Chipmumk - the good thing is that my nuke actually communicates fairly well in person and does a bit better on video calls than texting. We always get excited if it's more than 1 word or even a word with a lot of letters. :-)
J's/S'smom - I hear you too on the answering several question in one text with one word answers for each. And then I go back through the texts to see if I can figure out what he's answering - and sometimes he's skipped a question or 2 so I can get some really strange ideas of what he means. :-)
I am so glad I am not alone with my "yeah" sailor.
Submom: Our nuke stayed at Ansley Commons in Ladsen for Prototype. Gated community, which was a new experience for him. But they have a pool & exercise room. It made proto a little more enjoyable. Then there was the alligator out by the pond.
Thanks for the tips for housing in Charleston. Yes, son is an officer so he won’t be living on base. He is looking for the most economical route. He is married, but my daughter-in-law is in pharmacy school in Atlanta. They will be paying for 2 places. Someone had recommended military by owner, but I found houses only. Is there a site with rooms to rent or search for roommates?
TxMomEPT - She will be tired, but also will be needing to go shopping at the mini NEX @ NNPTC probably for her laundry soap, etc. It will be a weekend of setting up her bunk and such. If there is already a bunkmate who has been there, hopefully she will give your daughter some pointers. Tell her not to slack off on her strictness and discipline that she gained in BC. Some chiefs don't mind as much, but others will, so continue to hold to a high standard. If she is ET, then she will have to have her stripes on her uniform changed to the proper color (unless the dress blues don't have the same issue.) If she is MM or EM, then the FN stripes are correct. Be sure to check out my discussion above - Nuke A School daily schedule - there is a lot of info - the discussion has been added to. - You will have time to talk but she will also be busy acclimating. Welcome to GC (Goose Creek). Also read - Sailor's schedule upon arrival at GC to the right.
Submom-pwm, it has been years since my son went to Officer Candidate School. I remember other Officer further along the pipeline would “hand down” vacant rooms in apartments where other officers were renting. Has he contacted others in his class or classes ahead of him. There was one apartment complex in particular with many officers. Send me a friend request, i’ll Try and find complex name. He could call management.
My son will be graduating from boot camp soon and I am wondering what he will need when going to GC. Is their things I could purchase for him and send with him after graduation when we meet at the airport? Also if anyone has any ideas for grad presents and christmas ...things he would find enjoyable or need. Thanks :))
proudwinavymom and all other new moms - there are two discussions above that may help as you read through them. 2017 A School needs - Info, and Nuke A school daily schedule - sailor's perspective . There are also pages to the right with info: Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival to GC. I suggest only taking the bare minimum to the airport. They should be able to check another bag, however, they also have to be transported from airport to NNPTC, upon arrival in SC. So, definitely take cell phone and laptop if they have them. Their favorite pair of running shoes. Maybe one change of comfortable clothes, which they can only wear in their BEQ until they phase up. I will see about adding an additional comment to one of the above discussions.
I hope everyone had a good weekend - I worked on Christmas shopping and got a lot done :) Hubby & youngest went to the Chargers game on Sunday (early Christmas present) and they beat Cleveland - yay!
There is a conversation above that has some info on items needed when they get to GC - I'll bump it. They don't need much though....
Hi everyone! I don’t post much but I just got the call my son passed final exam for A school!! I’m so proud and excited for him! Disappointed we cannot attend graduation, but holidays will be here soon enough, My parents have passed so I couldn’t brag to them, but I knew the Navy Moms’s would celebrate with me!
Wink, congrats to your son, and don't worry about missing A school grad. It isn't worth travelling such a distance. Power School graduation is much more of a show. Celebrate when he comes home for Xmas, and treasure the time.
BZ to your son Wink! Maybe you can find someone to take pictures for you - or have your son hand his phone to another mom (or dad) and ask them to take a picture!
Wink5 - Congratulations!!! I understand all too well not being able to tell your parents, but I am sure they are rejoicing as well!
Welcome aboard new moms - proudwinavymom, Dee and minniejack.
Christmas is in the air, and it is an exciting time, especially for families who will be able to have their sailors at home and for those of you who won't, we thank you all for the sacrifices you and your families make to keep our home lands safe. We checked Captain Phillips out from the library and watched it the other night. I was reminded again of all the things our Navy does, that we never think about.
submom⚓️pwm - most of the officers room with friends from OCS/NSI/ROTC/whichever unit they are coming from. Certainly the most economical route. Most (that I know) live with one other roommate and some live with a lot more. He should be able to find some people who are looking for roommates.
Peachy Navy Mom- I don't know about quota but base police are the WORST (or the best...depending on how you think about it..) at getting you for going a few MPH over the speed limit. I have learned in the years we've lived here to always go the speed limit on base, always. They can revoke driving privileges on base. No, thank you! Your sailor will be fine...just needs to slow down a bit :)

Hi all - Happy Wednesday! It's Thursday for me - taking Friday off and going to Disneyland - can't wait :)
We've had bad winds and lots of fires burning - they aren't near where I live but closer to Los Angeles and Ventura. Numerous homes and structures have been lost - over 65,000 acres burned with no end in sight. Please keep the firefighters and the families involved in your prayers.
I can't get over the wildfires this year. CA has really suffered. You and your state are in my thoughts and prayers. Not to mention any of us with sailors on the west coast. Very scarey.
B'sNukeMoM⚓️MM - Enjoy your trip, thanks for the update on the fires - I don't pay as close attention to the news as I should and find out more things here on N4M about what is going on. Prayers for those in CA faced with the fires and fighting them as well.
Good morning ladies. I hope all of you take time to remember Pearl Harbor. It's sad that the "Day that will live in infamy" is fading away with the greatest generation.
On a lighter note, I found these awesome Tervis Tumblers and got one for my Nukette and Nuke-In-Law.
Aww JayDee that touched my heart. I know your nukette is married to a nuke so their separations are bound to be greater than someone whose spouse is nonmilitary, like my son. However, I can see that fitting for my son and his wife as well. Where did you find them?
Hi ladies! I’m new. My daughter has been in bc for a week. She’s doing Nuke after. I couldn’t be prouder. Just wanted to take a second and say hello! I’m looking forward to this adventure with her and all of you!
JayDee659 I believe she wants to do et. She said she wants to work with the reactors and the science part of it. Thank you for asking. What does your daughter do? I haven’t learned all the lingo yet. Lol
Raequel, my daughter is an MM. She is very hands on and likes to be physically as well as mentally busy. So far she feels that she's made the correct choice for her.
The lingo will come, I think there's a page somewhere here that will help with that but I find that I still don't understand what my daughter tells me most of the time. They talk in code and most of it is confidential so I don't get the whole story anyway. I just smile.
Raequel ⚓️ - Welcome aboard. My son is ET, see his comments in the discussion above of "Nuke A School daily Schedule- a sailor's perspective" - I believe there are 3 females in his ET class which is higher than average he said. Since there are only 3 females though, he remembers their names a lot easier. If she wants to work with the reactor and more science, then ET is what she will probably be asking for. But other moms will let you know that in the end it is the Navy's needs over our recruits wants, in the end.
Your daughter will not find out her Nuke rating until about week 5 or 6 of BC. Once you know, be sure to share with us, then you can connect with other Moms who have MM, EM, ET. They all have their nitch and specialty so it helps to connect with someone more familiar with your daughter's rating. She won't be alone, there were quite a few females in my son's PIR division who were also Nuke.
Thanks ladies! I completely understand that they will put her where they see best. I also know that my girl will do amazing no matter where she is placed!
I’ll be sure to share when I know! It’s great to have such a support system! I’m raising my kids basically on my own so my support is minimal. It’s a busy life lol. I feel blessed to have this place and all of you!
We are only a week into bc..just got the box the other day now waiting on the form letter.
Welcome Raequel! Our daughter is now in A school, she's an EM. This rate was chosen for her, but she also feels like it's a good fit. A question for the more experienced moms: our daughter likes hands-on more than straight academic work--will Power School involve more--or less--of the hands-on? Daughter can't wait for Prototype, when she thinks she'll actually be "doing something"!
My son found out after PIR that he won't be shipped out this weekend. Something missing in his medical file. He's worried about having to start in a later group of people he didn't go to boot camp with. Frustrating. Now I guess he stays in Great Lakes until they figure it out. Esproudmom, tell him not to worry. It usually takes them a week or two or even more to class up. My daughter was in GC two weeks before she started A school.
Depending on the rate it could be longer. My son is an ET and he was in GC for a month before he classed up. He was picking up garbage while he waited!!
Im new to the group. My son left for bc last week on the 6 of Dec. I am still awaiting his box and PIR date. I am so excited for his journey. I have gained so much information through this site and the various groups. Looking forward to meeting with some of you in the beginning of Feb!?!

As far as being "in class" with his division mates, many are not in class with their Div or TG mates. Once the arrive at GC, they are put in INDOC.
