Sailors becoming Hospital Corpsmen at A School in San Antonio, TX - best rating in the Navy! The Hospital Corps is the Navy's only enlisted Corps and the most decorated in the Navy. Families, friends and loved ones, join in!
Aweightomyheart, my son was there about 2 years ago. We visited with him a little the first weekend he was there and then saw him again the following weekend. He was limited in what he could do, but st least we saw him.
Hey there. My husband has a PIR of Aug 4, but we are concerned he may not graduate that day because of not passing the swim test. He is supposed to go to San Antonio for HM training. My question is, in the event he is unable to start training with his intended cohort, how long until the next HM training would be offered? I'm trying to get an idea of a timeline. And I understand his contract could change.Would he be able to refuse the new contract if he doesn't like it? Thanks for your help.
Hi again. And with regards to the work load for hosp corpman allow for taking online classes at a college? This is my husband's intention while in training.
My Sailor flew to San Antonio for A School the day after PIR in the wee hours of the morning. At least she hadto be at the airport in the wee hours but then didn't fly out till about 9 am. She received these instructions after battle station/before graduation so basically you will not know until graduation day when you see your Sailor. We were instructed to stay as late as Sunday to be on the safe side if you wanted to see your Sailor off. Warning: you'll now officially be on military time with little to know sleep but loving every moment with your Sailor.
My Sailor arrived at A School this week and has been informed that she will not be home for Thanksgiving even though the facility is shut down and they will be on liberty but will not be granted leave. Her school session however ends early Dec. At that time she will be granted about 10 days of leave and so will be home for a bit leading up to the holiday.

Welcome to being a military mom .... Your daughter will so busy with her classes .... it's not always easy for us especially when holidays happen .... You start getting use to it .... I'm not saying it's easy though ....
New to this group, My son will be graduating BC Aug 25 then headed to Texas. We are giving him a suitcase to bring with him to A-school, with some civilian cloths, laptop etc. Not sure what else he would need, Its so exciting. Proud of them!
In reference to DereksMom
Our son asked for "real towels". So you may want to add some and wash clothes. We later ended up taking some sheets and pillow. I would not suggest sending them now.
@T's mom Thank you, very appreciated. I'm sure once he is settled in, he will have more things he wants us to send. Thanks Again, I'm going to keep those things in mind :)
Just remember DereksMom, they will be carrying all of their clothing from boot camp and uniforms, along with their orders, he probably won't have enough hands for another suitcase, but may be able to squeeze what you brought in, my daughter was able to fit some civilian clothes and her laptop in, but she is a great folder, lol. they usually have their duffle bag - huge on their backs and backpacks on the front and uniform bag in one hand orders in the other, they are pack mules for sure
Pack miles for sure. My son said it was very specific as to what they could carry. I just mailed a box to A school full of clothes. $75.00...lol and the manilla folder had to be in 1 hand. We met him at Airport to give phone and computer. All of them getting off the buses and music playing I think it was Anchors Aweigh? Not sure but it was a sight!
@Lauren-Ship 11 Div 317, @jennifer, Thank you so much!, Great ideas, this helps... so I think when we meet him at airport, he can take the civilian things he wants and fit it into his duffel some where.
I am very thankful for this forum! I have learned so much about boot camp and leads up to PIR. I am ready to overload my brain again for this next chapter! Hooyah!
Welcome newbies to the awesome world of being a corpsman mom! "Mikes mom" and I met here on NAVYformoms several years ago and are a prime example that you can make great and lasting friendships with fellow corpsman moms :) There's a lot to learn and guess what, it never ends lol So PLEASE, ask any and all questions!!
@Counting Fridays Hi There, I think I remember seeing you on the blog on Boot Camp Group, my son just graduated Aug 25 from DIV 259. He just got here Sat. My son said he likes it. They are helpful for any questions he and his roommate had. They have already settled in, we were able to give him his cell before he left the boot camp. :)
Hi Derek's mom! Congrats to your son. I bet our guys know one another. My son got there the 12th. So far so good! Mailed clothes etc. Not sure when he will get them with the weather
Although he said no much going on there. Thank goodness!
@jennifer Thank you, congrats to your son too. You are right I'm sure they have met, it seems they all are pretty close together over there and he too, said not allot happening. I'm glad they got there safe and they are just waiting till class starts. Sounds good to me! :)
Countingfridays: what in the world?! I'm wondering what will happen in the coming days? When my SR got to GL, there were torrential rains then and RTC got flooded. He said he was scooping water with snow shovels! Lol! Can't wait to see him!
so Friday is PIR and if everything stays according to schedule flying out Saturday the 2nd. not sure what time. but he said didn't have to report in till the 10th I believe. So I assume they will be in a holding pattern at the barracks? I am prepacking the boxes to send to him with civvies and electronics. that way all I have to do is label and pay postage. Lesliepartyof6 I will see you at Meet and Greet maybe and hopefully Our kids will become friends.
Ajsmom: I will be doing the same! I can't make the meet and greet:( We have a 14 hour drive ahead of us. We won't get there in time. I hate i have to miss it. I'm hoping all of our guys become great buddies too:) See you soon! HOOYAH!
Jennifer - you mentioned mailing clothes. I haven't asked my Sailor for a mailing address, but he must have one. I'm curious what the mail call process is at A school. Can we only ship via USPS?
Counting Fridays, It took about two weeks before my son got his address. Once he did I was able to send him stuff via UPS no problem. I just have to make sure he knows a package is coming so he will go check for it as he does not go check it everyday. Hope this help.
Counting Fridays...he gave me his address about 3 days after he was there. I used US postal bc FedEx or UPS is 30 miles from my house. They just need to check in for the package. Even with Harvey his box of clothes was only 2 days extra. I couldn't believe it. I sent a package on Sat and he got it yesterday....important things like Lemon heads and Swedish fish...toothbrush to wipe all the gunk off! It feels more like dorm life and lots of studying.it's nice to be able to text and talk. To clarify ...they go and pick up their mail.
Partyofseven, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who has loved being a corpsman (HM) as much as my son. I was blessed however that he was never forward deployed. Mike's mom can attest to the fears that all corpsman moms lived with during the recent past. And I don't know one corpsman who was in war zones and does not suffer from some degree of PTSD.
Rebecka, welcome to the group!
Hey Marcy, wow this is true. I'm hoping he'll be stateside to. Hey Rebecka, my son is at bc right now and he will also be going to A school in San Antonio.
Hi All! I have been reading and not posting. I would guess my son loves being a Corpsman as much as Marcy's son! I am a little nervous myself as his next duty station will be with Marines again although he was not forward deployed the first time he was stationed with Marines. That will happen after his wedding...OMG! Did I say that out loud? Love my future DIL as much as my own daughter. It will be challenging when a forward deployment happens which I have been told will happen. Hugs all around.
