JayDee, sounds like fun. Grand Canyon is breathtaking! We were there in early Aug several years ago, so it was hot, I wonder if it was a little cooler for you. A pedicure sounds like fun. We had a nice visit with our eldest and son-in-law. After a nice lunch with them we went to a Route 66 museum in west OK. An enjoyable day. Have fun in Vegas!

HI everyone,  I could use some help and suggestions.  I was just wondering about Boot Camp graduation pictures.  My sailor got a package with multiple frames  So I went to pick them up because he was THU and had to go through several things before released that day.  So I went and paid for the stuff but didn't really know what I was paying for. I really hadn't looked through at the time and just going through now. He ordered a MOM FRAME.  Anybody know what that's supposed to look like, because when I opened the package it was just a plain 5x7 frame.  Nothing else.  Also, he ordered an 11x14 frame. We have an 11x14 photo, but the frame comes with matting which can't be used with a solo 11x14 photo.  It is divided into 3 sections, one of which has the sailors Creed.  He did not order anything that says Sailor's Creed Frame and I honestly do not know what is supposed to fit in the cut outs.  There is the sailor's creed in the top left a spot for a 5x7 in the top right and then below, there is a spot for an 8x10 landscape oriented photo and we have no landscape 8x10 photos in the package.  I believe the order is so messed up.  I think they just grabbed boxes like they knew what they were doing and moved you along because the lines were sooooo  long and they were trying to move the people out as fast as possible.  Does anyone know where I can see pictures of the frames online so I can at least have a conversation with the lab and speak intelligently with them?  Because right now I don't even know what these things are supposed to look like.  (And my sailor's comment was I don't know, can't remember). And I never received the Recruit Shadowbox which was supposed to be mailed.  How much time do we wait before the Recruit Shadowbox arrives home?

And I do have their phone number and I will call them, but I was just wondering if anyone out there knows where to go to view what it is I am supposed to get based on what the receipt shows so I can at least have a conversation with them knowing what it should look like.  Or if anyone got a MOM frame can tell me what that looks like.

    Any help gratefully appreciated!!!

soccermom19 - How frustrating!! I can't help with the link and I have to scoot into church, but I just wanted to say, you might post this on boot camp Mom's group and your PIR group (although they tend to go dormant after PIR). I would look online for something about RTC NEX or the Photo NEX. Maybe someone else with some time can help you. But wanted to respond quickly.

  • NNLori

I have question for all you Nuke Mom's! My son is graduating boot camp on 10/20 and we are in the midst of our travel arrangements. I am driving but my husband and daughter are flying due to time constraints with work and school. Is there an airport that they "generally" fly from to Goose Creek. We wanted to try to arrange for  my husband and daughter to fly in and out of the airport that my son will most likely fly out of. We figure that way we can meet him at the airport to give him his electronics and husband and daughter can fly out from the same place. It would be convenient. I know there is no guarantee but I'm just trying to make the best guess I can. I know he flew into O'Hare but I guess that doesn't mean he will fly out to A school from there. Thanks for any help!! What have been your experiences?

  • NNLori

Ok, well it is what it is! We will deal with whatever happens. Thanks for your help BlancheMarie.
  • Nukelukesmom

NNLori, Not trying to complicate things for you, but we were told "90%" of the Nukes fly out of O'Hare but our son ended up flying out from Midway. I truly think there is no way of knowing until they have those orders in hand, which was the day of PIR ( about two hours after the graduation ceremony) for us.

  • KayCee

NNLori - my son originally was told it would most likely be O'Hare and communicated that in a letter. He didn't actually get his orders until after PIR (3 hours after the end of the ceremony) and it ended up being Midway early morning.

  • Chipmunk

NNLori - mine flew out of O'Hara - Hopefully, the order delays after PIR are getting shorter. Mine was a 6 hour wait!! Thankfully the other ladies mention a shorter wait time. But there is no guarantee on which airport they fly out of.

  • NNLori

Yes, I understand. I'm getting the gist. No guarantees with anything! Lol! So will we know at PIR or will we have to wait. And if we have to wait do we have to wait there until the orders are given and then they get Libery. How does that work?
  • KayCee

NNLori - I saw my new Sailor after PIR graduation on the floor for literally 5 minutes. We took a few pictures and then he said he really needed to leave to go get his orders. We agreed on meeting outside the NEX. It was very busy there initially and I had my eyes peeled for my Sailor. After waiting an hour, the crowd had lessened and after waiting two hours it was clear that groups of families were waiting. It was a total of three hours for me waiting there and even longer for some until he arrived and then had liberty. Every situation is different I’m sure, but that was my experience. All the Nukes had to go get their orders after PIR for this particular TG.
  • Chipmunk

NNLori- I started  to send a detailed PM to you then figured I would just put a short note, here. KayCee's situation is exactly as mine, except being a few PIR's earlier our wait was at least 5 hours for our sailor before he had Liberty. I don't know if they are getting slightly faster or not, but I posted several comments on the boot camp site, I think, after my sailor's PIR 8/25. I believe you will have to stay there at RTC to pick them up for them to leave with you for liberty. We were even with a veteran couple (2nd time around, and they stayed as well.)

FYI, there are sandwiches and such that you may buy from the refrigerator section in the NEX. That was our lunch. I can PM you more details if you wish.

B'sNukeMoM⚓️MM & JayDee659 are you okay?  I'm seeing news reports of a shooting in Vegas.  Please post soon to let us know.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

I’m good everyone. Very scary - never in my wildest dreams did I imagine running through a hotel - people panicked and were running everywhere. We are locked in our room now - we are safe. Police are everywhere on the strip. I had lunch with JayDee & another Navy Mom much earlier before any of this happened.
  • girl chief

Thank God you are okay.  Prayers for your and the other moms safety and prayers for the victims.

  • Pooh'sMom

B'sNukeMom - SO THANKFUL you all are safe.  So tragic.

  • samsmom

B'sNukeMom- glad to hear you are safe. Prayers for you and the victims.
  • bigsky21

More news coming out of Vegas...so scary and sad. B'sNukeMom glad you are OK!
  • Chipmunk

Just starting our day and my husband told me about Vegas. First thoughts were of you ladies!. Thanks for posting your safety. Prayers for all.

  • ProudOfK

Chipmunk, NNLori and KayCee - reading your comments about the wait at PIR makes me feel sad for all of you that have come through PIR recently that have missed some of the precious little time with your sailor.  After my son's PIR he literally did not leave our side until we brought him back to base that evening.  He already had all his orders and info.  We walked with him to the NEX so he could pick up some things he ordered and we did a little shopping and then we all left together.  The day goes fast enough, I can't imagine not having that 3 or 5 hours that you're having to wait for your sailor after PIR.

B'sNukeMom - so glad you're safe and surely hoping JayDee is as well.  The first I heard about this was reading the post here as I'm just getting up.

  • ProudOfK

Oh my - I just pulled up the news - B'sNukeMom - really really thankful you made it through and really hoping we hear from JayDee and that the other mom you met with is OK.  Thoughts are with you today.

  • NNLori

Thank you everyone for your input regarding wait times and airports. My conclusion is that I just won't know anything and their is no way to plan. LOL!! I guess I better get used to it. We will just have to make our plans and hope for the best. Thanks again!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

B'sNuke&JayDee, my heart is in my throat thinking of you in Vegas. Any word from JayDee? So grateful you are OK, B'sNuke! <3<3<3

  • Chipmunk

NNLori - it really is a play by ear. I am very thankful we opted to drive to GL, stayed in an inexpensive hotel so we could check out very early Sat am to go to the airport to be with our Sailor. We also parked in the RTC garage which meant we didn't have any concerns with our car, and had no idea we would be there literally all day.

ProudOfK - Yes, it was rather frustrating, especially when everything posted here and on the RTC site indicated that we would have our sailor immediately after PIR. Those whose sailors were held back due to Irma might have had more time, but I am honestly sorry to see the delay is still occurring. I was hopeful the reason we were told for the delay had been fixed but apparently not, and I posted several comments on the boot camp group. Yes, you can make your plans as best as you can but you also have to stay flexible. At least some have a heads up now of what to expect, possibly.

Still eager to hear from all our vacationing moms.

  • JayDee659

J's /S's mom thank you, we're fine. I woke up to a million frantic texts from home. I'm staying with a Navy Mom in her home in Vegas. I've had text exchange with B'sNukeMom.
  • Esti'sMom

So glad to hear from both of you, and that you're doing well (considering). Just talked with my mom, who lives in Vegas... they are good too.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Didn’t sleep much last night as we were monitoring the news and responding to text messages from friends & family. This is absolutely heartbreaking. Please pray for the victims and the families.
JayDee & Oleander are safe too. Pray for safe travels for JayDee.
  • AmbersMom

I don't post on here very often but I do read the posts of others. I know that a few of our moms were heading to Las Vegas this weekend. My heart sank as soon as I heard the awful news of the shooting. I am so relieved to read that all of you are safe and uninjured.

  • NickSydmom

Oh my goodness, that had to have been terrifying for you ladies. I don't understand why evil like that exists. I'm so glad you guys are ok.
  • Buzzbeck

Relieved to hear all navy moms are ok.
  • Grannyofnine

I am glad to hear that the mom's who went to Vegas are ok. Praying for everyone.

I have a question - I am going to GL for PIR but cannot attend. Where is the best place to wait to see my sailor after graduation. And what if we have to wait 3-5 hours for him to get his orders?
  • Chipmunk

Grannyofnine - I would say it is best for you to just stay at the motel and wait for the rest of the family to get there. There is a museum, nearby that I believe you can go to but it is not actually on RTC, and I don't know that the family would be able to drop you off there before PIR, as they will be wanting to get there around 6:30 - 6:45 to be in line for when the doors open at 7 AM to get good seats and then be able to make other purchases there, especially the division coins if the sailor hasn't done so already.

Other than the museum, I don't believe you are able to get on RTC without a ticket or the sailor and you would just be sitting either outside or in the NEX area, and if the weather is getting cooler, there is not a lot of seating inside.

It is very unfortunate, I understand. Which is why after our experience back in Aug, I started posting notes on the boot camp group to stay flexible and just because the RTC site and this one says that if your sailor is flying out to A school they will have liberty immediately after PIR is not how it has been going. Those that were delayed flying out due to Irma, I think would have had more time, I am not sure. But this is something that seems to be confined to the Nukes, and at least Subs for one of our division families.

Maybe others that have gone through recently can chime in or other veterans can share options for where to wait.

  • Chipmunk

To clarify, Grannyofnine, if you were able to get on RTC after PIR somehow, you would still be waiting outside the NEX, or in the lounge there. I guess you could go sit in the chapel, but still you would really have nothing to do except watch other soldiers marching by occasionally.

  • JayDee659

Grannyofnine, I would tend to wait at the hotel.  I've heard that they have overflow seating at the chapel, but also hear that once you're in, you cannot leave.  It didn't sound very appealing to me and if you're going to watch it via video you might as well be comfortably in your room.

This waiting for orders thing is new to me.  My daughter was ready to go the minute we met her on the drill floor after PIR and we were out and seated at a restaurant in under an hour.  Hopefully the waiting for orders thing has been cleared up and you'll get to see your sailor very quickly after PIR!

  • JayDee659

Hi Buzzbeck, thank you!  B'sNukeMom had the worst of the experience.  Unfortunately it was just too much of a close call for my taste.  But, all's well that ends well.  The Navy Mom that I was staying with has personal ties to one gentleman who died and a young lady who is hospitalized.  It's just a horrible thing.

When our plane landed at home, the tv news crews were waiting outside security to interview anyone getting off the plane from Vegas.  They had approached my husband asking him if he was waiting for someone on the plane.  None of us had been at the concert and I didn't speak to the news crew, but come on people!  I thought them standing there like vultures was intrusive and rude.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

I'm w/ you, JayDee. I watched some of the interview of the shooter's poor brother and he was totally destroyed by what his brother did. I kept thinking why is he even talking to these people? I quit watching. Beyond understanding. I'm just so glad all 3 of you moms are OK. We were worried here on N4Ms.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Good Morning all - my son, his friend and I made it home yesterday afternoon.  I am heartbroken over what happened in Vegas - I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around it.  It's just so senseless.  I think of how terrifying it was in our hotel when mass hysteria/panic broke out and everyone was running and screaming - and then I think about what was happening at the concert venue and I just can't imagine what they were going through.  I'm thankful my son and his friend kept calm and they actually guided a whole group of us through the hotel to the elevator and got us to our room safely.

On a happy note I did get to meet up with JayDee and Oleander for lunch on Sunday at Gordon Ramsey's Burger place.  It was delicious and we had so much fun chatting.  I love meeting Navy mom's.

Yesterday was JayDee's birthday - I wasn't able to get on here to post (but I did wish her a happy birthday on FB!) so I just want to say Happy Belated Birthday from all us Navy mom's here!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Happy Belated Birthday JayDee!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Welcome to our newest members ~ Jessie and Beansis.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Here we are in Vegas (L to R). JayDee, Oleander and myself.

  • JayDee659

Thanks B'sNukeMom!  Glad you are safely home!

I'm the one with the big head because I was closest to the camera.  My head is not that big.

  • Chipmunk

JayDee659 -- LOL!! Glad you all a fun time and are all home safe!!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Love the photo! Happy Belated Birthday, JayDee!! B'sNuke, were you staying near Mandalay Bay?

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

ps JayDee I would not have thought your head was big until you said something. LOL My daughter keeps saying she has a little head which is not noticeable at all until she says something. Gah!

  • NickSydmom

Granny of nine, my son's PIR was a month ago. My parents came and stayed at the hotel to watch. Before the PIR started the staff told everyone in the lobby watching, if they were playing on their phones the program would be interrupted. The people didn't care that they were messing up the whole thing. My dad asked a couple of people to stop, so he could watch. They saw maybe 5 minutes of the whole thing. You aren't going to have a choice, you can no longer get on base without a ticket. If you are stuck with rude people, speak up, don't let them ruin it for you.
  • JayDee659

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes!
  • bigsky21

Great picture B’sNukeMoM and JayDee!! So glad you are all Ok.
This time next week I will be packing to head to Great Lakes!!! Looks like we have another storm headed this way, but should be past us before I’m supposed to fly out.
  • Pooh'sMom

So thrilled you ladies were able to meet up!

  • workingatit

my new sailor said he has his orders to report to A school after Pir and has to leave early Saturday morning.  What can he expect after he gets to the A school in Charleston?

  • samsmom

He will have in docs which will be a few days of settling in and waiting for his A school class to form.
  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

workingatit - He'll be in a holding pattern for a bit.  They wait to gather enough students to start the class.  He'll go through mild hazing (very mild) and do manual labor like cleaning or yardwork.  I remember when my son called me laughing about the joke about having to get your mattress stamped.
