TessaNator being a cross country runner will no doubt serve your son well in boot camp.

The state championship game I was referring to was rather an epic game - we were not actually there but were listening to it on the radio - we heard later that lots of people from both schools had already left - from our school to drown their sorrows and from Camas to celebrate because we were down by 2 touchdowns with a minute and 5 seconds left of the game.  Now sometimes if were listening to or watching even an NFL game and the team we're rooting for is way behind at almost the end of the game we find ourselves saying 'come on, pull a Chiawanna'.  :)  Wish I could take some credit for it but I can't - not even my son can.

My goodness! As usual a newsy bunch! It occurred to me as I drove to work today that I didn't get a photo with my grandson! Maybe when I see him Wednesday. We had such a good time. I'm not a "sun" person and tend to avoid it. So Wed. afternoon was spent at the pool with him and my daughter's 5 kids. I have a bit of sunburn, which was totally worth it considering all the fun. My babies are water lovers. Ironic since we live in land-locked Nebraska. Thank goodness for pools!

JayDee, that staph is scary! Glad it's clearing up. A guy at work got staph from a piece of equipment at the gym. Crazy how that happens, and a bit dangerous.

PattiP, so glad your box to the Nimitz made it and kudos for sending it. I'm sad for the letters and boxes that are sitting on the ocean floor from the dropped load.

B'sNuke, fingers crossed for B's car. Bummer! Not what he needs right now for sure. Glad you will be out there soon. It sounds like he needs some of Mama's hugs.

Nicknukemom, sometimes it's true our nukes aren't liked but that's a loss for the other people. If our nukes are anything like their mamas here, they are rock stars. Anyway most of the time everybody gets along just fine.

Weekend just around the corner. Yahoo!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Friday!

NancyJo - so glad you are having fun with the grandkids!  It's especially nice that your grandson was able to come for a visit.

I'm going to be hanging by my pool again this weekend. Taking another 3 day weekend so I'll be off Monday ;D  And of course I'm counting down the days until we head to VA!

Got my RED on today :)

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Welcome to our newest members ~ BeeWeaver and Renee!  Feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Attention: If any of the Nukes here are ship 12, Div 265.....My son stated in his letter yesterday that he is pretty sure they will be calling home tomorrow morning!  Be ready!

  • Esti'sMom

Well Nuke Moms...I thought getting the injured call was hard. Last night, got the "I'm being separated" call. No words can even express the roller coaster of emotion. :( I'm still in disbelief. She said it's because of having PTSD, due to an emotional event when she was young she never fully recovered from... which has caused her to be stressed and depressed. And I'm sure being injured only adds to this. :(
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Oh Esti'sMom - I am so so sorry to hear this.  It might be possible that she can come home, get a waiver for it and re-enlist after 6 months...Of course the main thing is for her to be able to recover from the emotional event.  Everything happens for a reason - remind her of that.  She may not see it now but she will.  Tell her to stay strong.  Hugs to you and her {{NMH}}

  • Esti'sMom

Thank you J's/S'smom. I'm trying to see rhe good in this.
  • Esti'sMom

Thank you B'sNukeMom. I will be sure to let her know. I'm hoping she'll be able to call Sunday, so I can reassure her.
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

I like the post about sex passed on thru dad, smarts from Mom.

I have a sister who is a math wiz and her son was given a GED test as a joke, because he was so smart and skipped several grades, when he was 10. He passed with flying colors. Graduated Architectural Engineering at 14 or 15.

My son discovered in BC his long legs and got into the running. When he went to GC for school he would run for stress relief.

  • Esti'sMom

Thank you PattiP. I am trusting in God, and know there is some reason for this happening... And what that is, we'll have to wait and see. :)
  • submomIII

Got a call at 5:30 am from my Nuke, wanting to talk to his sister.  She had maybe spent the night at her cousins, and when I groggily checked the house to see if she was home, they were both in the living room!  He had asked her to pick him up from the airport - and is home for two weeks!!  YAY!!!

  • ProudOfK

Submomill - that sounds like the best surprise ever!  Enjoy your time!  Two weeks - that's awesome!

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Esti'sMom I am so sorry to read your post. I will pray for your daughter. I know you will be there for her.

    Submomell, what a fabulous surprise.

  • Esti'sMom

    Thank you CO-TwinSalorsMom! :)
    SubmomIll, what a wonderful surprise!
  • TessaNator⚓️

got a real phone call early this morning, my nuke is doing well in BC.  Said he feels like he has been there a long time, but i reminded him he is almost 1/2 done.  Lack of enough sleep was his only complaint.

  • NickSydmom

So happy for you tessanator. I'm still waiting and going crazy.
  • JayDee659

J's/S's mom it's 95 here, feels like 101. I'm guessing Pattip has similar weather. I worked out at the gym, walked the dogs then came inside. Going to see "Mama Mia" at the theater with some friends tonight. Just trying to stay cool until then.

Got an email from my sailor today. I'll be glad when she's back on land!
  • JayDee659

Ah, don't feel bad. Right now hubby and I are on the love seat watching a movie with dogs and cats on our laps. Not looking forward to heading out shortly even though I'm excited to see the play.
  • KAM Mom

Headed back to GC this afternoon and then my nuke flys out on Moday headed to his ship and first deployment.  He will be greatly missed.  My last words in parting "Please communicate with someone even if it is not me....brothers, sisters, friends.....". You all know that the mother is usually the last one to know....but that is OK just as long as i hear in some way.   I am still very sad at the loss of Mike, but am continuing with routine and will begin teaching ukulele in September to the senior citizens.  We have a wedding for my youngest daughter in December and a baby coming for my oldest daughter in January.....so very much to look forward to.  I have joined the Japan moms group too.  More later.  Thanks for your support.

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Kam so good to hear from you. Hang in there, your son I pray will be in contact with you. Is he sub or carrier?

Also grief has it's own timing. You will have ups and downs for years to come, but it does get better.

  • jberg12

Just returned yesterday from my son's PIR. What an amazing, hectic, exhausting weekend. My son arrived in Goose Creek late Saturday afternoon, and starts in-doc today. His orders say classes start on 2 August, but he's been told to ignore that date. He was put in the oldest barracks, with a bunk bed and a very small room, and apparently a very messy roommate that he is already worried about. I laugh to myself at this, as neatness has never been his strength.

There were close to 50 Nukes that graduated with him, but only 8 were cleared to leave for A school. The rest were left in Great Lakes in THU (temporary holdover unit) waiting for additional signatures from medical I believe. Anyone have a similar experience? Apparently there are NUKES in THU right now that have been there for over 2 months, and are concerned about losing their rating. I'm grateful my son has moved on, but I'm worried about his friends that he thought he would be moving through school with.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Esti'sMom, my heart goes out to you. I have some PTSD in my family and know what a challenge that is for kids. They grow up but that doesn't mean it disappears. Everyone here is right, though. Once the shock of a bad event passes, the light gets better. What this means for her might be that she is avoiding something worse later on. The stress of being a nuke is not conducive to PTSD. She gave it a good shot and this might be a blessing in disguise. Sometimes when it seems that God is not answering a prayer, it's only that He knows better what we need. My prayers are behind you.

I share the dismay at the hot weather. Yikes! 100+ heat index and high humidity are the worst. Finally getting a little cooler here in NE. Today will only be in the mid-80's. Thank goodness! For relief I've been envisioning snow angels. :D

submom, give that sailor extra hugs for all of us. How wonderful! These 2 wks will fly by.

TessaNator, lack of sleep is one of the common denominators for our nukes. Your sailor will get used to it. They learn to value rack time.

JayDee, how great to have heard from Nukette. Probably not sufficiently for you but they do their best. They are very busy on their jobs and I guess I found that surprising but why I did I do not know. Add that to a limited window to communicate and it seems like forever between contacts. Hang in there, Mama, she's seeing the world and it's all OK.

KAM, good to hear from you! What wonderful things are happening in your family. You know that your husband is sharing all this with you from heaven. Will this be your first grandchild? Grandchildren are the best thing ever!!

jberg, PIR is awesome! Glad you were able to experience it. I don't know about THU; maybe someone else can help you here.

Have a great week, Sea Sisters!

  • WonderGeekWoman

jberg12 - My son was kept in THU for 6 weeks for medical, too. He didn't lose his rating. He was extremely bored, but it was fine. His wasn't just a paperwork thing, he had swollen lymph nodes and they had to figure out why before sending him on. Amazing that they have so many kept back this time! Maybe the guys that do the paperwork took a vacation. ;)

  • Soccer Mom

jberg12- My son is one that was left behind. :(   From what I understand, there are 150 NUKES total that need their medical signed off on.  One guy has been THU for three months.  Each day when the medical ombudsman went to visit, the doc would tell them to come back the next day and the following day, the same story.  So, the only thing holding this group back,  that I am aware of is that the doctor hasn't signed the paperwork for them to move forward.  My son and the others are very frustrated and want to move forward, as you can imagine.  They only have so many jobs for the THU group to do, and with 150 NUKES alone in THU, that means a lot of down time.

  • Esti'sMom

NancyJo, I really appreciate it. I'm feeling better about it then I was. Making sure to be positive and encouraging to her.

I actually got a call from her earlier today. :) She sounded pretty good. She did say there are a lot of people in SEPS right now (about 700... 200 of them are female), due to holidays and such. Also, that it could be up to 2 months until she is separated. Praying that it won't be that long... but I know things will eventually work out. :)
  • WonderGeekWoman

The humidity here has been horrendous, making the Real Feel so much worse than the actual temperature. That and the stagnant air makes me miss the desert...but not the dust or fires.

SoccerMom - Yes, the boredom is pretty bad for them in THU, I think especially hard on our brainy nukes who need so much intellectual stimulation.

TessaNator - They really break them down with the lack of sleep, but at least they're mostly forgiving when they fall asleep while doing everything else. I think they enjoy startling them awake, though. :)
I grew up in the Vancouver area. Lake Oswego sure is a nice place. How are you liking Camas so far?

B'sNukeMom - Yeah, I'll have him double check. He said 9/27 but that's Wednesday. If it is, I might be able to squeeze it in before flying to help his grandma that weekend. If it's Friday, I definitely can't go. He says he's fine with that. I almost wish he weren't so stoic and stern. I know that does serve him well where he's at right now, but I always worry that it's just a front but he's hurting inside. He says to stop worrying about it, so I guess I have to stop worrying about it! LOL

KAM - Yes, good to hear from you. Sounds like you have some amazing new adventures coming. I'm sorry Mike won't be there physically to experience them with you all, but I know you'll feel him there. NMHs!!

Esti'sMom - so sad with you and your daughter! She'll do great things in a different arena! Thank her for her effort in serving our country! NMHs!!

submomIII - Eeeeeee! So exciting!!! I love hearing surprise-boots-in-the-house stories!

I love all the little sailor pics!! ProudofK, hilarious coincidence that he has an aircraft carrier?

  • MrsKatF

My son is a Nuke from 072117 PIR held back as well.  He is temporaily assigned as an RTC staffer, and is holding Watch positions as assigned.  Awaiting a doc's signature.  According to him, the nearly 150 members of Ship 6 THU represent legal holding, submariners, Nukes, delayed orders, etc... a variety of issues.

  • WonderGeekWoman

Finally found my little sailor's picture! My ex got out of the Navy (somehow honorably) after less than 2 years. His mom found this little suit and couldn't resist it, even though she had no desire for my son to try the Navy, after her son's experience (his bad, not the Navy's). She called me and said, "I just need to get this picture done because the outfit is just too cute." I couldn't resist it, either. :D

  • Pooh'sMom

    WonderGeekWoman
THIS PHOTO IS AMAZING!  So glad you shared it!

  • WonderGeekWoman

Thanks Pooh'sMom! It makes me laugh with joy every single time I look at it.

  • NickSydmom

    Super cute picture
  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

I love it too. It's the expression on his face that makes it. That's a flirt if I ever saw one. LOL

  • WonderGeekWoman

Oh goodness, yes, he was a huge flirt!!

  • Qenime

My son was put in THU for a few weeks after PIR 6/16/2017, also for "medical" - they found out that in 2007 he had a prescription for albuterol nebulizer, so they had to make sure that he did not have asthma (he had a bad case of viral bronchitis at the time).  I thought it was kind of funny that they had just run him all over boot camp for 8 weeks in asthma-allergy hell Chicago without a single problem, and couldn't tell that he did not have asthma.  They had to get a letter from his doctor, which they received the week of PIR, but the boot camp doctor sis not sign off for weeks... probably because of the backlog of medical holds!  Also, I think this has a lot to do with the needs of the Navy training pipeline; they would rather hold them at Great Lakes then take up space at Goose Creek.

  • Rose

My son was also held in THU after PIR for VERY slight anemia. He said many of the med holds are often nukes and other "special" groups (SEALS? others?) that require a lot of expensive training. Apparently these people have more medical hoops to jump through than some of the other Sailors. I haven't verified that information, but I guess it could be true. My son was there a month taking iron before they sent him to GC. Coincidentally, he caught up with everyone from his same PIR by the time Power School started. I'm sorry so many people have been there so long - I know it isn't a fun place to hang out.

  • TessaNator⚓️

WonderGeekoman-Camas if fine, but we are wayyy on top of Livingston Mountain....its at least 30 min anywhere, even just to buy a lemon at the store.   Not looking forward to getting snowed in this winter.  But the view of Mt. Hood is incredible, and its so quiet up here.

Its only temporary, we are empty nesters now so going to sell and moving to Hawaii.  So my commute to get a lemon will be 50 feet to pick off my tree....and no more cold weather!

My son will love to go on leave and bring his buddies to Hawaii for a visit!

  • TessaNator⚓️

Geeez, hope my Nuke can get thru and off to Nuke school.  They wear them ragged, and I think their immune system has taken a hit about the time to go off to school. I am guessing they are a likely host for any germ or virus that may come their way.

  • TessaNator⚓️

Dug these old pic's out from 1980's. I was in college, went to Spring break Virgin Islands.  Met some super amazing officers of the USS Roosevelt. They invited us aboard the Aircraft carrier and baked me a B-day cake!
We toured many areas of ship, super cool!  My dad was a Sailor, so this was the BEST!They were such gentleman! Then they took me golfing! Best birthday EVER!

    More pics to follow

  • TessaNator⚓️

The best and most memorable B-day of my life! Thank you US Navy!

  • ProudOfK

WonderGeekWoman - very cute picture of your little guy - now a grown up sailor.

Interesting discussion of all the Nukes on medical hold - it does seem a little odd that there are so many on medical hold.

So far I couldn't be prouder of my sailor.  The thought that came to me at PIR is 'He's got this' and so far he seems to be bearing that out.

I enjoy all of your post - I check on them on my phone though out the day and many times I think - oh I want to respond to this or that and then by the time I'm home and able to respond I've forgotten what I was planning to respond to.  Appreciate you all!!

  • NickSydmom

I tried to book a room at Navy lodge, and couldn't the site asked for my user id. I don't have an account so I tried my e-mail. It didn't work. I couldn't find anywhere on the site to sign up for an account. Does anyone know how this works?
  • Familyof6

I have been reading a lot about medical holds for the Nuke program. Is this common? And it reads that much have been due to medical? I am fairly new to all of this. Are their holds for other reasons? Is the program just that full?
  • TessaNator⚓️

Nicknukemom- The website for Navy Lodge does not work for booking rooms.  I tried several times, just called them and booked 2 weeks ago.  YOu will have to call them

  • TessaNator⚓️

FAmilyof6- I think its something to look into.  My guess is there is a virus or something contagious they are watching/waiting.

  • Christie_Okie

What's the Navy Lodge phone number?
  • Mammagoose

If the holds are due to the program being that full and not a medical cause, what are the chances that our nukes will lose their jobs?
  • jberg12

From my understanding, at least for the 21 July PIR, the holds are not due to medical issues, but rather they are waiting on a signature on some medical form. Those in THU are not sick, but somehow the medical personnel messed up the paperwork. That's why there are so many on hold.

  • Familyof6

I couldn't even hazard a guess but am only hoping that it is due to a paperwork glitch. I can't imagine that the number of people that are being held are all sick. I certainly hope that they would keep their rating.
