsmen in Okinawa group is not as active.

  • Kaiti's mom

She's Love do you have the FB page?

I was trying to figure out what it says for my daughter's grad date. she says June 4th she starts classes tomorrow.

  • She'sLove

Kaiti's mom, it's https://www.facebook.com/pages/Basic-Medical-Technician-Corpsman-Pr.... I found it posted above with the description. I remember your sailor is from 913, right? So is mine :)

  • Echo3

Kati's mom is your dau 095 for HM class? My son is 095 and graduation (according to fb) is 04 June. It looks like all graduations are on Wednesdays.

  • Kaiti's mom

Yes she was 913 and is 095. Thank you all for the info. She has heard that unless you are going to overseas after a school, that you do not get leave. We are trying to plan a wedding for her sister and any info would be great.

  • EmilyD

I'm not sure that that's true. My son Is heading to Great Lakes to work sick call at bootcamp after a school, and he doesn't have to report there for duty until 15 days after graduation. He went in the hole for leave at christmas time, so he won't be able to take leave for that reason. He will most likely be put in holding and do odd jobs in the meantime. I think it would depend on the duty station, or also if she was doing a c school next it would depend when she classed up for that. When she gets settled in, have her talk to her nmti about getting a leave chit for the wedding.

Just posted the new graduation schedule above!

  • Jennifer

My son has been at Fort Sam Houston almost 3 weeks he finally has his laptop with him. Does anyone know how to go about getting internet service in his room? He has asked around and not been able to get it connected......he called tonight very frustrated about everything.

  • EmilyD

It was my understanding that if the kids want wifi in their rooms, they need to subscribe to some sort of a mifi device. My sons Samsung galaxy doubles as a mifi, so he just added more data to his plan so he could use it on his laptop and other devices there.
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Jennifer he should be able to call his phone carrier and they should be able to give him options .
We had sprint and just used the hotspot service they have for internet
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Using their phone is the best option
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I recall that last year, some were using Clear internet service for something like $50/month.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Also regarding internet, here are some previous comments to look through - http://navyformoms.com/group/hmhospitalcorpsmanaschoolinsanantonio/...

Hey - how about a poll for our honored alumni?   It would be great to hear what advice your A School grad would give to someone headed out of boot camp for HM 'A' school in San Antonio.

For inspiration, here are some questions based on recurring ones here ~

Did you need a laptop or a tablet (i.e., an iPad)?  What did you do for internet access?  How are study groups organized?  What's the process like to receive mail, and is it worth it?  How did you get around?  What did you find necessary to buy?

It may take a little time but hopefully we'll get some good info to pass on  :)

  • Emptynester

Great idea Marcy. I've been checking this group fairly regularly...still so many questions.  My son will be there very soon. That information would be extremely helpful!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Thanks Kathy, that's great info! I started a new Discussion above "Advice to new students from 'alumni moms' & their recent A School grads" and I'll copy and paste these into it.

My son graduates April 10 - Class # 055. He does not have his orders...yet and mostly likely will not have a 10 day leave... since he had holiday leave in Dec.

Does anyone know if they have an opportunity to spend time with family after graduation or do they generally leave right away for their next station?

  • Trish from Texas

Right after graduation, they have about 10 minutes to chat and then have to attend about 3 hours of instructions, briefings, etc. After that, they can usually go on liberty. Each person in our son's class had orders. Half left that night, and the others who had FMTB attached to their orders stayed for a few weeks afterward. Hope that helps. :)
  • Trish from Texas

His class knew a week before graduation if they were leaving that same day.
  • EmilyD

Joeys momma, my son graduates mar 10 and he leaves the 12 for his next duty station. We opted to visit 2 weeks ago so we could enjoy the weekend with him since there was some uncertainty about how much free time he would have the weekend of graduation. If that's something you would be interested in doing, and you are flying southwest, you can transfer your tickets without a penalty.
  • carafid1

My son is going to Japan overseas so they gave him leave for 12 days plus he thought they said he could have up to two weeks extra since he won't be home anytime soon after his report date still working it out they have to go thru travel
  • Judy P

Thank you very much for the responses...much appreciated!!

  • clover65

does anyone knows how do I contact the red cross? My husband isn't well and I may need my sailor to come home to see his dad. Please advise. Tks

My daughter graduates April 10th.  She got her orders last evening.  Got her first choice - Guam!  She leaves April 24th.  Hope there is a N4M for Guam, haven't looked yet.  Of course I have a bajillion questions!

  • OKCsuzieq

Squid, yes there is and there is a fb private group that has been awesome. My son will be in Guam for a year in April. ..shocked it had gone by so fast. I do know a female corpsman that I met when my son went to A school who has been a wonderful asset for me...private message me if you would like.
  • louielou

Is it just my computer or did the layout change? Haven't been on here in a few weeks, I don't think I like this set up, too unorganized. :(

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I agree, not a change for the better, too 'vertical.'  Lots of real estate sacrificed to the left and right of the page makes catching up at a glance hard.

  • beachwalker

It's not just this groups site that has been reformatted, but the whole N4M website - time to complain to the webmaster.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

NavyforMoms.com is produced by the Lowe Campbell Ewald advertising agency, and they've been planning this update for some months.  The best way to send feedback about the new version is to the current admin there (Tiffany) at navyformoms@gmail.com.

Hope you all will send in your thoughts about the new look of Navyformoms.com.  I did this morning, and already received a note of appreciation from Tiffany :)

  • DramaSoul

Oh, my, this is soooo hard to navigate!!!  Wow.  Don't have time to mess with it now. Just checkin' in to say hi.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Welcome Karin!  And yes, he'll need a watch with a second hand.

  • Karin417-14/DIV104

    Thanks Marcy! :D
  • EmilyD

Does anyone know the best way to have my sons things that he has acquired at a school to his next duty station which is Chicago? Or possibly home to ny? Thanks!!
  • louielou

Have him get boxes from walmart and ship it UPS, there is a UPS place not to far from their barracks. Or he can send it through the post office. I would have it sent home and then after he gets settled at his new duty station you can send him what he wants and/or needs.

  • Froggy

How does my don get internet access in his room? Is it possible?
  • cupcakegirl14

Hello Froggy ship!  Great to see you here!  :)

  • Filnavymom

Hi cupcakegirl14 and Froggy Ship !! Good to see you in this group !

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Welcome Froggy, cupcake girl and Filnavymom!

Froggy, most seem to use their phone as a hotspot for internet access in their rooms.

  • cupcakegirl14

Hi Filnavymom!  I am loving getting to communicate with my son!  Was texting him last night, classes have not begun yet.

  • Kaiti's mom

Hi everyone, I do not know about you all. But I do love hearing my daughters voice everyday and seeing pictures that she sends me. BC was hard but I know it will all be worth it in the long run. I'm so glad it is over with. She is so looking forward to a career in the Navy. I could not be more proud. Love my Sailor!!!
