@yorkshirelass my understanding when our son signed was because the training was longer for this rate you had to sign a longer enlistment.

On another note, does anyone have an HM stationed in Parris Island at the Marine Camp?  Is there a page for there?

  • annev

Bobbi H - My son was at Paris Island for the last 3 years, but left in December and is now attached to the Marines.  I didn't ever connect to a Paris Island Group, but there may be one.  My son had a great 3 years there and lots of opportunities as well.

  • Bobbi H

Thanks annev!  My son heads there in mid-late November after 2 years overseas.  I'm hoping he has some good opportunities while there.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I don't know of a group for Parris Island but you can start one!  Send a message out to all our members here, also Corpsman Moms, and Corpsman Moms and Dads and see if you can connect to others others that way.

Forward deployed roughly equals permanently stationed outside the US or and ready to respond...

Hello Everyone!  My son is graduating 9/22 from HM School, and I am wondering if anyone has info on hotels and directions.  There is a link above, but when I click on it it reroutes me to some strange link.  Thanks for your help!

  • plmont0429

Magpie, my son is also graduating on 9/22. We are staying at the Courtyard near the airport. I couldn't get the link to open either.

  • Magpie

I ended up calling the ihg site which made reservations for me for Candlewood Suite on base.  Do you want the number?  I am taking a cab from the airport which is only about $27.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Well, that was weird!  The link is fixed and here it is:  Visiting your student: Hotel and other recommendations by corpsman ...

  • jennifer

Will you tell me about graduation after you go? I was not planning on going to my son's just bc it is so far away. I'm just curious what it consists of etc. Thanks.
  • Magpie

    Jennifer, I sure will!

  • Magpie

    Thanks, Marcy!

  • my3sons

Hi just joined the group, my son is still in BC with a PIR 11/03 and then he will be headed to A school.

  • jennifer

Hi my3sons. My guy seems to like A school. Your guy will be there before you know it! Hard to believe Nov is right around the corner.
  • my3sons

Thanks jennifer, I am excited to see him and yes it will be here soon already making our travel arrangements !

  • jennifer

Well..I love retail therapy..so here are a few items I didnt know about. They sell division coins and dicision t-shirts at graduation. So if interested have cash. Also nice picture magnet calendars of the division.at sarges meet and greet there are all kinds of things to to buy and get monogrammed while you wait. I got a Navy sweatshirt with a glitter anchor on the arm. Its one of my favorites. If you stay at Navy lodge they give you a pass to the Nex. You can only be in the front part of store without your Sailor. My husband enjoyed that. Then we got home...and said what why did I get all this stuff! We also got to graduation at 7 when the doors open and sat in first row in front of division sign. We thought it was a great spot and you could get to them so quick for that hug! Bring seat cushions and tissues! Good luck!
  • my3sons

Good to know about bringing cash for "stuff" I am planning on attending the meet and greet also. I will have to remember the seat cushions..

Jennifer, graduation was awesome!  I went the day before and took my son and his buddies out to dinner.  The graduation was the next day at 3 p.m. in an auditorium and was wonderful!  Each corpsman walked across the stage and the instructor announced their rank, name and their next duty station.  They unfortunately went so fast I couldn't snap a pic.  They didn't have each one stop and face the audience so I missed out.  Otherwise, it was a great experience!  Anyone who is interested should stay at the IHG Candlewood on base.  Beautiful accommodations!

  • jennifer

Magpie...thank you. I was wondering how it went. I love San Antonio too. We had a talk and decided no to going. He said he hopes to graduate and come home for a couple days. We have a grandbaby due at that time and that is what is makimg me so wishy washy! So many unknowns and I like to plan! So glad it was a good time. Congrats to your son and you!! Does he get to visit home?
  • Babybird98

  • Ulla22

Hello, my son graduated Great Lakes boot camp on Friday. Arrived in San Antonio yesterday noon. Called me upon arrival. Have not heard anything since the. Trying to pack his phone, computer, clothe etc. to send to him. Is there anyway to contact him, since he does not have a phone. I am a newbie. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

  • Gundo Girl

Hi Partyofseven. There are so many places to stay. The base is pretty much centrally located. We stayed close to River Walk the first time we visited. It was about 15 min car ride to the base. The 2nd visit we actually rented an Airbnb. My son has full liberty and can stay off base 5pm Friday to 10pm Sunday. I would wait until your son has phase 3 liberty before you visit. You really won’t be able to do much with him before that. My son will not be able to come home for Thanksgiving but he’ll be finished with A school and will be home for 10 days at Christmas. My son was helping all the new recruits get settled, yesterday. Chances are my son was with yours at some point yesterday!
  • DereksMom

My son has been in San Antonio A School since August 26. He too will be coming home for Christmas before he heads out to his next base. What had worked for us, may work for others or may not. When he left Basic we brought a suitcase filled with his computer, cloths etc. and gave it to him at airport in Chicago. He was able to check it in and we have not mailed anything yet. Anything else he needed he would walk to Px or commissary for. Everything is walking distance he said.

  • Counting Fridays

DereksMom, my son is in the same class. Does he actually know his next assignment yet? Has the graduation date been set for sure?

  • DereksMom

Hi Counting Fridays, I don't know if the graduation date is set for sure yet but my son mentioned around the end of second week of December, sometime around there.  As far as orders, I know they where picking them last week but my understanding is they will not know which one they got until its closer to graduating.

  • plina

My son went to San Antonio on 9/8/17 and he told me in his second week there that his graduation is 1/19/18. He just told me this week that they had openings for 2 A schools and who ever was interested could put in for it. And he is doing it because it was one of the schools he was interested in.
  • T's mom

Just because they make a selection does not mean they will get it. My son got something totally different because the Surgeon General said they need spaces filled in that area.
  • plina

I know I was just letting her know that for my son’s class they were only offering 2 A schools.
  • Ulla22

    Hello,

Does anyone know if the sailors have health insurance once they enter A school. It is time to renew our health insurance plan  and I wanted to know if I need to include him in our health insurance. I know, the military has Tri Care. At what point are they eligible? Thank you

  • DereksMom

@Ulla22 Your sailor is covered for medical Day ONE of basic training, and for proof of insurance he will get a copy of it on the mypay website,  which He has accesses to. As long as he stays in military his needs are met.

  • yorkshirelass

Hi everyone my son arrived at his A school yesterday after graduation on 11/3,just wanted to say hello and to introduce myself.Anyone else new in the group and have a Sailor arrive yesterday?.He told me classes start November 12th
  • DereksMom

@yorkshirelass Welcome, I'm sure your son was on the 2 bus load of new sailors coming to A School. There are so many of them, the classes don't start right away. That was how it was with my son. I'm not new, my son will graduate around the dec 18.

  • yorkshirelass

Derek’s mom- hello and thank you
  • 222natty

    Thanks

  • yorkshirelass

  • yorkshirelass

Ahi 122natty PIR sailors arrived the same dau
  • DereksMom

Hi partyofseven my son will be home for Christmas & New Years but will stay in Texas for Thanksgiving. He is in the last class to graduate for the fiscal year. The next graduating classes will be in January.

  • plina

My son will come home for Xmas so if they are planning to better get the plane tickets now, those xmas flights get expensive. he will be staying in San Antonio for thanksgiving and he graduates on January 18.

  • MerC

My son did not pass the final exam (yes even the retake only got a 74) and is now waiting for a review from the dean.  Does anyone here know if he can be reassigned to another job --he said he would be "unassigned" from now on if they don't let him?

  • DereksMom

@MerC I believe they get reassigned if there are job openings for what he qualified for, if not then unassigned. That is what my understanding is. They are not getting held back anymore cause there is allot of them in classes coming up.

  • partyofseven

Hi- I was wondering if any knows when school starts back up from the Christmas holiday? Is it the 3rd of Jan or the 7th?

  • partyofseven

plina- thank you so much. :)

  • plina
