JayDee659 - Thanks. Pooh is in Ballston Spa. He's also been picked up for ELT. He likes it there. We saw him in August and should see him again in December.
I'm concerned for Jacksonville more than where I am. I know only time will tell.
My son's PIR was Aug. 25th. He didn't leave for GC until Sept. 1st. I would imagine that the current weather situation may impact dates for travel down there.
Pooh'smom, I'm just north of Jacksonville in Fernandina Beach....schools out early here tomorrow and closed Friday so people can prepare. Local emergency telling people if you're not in an evacuation zone due to flooding, you're better off staying put unless you're in a trailer or mobile home. Of course that could change if the storm track changes, but we're not planning on going anywhere....praying for the keys and south Florida.
Hi all. I'm in Indian River County just north of Palm Beach County on the east coast of florida we were here when Frances and Jean hit in 2003 just 3 weeks apart. It was rough then but i think I'm more worried about Irma. Older and wiser perhaps.
Btw, my sailor is in the sta-21 program currently at Auburn.
First of all, to all of you in FL, our prayers are with you for wisdom and direction in dealing with each individual circumstance and location relating to the incoming storms, which I still say, "Peace, be still." -
For the others, thank you for directing me to call my sailor at GC and see what information had been passed along to them. This is a learning curve for both of us, trying to communicate, but having to wait until dinner time, I was preoccupied today with the storms, much as when we know tornadoes are coming our direction here in OK. I know that the sailors have been briefed and have an understanding of the protocol and am resting in that knowledge. Thank you.
Praying for safety on all on the east coast. Also for several N4M moms I know that live in Oregon, and my nephew who lived at Glacier, MT. One of my friends in on alert to evacuate their home in Oregon. This is scary. We have a lot of heavy smoke in Colorado.
3B'smom - Which division was your son? Mine was 264. I knew there was at least one other that did not ship on that Saturday afterwards, but didn't know they had delayed some that much. Mine is still waiting to class up, so they might still be together in school.
He is division 270. Hopefully they will be in class together. Now with the hurricane, they may get delayed more. Just hoping that everyone is ok down there. Safety first.
JayDee659 - Thanks! My child is just new at GC and so doesn't have a car, but that is good advice. I was actually going to remind him to keep the phone charged (something he was notorious for not doing at home) and spare water bottles filled, plus make sure all ID is on self. Knowing they have been briefed already is helpful and then just guiding him to let me know protocol is as I said a learning curve.
As I recall, you have both of your sailors home? Enjoy!!
My son was in GC last year during a hurricane. Everyone was evacuated in plenty of time. If you had a car you were able to go home. He was home for about a week. I'm praying for everyone's safety...also for the wildfires in the Northwest. I don't understand the lack of coverage in the news re these fires. I'm so sorry for all of you dealing with these disasters.
Agree with Rebecca J about the wildfire coverage...friends of ours are on the fence about a planned trip to Seattle this weekend, and the airlines are allowing them free trip change because the air is unbreathable in so many places. But we don't hear anything about it in East Coast news! Everyone who's at the mercy of these natural disasters needs support.
Hi all - Happy Thursday (it's Friday for me - vacation day tomorrow)!
Continuing to monitor the news for hurricane coverage. Devastating for the Island of Barbuda - I think they said nearly everything on the island was destroyed. I heard they might be evacuating GC too....man this is scary stuff. I hope that those of you in the path are able to evacuate. Now from what I've seen you can't get flights out and the roads are packed. Ugh - please stay safe out there....
Our news doesn't show much out here about the wildfires either - I only know because my dad is in Washington and he keeps me updated.
Hi Pooh'smom....just doing what prep we can, now it's a waiting game. No matter what track it takes we'll get something. If it ends up being better here it will be worse for someone else :(
We're not going anywhere - we have dogs so unless it was looking like a direct hit we're better off just staying put. I'm not in a flood zone (surprisingly!! - close to the coast but apparently my house sits on a higher elevation) but I have a lot of trees around the house so that's my main concern. Probably going to lose power at some point, but we're prepared for that. I think convincing the dogs to go outside to potty when the weather is bad is the hardest thing!
Hi B's - I saw the news from Barbuda, it looks awful. I feel so bad for them. We have a friend who has a charter fishing boat in St Thomas; haven't heard any news from him yet but it wasn't looking good for the Virgin Islands :(
J's/S'sMom we're actually in Seattle at the moment we came across the pass yesterday and actually see how tall is not as bad as Tri-Cities but of course that can change day by day the pass however was pretty bad and even running the AC and inside air if felt like you were breathing smoke I would try to Seattle Times online or King 5 News both of those are Seattle news. I haven't been out yet today but I'll update you if anything's majorly different
Oh and one more thing the current Air Quality Alert for Seattle is just in effect until noon today. So unless something changes at least the air in Seattle should be getting better. But it is a changing thing. A lot depends on wind direction - at least in Seattle because they only have fires on one side of them.
That's a great report bigsky21. I agree with you that no matter where it hits, it's going to be sad for the folks there. We are just keeping a watch right now. A friend posted all the hotels along I-75 from Florida to Atlanta are booked. She lives in Tallahassee and said their hotels are all booked as well. I hope you hear from your friends in St. Thomas soon. Now to wait.
We're headed south now and there are countless utility trucks from. Michigan heading down. They'll stage on Georgia and move in quickly to help after the storm passes.
My Nukette called us this morning to ask how you board up her home. It doesn't appear that they'll get a direct hit in Norfolk but I'm glad she's preparing.
For you moms with a kiddo in GC, don't stress. The Navy will protect their investments and that means our sailors.
JayDee656 - So kind of Michigan to help us out. I was in Miami during Andrew and have memories of utility truck caravans driving into the damaged areas to help out. We were so thankful.
Thanks Poohs Mom. She didn't get flood insurance when she bought her house. Bought it last week so if course it won't take effect for Irma. Just another young married couple learning life lessons.
Hey everyone. My DIL is currently driving from Yulee,FL (shout out to BigSky21) with baby and two big dogs in tow to visit her family up north. She is reporting stand-still traffic in Atlanta. Crazy!
Jurisprude I'll be driving through Yulee on my way home from work today :)
Yes, traffic is crazy!! I'm staying off of the interstates as much as possible. Of course I was headed south into Jacksonville early this morning so I didn't have much traffic getting to work - getting back home will be a different story....
The utility companies don't get near enough credit in these situations - they work round the clock after the storms roll through to get everybody back up and running and there's always complaints from people saying they're not fast enough :(
We did see a post from our friend in St Thomas - both of his boats had damage, but it is minor so he was very lucky. The island was hit hard though, damage reports still coming in...
bigsky21 - Agreed! Our utility workers don't often get the appreciation they deserve. They work night and day during our tornadoes and worse, our ice storms, to get power back. We have weathered fairly well over the years, but some neighborhoods around the OKC, OK area don't do as well due to overhead wires.
Well I'm not close if anyone has to evacuate but if you feel like coming to SoCal I have an extra room!
JayDee - the Virginia Pilot posted a hurricane preparedness plan that defines your area by Zones. I sent it to B - he's zone A (I haven't had a chance to fully read it yet). I'll forward it to you on FB messenger so you can show to your nukes. Best thing is to be prepared.
CSW, I can't find a link to evac status from Goose Creek when I go to "NNPTC Facebook page." The posts are mostly old. I did find info on "Joint Base Charleston." DaughterNuke called several times today with information about Irma (I won't provide details here). Am I missing something? Thanks so much, I'm not skilled with Facebook.
Hi, I'm in Camas, wa. The smoke is thick, suit falling from sky for days, sun just a dark orange glow. The air quality terrible. My lungs hurt.
It's is so bad it has been half dark like the eclipse.
We thought we were safe because we have a Mile wide
River dividing the states, but the sinders jumped the river and now the fire in Washington too. All because a 15 yr old boy was showing off for friends and threw a smoke bomb down a gully on a hiking trail.
I have my baby books and photos in tubs by the garage...and a few of my fav shoes and handbags. Just in case.
But I am more worried abt my son in GC. My house and belongs can b replaced, my son (only child) cannot.
I hear they wo evacuate GC tomorrow
I'm so sorry, TessaNator. My mom is in Vanc, my brother is north of White Salmon and I have family on the east side, too. Everyone's air is potentially deadly! Praying for you all!! My heart hurts for the Gorge. I'm so, so glad to hear they saved Multnomah Falls. I am also praying for the boy who made a stupid mistake of a decision and will pay for it for the rest of his life.
Our sailors will be okay. They're bussing the A School kids, so don't worry, they'll be far enough away that they'll be fine. Good thing our boys (mine's an only, too) are so new they don't have much property to worry about. My son has a married buddy with a wife who is overdue and a LOT of expensive gaming equipment to evac. :(
WonderGeekWoman - wow, I did not know that Multnomah Falls had been in danger. We visited there about 6 years ago on a road trip to my dads. Beautiful hike to the falls - so glad they saved it. TessaNator - I hope they are able to get the fires under control soon. Just too many disasters going on right now :(
I'm off tomorrow but I'll be reading your posts. Everyone have a good weekend and please stay safe!
Js/Ssmom: Oregonlive.com is a good source for news about the Oregon fires.
In the Willamette Valley, the sun has been blotted out for nearly a week, due to smoke. Just today, it cleared a bit.
Our sailor was in Proto when Matthew hit. Those with vehicles had the option of going home or other destination. Our sailor went camping/hiking in the Smokeys with an army buddy from home. He had to account for his plans beforehand.
I almost flew to Fort Myers FL this AM, to assist my elderly/sick aunt & uncle, but it was too late to go. I was very upset. I pray that Irma passes way east, with no harm to anyone.
I didn't know Multnomah Falls was in danger either. I have to admit, I really haven't been hunting the news for all the fires and where they were hitting, but that is one of our family's favorite falls. We lived in Richland, WA for 3 years and returned in 2008 for a family trip to show our 3rd where she had been born. We love that part of the country, but it was too far from family in the Midwest.
Tessa - Our kids at GC will be safe. I spoke to my son and I know that they have all been briefed. WGW - I am glad as well that our sailors have little to take with them if they should evacuate.
Just got back home from Seattle - the are was definitely better in Seattle today - still a little smokey but much better than yesterday. Snoqualmie Pass was a little better than yesterday as well. But I think I found out were all that smoke got pushed too - Eastern Washington I think is worse - smoke is very thick here at home.
TesseNator - I'm sure you're really in the thick of the smoke, hope the fire stays away from you and that you don't need to evacuate.
Just looked at the latest tracking maps for Irma - now it looks like Florida is in more danger and Charleston not so much - of course by tomorrow morning it will probably be flipped again.
I'm kind of ready for hurricane season to be done and all the fires out and the smoke gone.
Informed delivery shows a letter coming from my son today! My first one, and perfect timing ahead of this storm!! Finishing up prep for Irma today, looks like a little shift to the west is going to make a big difference for us, but my friends over on the gulf coast now going to get hit harder :(
That's wonderful!! You must be so excited!! Nothing here yet unfortunately. Stay safe! I think Florida will be his hard no matter where you are! That storm is huge!!!
