workingatit - I've been laughing at my mistake about your name.  I didn't understand why you would call yourself "working a tit".  I just got that it is probably "working at it".  My bad!

  • Chipmunk

    Tx Mom  - LOL!

Workingatit - There is a link to the right of the comments here, your sailor's schedule upon arrival at GC, and some other helpful articles.  My sailor arrived at GC 8/26 and did not "class up" until 9/20, partially due to Irma. During that time, they had classes on life skills, and various jobs as mentioned. But if your sailor has something they enjoy or offer and volunteer, they might actually get to do a job they would enjoy as was the case with my son.  One early morning a week, at least for Indocs, they did a 5K run. I believe they are allowed to have their own running shoes - so you might bring those to give to your son. They also have dress uniform inspections once a week. My sailor's first Sat afternoon was spent getting established in his BEQ, figuring out doing laundry, getting supplies from the mini NEX and trying to get the shoe polish out of his dress whites. Also, his insignia was incorrect so had to take his uniforms to the cleaners and pay for those to be changed.

Not all sailors will be in Indoc very long, some of his TG classed up almost immediately. But they all have to do UI's which is Under Instruction  - being trained to stand watch in various areas and dealing with security. This is a qualification that has to be done before they graduate A school, so those that have more Indoc time need to take advantage of the  easier opportunity to accomplish that requirement. They also have some weekend liberty time especially if there is a holiday and mine took the bus and bought a laptop.

My sailor also told me, "Tell all the newbies not to slack up at all on their strictness. Despite some of the staff not being as strict on us Nukes (i.e. how to address senior rank) others aren't so it is better to just stay strict yourself."

Also, they need locks for their lockers and mine was bothered because he would have bought at couple at the RTC Nex, instead of just the one he was told he needed for his seabag.

TxMom I've been laughing at your faux pas about workingatit's name and had to share it with a coworker. LOL I'm dying.

I know B'sNuke always points this out to newbies but the documents to the right on this page are invaluable as we work our way through the morass that is the nuke pipeline. It's worth taking the time to read.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Thursday!

TxMom - oh yeah, I've been laughing at your faux pas too.  I needed a good laugh - thank you :)

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Here's a few pictures of the Seven Magic Mountains - we stopped at them on our way in to Vegas.  Pretty cool art out in the middle of the desert.

Hello Nuke Moms- I understand you've all said nothing is in stone (so to speak) with this Navy thing-lol. But my sons bc date was just pushed back again. Anyone ever hear of this?? I've heard some of you say you SR was pushed up but I haven't heard of pushed out/back.
I know he changed rates to the Nuke program after he initially signed on and he was pushed back then and also told his date could change (told may be be pushed up)but we just learned he was pushed back again. Is this normal? (Ok maybe wrong choice of words - as there seems to be a different standard of normal for the Navy). So has anyone heard of this or dealt with this?? Anyone have words I can tell my DEP'er.
  • PacNWmom

Ceej- I've heard a lot recently about Nukes having to be held in GL after PIR, either because of hurricanes, backlog of medical releases, etc. The Navy nay be trying to hold some folks back from starting bc so they can work on clearing the backlog. Just a hunch.

You can help you DEP-er by reassuring them that nothing's "wrong", just on Navy time. Also, by letting them know you're behind them 100% now, and whenever they leave. Best of luck!

  • Grannyofnine

TX Mom - That is too funny! LOL
  • Grannyofnine

Thanks Ladies for responding to my question. I kind of thought it would be better to stay at the motel since we can't actually go to the graduation. We should be able to watch it on our tablet shouldn't we? Just can't wait to see my grandson.
  • Chipmunk

Grannyofnine - make sure the motel you are staying in offers free WiFi or you might have to sit in a lobby or someplace for internet connection or pay for it. But even if you have to pay it will be worth it. If the live connection isn't working for some reason or another, they should still have it recorded and able to view later.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Good Morning all and Happy Friday!

Ceej0347 - tell your son not to put too much thought into the delays - it is what it is.  But do remind him not to procrastinate...they could easily move the ship date back up & he wants to be as physically & mentally prepared as he can be.

  • Chipmunk

toewsiejo!  and Hawk0723 - Welcome!!! I haven't looked at your profiles yet, but if you have PIR dates when are they? Or what stage are you at with your recruit?

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • Chipmunk

jjckjj - Red on Friday, stands for Remember Everyone Deployed.  Thanks for sharing when your SR arrived at BC.

    Welcome to our group.

  • Beansis

I heard the new Sailors that come in they go through a lite hazing. Is this true ? I thought hazing was not allowed. That has me concerned. Is this true? Has anyone heard of this?
  • Chipmunk

Beansis - I noticed the "light hazing" comment as well, but don't recall who posted it. Maybe they will elaborate on it for us. My son has been at GC since 8/26/17 and was in Indoc for almost a month. He hasn't mentioned anything, the most he has mentioned is the amount of "colorful language" (note sarcasm) that is thrown around his head like candy. He deems cussing as unnecessary for communication. But other than that, he has been fairly occupied with his tasks and now study.

  • JayDee659

    My daughter said, "hazing???"
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

My Dad, a WWII navy vet, served on the USS Wilson, Passed away yesterday. He was 91 and the last 6 years bought land and built a ranch pretty much on his own. Even given his age, he was in decent shape and sharp as a tack. This was not expected.

I texted my son and he got it just as he was headed back to his boat so could not answer. He told someone on the boat, who told the CO. The CO came and ordered him topside to call his Mom!! What a great CO. He also ordered him to arrange to come home for the funeral.  He is buying a new dress uniform to wear to honor my Dad. I am beyond grief stricken. What a special young man I raised to think of this.

  • JayDee659

COTwin I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember the great pictures that you had posted. I'm glad your son will be with you. Hugs!
  • ProudOfK

Co-TwinSalorsMom - I choked up when I read your post - so glad to hear how supportive your son's CO was and that your son will be coming home.  You're father sounds like a wonderful man!  We've missed you hear - glad to see your name pop up but sorry for the circumstances.

Chipmunk - I'm appreciated your comment regarding cussing - my sailors and our family's sentiments exactly.  I was very glad when we visited our sailor that none of being in that atmosphere seemed to have rubbed off on our son.

  • Chipmunk

CO-TwinSalorsMom- My condolences. My father passed away on DD 2015, he was 89. He was in the Army Air Corps but never served oversees. There are so many things that I wish I could have talked to him about now that my son is serving in the Navy, but never thought to discuss with him. I am very glad that your son's CO is allowing him the opportunity to travel home for the funeral. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

(Sorry, I had to stop and wave to my sailor - youngest got him set up on the web cam, except our desktop hasn't had speaker capabilities for some time - so a lot of mouthing words, and them typing.)

    ProudOfK - Thanks!

  • Pooh'sMom

Co-Twin,  Love and prayers for your family and friends.  What a blessing to have your dad for so long and sharp as a tack!

  • 3B'smom

CO-TwinSailorsMom - Thinking of you and your family during this time.
  • Grannyofnine

CO-Twin, I'm so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you and your family.
  • workingatit

so glad to have a new Sailor this weekend! he arrives in Charleston today for A school. Looking forward to see what this involves for him and visiting with him more.

  • PacNWmom

Co-Twin, so sorry to hear of your loss. Sending big hugs to you during this difficult time.

Today is my oldest child's and my brother's b-day. It is also the 6 year anniversary of my dad being diagnosed with leukemia. We weren't sure if he would survive that weekend. Thankfully, he is doing well now, not cured, but on a stable course. We are all so very thankful for every day we have with him. He is my Sailor's biggest fan (aside from me, of course).

Give your loved ones  a hug, a call, an email or a text y'all. Make sure all those who are important to you know it!

  • NonnaB

CO-Twin, please accept my sympathy on the loss of your Dad. May your memories of him keep him forever alive in your heart.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

CoTwin - so sorry for your loss. Sending prayers to you & your family. I remember the last pictures you posted of your dad in his suspenders and how happy he looked! Hugs
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Oh Patty, you brought me to tears again with that photo. Beautiful, thank you. Sorry for all of you who have lost your dads also.

Here he is on his honor flight a few years back.

  • Chipmunk

CO-TwinSalorsMom - that will be a picture for you to cherish.

Someone mentioned suspenders, I think, and it made me think of my dad. Maybe if I can figure it out I will post both of my parents on my page. We used a picture of my father in his overalls that my brother had taken for his obituary picture. Then, this January for my mother we found an older picture back when she taught school. I miss them both and they missed our busy summer of 2 weddings and HS then BC graduation for our sailor. But I believe they were watching over us, and their memories live in our hearts.

workingatit - congratulations on your sailor's graduation from bc!. Depending on how quickly they class up, you may have an opportunity for some phone calls and catch up before they hit the grind again. What rating is your Nuke?

  • bigsky21

Oh my gosh I was so excited yesterday to see my son in some random pics posted to RTC Facebook page.....unexpected, I didn’t think they posted pics of recruits in training but there he was! Five more days to PIR!!!
  • NNLori

bigsky21 - That is so awesome!!! I have looked through pics that have been posted but haven't seen my SR yet. That would be such an awesome treat to see his face!!! :))) I imagine you were very excited to see him!! I know I would be!!

  • bigsky21

It was “Navy Recruit Training Command (RTC) - Great Lakes - Boot Camp and Beyond...”
For the header photo there is a bust of a Sailor on the left with multiple flags from left to right in the background.
  • bigsky21

    My son is div 330
  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Dear COTwin, I'm so very sorry for your loss. It will be 33 years since my dad's been gone but I still miss him. Your dad was so cute and I loved your stories about him. The honor flight was the best. I know you will hold those memories close to your heart. My prayers are with you and your family.

Congrats on PIR, workingatit! That is one of the most awesome things we navy moms experience, IMHO.

This weekend the Nebraska Navy moms had a lunch and while we were getting settled one of the moms got the call from boot camp from her SR. How great is that! And one of the moms has a sailor who is finishing his enlistment in February. I'm reminded how we are all in different places on our journey yet are all alike. We are moms who love our sailors.

Have a great week, Sea Sisters!

  • CountryMomOfASailor#47

Hello. I am new to this forum. My daughter graduates 17 Nov if all goes well. She is in the "nuke" program. She will fly to Charleston, SC directly after graduation so I am wondering if anyone here has a family member or friend going straight to their A School? I am a newbie so as a Navy Mom I am glad to find this website to read all the encouraging posts!

  • NukeBoyzMom

Hi CountryMom!  My son graduates on Nov 17th also, and is also a Nuke flying to Charleston right after graduation!

  • CountryMomOfASailor#47

Hi NukeBoyzMom! That is awesome! Are you driving or flying to Great Lakes? We plan on driving but it will be a very long drive. 10 hrs or longer. Maybe I will see you there?

  • Chipmunk

CountryMomOfASailor#47 &  NukeBoyzMom - Welcome first of all to the group. Be sure to sign up for your PIR groups, and friend each other. Your sailors will most likely be flying out together to SC. They will be in a group with a leader in charge of getting their transportation to GC from the airport.

I am having issues with my PM's sending or I would send you more information. but for now, I would make sure I plan to be as flexible as possible with plans for after PIR, and do all that you can to be able to meet them at the airport. You will be allowed to go to the gate with them and stay there until they fly out. This is also when you give them their phone and laptop.

  • JayDee659

CountryMom and NukeBoyzMom, I hope you two can meet up!  It's so nice to have someone to talk to at PIR.  Are you both going to Sarge's Meet & Greet?  He puts on an incredible evening of food & fun and great information.  My daughter's then boyfriend won a challenge coin for dancing.  Ah, the memories....

  • Chipmunk

CountryMomOfASailor#47 - we drove 12 hours to our PIR. Left after hubby's work on Wed and split the drive. Got to GL on Thur in time to get to Sarge's Meet n Greet. We didn't have to go pick up tickets for PIR, though. We ended up driving to RTC for PIR which proved a good idea since there were delays with his liberty time. See if you can read through former comments, there were recent comments on liberty.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Monday!

The website is still having issues with posting comments.  I've been working with the ad agency who has been in contact with Ning but unfortunately it's still not resolved.  Hopefully today - fingers crossed!

CoTwin - continuing to keep you in our prayers as you deal with the loss of your sweet dad.

Also, please continue to keep the families involved in the Las Vegas shooting in your prayers.....it's going to be a long road ahead for many of the victims.

  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

Everyone about mild hazing - that unfortunate term was probably another one of "my bads".  My son didn't experience anything more than having to "stamp his mattress" or "salute the cat".  It is all in good fun.  It is NOTHING like the college campuses version of hazing.  It is also nothing like decades ago Navy "hazing".  My son just crossed the Equator and the mild fun they had there is nothing like the experiences my dad told me about this weekend that happened decades ago.

I apologize if I caused anyone undo concern.  I've tried to post this 2 times earlier but Navy 4 Moms wouldn't let me.

  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

Lovely!  3 times posted on this one when it wouldn't let me post anything 2 times earlier!  Sorry!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Welcome to our newest members ~ charlie434, M&MsProudNavyMom and CountryMomOfASailor#47!

Please be sure to read the pages to the right (10) under the member profiles, especially "Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival to GC".  Also, take time to go through the discussion forum above (hit "view all") and you will find lots of good info there too.  And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have!

CountryMomOfASailor - in the nuke group here everyone goes directly to Goose Creek, SC for A school.  They will stay in SC for both A school and Power School.  The 3rd school, Prototype, can be done in either SC or Ballston Spa, NY. The whole process from BC to proto grad takes roughly 2 years.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

TX Mom - I deleted the duplicate posts for you!  Yep, this is crazy the issues we are having with the site right now ~ sigh.  I hope we can get it resolved today!

Also, any time you want you can delete your own post - there is a little "x" in the upper right hand corner of your comment.  Click on that and it deletes the post!
