TessaNator, Here's what I did: we had a room near GL booked through Sunday and one booked for Friday night at O'Hare. We could cancel either with 24 hours notice and we decided that it was worth maybe losing one night at GL to spend time with our daughter. Turned out she flew out of Midway so we cancelled at O-Hare.
I guess I will keep both room reservations for Friday night & see how it goes. It's worth wasting a hotel one night To spend xtra several hours w/him....even if he is sleeping half that tome
Well, I'm back after being out of the loop for about 5 days, not to mention 7 pages of N4Ms! Thanks for the birthday wishes. It was a big one...60. I don't feel 60 but then you're only as old as you feel so I'm still a spring chicken. LOL
So much news! Congrats to all the new sailors and welcome all new moms. Keep the good news coming! PS COTwin, I just love that picture with the fish. Makes me laugh.
Such cute pics! I'm at work and don't have a lot of photos on hand and none with a sailor suit. Here's one of my son when he was about 2. J rang the doorbell and said Mama look at the kitty! I left the cat hanging long enough to get the camera. Despite this the cat never showed signs of oxygen deprivation and chose to stay with us. That was the best cat ever.
Have a great time off, B'sNuke! I'm trying to use up vaca also. My CA grandson is in town and I will be spending time with him. Happy dance! His other grandma gets him more but I will take what I can get!
Nicknukemom - reading your post about getting the box reminded me just how exciting it was getting that box. It felt like a little link to my sailor. Hang in there - soon your form letter will come and then at long last a real letter.
Hi all - Happy Tuesday! I missed you all yesterday, but I so enjoyed my "me" day lol! I did some house cleaning and then I tackled cleaning out my closet. Got 2 big bags to donate to the Goodwill and another big bag of goodies to give to my youngest sons GF. I was feeling accomplished! Then i put on my swimsuit and went outside and floated around my pool as my reward ~ ahhhh so relaxing!
NancyJo - I hope you had fun on your birthday and were able to take some "me" time!
I'm loving seeing all the pictures of your sailors - keep 'em coming.
Nicknukemom - you should be getting the letter soon! Keep writing letters and number them in the corner so as soon as you get the address you can mail them all. Your SR will be happy to get them ;D
I sent her a message last week and she was busy at work but said she would check in but I haven't heard anything.
I like to use the one-year test too! Now I need to go through hubby's closet - I should have just done it on my own, but thought I'd be nice and wait for him.
Thanks, J's/S's! You and I have about the same longevity here in Nuke Moms and I feel like you are an old friend. Old, not "OLD". LOL Yes, the birthday was outstanding. I will celebrate with the kids this coming weekend since I was so busy last weekend. My philosophy is birthdays should be celebrated for as long as possible.
B'sNuke that hairy dog cracks me up! Anyone living in humidity lives that all summer.
Nicknukemom, you getting the box brought back memories. I thought I was doing pretty good til that box came. Copious tears. I heard of some moms who didn't wash the clothes or anything just so they could go get an occasional sniff of their kiddo. One mom, I apologize if you are here and I have forgotten it was you, layed the clothes along the back of the couch and the cat snuggled and sniffed, finally settling in among them. No one ever forgets when "the box" comes.
Welcome new moms. Feel free to pipe up and ask questions any time. There's bound to be somebody with an answer. We need each other!
I won't be around for the next 2 days, loving on my grandson. See you on Friday.
Just got a text from B - it's raining HARD in VA and his car is flooded :( He said it's not fully submerged but it won't start and he's on the phone with USAA trying to get roadside assistance. Well that's a bummer.
I look like that dog all summer and most of the winter because of the static. If someone doesn't like how I look they can look at their phone (and they probably are anyway so who cares?).
I was home all last week with a staph infection in my leg. It was secondary to a yellow jacket sting. Seems like everything has cleared up and I'm certainly happy to be past it. I did get ambitious and cleaned up closet up. Got rid of one bag of clothing and one bag of shoes.
Be sure to read the pages to the right (10) under the member profiles, especially "Your Sailors Schedule Upon Arrival to GC" and make sure you familiarize yourself with OPSEC. The discussion forum above as lots of good info too (click on "view all"). And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have!
J's/S's Mom, thanks! I'm glad the staph infection is gone too, they're just scary. So far this year I've been bitten by a spider and stung by the yellow jacket. We live in the country so stuff happens but it's a bit much this year.
It's my understanding that the jelly fish sting has healed. Last time she called she was all excited because she'd passed her TDL (or is it TLD) and was able to enter the engine room. She was also getting ready to stand her first watch. Not heard from her since so I'm guessing all went well.
It's hot here too, but not as hot as out west - mid 90's. I was so bold that I text my neighbor with a pool and invited myself over. They were out to dinner but told us to help ourselves so my husband and I enjoyed a refreshing dip last night - ah, heaven!
JayDee - so glad the staph infection is gone. That could have ended up not well..... Nice that your neighbors let you use their pool - yes they are very refreshing! TLD stands for Thermoluminescent dosimeter - it measures the radiation that they are exposed to - the nukes have to wear them at all times in the engine room.
WonderGeekWoman - I was with the understanding that A school grad (and Power and Proto) are always on Friday's. But I think I've heard maybe once or twice where due to extenuating circumstances they may have changed them. I would double check though just to be safe.
I took this picture when we toured my sons ship. It's a poster they have on the door outside the engine room. He said that's the reminder - you always "tap" your TLD before going in so you know you have it on.
It's not looking too good on my sons car. I guess while he was stuck in the massive flood/puddle a big truck came roaring through and he said it was like in slow motion - the water just rolled up over the hood of his car in a big wave :( They towed it to the dealer and the adjuster will be out tomorrow. He went by this morning and the mechanic said the air filter is soaked and that from what he's seen with insurance that 99% of the time they total out the car. But he won't know for sure until tomorrow. Trying to look at his options - just a huge inconvenience right now since he's only working part time and going to school on his GI Bill. Ugh
Thanks B'sNukeMom, I guess it's TLD but I'm sure I'll get it backwards again! We have so many acronyms with Ski Patrol that I don't think my brain is accepting new ones!
103 ugh. Even with dry heat that's way too warm for me. Give me snow! I walked to lunch and back and my phone says it's 88 but feels like 89. Wonderful.
I don't know if she's blazing through anything but she's making forward progress and that's sufficient.
alot of what I'm reading gives me a feeling that our boys may not be loved by the rest of the guys. I don't understand how? Their smart, handsome and good at everything. Jealous much
TessaNator - we are in CA and Thursday was always our day to receive letters from boot camp. Fingers crossed yours comes tomorrow!
Oh no Patti! I sure hope the antibiotics help.
B texted me earlier today and said the adjuster showed up today (a day early!) and said the engine is completely locked up so most likely they will total it. But she still has to put together an estimate to fix and then if they do declare it a total loss someone will contact him in about 2 business days. So we shall see what happens..... He had sent me a picture where he was stuck and it was pouring - he said it was literally like a monsoon - and by the time the tow truck showed up all the water had dissipated.
The Nukes have a very intense school, and their job is very tough and dangerous. I am hoping all the guys will look up to them. I hope for the best for our Nukes. I highly respect anyone going into that field.
PattiP, you really need to talk to the owner of the puppy and get a copy of its rabies vaccine. I hope you heal quickly but you need to be on top of this.
Patti - how's the hand doing? I agree with JayDee, you should make sure that "Cujo" is up to date on his shots! I hope you heal quickly with this.....
So B is looking for another ride now. I posted on some of my VA FB pages and he posted it on his FB page and there's actually some options out there. He has a buddy from his old ship that is selling a truck and another mom told me her son will be heading to Japan and he's most likely selling his truck. So maybe when we are there for vacation in a couple weeks we'll be looking at cars with him.....yay

I am so glad so many nukes in his division. I know they will stand by each other all thru A school, and some will be on same ship!
I've read studies that say that the intelligence is passed on the female side and the male determines sex. So if you have a boy, that's dad's doing and if he's smart then it's your doing.
JayDee 659- Ha, I will pass that on to his DAD! He will croak! Thanks, I was a science major, can't get enough of Science! All those atoms, positive and negative charges excite me!
And I want that good looking smart sweet son of mine to find a good woman and give me some GRANDBABIES already!
TessaNator my sons division and brother division in boot camp were almost 1/2 nukes. His roomate at Goose Creek and at least 3 other guys that he hangs out with a lot were all in his division at boot camp.

Here are my twin sailors as kids.
My nuke one is the one with brown hair. The Red head is an IT.
The IT is now out of the navy and here he is in Alaska. He is working on a commercial fishing boat.
