Hi everyone - Happy Wednesday - I love these short weeks!!!  I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July!  We spent a nice relaxing day by the pool (after watching youngest & his GF run in a 5k!).

nurserenee - BZ to your son on his prototype grad this Friday.  Will you be going?  I believe there are some moms here whose sailors graduated on the Yorktown.  Hopefully they will chime in.....

Patti - how was Vegas?  Did you get to see the street performers?  I hope you are enjoying your trip :)

Cejota - so glad you had a good time at PIR and nice that you were able to give your son some items to carry on to SC.  Hopefully he is getting all settled in now.

JayDee - I saw some pictures of the port stop from another sailor - looks like a nice place to be :)  I hope your nukette was able to see some of the sights.

Welcome to our newest member ~ Kristen.  She is also an AZ mom.  Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom, she did get to go ashore - every day in fact.  I guess because she's not qualified to do anything on the ship she had plenty of time.  Unfortunately because she joined the ship late in the trip, she was unable to sign up for tours.  She has banded together with a few other new sailors and they went to the zoo, some beautiful gardens and the beach. Unfortunately a jellyfish got in her shorts and she was stung.  Ugh.  She spent her first wedding anniversary away from her husband.  The good news is that we got to talk to her a lot and she sounds happy.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

B'sNuke, that sounds like a fun 4th. Running a 5K! In NE weather that would be grueling! I'm sure it was less humid in CA.

Speaking of, I'm glad some of you moms love the heat but I'm not one of them. Dry heat, humid heat, it's all misery to me.

I love hearing about our sailors moving through the pipeline. Those milestones are so important. BZ, moms!

Yes, short weeks are great. I spent the 4th w/ my daughter and ex-nuke SIL and had a great time. Gave my 3-yr-old grandson a toy army machine gun that lights up on the end, makes rat-a-tat sounds and vibrates for his birthday. He loved it but was under the weather. He sat on the couch like a wet noodle, gazed into space and just pulled the trigger over and over again. Probably imagining all the squirrels he was shooting out of the trees. My daughter and husband thanked me for yet another noisy toy. LOL That's what grandparents are for. I also gave him 2 books so I fulfilled that obligation. Then a great fireworks show that night in their little town. We commented on how American it all was. Family, fireworks, watermelon. So great. But an hour drive home for me after it all and back to work this a.m. This Sea Sister is tired. Texted my sailor but no response. He might have had his dad visiting from NV so I will probably hear after dad goes home.

PattiP, I'm still astounded that food allergies might be the major player in your misery of late. A lesson for all of us. I hope the well feeling continues and you are enjoying your travels. Post pics when you are done.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Buzzbeck, I wanted to tell you I think it's great that your husband was in the parade! LOL My ex played a lot of banjo in the day before his ALS made that impossible. Love a good banjo tune! The image is pretty funny.

JayDee, I didn't know your sailor had ported. I don't know where but that's OK. Our sailors do get some great opportunities to see the world. She'll get more chances for tours, etc. I'm sorry she isn't with her hubby for their anniversary, though. Welcome to the Navy.

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

PattiP - I hope you had a good visit in AZ & UT. My in laws live in Prescott. It is a little bit cooler up there, but not a huge relief. Now Flagstaff is much cooler and many people who live in the valley LOVE to escape up there. LOL!

Utah is beautiful. All the National Parks are wonderful. I do enjoy the scenery. That's what I will say about living in Utah.

Sorry we couldn't meet up while you were on your venture, maybe another time.

I am with you... I WILL TAKE THE HEAT OVER THE COLD ANYDAY! LOL!

Glad your daughter will be in Phoenix, that's where I grew up about 1/2 of my adulthood. The other 1/2 was in Chicago suburbs. We've lived in San Diego, and suburbs of Columbus, Ohio too. Only lived in Ohio for a couple years. The winter wasn't too cold there, especially compared to Chicago winters. I also thought the people in Ohio were super nice.

How long has your son been in the Navy? My son is just starting his journey, so who knows if he will make a career out of it our not. My sister did, but my husband did not. Things change over the years, so only time will tell for my son and his direction in the Navy. He is in GC now and I believe this week they are just starting "actual" class. I pray the Nuke Program is a positive experience for him.

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

I have a quick question for you all here. Did your kiddos get passports? I know my son will be in A school for almost 2 years, but I wanted to get some insight as to whether or not he should get a passport for when he goes into the Fleet. I have heard conflicting stories about how some have needed them for liberty in certain ports while others have not. Thank you in advance.

  • JayDee659

My daughter took her passport but I forgot to ask if she needed it.

It's not a secret where they were as the Jerusalem Post did several stories while they were there and furthermore they have moved on. They were in Israel and I have lots of beautiful pictures.

Nancy Jo, I'm with you, cold over heat any day.
  • JayDee659

J's /S's mom, she says she's fine but time will tell. She also got a really bad sunburn before she went out to the ship. I hope nothing is worse when she calls again. She was wearing pt shorts and I guess it swam into the leg opening and hit stuck! Poor kid.
  • soccermom19

AZ2OH2IL2UT  my son already had a passport.  I think he brought it to the recruiter initially and they held on to it.  I never did ask if he got that back or where it is now.  That's a good question.

  • soccermom19

J's /S's mom.  Hope your sailor is ok.  That's gotta smart.  And sunburn too!!  Definitely not her day.  Hope she recovers quickly.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Oh JayDee, I missed the jellyfish thing! OUCH! And sunburn too. she can't catch a break!

My son got his passport before he left on deployment. He didn't want to chance anything in case he needed to travel and he had heard that while military ID is enough most of the time, he didn't want any snafus. (Again, I say Thank You to the navy for this sense of responsibility.) With his dad sick and not knowing when something might happen, my sailor figured better safe than sorry.

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

Thank you all for your Passport replies. I am sure my sailor will get his, but seeing as he doesn't need it as of yet, he can at least put it off for a year or so. Thanks again!!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Sometimes it's better for mama not to know until after it's all done. Yikes, you ladies have war stories! The only thing so far for my sailor was when he was sitting in his office chair and put his finger where it shouldn't have been and somehow smashed it in the chair. He's pretty sure he broke it but having had lots of basketball/baseball injuries, he knew all anybody would do is tape it since it wasn't mangled. He took care of it himself instead of going to medical and he says he's right as rain now. Sheesh. Of course, that's all I know about. Who knows what he hasn't told me. He's not one to share that kind of thing. I only know about the finger from his wife.

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

My non-nuke son, cut his head badly by rating it on a light bulb in his rack.

About the worst injury to the nuke twin was a BAD sand rash diving for a frisbee.

    They are two different boys.

The first boy texted today that he had to work yesterday. He got a job on a commercial salmon boat. They caught 70,000 lbs of salmon yesterday!! I can't imagine that. You can google where he lives and there is a pretty nice drone fly over. Seldovia, AK

The nuke one said, "Can't get more patriotic than having watch for the 4th."

I can not have soy due to breast CA either. Most of the soy grown here is GMO anyway.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

COTwin, you can tell your twins are not identical. LOL Wow, salmon fishing sounds like a great job provided he doesn't have to do it in the winter. Is that seasonal? Sounds like your son is settling in as a civilian. I'm glad he's keeping in touch. I was a little worried. It sounds better now.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Thursday!

JayDee - jellyfish stings - oh no!!!  And on top of a sunburn.  Ugh what a start.....

CoTwin - the salmon sounds delicious!  I love sushi and salmon is my absolute favorite :p

J's/S'smom - geez, I wonder if he gave himself a concussion smacking his head that hard!

NancyJo - finger smashes hurt the worst!  I closed mine in the sliding door of a van a few years ago in a Costco parking lot - had to get stitches.  Boy did it throb (and throb and throb!). After we came out of urgent care my hubby took me over to the door and asked me to please explain how I managed to close the door and stick my finger in it at the same time.  As he was looking at the door he saw my skin was still stuck on it.  It was gross!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

AZ2OH2IL2UT - on the passport subject - my son got his at the recommendation of his command.

  • JayDee659

    Oh my, your poor finger!

Less than a year after we were married, we were remodeling our home.  I was carrying our enormous tank vac across our torn up, uneven floor, tripped on the floor and the dog and smashed my hand between the wall (concrete block) and the vacuum.  I called my mom because both sides of my hand were turning black and swelling up.  Fortunately my husband had stopped by mom's and came right home and took me to an urgent care.  When we got there they looked at my hand and would not let my husband go back with me.  While they were examining me they kept asking how I'd done it.  A lady came in and asked if "he" (referring to my husband) had done this. I innocently said "no" and once again (probably for the 3rd time) explained what had happened.  This lady looked at me, informed me that I should not protect someone who'd beaten me like that and told me they had someone waiting out back who could take me to  a "safe" place where "he" couldn't find me!  HOLY CRAP.  When I finally figured out what was going on I insisted that they let my husband come back. They just would not hear me when I told them he was at my mother's house.  Better safe than sorry, but as a young bride, and I mean YOUNG, I was more scared of them forcibly removing me from my husband.  Back then spouse abuse was just getting publicity for the first time and I guess these folks were really gung ho.  Thirty years later we still laugh about it when I hurt myself.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Oh B'sNuke, what a story! About 10 years ago or so I managed to catch my ring finger as I slammed the heavy steel front door of my house. It tore the top of my finger off, nail and all. I ran to the kitchen and called my sister to come and take me to the ER. When I opened the front door to let her in my piece of finger complete with nail fell to the floor. Grisly. The good news is they saved my nail so it isn't even noticeable. Isn't it nuts how we do things that don't make sense? I have no idea how it happened. Yup, you're right, it really hurts. 8^O

  • soccermom19

    JayDee659 - Wow, what a story!!!

NancyJO - Wow to you too!!!

So, here's my finger story.  Slammed the car door closed and forgot to move my finger.  Finger turned the color of an eggplant.  Drove myself to the hospital with the kids who were in car seats.  Had to get them out and take them in with me.  They looked at me like - you did what?  By yourself?  I'm like sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.  Home alone and no one in sight but the toddlers.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Good grief, JayDee! I'm glad you can laugh about it now. I bet it wasn't so funny at the time.

J's/S's, yes a short week is welcome. I was going to work all 3 days but I think I'm taking tomorrow afternoon off and getting a mani-pedi with a girlfriend. This salon we know lets you bring wine and relax while you get it. That sounds pretty terrific right about now.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

soccermom, you're a woman after my own heart. A mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do.  <3<3<3

I might add that when I smashed my finger my future nuke was laying on the couch sick. I called to him to come help me and he said he was too sick to get up. I'm happy to report he is much more considerate now. I excuse him with the fact that he was only in high school. On the other hand, I don't let him forget it.

  • Esti'sMom

All of you ladies are the greatest!! :) I enjoy reading about all of your stories! I keep forgetting to comment because I feel like I already have... with all of the laughs, ouches and more.
My daughter called yesterday from BC (she's supposed to graduate 8/4)... And I wish I hadn't heard from her. She has a stress fracture in her foot and won't be graduating as planned (not sure when at this point). I'm thankful it wasn't worse, but really didn't want to hear her tell us this through her tears. :( Hoping for a speedy recovery!!
  • JayDee659

soccermom19, yes, sometimes we just have to suck it up and take care of things ourselves.  About 20 years ago I got a paper cut in the eye. I was at work and knew I'd hurt it but didn't know how badly.  I drove myself to the hospital that was 1/2 hour away from work (but closer to home).  They could not believe that I'd driven myself the whole way.  For the record, I've never had anything hurt worse than that cut on my eye.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

    J's/S's, you are so right.

Esti'sMom, injuries are not unheard of. She will just get moved back and eventually she'll graduate. It's hard on Mama, though, when you get those teary calls. Hang in there. Try to be encouraging to her (easier said than done) and we are here to help you. We've been there too.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

We always think we can do anything. After I had my colonoscopy my sister drove me home b/c they say don't drive afterwards. When we got to my place I thanked my sister and said I certainly feel as if I could have driven myself. I felt just fine. She looked at me funny and said, no, it's a good thing I didn't. I wonder how I actually was b/c really I felt great. I do remember that look though so maybe I wasn't as great as I thought.

  • soccermom19

JayDee659 - Yikes~!!!  I actually got the willies reading that.  A cut in the eye.  And drove yourself.  You get the award on macho mom!!!!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Oh JayDee an eyeball papercut - that's one of my worst fears!  It gives me the willies thinking about it too :(

NancyJo - my mom took me a few years ago for my colonoscopy.  Everyone warned me it causes so much gas after and I was so worried about that.  They put me in a wheelchair to take me out to the car and my mom said the whole way through the lobby all I kept saying was "I didn't f*#t did I?" She said I was practically shouting it by the time we got out to the car.....I don't remember it at all lol.  Then I insisted she go through the drive through at Taco Bell to get me something to eat after (again I don't remember any of this!) and she said I was shouting it in the car at the drive through window.  I was really worried about this!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Esti's mom - hang in there - they'll give her time to heal.  I believe they'll move her to a different division (which the name of is escaping me right now) and it will take time.  Like NancyJo said, continue to be as encouraging as you can and tell her to remain positive - think of this as a "test".  She can get through this!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

    B'sNuke,

  • WonderGeekWoman

Phew! The finger injury stories!! Fascinating, grisly, comedic, all so brave!

JayDee - Oh my word, eye pain is horrible! I had laser corrective surgery and that was torture (though worth it, and I will do it again eventually). But a CUT! Gruesome! You're amazing to have driven like that! You ARE muy macho!

Esti'sMom - Prayers for your daughter and you! It's amazing how much we hurt when our kids hurt. She'll be fine soon and she'll go on to do awesome things.

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom, I'm laughing with you!  I had to take my husband for a colonoscopy a couple years ago.  Of course, he had lots of gas after the procedure.  Every time he'd fart he'd say "please excuse me".  A couple weeks later he took his brother to have his done.  My husband said to me "Wow, my brother really farted a lot after the procedure, I'm sure glad that didn't happen to me".  Hahaha.  He didn't remember.  Of course, he also tried to insist that he was okay to drive home and after we got home spent 1/2 hour standing outside talking to our neighbor.  He must have said "I love you man" a hundred times - and doesn't remember that either.

  • Esti'sMom

Thank you ladies!! :) Your encouragement helps greatly... And I can use that when writing her.
  • WonderGeekWoman

    JayDee & B'sNukeMom - you're KILLING me!!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Esti'smom - here's the link for the RCU group.  It's not real active but from what I can see they have a facebook group.  If you join the group someone can probably get you info to join the FB group:

    http://navyformoms.ning.com/group/ship04div2341

  • JayDee659

Of course there's my girlfriend who has to have a colonoscopy done every 6 months due to family history.  All her life her dad has used the phrase "I'm so hungry I could eat the crotch out of a rag doll" and it would totally embarrass her.  After her first colonoscopy guess what she told the technician?   Yes, she was so hungry...  LOVE anesthesia.

Disclaimer, the above story was not meant to be offensive to rag dolls, people who own rag dolls or may be thinking of owning one.  It was just a funny story.

  • WonderGeekWoman

JayDee! No! Stop! My stomach hurts!! HAHAHAHA

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

    Bwaaahaaaaahaaaa!

  • JayDee659

WonderGeekWoman, this is the same friend who is a nurse.  She rarely wears perfume, but had decided to wear some one night when the doctor she was interested in was working.  The doctor walked up behind her and told her that he liked her perfume.  Her response "I know, I smell so good I just want to eat myself".  He did ask her out after he stopped laughing.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Too much! It's too much! LOL

  • Esti'sMom

Thanks B'sNukeMom! J's/S'smom, yes she's been removed from her division to RCU
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • Esti'sMom

B'sNukeMom, I love it!!! That is SO me!!! LOL

J's/S'smom, I'm glad she is there (if other than home lol). I will be sure to let her know!!
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

First, WOW you guys sure have posted a lot since yesterday!!

My nuke broke his foot, He had a cold and that same day they had Gas Chamber day and then he had watch on the other side of the RTG and he had to run the whole way. He was a snotty mess and a hurt foot. He never said anything about the foot and just before PIR he had a physical and the Dr. noticed the foot. The Dr. noticed  it and asked him, "Did you know you broke your foot?" Silly kid, did not want to complain.

I have a good friend whose Grandson decided to join after mine did. He also injured his thigh. The Hospital told him he broke his femur and they later found he had a rare cancer. That injury saved his life.

My finger story. My cat at the time was in my garage and I was just coming in, when the neighbors dog cam rushing to get the cat. I quickly grabbed whatever to get the door shut and had grabbed the seam in the door with all of my fingers and the door shut trapping all of my fingers in the door. My neighbor heard me yelling for help and released me. Most of the fingers had split open. OUCH. I am always very careful closing garage doors now.

You all have had some funny stories and some not so funny.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy Friday!  I for one love these 3 day work weeks!  It's heating up here in SoCal which isn't really a bad thing but we are getting some humidity with it this weekend which is unusual for us....I'm meeting a good friend of mine in Cabazon tomorrow (which is out by Palm Springs) to go shopping at the outlets and I'm hoping it's not miserable.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Palm Springs is desert, right? Doesn't Desert = Hot ?

Meanwhile, shopping at outlets sounds like fun. I hope you find some great deals!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

PS B'sNuke, your Red Friday graphic here is one of my favs.

  • 3B'smom

Wow, Cabazon! I went to school at the Univ of Redlands. Made a few trips out to Cabazon to go shopping. Hope you have a good trip.
