Nicknukemom - I am sorry your son did not get the job preference he wanted, that can be disappointing. Looking at the classes the EM's and ET's will have a lot of similar subjects. I don't know much though about how the jobs differ. I haven't spent a lot of time learning more about them yet though.
TessaNator⚓️ - I went hunting and it looks like they just don't have the actual video uploaded yet. I don't recall on our PIR how long it took, but I know it was there on Monday 8/28. You however are dealing with a Federal Holiday today and the video is put out by the DOD, so they may just be a little slower getting yours posted. Sorry- I know that can be frustrating, I have watched ours about 3 - 4 times, now, trying to share the link and times my sailor showed up with family.
Hi Moms! I hope you all had a great long weekend, The weather was nice here in NE but we have a smokey haze from the fires in the west. Those poor people! Fire and water are taking their toll on our country these days.
ProudofK, we are a family here though not of blood. We are Sea Sisters supporting our kids. It's a nice feeling.
Mammagoose, I have quit watching military movies while my son is in the navy. I also love documentaries but have quit watching anything about the middle east. My Mother's Heart just can't take it. But I know the sailors seem to like those movies.
KAM, this is a little different but we love the Great British Bake-Off but that may be on Hulu. We don't have cable either but don't mind the relative low cost of Netflix and Hulu, and as an Amazon Prime member we can watch that too. The Bake-Off is good because unlike American cooking shows the British are witty and kind. We really enjoy this show.
It was so nice having yesterday off but now it's back to the grind. Have a great week, Sisters!
Thanks NancyJo, weather was nice here in FL also, got out in the boat, hung out with family, great long weekend!! - now keeping an eye on Irma, hoping for the best :)
I hope everyone was able to enjoy a nice day off yesterday. My husband and I worked in the backyard and boy do I feel it today lol! We were still feeling some of our heat wave we've been having for the last week but it looks like it's finally cooling down a bit. The pool sure felt good after all the yardwork :)
Thinking of you KAM & sending hugs & prayers your way. Glad your sailor is getting settled in Japan.
I don't like watching military movies - my husband likes to watch the military channel & I always have him change it or I have to leave the room - too much going on there for me :(
PacNWmom - I've only heard of the Whole30 diet because they talk about it on the Instant Pot FB group I belong to (it's for the pressure cooker!). I don't know if i could do it - let us know how it works for you.
Someone (?) was talking about using their phone vs desktop. I know you can't add pictures to this website from your phone, which is very frustrating! I will read posts on my phone but it's hard to comment - I have better luck on the desktop.
bigsky21 - been watching the news on Irma - please be careful. I see they are already declaring an emergency in all counties of FL.
B'sNukeMom, we're making the normal pre-storm preparations, extra water, canned goods, etc, but I'm not going to stress about it too much until we know more about the storm track. I did cancel my work trip to Cincinnati next week though!! I've been stranded out of town before due to weather and it's no fun to not be able to get back home :(
B'sNuke, that pool sounds heavenly. Yard work not so much. Blech
bigsky21 you sound like the voice of experience. Good luck with Irma. Mother Nature can be so destructive. I think canceling your trip was a good idea. Be safe, all you moms in Irma's line of fire. Prayers she keeps her nasty self away from land.
So my youngest just looked up and said Irma is suppose to be affecting SC directly. I guess I will have my eyes on the weather more now. This is going to be all new to me, we have had one Unclassified hurricane here in OK, and I know how to deal with tornados, but those don't include water, well they do, because we usually have a rain storm as well trying to get to the shelter, but not the same. - So prayer wall up for the safety of all -
B'sNuke - Today is day 14, and pretty much all I can think about are all the foods I can't eat for at least another 16 days (but who's counting? Ha!).
Last week I was diagnosed with Costocondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage between my sternum and ribs in the front, and between my spine and ribs in the back. Every breath hurts like a mutha' and sleeps appears to be an impossibility. Let's just say between the diet and the pain I am not a very nice person to be around right now.
Here in the NW, we have definitely been having an extended heat wave. It's supposed to be 100 today. That's just too too hot!
The natural disaster we are dealing with his forest fires. This morning when I got up there was ash all over everything outside. Here are a couple of pics. One is the skylight in our upstairs bathroom. All those dark little bits you see is ash. The other is a green chair that sits on our front porch. Check out all that ash. It's gross!! In the 34 years I've lived here I've never seen anything like it.
Happy Tuesday everyone! We were lucky enough to get to spend the weekend with both our daughters. Our college daughter lives almost exactly 1/2 way between us and our sailor so we invaded college daughter's home. My husband and I took our sailors dog with us. They haven't seen each other since before she deployed so it was a wonderful doggie/sailor reunion. We also got to spend some time with college daughter's new boyfriend (who we really like).
We are watching Irma closely also. Even though we live firmly in the midwest, my husband had been a catastrophe adjuster for long enough that it's almost become a hobby. Looks like she's going to be big and bad. I've heard that some ships are already making plans to head out of port to be safe. Sounds like a wise plan to me.
Chipmunk, my daughter was part of the power school who's graduation was cancelled last year due to a hurricane. They'll have the kids evacuate upstate if necessary (my girl got to come home last year until the air had cleared).
PacNWmom - so sorry to hear you are hurting. Nothing worse than pain when you are trying to sleep. I had frozen shoulder a couple years ago and sleeping was pretty much impossible. And then you are miserable during the day - oh I hope you are feeling better soon!!! My dad is in Prosser, WA and he's been dealing with the fire issues too. Boy it's bad. We had a big fire hit in the Los Angeles area the other day that's been pretty bad. Not fully contained yet but they hope to have it under control by the end of the week. That's going to be hard for you to clean up all that ash.
JayDee - what a great picture! So glad your nukette got to spend some time with her pup. And doing the happy dance for you to spend time with both your girls :)
bigsky - sounds like you have the right idea about the storm, plan but don't stress over it! Stay safe my friend!
PacNWmom, things are not looking bright for you these days, are they. My prayers are with you! A friend of mine fell through some rotted steps on her mother's deck, grateful it was her and not her elderly mother her fell, but in a freak twist cracked her sternum. You just don't imagine the effect and I'm sure your suffering is similar. Try wearing a seat belt. Oh my. Poor girl. That ash is nasty. We have smoke but no discernible ash yet. I remember we had ash a little when Mount St. Helens blew. Crazy. All you Sisters on the coasts, be careful! Fire on one end, hurricane on the other. Yikes!
JayDee, that nukette AND the dog have such big smiles! I love it! What a great time with both your girls. So glad for you.
Just a quick question before I head out again - Are our sailors able to take out any sort of renter's type insurance to cover their personal belongings? Just wondered with the storms and a computer purchase my sailor just made. - Hopefully, I can chime in on all the other comments later.
Chipmunk our homeowners insurance provided content coverage while NY daughter lived at GC. When she rented her own house she went through USAA and they're great.
Every insurance company is different but talk to your carrier to see what their policy is. It's generally the same or similar to what they'd offer a college student living in the dorm.
I mentioned renters insurance to my son yesterday and he asked me why... Ummm...
I heard from another Nuke mom that they are spreading the word that if you don't, you should. My son still believes mom doesn't know what she is talking about. lol I guess it's on him if the hurricane does hit and he looses his electronics and uniforms.
I live on the Oregon coast and the smoke here is nasty. We've had no wind for about a week so it just gets thicker. Where I am we have fires on two sides and the ocean on one.
Pattip, generally flood is covered under the "comprehensive" coverage on car insurance. It would show up as coverage "d" on the insurance card. Disclaimer - that's generally speaking and he should confirm with his agent.
Thanks for the insurance information! I just called my son and evidently interrupted him watching a movie in the Liberty Lounge!! Oh well - I don't know his schedule. Once I got him to understand what I meant about renter's insurance, he said he would look into it tomorrow. From past experiences with our own insurance, they are high for renter's insurance, but I will check to see if he would be covered as if in college like the other children.
I am not sure I can go all through the list, but prayers for those of you with health issues, and fires and in Florida. I remember one summer during our time in WA when there was just a haze from the fires in OR, but we never had ash, that would be no fun. Neither is 100' but we seem to have taken a nose dive here in OK, probably due to Harvey and didn't even make it to 80' today.
Love the pictures and the cute cartoons, thanks for sharing your lives with me and your wisdom and experience, it is all helpful.
PattiP I am in Cincinnati once a month for work - I handle a P&G account for my company. Usually stay in Blue Ash, but P&G is moving their planning offices downtown so I guess I'll be looking for a new hotel!
Greetings to all of you. A few of you have mentioned our smoke here in the northwest. Today in the Tri City area of Washington it is the worst that I have ever seen it (I've lived here about 19 years total). We were discussing it in our kitchen at work and someone mentioned hoping the wind direction would change so it would blow the smoke out - then we realized that there was no direction it could blow from that wouldn't bring in more smoke - we seem to have fires on all sides of us - north, south, east and west.
So I tried to keep reminding myself today that I am very thankful that I am not in a fire or in a hurricane or drowning from 50 inches of rain - although if some of that rain in Houston had made it's way to the northwest we'd all be better off right now.
Someone mentioned Royal Pains as a good Netflix show - I had not heard of it so I checked it out - loving it!
And like the rest of you - really hoping Irma decides not to make it to land at all.
Oh and JayDee - very cute picture of the dog sailor reunion.
ProudOfK - small world!! We lived in Richland for 3 years while my husband worked on his masters out at Hanford. We loved it there, except for when the fires were burning, but it was far from our families in KS, MO. We left there 20-21 years ago. Our third was born out there and we moved when she was a year old. We took the kids back for a visit the summer before our oldest's senior year. The kids wanted to move back. We loved the parks along the Columbia - many good memories, and they sprayed for mosquitoes, no chiggers, and low humidity.
Hey experienced Mom's. I have a question. My son is in boot camp and I have read that I should send him mole skin and blister band aids. I have put them in an envelope with a letter but it does make the envelope bigger and heavier. I'm going to take it to the post office to have it weighed so the right postage is on it. Do you think they will give him a hard time about it? It's not a package but it isn't just a letter either.
NNLori - maybe some of the other moms can chime in, but I sent my recruit a padded envelope with solar glasses, just in case they were able to view the eclipse and I don't think there was any issue. They may open the packages just to make sure nothing is being sent that shouldn't be. - I also had a card around the glasses and two pieces of lightweight cardboard so they wouldn't get bent.
chipmunk- thank you!! Even if he has to open it there is nothing in there that should be a problem I don't think. I'm going to go for it. Isn't it terrible how careful we have to be just to try to help!
Chipmunk - That's great - there are a lot of really nice things about living here. 95 here seems much more bearable than even 85 was in Charleston because of the humidity down here. And yes we love the Columbia - there are just 3 houses between us and the Columbia so I try to walk there often - it is always so nice and peaceful. We're in Pasco so still nice along the Columbia but not quite as nice Parks as in Richland. I'm off most Friday's so that has become our date morning and sometimes we go out for breakfast in Richland and then walk along the river there. I will tell you it has grown an amazing amount since 20 years ago.
Keeping a close eye on Irma - boy it's scary and Jose is right behind it. Florida mom's please check in if you have time. Our local news was saying there's a chance it turn away from FL a bit - I sure hope that happens and it's not a direct hit.
NNLori - I think you should be ok sending mole skin & a few bandaids. Worst case is he'll have to do a few extra push ups!
I need to get on board with Netflix. Our youngest son set it up with his account on our TV but we just haven't figured it out yet lol! Guess I need to have him explain it again....
Welcome to our newest members ~ Nukole5horses, Nicksmom and Marcia1976.
Please be sure to read the pages to the right (10) under the member profiles, especially "Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival to GC" and also familiarize yourself with OPSEC. And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have!
Just a reminder to always practice OPSEC. It applies to all aspects of the military - not just when your Sailor is on deployment. If you need a reminder please read "What is OPSEC" on the right hand side of the page. I also have it posted up above in the **NEW MEMBERS** section. Better safe than sorry!
Hi all, happy Wednesday! Yes B's, Irma is looking pretty scary for sure....northeast FL here, if it comes straight up through the state the way they're forecasting it will probably still be a hurricane by the time it gets to us, but not nearly what they're facing in the keys. The average elevation down there is only about 6 ft above sea level - they're saying storm surge could be 9 ft or higher :( I was supposed to be going down there the end of this month; we'll have to wait and see how bad it is. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best!!!
I see the Navy has evacuated about 5000 personnel from the Key West stations.
B said they are even talking about it in VA and preparing just in case.....his roommates parents live in FL - she's on here but haven't seen her much. Mommamac - you out there?
bigsky21 - stay safe and of course prepare as much as possible but get out if you have to.
B'sNukeMoM⚓️MM- since it is important for us to not make comments online where do we go to find the information like you just mentioned about the Key West evacuation? I went to Navy Live, but am not seeing anything. If they move our sailors will we be informed? Thanks.
If your sailor is moved/evacuated I think it would be up to them to notify you themselves (if they are in GC or stationed elsewhere). If still in BC I'm not sure how they would handle something like that - maybe let everyone make calls if there was time. I think they are safe in BC right now though.
B's Mom - Thanks, I guess I will have to start searching CNN for news. I found it rather interesting that they seemed to be telling a lot about the movement of boats, and such, before it actually happened. I would have thought that was against protocol, but I guess the media will report what they wish.
So, if our sailors have to be moved, then most likely they will contact us. That is good to know. And yes those at bc are fairly untouched by the fires or storms, but I am sure they have families who are not. Continued prayers.
Can someone give any insight as to what may happen in our situation? My SR is set for PIR next Friday, Sept 15. If GC has been evacuated would the logical assumption be that he would be held at GL until those stationed at GC returned?
Pelican19 - Thanks, I just emailed and texted my sailor, now that it is closer to evening hours. I will let everyone at church know that I am not turning my phone off!!
Nukelukesmom - I don't know the answer to your question but noticed on the chat that there were quite a few Nukes who were being delayed. My sailor only had a 5 hour delay after PIR on Friday, but it appear others are waiting even longer now, the weather could be a factor as well, but not sure.
I'm a Florida Mom in the Tampa Bay area. I'm also a teacher. They have decided to close the schools here for the next two days so employees can prepare for the storm. Also the schools can be opened for shelters if needed. The new track has Irma's eye off the East Coast of Florida, which isn't good for South Carolina. Shelves are bare at the stores. Water bottles can't be found at this time. A friend in Tallahassee went to Georgia for water bottles.
We also heard traffic is at a crawl on I-95 and I-75. Several of my students said they planned to leave the state as well.
My husband and I went through Hurricane Andrew in 1992. We will keep you posted.
Just heard from Daughter in GC that they "may" be evacuated, but they won't know for sure until tomorrow afternoon or evening. So sorry for you Pooh'sMom--all the uncertainty! I hope you have enough supplies. Me, I'd be one of the first out of town, partly because I'm from Up North. You sound experienced and calm. Good luck!

Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

Thanks.

Chipmunk - I saw the story online - here's the link:
http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/05/politics/key-west-navy-evacuation-hur...
If your sailor is moved/evacuated I think it would be up to them to notify you themselves (if they are in GC or stationed elsewhere). If still in BC I'm not sure how they would handle something like that - maybe let everyone make calls if there was time. I think they are safe in BC right now though.
The Navy definitely wants to keep them all safe!

Good luck!
