NancyJo - yes it's the desert and very hot! My friend lives in Palm Springs - this morning at 6am it was 72* at my house and it was already 90* at her house :O I don't know how she does it - of course I like the heat more than the cold but that's really HOT. I think she runs her AC from about March until October.....
J's/S'smom - Asian Tiger mosquitoes - sounds horrible! I just sent some Avon Skin So Soft bug spray to B in VA for the mosquitos....we don't get too many mosquitos out here thankfully!
Wow I sure missed a lot the last day and a half. We were getting ready to go camping and then driving. Some of your stories had me howling. My husband and I always joke that taking each other to colonoscopy are the only dates we get.
I just finished putting up on the rest of the comments. Speaking of mosquitoes and heat where we're camping it's very mosquitoy. And on the way here we got stuck in a town about 35 miles from my destination due to an accident on the highway and it was a 106 degrees there. But today it's only supposed to get to 101.
HI everyone, I need some advice. My SR has PIR on 25 August. He is a Nuke and the thought is A School in Sourth Carolina. What will happen after PIR? Does he have leave? Does he go immediately to A School? Does he go to A School the next day? He wants his phone & computer. How do I get that to him? When do I get that to him?
And I am also planning my flight. I am trying to get in the day before for Sarge's Meet & Greet. PIR will be the next day. If he's leaving that day right after PIR, I will check out that day. If there's a chance he will have leave and I can take him out to dinner I will stay that night and fly home the next morning.
Soccermom19 they generally leave the next day. Holidays can have bearing on that. We met our daughter at the airport at 2:30 Saturday morning and gave her phone and computer to her. We were also allowed to go through security with her. Her flight left at 7;00 am or so but that all varies depending on which airline and airport. They will know all this at PIR. Have fun, it's a wonderful experience!
Soccermom19. My sons PIR was Friday 6/30. It was over around 10:30am. We were off base by 11:30am with him. He needed to be back on base by 8pm. We spent the day with him. He left the next morning for SC. His bus picked him up at 3am. We met him at the airport around 3:45am. Gave him his phone, laptop and other things he asked for. We stayed a free hours and then left. We drove. We live in Michigan. His flight was at 3pm so we could have stayed with him.
Things to think about - he has a duffle bag, garment bag and a backpack to carry on that he has to carry along with his orders and his hat. My sons backpack was empty because he wanted room for his stuff. It was so heavy for him to carry!!
There is a USO at the O'Hara airport. It's in terminal 2 which is where they all arrive and then go where they need to. Your sailor can go in there and eat and relax. Family can not.
When my son called to say he made it through he still didn't have his orders. We didn't find out until Friday when he was leaving and what time.
He arrived in SC that Saturday and I sent him 5 boxes which he got this Friday. He is super happy at this point. His school doesn't start until after 7/12 but he has been working already.
Likes his roommate and suite mates who are in Power school. I find that helpful because they can help the new sailors out.
I'm sure others will tell you more but I hope this helps you a little.
We got to get a pass to hang at the gate with him till he boarded his flight which was mid afternoon. We ate lunch and hung out.
After PIR the day before we also were off base by 11:30 and went out for Chicago pizza and went shopping. We brought him what he bought to the airport. The rest of the day Friday we hung out at our hotel. We had to escort him back to base in a taxi, he was not allowed to go alone.
Beautiful pictures. Nice to see you and hubby. You were not far south of me!! It was hot last week.
So one boy, when asked what they did for the 4th said, "Duty, No other way to America than on duty "
His twin was working on the commercial fishing boat that day. Texted the next day that the days catch was, get this, 70,000 lbs of salmon. Can you even imagine that?
Patti, wonderful pics! I'm glad you were able to enjoy your vaca. So beautiful. Then, COWS! LOL
COTwin, looks like your fisherman is all tuckered out. Salmon fishing must be hard work. :D Fresh salmon does sound good.
soccermom it would be great if we could give all kinds of concrete details about PIR and on to GC but it's just impossible to know until you get there. You got real good information already. Most sailors fly out the next day, it seems like most from O'Hare but it might be Midway, like JayDee's daughter. Your sailor won't get leave...you get Friday after PIR and then whatever luck deals you on Saturday. But that time is sweet. <3 Don't worry if you don't have a bunch of stuff to give him before he flies out because you can always ship things to him. He will want his phone and computer for sure. PIR is just one of the best things.
My Nebraska Navy moms had lunch on Saturday. So many different rates and experiences. One mom is counting down 17 days to her son leaving for boot camp. That would be 15 days now. One is in training to be a Physician Assistant. Some are having great experiences, a couple not so good. Great support, though. I love my navy moms, online and in person.
B'sNuke, I made the asparagus & shrimp in the Instant Pot this weekend. Delish and easy! My kind of cooking. However, I'm pretty sure I'm not using it often enough to justify my kids getting it for me. Being an empty nester I just don't cook. Maybe I just need to get used to it but what I have done has been great! Meanwhile, I know you are getting ready for your trip east in a few weeks. I'll be in CA Aug. 19-26 so I hope to see you then if we can work it out. I'll pm you when the time gets closer. It will probably be my last trip to CA.
Patti - love the pictures! Looks like you guys had a wonderful time and you packed in a lot of adventure :D And you even saw cows - yay!!
NancyJo - yes, the shrimp & asparagus is yummy - I've made it a few times now. Maybe on some of the recipes you could freeze half for later - just a thought. And yes we will definitely get together in August. I'll probably take a day off during the week so I can visit with you. I think that will work best..... And yes, we are counting down the days until we head to VA to visit B. We had a nice long phone call with him yesterday and are trying to plan out some things to do while there. I'm excited (even though we've been there twice now) but not excited for the weather. Me & humidity just don't get along.....ugh.
Speaking of weather - yes, J's/S'smom I did make it out to the desert on Saturday for shopping with my friend. We actually went to the Desert Hills Premium Outlets which is right next door to the Cabazon Outlet. And the weather wasn't too bad! It was a little overcast and it was over 100* but my hubby said it was actually hotter at our house than it was out there lol. I didn't get much - it was definitely a "premium" outlet place. Lots of designer stuff and a little too "rich" for my taste lol. I did find a dress for my nephew's wedding (in Ohio) in November - now I just need shoes!

CoNavyMom, newsy post! So true, the time does fly. Congrats on the grandbabies! Aren't they just the best thing ever? Wow, the seasick part sounds horrible. You don't get that kind of movement on a carrier, at least when I was on it for the Friends and Family cruise there was no problem. You don't even feel the motion of the waves. Poor guy. Has it gotten better over time?
My sailor's in-laws are visiting him right now in CA and I am a little jealous. Oh well, I know they are having a wonderful time and my turn will come. And I'm glad they are getting the company. They miss everybody at home. <sigh> OK, whine is over. Did someone just say wine? :D
Just got back from Charleston where me and 10 of my family members were so excited to see my nuke graduate receive his congrats and diploma. Well the moved time of graduation and did not inform his whole group til time to start and Noone got to go including him. He has word very hard for thI'd Lil bit of recognition. ....I cried all day and the next day I was just mad. Does anyone have a name or number to express my anger and disbelief that they did not feel it was an important day for my son and his family. I flew from California to see this magical moment. These young men have feelings too.
nurserenee - Wow, I am sorry to hear that. I don't blame you for being upset since you traveled all that way ~ somebody really dropped the ball. I just don't understand how they could move it and not tell anyone....I do hope your son gets leave time and you all can spend some time together. I'm just so sorry that this happened to him and you and his fellow classmates :(
So much sad news today. It reminds us to be thankful for the good things. And nurserenee I can only imagine the feeling of complete frustration and maybe feeling like if you could only turn back the clock and have a replay where you actually find out in time. I'm so sorry that happened to you.
And J's/S'sMom my heart goes out to your son and all those on his sub. And to the families of those on the plane.
I can't imagine being on a sub for months. It would be so confining. The recruiters told my son NOT to volunteer to live on a sub. He is heading for an aircraft carrier.
Different people react differently to different situations. Many sailors have no problem being on a sub. I'm just so sad for the sailor who felt suicide was his best option, and for those sailors left behind to deal with his death. With the plane crash just preceding this, it does feel overwhelming. And I'm still not done with the Fitzgerald incident. Prayers being lifted!
Nurserenee, I'm broken-hearted with you. We treasure those moments with our kids as they work so hard to achieve a goal, and it feels almost as if it was all snatched away. All the anticipation and expense and then, nothing. But your sailor has achieved the goal and that hasn't changed. Bravo zulu to him, and to you, too, Mama, for your tremendous support!
Dear Fiona, she has lit up this morning after bad news. Thanks, PattiP!
Yes, it has been an emotional few weeks :( I'm sorry that this sailor felt this was his only option. J's/S'smom - definitely saying a prayer for everyone on your son's boat.
Patti - yes, thank you for sharing pictures of Fiona! Happy to see her swimming with her parentals! What a sweet girl she is <3
Let's do something fun ~ how many of us have pictures of our sailors when they were wee tykes in their little sailor suits (it's like they were destined to be in the Navy lol!)?. Let's share them.
Cejota - thanks for the tip about the luggage. Can you or anyone out there with direct experience regarding bringing laptops and phones help me out here. My son wants all his computer gear. The box is big and heavy - like 23.5" wide x 16" high x 5" deep. Can he take a box in addition to his luggage? And box and all (filled solid) is 20 lbs. Is this possible? Also, is the only way to get it to him to go to the airport? So, he can't take it back to base with him afterwards? Any suggestions/advice if you have been through this would be greatly appreciated!!!
Soccermom19 my suggestion regarding the box is just hold on to it and ship it to him at GC. My daughter was calling me from GC while we were still driving home from PIR with a list of things to send her. The only things I'd take to the airport would be things like a phone, laptop (if they just have to have it) and civilian underwear.
I agree with JayDee. They will have the big sea bag, they will be in uniform representing the Navy, and they will be tired. Even were there not rules about what they can and cannot carry, he does NOT want to stand out and NOBODY will help him with extra baggage when reporting. It is a chaotic situation and they have their hands full. A plain black laptop bag might be OK, but more than that and it will be worth the money to ship it.
Definitely send the box later - too much to deal with at the airport. He could handle his laptop and phone & a few civvies in his bag but that's probably it. Like WLH said - he doesn't want to stand out and he will definitely have his hands FULL!
B'sNukeMom - Cutey!! My ex-mother-in-law had a photo done of my nuke in a sailor suit when he was tiny. Not because she wanted him to join the Navy, after her own son's bad experience (his bad, not the Navy's), but because she just happened to find the cutest outfit. It is one of my most treasured photos. I will try to find it.
My sailor was a bit of a ham when he was little. When I was putting together the picture board for his high school graduation celebration I realized I had lots of pictures like these of him (non in a sailor suit - however I did realize that he has a picture of an aircraft carrier on his wall and when he was about 10 we got him about a 3 foot long aircraft carrier that he still has).

Let's do something fun ~ how many of us have pictures of our sailors when they were wee tykes in their little sailor suits (it's like they were destined to be in the Navy lol!)?. Let's share them.
Here's B when he was a little guy....

Thanks JayDee659. Do you by any chance know about timing of giving the sailors items? Is the only way to do that at the airport?

My daughter never had a sailor suit, but she loved her kitty and horses and I have a picture of her somewhere in biker leather.
