Ugh, we are in the midst of a heat wave here in the PNW. Forecast for today 107, tomorrow 108! We are not used to this kind of heat. Most people (including me) have no a/c. It's dangerous when it gets this hot. Send cooling thoughts our way!!
Sitting here at Baltimore/Washington waiting for our last flight to Norfolk - almost there!
BoyWonderMom - sorry we won't be able to meet up. Maybe some other time.
PacNWMom - yikes that's horrible heat for you. I hope it doesn't last. We got a horrible rain storm at my work yesterday. Lasted about 40 minutes - flooded our lunch room. Before it hit the temp was 103. After it dropped to 76! It was crazy. Knocked down 3 trees too. We don't normally get storms like that in our area of SoCal.
SailorsLIMom - funny story lol
CLO - glad your son got his paperwork approved & is heading to GC. Now the fun begins!
Just wanted to say I meet a wonderful Nuke mom from Alabama at Stone Mountain. Wish I would have gotten your name. I am not usually on the Nuke mom's anymore. My son left week 9 of Power School. God always has a plan. He is a second class Navy Diver and has also received his dolphins. This site is such a blessing to Moms.
Charleston is great. The SC Aquarium is a good visit. We love the horse-drawn carriage tours and the restaurants have fantastic food. While in this neck of the woods, if driving, the zoo in Columbia is worth checking out (and they have a little splash park for little kids so bring your suits). If water parks are more your thing, there's a great one in Charleston. I can't get our ds to go but maybe other families would be interested.) It's right near a stellar campground so you can camp, play, and visit if you want. (Note: the solar eclipse is passing right over Charleston the 21st. Traffic will be insane and motels are sold out.)
The USS Yorktown is a great visit, esp in the company of your ds or dd. It is interesting hearing things from their perspective.
Has anyone ever heard of this? My son was one of the many recent Nukes that were on hold in GL due to the doctor failing to sign the paperwork. He was given his duties at the end of July and flew to Goose Creek on Tuesday, August 1st. Now, he will be waiting for awhile (he is an MM) because there were some clearance issues with the new Nukes coming in, so all the MM's, except one, were changed to EM or ET. The one was my son. When he applied to the Navy, there was a hiccup (after they told him he would leave for boot camp on April 21 or 22) because we adopted a child from out of the country and the FBI didn't give him clearance to join the Navy afterall. Anywho, they immediately all kind of checks on our family and my son left at the end of May instead. Because of this hiccup, he was the only one with full clearance and will stay an MM and probably and has to wait until 19 other MM's arrive before he can start. What an interesting ride it has been! The upside is that we can go visit him and he has time to spend with us....no classes.
Soccer Mom sounds like you've been introduced to the ways of the Navy early. Just remember all things for a reason and always be flexible. What was that - Semper Gumbi? Any date that my daughter gives me, I write down as a target date and don't get too hung up on it.
My son is also a MM in GC. He arrived Thursday last week. He had PIR on 7/21 and was on hold due to the medical form also. He said he will start in a week or two.
Welcome, new moms! Glad to have you aboard. Any and all questions and concerns are welcome here.
That paperwork snafu in GL seems to have caused quite a bit of havoc. I imagine someone's backside is a bit tender after all that. Oh dear.
Soccer Mom, congratulations on the new addition to your family! I wish you every blessing. Hang in there with your sailor. JayDee is right. Everything is needs of the navy and timeline for the navy. We veterans have learned that lesson.
B'sNuke, thanks for checking in. It's not the same around here without you. So glad you got to meet another nuke mom. Those times are the best. Fingers crossed the weather cooperates. They call her Mother Nature but sometimes she doesn't behave like a mother. Well, maybe a grumpy mother.
NancyJo, I've used the IP twice. The first time I used it to cook some frozen chicken breasts and it worked like a charm. Last night I used it to cook meat loaf. I used an official IP recipe and followed the directions to a T. When I opened the pot the meat loaf was still so rare that it was mooing! :( Thank goodness for the FB group, I posted a question asking if I should finish it in the oven or put it back in the pot and got an instant reply telling me to put it back into the pot. It came out fine but by then I had to re-heat my mashed potatoes and my bread was cooling down. It was all so perfectly timed, until my meat loaf failed. I'm a little nervous about trying anything else, now I'm worried that if IP doesn't have a better grip on times then the recipes from other sources will be iffy.
Christie_Okie - this is from the page to the right "Navy Nuclear Field Program Description: Career Opportunities. Three Navy job specialties, called “ratings”, are included in the NF community: Machinist’s Mate (MM), Electrician’s Mate (EM), and Electronics Technician (ET). The rating in which a NF candidate is trained is determined at the Recruit Training Center.
TessaNator, are you trying to start a rumble? :D My sailor is MM and very glad of it. They each find their own fit.
Bummer about the meat loaf, JayDee. I did hard boiled eggs, chicken stew, asparagus and shrimp, teriyaki chicken, and spaghetti. The spaghetti turned out a little dry but I believe it was because I didn't use spaghetti; I used shells. The rest was great. Don't give up!
My daughter is an MM also and we're very proud of her but most importantly she's doing what she loves. The job cannot be done by one rating alone. Furthermore, not everyone is cut for every job. I mean, not everyone is cut out to do my job and I certainly could not and would not want some of the jobs in my company.
Nancy Jo, I found a fried rice recipe that I may try when we run out of meatloaf. With just two of us I should have made a smaller one, but was trying to follow directions so I wouldn't mess it up. HA!
JayDee, therein lies my problem. I am a single and single or 2-servings recipes are hard to find. I find myself eating the same thing for a few days in a row unless I freeze. Not all food freezes well. But I'm still plugging along.
I've got boots in the house! My son surprised me and got home late Friday night. He's on his break between summer and fall terms. SO happy to have him here.
Rest assured I'm giving and getting hugs for all my sea sisters! Happy Mama Bear
All this talk about the IP has me thinking maybe I should get one. I do not enjoy cooking, so a 1 pot, super simple solution is appealing. My oldest kiddo is planning to move out of my house soon and I'll be living alone for the first time ever. Maybe the IP will be a way to make sure I don't eat cereal or take out food every night.
Nancy Jo- I about peed my pants when you asked TessaNator if she was trying to start a rumble. You ladies crack me up! I really thought I would have nothing in common with moms from the coasts. But deep down we all love and support our kids with a fierceness no man dare test!..... now what should I bring to the rumble? LOL
Hey all, I'm new to this group. My son arrived Saturday and had his PIR on Friday. He is an ET and will start classes soon. Just sent him a bunch of stuff via UPS. We are thinking of visiting him in September but are worried it will cause a distraction from his school work. Luv to know what you experienced moms know and am very thankful for this site.
ProudNukemom you'll probably want to wait until he phases up, they seem to be more comfortable going out in their civvies. It usually takes a couple weeks to get those privileges.
We plan to visit our daughter at GC in early September. She's phased up (arrived at end of June), but even before that, she got some leave. Do check with your son and see what kind of free time he will have. She says this will be a real morale booster and we're all looking forward to it. Hope the Sailors get good seats for the eclipse--Charleston is the real hot spot for that!

soccermom: I don't know, this just came from a 19 yr old. He said something about salary after bachelors degree completed. I think it 90-100K out in real world. The recruiter told him to go for the ET, that's all I know.
It's not more 'important', all the nuke jobs are dependent on each other to make it all 'work'.
