When is his PIR? I haven't heard from my son on liberty, but on the boot camp page they said the nukes fly out Saturday morning and everyone else gets leave. I would love to see him for longer.
His PIR is Sept 15th. This was just our first call and he did not say who told him that these would be the arrangements. I am sure it was bad information but it doesn't keep me from hoping for one more day. Lol
From what I see on this blog and heard at PIR, the nukes leave for GC on Saturday except in special circumstances, such as a holiday. You can get a lot of information from Sarge's pdf at http://www.mynavytaxi.com/files/118788991.pdf. Plus, Sarge is reachable by phone (number is on the document), and more than happy to help you out--he clarified the details of the midnight airport meeting 7 weeks ago, and was spot-on. Best to call him when you are feeling relatively calm, though--I could tell MomHysteria (which i had, bigtime) wasn't improving our communication. ;)
ADMIN: Seems like (from what I read/hear) most nukes need xtra medical clearance to go to GC, a lg. % go to THU. Can you verify a baseline % of how many nukes in THU? I hear a lot of moms saying their Nukes stuck in THU due to back up of medics behind on signing off on medical release forms......
My son did not fly out to GC until Sunday (and some had to wait until Monday his PIR weekend) - but we did not find out until we got to PIR. He did not know before that. The main reason was due to being unable to get room on the flights as it was spring break time (March). But the previous weeks all flew out on Saturday. It all depends on where they can get room on the flights.
For all you moms with kids in DEP, the date they originally get to leave for boot camp in the beginning always seems like forever away but they will frequently get a call that says a spot has opened up and they can leave early. Your child will need to be prepared for that and think in advance about whether or not they want to do that. My son opted to not leave early because he had made all kinds of plans to say goodbye with parties and whatnot and that decision did not impair his career with the navy in any way. Some are so anxious to get going that they jump at the chance of an earlier leave date. Just a heads up for you all and you might suggest to your kid in DEP that they need to think about that..
As far as leaving after PIR, the big snafu with medical checkoff paperwork that happened recently is uncommon. Most of the time new sailors will fly out on Saturday. There are the occasional sailors that fly out Sunday but it's all about availability of flights and can't be planned on our end. Sorry, Moms, that's Navy life.
J's/S's mom is, as usual, the voice of reason. I also watched Guam's governor give his citizens a calm address about the situation. In spite of the political divisiveness that exists right now in our country, our military is solid. Of course we worry. We're moms after all. But our job is to be cheerleader so when I talk to my son I don't dwell on that stuff. We talk and laugh and that's what he needs from me. He's smart enough to know reality and from me needs to know Mama loves him and is always there. Don't you all miis B'sNuke? I know she's having a great time but I'll be glad when she's back. Have a great week, Sea Sisters!
NancyJo, my daughter and I were discussing NK and I asked her if they were safe. Her comment "mom I'm on a giant floating city, I'm super safe". She had no hesitation and thought I was silly. I love our brave children!
Despite that I will be glad when she's back here. I think this thing will blow over and I hope I'm right. I've also realized that there are a lot of people in this country who take everything at face value and do not look into the facts before reacting. Social Media may be one of those things we wish we could dis-invent...
My son has been in Nuclear 'A' school for about 4 weeks now. He is busy with studying and his new life .But he has been very quiet about the process. I understand he has so many hours to study. Any other moms have any comments.
Beagle Lover, quiet isn't bad. You know what they say, no news is good news. They have mandatory study hours that can keep them very busy. When they're done they just want to relax and sleep. When my daughter was in A School she spent 2 weeks closing out the watch in the Rickover so she was out super late.
I had one request of my daughter and that was that she text me at least once a week and say "hi I'm fine". She did (although it was usually more often). In turn I would respond with a short "love you" but did not try to take the opportunity to get into a long conversation. I think that alone helped because she didn't have to worry that I was going to pump her for information or expect to talk for long periods. Even now that she's at sea I get an email at least weekly, sometimes daily as her schedule allows.
I get texts from our daughter quite often, but they are usually very to-the-point about something she doesn't have time to find out on her own. They are very, very busy, and the study hours are regulated, not just how many, but the times when they have to study. This schedule changes over time and according to how they are doing. They have tests at regular intervals, along with their other duties. Daughter has been there since June 23, close to the time your son's been there. I keep my answers short and sweet. Emoticons are my friend!

Meanwhile, I'm coming to CA on Saturday so maybe you can carve out a little time for me in the next week. I'm there Saturday through Saturday. Hope it works out!
TessaNator - I love Oregon. :D What part are you in? We are over on the coast. My son is a MM. He graduated A School last Friday. Next is Power School which he doesn't have a start date for yet. He loves what he is learning so far and really looking forward to Prototype. School varies depending on your Rate. I think my son's is a total of 18mo.
I know others have said something like this before but my son is a jerk. UGH!! He's home for 10 days and I got travel time and about 1hr. GRR!! I get that he misses his friends but what about the rest of us? We drove 4hrs to pick him up then another 5 to get to my IL's (my FIL died last week). The service was Monday which he showed up late for. You'd think my child would want to spend some time with family but nope. He went to the beach and got a tattoo instead. I know he'll grow up but this was unexceptionable in my book.
Hi all - just checking in. Still swamped at work. We had a rather serious injury here at work while I was on vacation so I've been dealing with all of that :(
NancyJo - I'm hoping we can work something out. It's hectic here but I really want to meet up with you. The weekends out - we are having a bday pool party at our house this Sunday for our youngest so my weekend is booked. Saturday I need to get everything in order and that's when you come in anyhow. The next Saturday won't work cuz you leave then. I'm hoping maybe Monday or Tuesday I can take off work & we can meet.....I'll message you when I get some time!
Different kids have different needs and maturity levels. There's no predicting. I'm sorry OR_NavyMom. A lot of the time the navy slaps some sense into them. That might still happen. Be patient. He knows you are there and not going anywhere. There's a lot to be said for that. hugs>>
Hello ladies, my SR graduates in two weeks. I have a room at Navy Lodge. On the web site it says he has to sign us in. Do we get to see him before PIR? How does this work?
Nicknukemom - no you won't see your son before PIR. They must make some exception at the Navy Lodge for PIR but I'm not positive how it works - anyone else?
Nicknukemom - You made the reservation in your SR's name, right? They just check you in under his name and look at your ID. We stayed there, too. Our SR even has a different last name, so it's super easy.
Or-Navymom: We were in Lake Oswego the last 30 yrs, raised my son there because of the stellar school system. Boy, did I pay a ton in property taxes tho!
My kiddo 19, graduates Sept. 1, then off to GC to be a Nuke.
Be patient, you kid just finding himself. They become distant when they pull away. Even a bit awnry. But, you are his mom, he will come around. We are empty nesters of 3 kids now, we got 2 puppies to love. They are busy and messy, but don't talk back and ask for gas money!
We are building our retirement home in Maui, my son will definately come visit when he has breaks from school, and we have told him to bring a friend or a GF. We will have no problem getting our kids to visit in Hawaii!
We stayed at Navy Lodge for my son's PIR in July. They make an exception, you just have to give them your SR's name, no need for them to sign you in. We enjoyed staying there with all of the other Navy families attending PIR.
Nicknukemom - we also stayed at the Navy Lodge and loved it; they could not have been any nicer to all the parents/kids. We also made sure to go to the Meet n Greet the nite before which was amazing. In fact we used Sarge's taxi services from the airport to the Lodge and our driver was there during our stay to be there if we needed him. Great service!
We also went to Sarge's Meet N Greet years ago and used his taxi services. I highly recommend him ~ great guy.
Nicknukemom - I believe it's the Air Force (or maybe Army) that has a family day before their Boot Camp grad where everyone gets together. It would be nice if the Navy did that too but nope, you gotta wait until those big doors roll up to see them!
