Weather - Charleston

  • Chipmunk

Good morning all. I feel a little selfish enjoying my sunshine and cooler weather here in the Midwest. (hopefully get more accomplished outside this weekend than last). But know that all of you on the coasts from W>S>E are in my prayers.

And prayers for our sailors as well, some of them are having to do transitions they were not anticipating and so it can be a little unnerving to them just as it is for us, so I pray for peace and rest/ calm in the storm for all of us, and especially wisdom for those of you who must make immediate decisions.

  • Chipmunk

NNLori - hang in there. I think you are still waiting for the first handwritten letter? - It will come. If your recruit is really busy with tasks and making sure that all "I"s are dotted and all "T"s are crossed your letters may be very short. My recruit only had about 10 - 20 minutes to write on a Sunday, but managed to give me just enough to hold on to, and a glimpse of what was going on. I have to say, my recruit never let on about being homesick. I don't know if there was any and he just didn't say or what. One letter started out (and it might have been the first or second) This is hard!! - and said something about them probably getting IT (intensive training) because they were still talking a lot in their division and such.  I shouted for joy when my first letter came, mostly because I wanted to know that he had time to write and had received my letters. It gets easier and then they move to a new place and there are new circumstances and situations to acclimate to as well. It is definitely a learning experience for all of us and is a preparing us to be separated from them even differently than for those of us who have kids in college or married. I talked for 117 min last night w/my eldest catching up on her news of a week and a half, but I do that easily because her situation is different. I have been on the phone with my sailor every night or texting, because those issues are different. Keep your chin up!

  • NNLori

chipmunk- Thanks for your words of encouragement. I understand that they are working hard and I don't expect a lot. Just a short note every so often to reassure me that he is doing ok and that that he is getting letters. He is a major rule follower and will do whatever is required first I am sure of that. Not to mention kids today do not write letters. I've made my kids write thank you notes for gifts but that was with a lot of arm bending!! LOL! I just figured he would want to have some contact during this major life change. I have no control so there is nothing I can do about it. He will write or he won't so I guess I better just prepare myself for whatever the situation is. I sent him stamps! HINT, HINT!!!

  • Chipmunk

NNLori - I actually sent my SR with a SASE to me and to his grandmother, with a sheet of notebook paper inside for his first letter to us. And also some extra stamps and an extra plain envelope. So, it was very much a shock to me when I received the "form letter" because I didn't expect a legal sized envelope with is handwriting on it. And I am surprised that first one arrived to us, because I think he just put our address on it, which was scary, because our eldest had just married, moved and put in a change of address at  the PO. So, the fact that I received any mail from him, I took as a major victory! I do understand, I just have to be reminded what I was actually going through just two months ago.

  • Chipmunk

I also sent him a first letter in a legal envelope with another envelope and sheet of notebook paper. They had said not to send lots of stationary, so I was trying to give it to him in small quantities. He ended up writing most of his letters on stationary that they are able to buy at the NEX that has letter size envelopes as well. But stamps are still good to give them.

  • bigsky21

Well, I might not be getting my letter today after all.....no mail yet and it's usually here long before now so they might not be running due to the storm coming. But, I got a phone call!!!! Had a nice talk with my son, things are going pretty good - he said first week was hard, but he sounded great and said he has a lot of respect for his chief. so momma is feeling a lot better :)Sorry I haven't commented much on everything going on in other parts of the country, it's been a little tense here with Irma coming, but my thoughts are with you all as well. Wind starting to pick up a little, but not expecting much until tomorrow night. Son asked me about the storm, I wasn't sure if the kids had any idea what was going on or not, but I was able to reassure him that all is well at home.
  • Qenime

My son said they loaded the Nukes onto busses today to evacuate from Goose Creek to Fort Jackson due to Irma. He is calling it his Walmart brand vacation.
  • jurisprude

Ha Ha. My DIL, currently evacuated from Florida, is calling it her Hurrication!

Keep us posted, bigsky21! Hope all goes well for you.

  • Chipmunk

I am still new to all of this, but I don't believe we are suppose to be giving specifics about our sailors itinerary. Correct me if I am misunderstanding the security protocol.

  • Buzzbeck

I believe you are correct, it's ok to talk about what's been in the news, but not much else. It is good to read the OpSec section on this website, because this site is open to the public. It took awhile before I had my "filter", my tongue had bite marks. It's hard when everyone is eager for any scrap of info in these circumstances.

Regarding communication, it was up and down with our nuke. In boot camp our nuke wrote short letters on Sundays, but he had to give up church to do it. Once our nuke got to GC, he kind of got into a zone, and he wrote less. I prayed more. His life was studying, eating and sleeping. I wrote hundreds of cheerleading texts and letters, and often would get one syllable responses. Now that he is at his station, we text often during the day. It is so nice. This is probably different for each nuke.

Bigsky: Everyone here is praying for all Floridians! From the opposite side of the country it is the most helpless feeling to watch this unfold. My aunt and uncle are safe in a shelter in Port Charlotte, but so many in their low elevation neighborhood have chosen to stay home. I fear for them!
  • Chipmunk

Buzzbeck - Thank you for your insight. Our recruit as well, had to give up church just to get all duties done for maybe 10 - 20 min to write. I was never bothered by the short letters, it wasn't till after graduation that I found out about church though. Now that he is at A school he has started trying to locate a church but that may still take some time. Since my nuke hasn't classed up yet we have been able to be in phone contact more which has been nice with the uncertainty of Irma's whereabouts. I know once school starts it will be a different story with communication but hopefully we won't be trying to figure out what the protocols are during a hurricane!!

  • NickSydmom

When I heard they were evacuating and they might be able to come home, I got in the car. It was a 14 hour drive each way, without stops. I made it in 15 hrs on the way down and 14 1/2 on the way back. I came back with my boy. The hurricane turned so they have to be back on Tuesday. So the kid has to leave tomorrow. I was hoping for another day but it was worth it. The stuff us moms do for our babies
  • Chipmunk

Nicknukemom - stay safe driving. I preferred to just have some nice conversations on the phone with mine since there was extra liberty.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy Monday.  I hope everyone in or near FL is safe.  Check in & let us know how you are doing....  Irma caused lots of damage and unfortunately is not done yet - the pictures are devastating but from what the news is saying it could have been so much worse.  Thank goodness it lessened in severity.  And now Jose and Katia are right behind :(  I believe things are settling down in GC so sailors in school should be ok now.

Good afternoon from just south of the Tampa Bay area. Thank you so much for the prayers and good wishes for all. We too are VERY fortunate to have had nothing but some tree branches and a whole lot of leaves scattered around our house. We had boarded up the house on Friday and had plenty of supplies  "in case". We even still have power. I think the hardest part was the waiting for the last several days, never really knowing what way she would go. I mean last week she was supposed to go up the east coast!! And who ever is in charge of selecting names.. why on gods green earth would you pick the name of a German war Goddess!!! What kind of storm do you think she would be ???? Anyway, I'm counting my blessing and still praying for those who are not as fortunate as I.

Blessings to all the Navy ships and crews  that are continuing to offer and headed to aide in the recovery process from Harvey and Irma.

Thanks again, hugs to you all !!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

mom of mrams, you made me laugh. Yes, intuitively a nasty goddess is a poor namesake for a storm. However, I work in schools and trying to come up with a name for a baby that doesn't conjure up some bad memory of a spawn of satan is tough. I suppose the storm namers have an equally tough time. Who does that, anyway? Oh well, continued prayers for all who are suffering the vagaries of Mother Nature, including our Sisters on both coasts from fire and rain. And Harvey victims, we aren't forgetting you even if it looks like the media are.

  • Pooh'sMom

Checking in from Valrico, Florida.  We are East of Tampa.  These days leading up to the storm have aged me.  Last night went so much smoother than it could have been.  We have a few screens that blew out of the pool enclosure, and that's IT!  The neighborhood retention pond did it's job and filled nicely.  We have electricity this morning which is better than 38% of the county that does not.  We are extremely grateful.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

I'm so glad to hear you are safe Pooh'sMom, mom of mrams and BlancheMarie and didn't suffer much in the way of damage!  We still have other moms out there that need to check in - let us know how you are doing please!

mom of mrams you made me chuckle too!  Glad to see you still have a sense of humor in all of this :)

  • bigsky21

Checking in from Fernandina Beach FL....it was a wild night but we're OK with minimal damage to our house/vehicles, very lucky compared to some in our area :( Could have been so much worse!!!!
  • mom of mrams

Nancy Jo, I  work for the school system also and yes I know exactly what you mean when people mention Baby names, its like no-no-no not that name !!!

  • Sadandi

Greetings from indian River County, Fl on the east coast about an hour or so north of palm beach. 84% of our county is without power. Some serious flooding in a few areas but not much damage. Just waiting for power.
  • Sadandi

Wow, i can't believe how bad it is in Charleston. Such a beautiful place. So sad, but it seems to happen alot there.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday!  Hope everyone is doing well today.  Continuing to send prayers to all affected by the devastation in Texas and Florida - and other states.  I did see on the news that there was quite a bit of flooding in Charleston too.  Hopefully they'll be able to get back to business soon there.

We talked to B last night - he said right now the weather in VA is beautiful but they are keeping a close eye on Jose as it might possibly loop around and come back to VA.  Our local news was finally doing a story on the fire in Montana - which is the one affecting WA & OR - it's still pretty bad....

bigsky21 ans Sadandi - so glad you only had minimal damage.  Hopefully you get power back soon - although I saw on the news this morning that it could take quite a while depending on what area you are in.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

I'm encouraged by the positive reports from our FL sisters, positive in that it could have been worse but still without power and with clean-up to do. We may not be hearing from some who have not fared as well.Hang in there, Navy Moms!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

NancyJo - I just read an article that said 15 million people in FL and another million in GA are still without power.  I just can't even wrap my head around that.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

BlancheMarie, it sounds like a bad situation but there are many good people in this world and you sound like you are one of them. Sharing showers, freezers, and power cords is Americans pulling together. I have heard that some of the charitable groups are being less than helpful. I hope those instances were out of the norm.

B'sNuke, it is almost unimaginable for us living day-to-day away from the disaster. I just can't fathom it.

I can't help dig my sisters out but I can pray and do what I can from here. I'm giving blood and money. It doesn't seem enough but it's all I can do.

  • bigsky21

From Fernandina Beach - power at my house just came back on a few minutes ago, but lots in our area are still without. And there are some who never lost it, go figure.... Damage varies greatly here, from minor, like my house, to those who flooded and lost everything or had trees fall on their homes :( The boat ramp down the road from my house is gone, but our marina in Fernandina fared better this time than with Matthew, thank goodness - repairs still aren't complete from Matthew, but at least it looks like no additional damage to deal with. Downtown Jacksonville flooded from the St Johns River - this is the worst flooding since hurricane Dora in 1964 :( Jacksonville has some parts that got hit pretty hard, but the devastation in the Keys is absolutely heartbreaking - it's going to take years to recover from this one I'm afraid. Feeling thankful for my situation and praying for those who weren't as fortunate.

  • JayDee659

We just returned from a trip to the Smoky Mountains in northern Georgia.  On our way south we were passed by armies of utility vehicles preparing to go in after the storm and help out.  On our way home we noticed that most of the vehicles on the roads had Florida plates.  Several rest stops had check in stations for evacuees and had water and essentials for them.  It was good to see so many people helping out.

I know of one Nuke mom (she's on the FB page but maybe not here) and she's fine.  Said her house weathered the storm.  Our friends in Tampa are missing some screens but that's about it.  My sister in Jacksonville could not leave as she's a nurse and despite losing power reported that she was fine.  My husbands siblings were all in Daytona and made it out right in front of the storm.  It's a miracle that all the people I know personally made it through with little to no damage.  Jimmy Buffet said it best "there's just not reasoning with hurricane season".

I have to admit that I felt a little guilty for enjoying myself on a long weekend while so many others were scrambling for a place to stay.  BUT we did have a good time.  Here's a  picture of us on the Dragon's Tail (hwy 129) 318 curves in 11 miles.  If you're a motorcycle enthusiast you know about it.

  • Nukelukesmom

JayDee659 you were in my backyard. I live and work about 5 miles from The Dragon. We have had lots of evacuees in our area the last few days. Praying for all affected by this terrible storm.

  • JayDee659

Nukelukesmom, I wish I'd have known, I'd have loved to meet up for coffee!  We were all over the place, GA, NC & TN.  Half the time I didn't know what state I was in.  You are blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the country.

  • Chipmunk

JayDee659 - It is perfectly alright for you to enjoy being with your family even when others are having a tough time. We all go through seasons in this life and right now yours is a different one from others and that is okay.

Glad to hear the positive reports, but it is also good to hear what are not so great reports and have a better idea of what to pray for and how to help.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Aw JayDee - that looks like so much fun!

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom it was! I'm making salsa chicken in my IP tonight. Wish me luck!
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

I made a really good chicken/chili in mine last night.  2nd time I've made it - it's a keeper.  Let me know how the salsa chicken turns out.

  • JayDee659

Salsa chicken was good but I've found that I need to add about 8 minutes to the cooking time.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all -Happy Wednesday!

JayDee - so how many minutes total did you cook it?  I'm assuming no trivet, directly in the salsa?  Did it end up whole or shreddable?

Do we have anyone with PIR this Friday?

  • fingerprintchick

My son had PIR this past Friday and was told his orders had changed to THU because of Irma. Yesterday his name was on the board to fly out this Friday, but by the time he returned from lunch it had been taken down because of Jose. He said there are a lot of nukes in THU and a lot graduating this Friday. GC may get inundated in the next week or two
  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom, it took 16 minutes.  The recipe calls for 8 but it was not cooked.  So I put it in for another 8 which did the trick.  I just had 2 chicken breasts in there. Note to self - 16 minutes for frozen chicken.  :)

  • Chipmunk

fingerprintchick - thanks for the update. I wondered what was going on in GL, with the evacuation at GC last weekend. My nuke is waiting for more ET's to show up before he can class up, so that may be another week or so, depending on the sailors being sent to GC.

Were you able to give your son his phone anyway to have at THU? My son's PIR was 8/25 and due to paperwork almost didn't fly out on Sat, but I was glad he could so that we were able to go to the airport and give him the phone and then he had the weekend to acclimate to life at GC.

Also, for others at GC the understanding was that unless something else came up, the graduations for "A" school would not be altered due to Irma. Be sure to check with your sailors. Mine was enjoying a game of Risk last night with several of the guys in his ship. It had been raining enough that since they had liberty, he didn't wish to get outside much. It sort of surprised me, he always liked going out in the rain, but that was when Mom still washed all the clothes!!!

  • Nukelukesmom

PIR for us this Friday. Anxious to see what happens with him flying out. He called yesterday with the "I'm a Sailor" call but did not have any info on his flight yet. He thought he would find out today. Sure hoping for a little extra time in Great Lakes. Fingers crossed.

  • Chipmunk

Nukelukesmom - congratulations!!  My son didn't know when he was flying out after BS-21 either. In fact it wasn't until we went down on the floor to hug him that we found out he still had to get more paperwork done and wasn't actually on liberty, until late that afternoon. So many things can change, but hope for the best and hopefully you can have a good amount of time with your sailor.

  • fingerprintchick

Chipmunk I'm not sure how many ETs there are. My son said everyone in that PIR group was MM. I know my sons first choice was ET, but needs of the navy are clearly MM's right now.
  • Chipmunk

fingerprintchick - Thank you for the information.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Thursday!

It's going to be interesting to see if any new sailors fly out to GC or if they wait another week. I'm guessing from what fingerprintchick said they will probably wait....

Continuing to send prayers for those affected by Hurricane Harvey & Irma.  Such heartbreaking news about the residents of the nursing home that passed away.  I sure hope they can get power restored ASAP.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Have you all heard of the documentary "Game of Honor"?  It's narrated by Gary Sinise and it's about the yearly Army-Navy football game and the rigorous programs of military training at West Point and the Naval Academy.  It's from 2011.  My husband taped it & we watched it last night (it was playing on Showtime) - awesome show, I highly recommend it.  We watch the game every year on TV but now it's on my bucket list to actually attend a game in person.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

PacNWmom - how's the Whole 30 going?  And how are you doing with your costocondritis?  Is it getting better?

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Latest THU update. Flights to GC are starting to roll. All the boys should be leaving in waves. It's a go!
