Good morning Everyone - my sons PIR was 9/22/17 and I haven't received his Keel yet.  He ordered package A so I know one is included.  I did receive his DVD.  Has anyone else from that PIR date received theirs.  Happy Friday!

  • CSW

Happy Friday everyone...remember it's RED day!

    Remember Everyone Deployed.

Getting closer to Christmas and seeing some of our sailors on leave!  For those who don't get leave we need to remember them in prayers.

    10 days until Christmas :)

My son ordered a lot of stuff from BC back in April and had it sent to his father. Unfortunately, not everything showed up and my ex is too irresponsible to help me figure out what's missing. Apparently some frames and things did get there, but no pictures at all. Hopefully my son can figure it out over the holiday break, since he'll actually be there. I've called to figure it all out but all they could give me were the tracking numbers, saying everything was sent. The tracking numbers all say everything was delivered. So frustrating. Eight months after BC and I still don't have any pics. He spent almost a whole paycheck on them, too.

  • TahoeZephyr

Chipmunk - Thanks for the tip on checking the NEX for the division flag photo - I did not realize they were available; I did order a few copies of his division flag challenge coin as they were listed as a purchase option on the hard copy order sheet that came with the photos; have not received them yet, even though they were part of the same order as the DVD.  I also ordered a sweatshirt from Division Apparel with one side of the division flag on the back for my husband - that came very quickly and it's really nice!

  • JayDee659

My husband and I just finished a tour of the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum. It's the largest air force museum and it was an incredible experience. We saw the Imax movie "Aircraft Carrier". They had some cool footage and even showed an animated tour of the reactor, explaining the importance of nuclear power. If you have a chance I highly recommend it.

Hope this help ladies - I found this in the N4M site under - (this is only a partial snip-it)   ‘Division T-Shirts, Graduation Photos, The Keel, and DVD of PIR’

The Keel – the “yearbook” for your Sailor’s recruit division, sometimes called the Cruise book – includes photos of your Sailor's recruit division and brother division if there was one within a black and white section at the back. There are colored photos to remind your Sailor of things that happened while at the RTC. The Keel is only available for purchase during boot camp, on the day of PIR, and during that weekend. They only print up the exact quantity that is ordered and prepaid so you will not be able to order it after PIR weekend. The Keel is included free with Photo Package A or it can be purchased separately for $29. The Keel is mailed about 12 or 13 weeks after PIR – the recruit indicates the address it is mailed to. You cannot order The Keel over the phone. You must do that in person at the NEX the weekend of PIR if your Sailor did not order one. The Keel is included free with package A if ordered on the day of PIR.

Wow - a bunch of you have joined the Emptynester group!  Glad to see you over there!

Some of you will remember we had a problem with the website a year or so ago and the ad agency started deleting inactive members because we were running out of room.

Well, one of the problems that happened was if a member was deleted that had created a group - our Nuke group, the Emptynester group, and many more for example - when they were deleted it removed the group from the "Latest Activity" feed that is on the left side of the main page.  So before you could see if someone had commented and when, now you only find out if you actually go to those groups or you may get an email notification if you belong to the group.  And there's nothing we can do about it.  You just have to watch your group for activity.  The other thing you can do is to click on "all groups" at the top of the page.  That brings up every group on N4M.  From there you can use the drop down menu and change it to read "latest activity" and you can see when the latest post was made to a group.  It just requires extra work...

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

So I would suggest when you have a chance take a look at all the groups that are on here.  You may find some that interest you and are active, but they don't show up in the feed so you don't even know they exist!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

JayDee - the tour sounds like fun!  I'm going to keep my eye out for the movie - I would love to see that.

  • Proud Parent of 3 Sailors

@KayCee my son graduated 8/4 and I received his keel like a month ago. I think it takes like 4 months.

  • KayCee

Proud Parent of 3 - thank you for the info.  That makes me feel better.

  • devesmom

So, we are at Great Lakes and just finished with graduation. We are wondering if we can meet him at the ohare terminal 2 USO around 8 am to give him electronics and hang out instead of 3:30 am. We probably won't go to the gate because he doesn't leave until 6:30 pm! And we need to be on the road home. Thoughts?
  • JayDee659

Devesmom I don't think that will be a problem at all.

  • Chipmunk

devesmom - - They will most likely have all of the sailors get their boarding tickets and such early. (Not certain in the later flights) but you will want to make sure he doesn't go through security before you get there.

  • Kbpoohbear

My son was called yesterday, he was accepted into the Nuke program. After years of working toward this goal he is one more step closer. Now to find out if this changes his ship date.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Great news Kbpoohbear!  Was his ship date soon?  It could still change - be flexible!

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom it was great! There are some pics on my fb page. We got to tour the Kennedy Era Air Force One. Same one where Johnson took his oath of office.

  • Kbpoohbear

His ship out date is in 4 weeks but because of the holiday we won't know if it will change until 2018. I am sure it will change but I hope it doesn't push it back too far.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

JayDee - I'll definitely look at your pics tonight.

Kbpoohbear - well hopefully it doesn't change by much.  I hope he's ready just in case it doesn't!

We're off to Disneyland again tomorrow (the 2nd day of our 2 day passes!).

    Have a good weekend!

  • Chipmunk

JayDee659 - We toured the museum when my sailor was 4 years old and my youngest was a baby. It was very impressive, too much to get all in a day with 5 children in tow, and also Daddy had finished with a conference, but it was still neat.

Kbpoohbear - Glad to hear the good news!

  • JayDee659

    Great picture Pattip!

Our sailor has been to the museum many times with her ROTC unit in high school. We really enjoyed it. We did one guided tour and were very impressed. Wish we lived closer so I could take more time and go back more often.

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

We are in South Carolina. It is so awesome to finally be able to see our sailor son. I have missed him. We are proud that he has made it through the first part of Nuke school. He actually doesn't start Power School until March. I know it will be nice not to have to stress about the coursework for the next couple of months. I wish he could come home to visit, but he will be here for the first part of holiday stand down. I am not sure if he is planning on coming home during the second half. He may be off to visit his GF. I do remember when I was his age, so I do understand.

  • Chipmunk

TahoeZephyr - I would call about the division flag coins. They don't make a lot of those either, but I believe they are shipped out from the NEX. That would be something to inquire about, especially since you already received your DVD.

  • TahoeZephyr

Chipmunk - thanks for the suggestion regarding the challenge coins; I will probable touch base with the NEX this week to inquire about the status; would like to have them by Christmas as one is for Grandma :)  Our son arrives home mid-day tomorrow for his 2 weeks of leave - can't wait!  Working on a fun "Welcome Home" sign :)

  • momterp

The DVD came today via FedEx--perfect timing as our sailor flies in tonight for the holiday stand down-yay! For those of you with sailors coming home for the holidays, enjoy every moment and for those of you with sailors who will be far away my thoughts are with you. We know that holidays without our son present are most likely in our future but we're grateful for this year--it's certainly the longest he has ever been away from home.

  • Chipmunk

For any of you that don't watch NCIS (the original show), I would recommend you watching this week's 12/12/17 episode. It is a good reminder of family and struggles of kids with parents and parents with kids, but also a tribute to our service men and women. It had some touching moments of respect and even sometimes dishonor, but well done. I appreciated it more, now that my son is serving. - We just pull it up on the internet on CBS without their access.

And thank you, to all the moms and families who are doing without their sailors, this holiday, so that some of us can have ours nearby. Our turn is coming.

momterp - glad to hear that your DVD arrived today!!

I also have enjoyed the recent pictures as well.

  • bigsky21

    Look who’s home! I’m a happy mama today :)

  • TahoeZephyr

    Mine's home too! :)

  • ProudOfK

momterp - we just picked K up at the airport about 2 hours ago (actually we met him there and his girlfriend picked him up but then they came by here).  Enjoy your time with J.

It's so good to have him in the house.  And tonight we're going with him to see a play (Miracle on 34th Street) at his old high school - an especially fun thing to do since K was in drama all through high school.

K wasn't the only one from the navy flying into our small town on his flight today.  One of his Choir classmate's sister (through school choir we know the mom quite well) flew in coming from Japan and one of his DEP buddies that's now also an ET in the same Power School class (different division) were also on the flight.  It was like old Navy home week at the airport.

Happy Holidays to all you fellow navy moms out there - you're much appreciated.

  • ProudOfK

    Bigsky21 - that's a fantastic picture - and what a handsome son you have!

  • PacNWmom

A few years ago we (my 2 kids and I) started a new tradition. Instead of buying gifts indiscriminately, each person receives 4 gifts: Something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read.

As many of you know, my son is in the STA-21 program, and is now attending college. While he has more space than he would if he were on a ship or a sub, it is still very limited. He is always a challenge to buy for, partly because he's not at all materialistic, and rarely has a list of things he wants/needs. This year I'm really struggling with the "something you need" category. Anyone have suggestions? One thing I'm considering is giving a donation to an organization that benefits our brave sailors. Any suggestions? I know the USO does a lot, but I'm wondering what others are out there.

Because my sailor is in college he'll be home for 2.5 weeks starting tomorrow night. I'm feeling extremely lucky to get him for both Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. I'll be sure to get and give hugs for all you moms who don't have boots in the house this holiday season. HoHoHo!

  • Chipmunk

PacNWmom - I found a backpack laundry bag for my son (which is sister who is in college was given so she didn't have to buy a present for him), his favorite razors, some white handkerchiefs, two zip up suit bags ($ tree - wasn't sure if he needed them, but still works), lint rollers, and a Tide to Go pen. And at the Hallmark store, I found a magnetic clip on cup or wallet or cell phone holder, he can wear on his pants or over his bicycle handle bars, and a cool light I also found there, that has either a large magnet clip or a little hanger, so he can hang from his bed or bunk.

For reading well I bought lots of books for him, that most will stay at home, but I was buying used books of his favorite authors, but I bought all of my children W. Phillip Keller's books A Shepherd looks at Psalms 23, because it can be used as a short devotional for them. Oh and a sewing kit!! - Maybe they give them one in BC, but not sure so found one for him. Enjoy your time with your son.

Too all the others glad for safe arrivals, mine will be home as well and I am looking forward to a good long hug. Great pictures!

  • momterp

ProudOfK - Good to know that K made it home and you're already enjoying your time together. Ours arrives in about 2 hours (his sister and brother-in-law have airport shuttle duty). J said his flights had a lot of Navy personnel on them too, as well as at least one who will be on his last leg of his journey. "It's beginning to look (& feel) a lot like Christmas", to borrow a line from a famous song!

For those familiar with California, you will be amused to know that my sailor has said he needs to stop at In 'n Out on his way home from the airport! :)

  • Rebecca J

Boots in the house. I am one happy mama. I wish I could freeze time right now. I love seeing all of your pictures. If I can get my son to cooperate, I'll post one by Christmas. All of you that have sailors home now enjoy every moment. I'm thinking of those who are missing their sailors this holiday season.
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Have my two guys home!! They rarely see each other these days. One is out of the navy now, Can you guess which one? He now lives in Alaska. Brought me lots of Salmon, Cod, Halibut and Moose. The girl is just a friend.

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Hope Everyone enjoys their visits, either in person or via phone.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

  • JayDee659

COTwin what a great picture! Everyone looks happy and healthy, enjoy your time!

I just got the best call, my sailor is back from her underway. I've really missed her this time so I was excited to her a her ring tone on my phone. It's now starting to feel like Christmas since I know shes back.

  • ProudOfK

COTwin - it was really nice to hear an update on your boys and that they are both home.  This also made me think about KAMmom.  KAMmom - wondering how you're doing - I know this must be a difficult time - I hope you have lots of family around you.

  • MoMom

  • Chipmunk

MoMom - Nice looking set of young men you have there!!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Good grief! I was wondering why I wasn't hearing from my navy moms only to learn I was no longer following. GAH! Now I have many pages to read. I'll be incommunicado for a while, ladies.

  • NoahsMom

Hello Moms. I have a couple questions that are probably really silly but I still feel very lost in this whole process.

I know my son won't be able to have a car when he goes to basic training but how about when he actually attends training in SC? I am thinking no but wanted to be sure.

Are your sailors who are still in school/training able to come home for the holidays?

Thanks for your help everyone. I am enjoying the posts even though I am still trying to figure out what the acronyms mean! LOL

  • JayDee659

NoahsMom, there aren't any silly questions!  Once they get to Goose Creek and are finally in class (that could take anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks) they start phasing up.  Each time they phase up they earn something like wearing civilian clothing, leaving the base overnight, having a car.  The timing varies upon each class.  My daughter eventually took her car to GC.  She arrived in early November and drove her car back to GC after her Christmas trip home.

  • NoahsMom

Thank you! I had no idea!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Monday!

Oh I love seeing all the pictures and hearing about the visits!  Enjoy!!!  My son is in the air right now - but he's on his way to MI to spend the next 2 weeks with his GF.  I won't complain though because they both came to CA last Christmas (and we just got to see them both in November!).

NoahsMom - like JayDee said, there are no silly questions!  Ask away - my son didn't get his car until a week before he finished power school - and then it was because he was heading to Proto in Ballston Spa and needed it at that point!

NancyJo - I was wondering why we hadn't heard from you lately.  I should have sent you a message lol!

PattiP - only a few more months until your's is done :)  Any more word on his plans?

    7 days until Christmas!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

momterp - Oh I get the In-N-Out.  It was our first stop on the way home from the airport last year when B came home!

  • Chipmunk

B- You picked a doozy cartoon this time!!

NancyJo - we just figured you were enjoying all of your grandbabies!! - I have found myself accidently turn off "following" as well. It seems like no on is out there, when they really are.

NoahsMom - Welcome to our group. I actually talked to my son about cars and phasing up a week or so ago. He is currently in A school and he said that a sailor may have their car at GC, but they can't actually drive it until they phase up. Evidently, someone else can drive them in their car (who would be allowed to drive) but they can't. Just thought I would mention that if others are trying to figure out the logistics of getting a car to GC or not.
