JayDee - OMG that would be crazy!!!! I think you can youtube it and see videos of that happening (good thing you didn't watch them before she left - yikes!) Definitely something she will always remember - what a story to be able to tell!
J's/S's - no no no, wouldn't even want to imagine everyone being sick on a sub ~ ugh!
B'sNukeMom, it sounds like quite an experience to me! I do believe she loved it. Apparently she could hear the crew talking and knew they were going to have to come around again, but the ones who didn't hear were a bit surprised. Knowing that kid, she would have been disappointed if it were just a routine landing.
I keep forgetting to ask my son but how do I figure out what class he's in (he just arrived at A school about a month ago)? Is it that second line of their address that is a 4 digit # followed by a letter indicating their rate?
The first 2 numbers indicate the Fiscal year the class started - 2017. It should be 17 (Fiscal year 2017 runs from October 1st, 2016 to September 30th, 2017). The second 2 numbers indicate the week the class started during the fiscal year. So if he started about a month ago it's probably around 32 or 33 or close to that (providing I counted correctly and I don't know exactly when your son started!). So I think it would be 1732 or 1733 or close to that. An A after is usually for an MM and a MT is for either EM or ET.
Thank you, B'sNuke... He's in class 1738! I'm guessing the week number is later than you thought since he had to wait a bit after arriving before starting his actual classes.
PattiP that is such great news. It must feel good to figure out these things happening in our own bodies.
Uh, JayDee, it just dawned on that your nukette flew in a jet to her ship. For some reason I had a ship to ship boarding in my mind. Missing the hook just took on a whole new meaning. That's is just plain old scary!!
Holy Hippo PattiP! LOL! When I was a little girl I would never drink my milk during snack time in pre-school and then kindergarten. My pre-school teacher used to force me to drink it then I didn't feel good. Back in the day, there was no such thing as lactose intolerance. I stopped drinking milk as soon as nobody "made" me. Now I've started using soy milk and love it. Of course at my stage in life a little extra soy is a good thing and has made an incredible difference.
Buzzbeck, yes the landing sounds scary and cool all at once. Knowing my daughter it was just the perfect thing to cap off her experience. How's your son doing? I can't remember where he was headed after prototype.
This site never fails to educate. Itchy ears? Fascinating! And I am unaware of the advantages of soy so I can see I have my homework cut out for me. Patti, so, so happy you are getting back to your old self. You had us worried there for a while.
J's/S's, do our nukes have to live in barracks below E5? Mine has always been married since he entered the fleet so I am unfamiliar with that. Somehow I thought our nukes were always able to live in housing or an apartment. Anyway, having no power is a bummer for all our beloved nerds. No fun!
NancyJo, I was wondering about he housing too as my nuke is married as well.
Just before she left for the big blue they closed on their first home. They bought the place sight unseen contingent on inspection. Brave kids, but it's a super cute house (at least all the on line pictures are nice) and it has a nice fenced in yard for when I take her dog back to her. Here's the picture that the real estate agent took at closing.
I have only looked at the barracks barges from a distance but to me they look like prison ships. I guess it's just a place to sleep in the end but it seems depressing to me. Land barracks just seem more appealing if they are available. I suppose they don't really get to choose do they?
JayDee - cute picture - and yes they do look happy :)
Patti - Ugh on the food allergies - I love milk and eat my yogurt every day. That would be a bummer to have to give them up. I have heard of allergies coming on later in life. Really, like we don't have enough other things going on then to have to put up with that too?!? Lately when hubby & I go to the doctor any little thing their response now is "Well, you are getting to that age". yep, don't remind me!
B'sNukeMom, I'm starting to wonder about the value of doctors. Despite working out with a trainer once a week, taking her core classes 3 more days and eating more veggies & lean protein, I've gained a few pounds that I can't shake. At a recent appointment I brought this up to my doctor. His response "Well, one day nutrition and fitness will be important to you again". WHAT? Apparently he didn't hear a word I'd said and painted me with that broad "aging" brush. Seriously dude?
Major question!! Just got my son from PIR and we are talking about him leaving tomorrow. How do we meet our sailor at the airport to give him his phone and other things?
We just did the Meet at the airport" thing last Saturday. Go to the airport (we went at midnight), and wait on the arrivals level for the sailors to walk in from the bus. At O'Hare, you can't go to the USO with them on Sat AM because there are too many people, although usually Sailors can have guests there. We exchanged items with our daughter after they were all in and head-counted: that's when we gave her her phone. Then we went with her to a special desk they had opened, very convenient to security, to get a Family Pass to go to the gate. By now, about 2 hours had been used up. All the usual rules apply to going through security, no liquids, etc. We went to the gate and waited a very long time with our daughter for the flight to SC. It was lots of fun. One point: there was just ONE place to buy any food before security, so it's best to buy a snack before the whole group comes into the airport. Then the line really backs up.This is for just the airport we went to, of course. If you private message me, I can provide some more details. This info is also on http://navyformoms.ning.com/group/bootcampmoms/page/liberty-during-....
Cejota, he should know what airport he's flying out of and what time. Just meet him at the airport and hand it to him. We were told the group would arrive between 2:00 - 2:30 am - no matter what flight they were on. We got to Midway at 2:00. Shortly thereafter the bus pulled up, the sailors got off and a group of parents followed them like bees after the hive. They had some things they needed to do then they were "released" to visit with us. We were even provided passes to go through security with them. If you have the airport and arrival time you have all the information that you really need. Trust me, it's easy to find them.
JayDee659- WOW! I think my jaw would have hit the floor by his reply. OnceI picked it back up I am not sure if what I wanted to reply back would have been appropriate. GEESH! WTH! I might have been satisfied just by saying out loud, "Great bedside manners you have!" LOL
Cejota- My son's PIR was June 16th. We planned the night before with him about what time to meet and where at the airport. We met him at the USO, Saturday morning @ 2AM. Although O'Hare had a lot of sailors there who were shipping out, it wasn't bad otherwise for us. My son borrowed someone else's cell phone and told us where he was exactly, just to be safe. We were able to meet him at the USO, but were only there momentarily. We were also allowed to get gate passes to go with him through security checkpoint and stay with him until his plane took off. There were actually several Nukes flying out and then other sailors who were going elsewhere. We had a smooth process, but I have heard of others who haven't been as lucky. Wishing you and your sailor the best.
Okaybsound sounds good. He said the bus is leaving base at 330am and he's flying out of O'Hare. I'll just plan to be there by 330am. Now another question. He wasn't sure if he was allowed to bring his laptop to GC. Do any of you know?
JayDee - I think my reaction would have been similar to AZ!! LOL! My word! Your kid & kid-in-law are cute and look like babies! Hm...maybe I'm getting old. So exciting to have their first house!
I don't know about the benefits of soy, either. I have several health problems that are exacerbated by soy, so I have to try to avoid it. Not that I'm very careful about it. I mostly drink water anyway, so I use almond milk in my morning shakes. I drink cow's milk very rarely, since it makes me very phlegm-y. Someday I'll have milk goats and solve all the problems. :D
Thanks ladies! My daughter was not thrilled about having her picture taken, she never has been. I was shocked when I got a selfie before she headed to her ship. Now her husband isn't so camera shy. I had sent him some snapchats of their dog and he sent me back one of him. I showed it to the dog but she was not impressed! She just wanted another treat.
JayDee - wow! Can't believe it's been a year already - boy time sure does fly. Happy Anniversary to them - although what an anniversary - her on deployment. And his mom's not on here?
WonderGeek, I have noticed a phenomenon where people who are around the age of your children seem like children. Heck, my wife's gastroenterologist looks like an asian version of Doogie Howser. And if you know who Doogie Howser was, you might be of a certain age. I wonder if my parents look at people in their '60s and think: "kids!". I should ask.
B'sNukeMom, no his mom is not on here. I've invited her and told her all about it. To each his own. I'm glad I'm here as I wouldn't have made it without all my fabulous sea sisters!
WLHs, I'm hitting a milestone in July and it has given me pause. My dear mother who died a yr and a half ago said to me once after she was in a nursing home, "I guess I'm old but I don't feel like it. I just feel like me." I don't feel old unless I've just spent the day with my grandkids.
ps JayDee, you're right, to each his own. But these people are the best!
Wow - our internet was down last night and then I was out and about for a bit today so it took me a while to catch up on all the posts.

Than just today when we were out for breakfast our waitress said she had been lactose intolerant her whole life but that there are over the counter lactose pills available that she takes when she does have milk products and then they don't bother her. My husband hasn't tried those yet.
JayDee - really cute picture of your kids. I told my husband about her landing on the aircraft carrier - his eyes got wide open! Sounds exciting.
And to any of you that might be getting to see your sailors over this long weekend - enjoy. It's killing me that we can't go see ours this weekend. Late in August - so less than 2 months now that we'll get to see him.
JayDee - she doesn't know what she's missing not being on here. I know I never could have made it through everything without N4M and all of you :p Heck, I still can't cut the cord lol!
I hope everyone has a wonderful & safe 4th of July! Be sure to keep your furbabies safe :) If you get to see your sailor be sure to give them an extra hug for those that won't see theirs. I'll be back in the office on the 5th so I'll check back in then.
Ok, now I am going to search this site for "cake balls".
JayDee, I love your photo, they do look young and happy. Has it been a year? Our sailor is waiting for fresh orders. They were for Pearl.
Mr. Buzzbeck is going to ride a float in our local parade on Tuesday. The float is a giant fish, and he will be playing the banjo. No, I don't make this stuff up.
My sailor is all set and on his way to SC. We couldn't stay with him all morning but we spent a few hours with him. His backpack was pretty much empty and he was able to pack all the things he asked me to bring for him.
I was so happy to see him for just a short period of time just to see him one more time.
We are now heading back to Michigan.
Thanks for all the help and advice!! Much appreciated

I have pictures from that trip as our screen saver and when I really get to missing our sailor I will just sit and look at them - especially the ones with him in.
