Boy - I got way behind so I am just responding to things as I get to them - forgive me if someone already covered this. Regarding color of strips - when they are wearing white uniforms ETs have blue strips and if they are wearing their dress blues the ETs have white strips. I can promise you that my son and all of the other ETs we saw at PIR had their blue stripes - they did not need to get them changed when they got to GC - my guess is that that was just a fluke that they ran out of one color of stripes. My guess is they can as easily run out of red stripes. Anyway I have not heard anyone else ever mention here or in any of the facebook groups I'm in that they didn't get the right color of stripes as an ET at bootcamp.
Just read thru all the discussions here... heavens to Betsy y’all it’s all Greek to me!
Reading everything I can to try to make heads or tails outta all this, but have no clue if he’s MM ET EM or anything. He’s still in BC...I don’t think he knows what he is yet.
Also is there a Dr Seus version of all this? my brain is seriously on overload capacity right about now.
ProudOfK- Thanks for your response on the suffixes. I will be sure to correct it in the discussion group above (may be later though). I sort of drilled my son, when I talked to him and even called him back before actually posting so I will have to let him know that he had it backwards.
Regarding the color of the strips, it could be they ran out of the navy blue at RTC - but in Aug '17 they had issued all of the Nukes red stripes for their white dress uniforms and at least one of the ET moms after me said her son had to change his stripes when he got to GC as well. So, it could have just been a fluke situation, and I will quit harping on it. But it was also one of those "challenge / need to be right & correct it" type of things for my son (he gets it from both his father and I), that he had to just stand down with his Recruit Chief, but when he got to GC and they told him to change his stripes (he was also dealing with trying to get shoe polish out of his whites, etc. before taking to uniform shop) and he asked his Chief there, they commented that RTC is constantly giving ETs the wrong stripes, so I figured it was an ongoing type of thing and mostly wanted other moms with sons like mine to save themselves from a confrontation with a recruit chief. It was a big deal for my son, so I guess I have focused on it more. Thanks for sharing that it hasn't always been an issue.
Tracie - A lot of this will make more sense once your son is at GC. It is also why I am trying to put comments up in my discussion above, and sometimes it takes all of us moms working together to figure out things between what our sailors tell us and what others have experienced. Then again everyone experiences something different so our responses can also be different.
If you asked a question and it didn't get answered, be sure to ask again, it might have gotten lost in our chatter.
MoMom- thanks, I thought I was so focused on him leaving for BC I missed something
Chipmunk- the information and chatter here is great it really helps me understand what all I need to understand still and gives me something to focus on instead of how much I miss him. Plus I can just imagine his grin when his mom writes in the proper lingo, that’s about the time he’d pat top of my head and say awww, good try mom.
Hello Ladies! I'm just now catching upon 2 day's worth of commentary (despite the sad snow conditions in Tahoe, I just had to get in some turns yesterday!). So much great information here :) Re: class # - my son is an EM, class #1808-M; he graduated BC 11/3/17, went straight to GC the next day, and I believe classed up 11/13/17; with the Christmas break and what seems to have been an additional week off due to weather issues the first week of January, my calendar suggests he should be on track for A School graduation 5/18/18. Re: stripes - with and EM rate, his stripes were red at BC graduation, and I believe they stay red, but I'm not positive about that.
So, now that TahoeZephyr has responded that her son is an EM with class #1808-M, so I know it is current for the new fiscal year, I am going with what all of the moms said, and I stand corrected and will fix it in the discussion group above. I was talking to my son on the phone while I was in the car (I wasn't driving) and he was either in the lounge or galley, because he kept being distracted by saying hi to people.
And yes MM & EM's are FN (firemen) so they maintain red stripes.
JayDee659- maybe some creative person will make a Dr. Seuss version!! I trust your husband is doing better today.
Good morning All! I just wanted to comment on the experience my son had with stripes. He is an ET and had PIR 9/22. At the time of graduation he had red stripes on his dress whites. He had told us that once he got to GC he was going to have to take them in and have them changed. I did ask him at the time why they weren't correct initially - I can't remember exactly his reply but it had to do with that's the way they wanted it.
Thank you Tom for your input. That makes sense to me.
Hey All, love all the posts. My son is an ET and is class 1749-T. He says that their graduation was March 9th but now most likely will be postponed a week to March 16. Anyone else have a sailor in the class? Anyone else going to their A school graduation? We will, would love to meet any of you who might be going.
Hope everyone has a really amazing day! Got my fingers crossed and my knees bent in prayer for a phone call this weekend to try out all these new words and acronyms.
Hawaiian Islands received an Amber Alert this morning (which turned out to be false), for a ballistic missile threat, and to take cover immediately. Both our sailor at JBPHH and our nephew at UH (on another island) received them. I am sure all the island folks are a bit shook up right now.
Congrats, Pooh’s Mom! I read often from my phone and just have a hard time posting from it.
Much belated thanks (don’t think my previous attempt to post went thru) for all the help about getting my Sailor the forgotten neckerchief for his grandfather’s funeral. He borrowed one from the local recruiter’s office and was able to wear his dress blues as a pall bearer. Made us, esp dad, so proud to watch him stand at attention at the graveside service during Taps and rest of the military honors for my father-in-law!
My Sailor is now finishing up at Prototype in GC. He passed comps about a week or so ago. Has a few more items to get checked off and then Boards.
Mother Nature has sure played havoc with his GC time...2 hurricane delays and a snow storm! Plus the time off for minor surgery in 2016 and the funeral leave after Thanksgiving. He ready to be done!
I am selfishly hoping that he takes and passes Boards between next Saturday and and the following Friday morning as I will be in town for work. Now that they are not doing graduation for Prototype and his girlfriend left for Washington at least we might be able to celebrate!
It looks like we've had lots of chatter about the class numbering system but I think it's figured out now lol!
Tulip - Good luck to your Sailor - keep us posted on his comps. And he should be getting his orders soon. I'm glad that everything worked out for his grandfather's funeral. My son was able to be in uniform during my step dad's funeral too and he was able to present the military flag to my mom. It was very touching and I'll never forget it.
Same for you Pooh'sMom - orders should be coming soon :)
Buzzbeck - boy the situation in Hawaii sure was frightening. I can't even imagine the fear that everyone would have felt. I'm glad it was a mistake, but boy that's a mistake that should NEVER happen.
My bosses sister in law passed away on Saturday from complications from the flu - she was 57. She got sick on Thursday (she lives near Lake Havasu, AZ). Her husband took her to the ER and they gave her a shot and sent her home. On Friday she was having difficulty breathing and they went back to the ER - her heart stopped and they airlifted her to a hospital in Las Vegas. Her heart stopped 3 more times and she passed away early Friday evening. They said she had double pneumonia. This flu is really bad. I hope everyone is staying healthy - wash your hands often and be careful. Please keep my boss and his family in your prayers.
Hi everyone! I have been out of touch for a while so I am trying to catch up on all the chatter. I would like to chime in on the stripe color. I have story regarding this subject. My son's PIR was 10/20/17 and he is an ET. His uniform had red stripes, as all the NUKES had red stripes I didn't think it was a big deal. I had actually written to my son and told him that he would probably have red stripes and not to worry about it because I have heard many get them changed once they get to GC. For him though it turned out to be a problem. He was an honor graduate and they were going to be announcing him at PIR as a Seaman and his Chief told him "you need to fix that" . He was like "How am I supposed to do that?" Its takes about 3 days for them to replace stripes and he only had 2 days to PIR sooooo he traded shirts with another guy in his division that already had white stripes. So he had the white stripes for PIR and then switched shirts back afterwards and then had the stripes changed when he got to GC! LOL!! Sempre Gumby as they say!! Got to be flexible and think out of the box. Just had to share that crazy story!
So sorry to hear. My condolences to you and your entire family. Wow, I've heard how bad the flu is. Yikes, everyone wash your hands often throughout the day!!!
I just put up a new page **NUKE LINGO on the right. It's info from another mom that found it in one of the FB groups. It doesn't have anything "classified", it's all general knowledge and it explains some of what we've been talking about. Take a look at it if you have a minute.
B'sNukeMom, I'm sorry to hear about your bosses SIL. It's scary when they miss things like that and it happens all too frequently.
We got pounded with snow on Friday and then last night we got a few more inches. Apparently there's another band of snow heading our way. Makes for crazy driving but the skiing yesterday was incredible. Looks like the snow will stick around until Saturday when it will get in to the 50's. Hard to believe that it was 0 degrees when I hit the slopes yesterday morning. In a weeks time it will be 50 degrees warmer. Hate the roller coaster.
JayDee - crazy weather indeed. We were at almost 80 over the weekend - beautiful weather. Mid 70's this week and Friday it's supposed to be 58*. (I know that's not cold compared to where you're at, but it's cold for here!) It is crazy how the weather is just all over the place - up/down, hot/cold. It's no wonder so many are getting sick too.
CSW - I don't think anything will change as far as graduation. I'll keep my ears open just in case.
Thank you JayDee and soccermom for the condolences.
B'sNukeMoM: Glad to hear B got his luggage with all in tact. Prayers for your boss' SIL; how scary and sad!
PattiP: I will be in the Cincy area soon. I will PM you to see if we can meet.
JayDee: prayers for your husband. Hopefully it is nothing serious. I had something similar a couple of years ago and it took a few days but they finally decided it was gird. A few months of stomach meds and care with my diet and the symptoms disappeared. But it took them a while to rule out heart issues.
More snow expected here in Memphis tonight--between 1 and 3". Friday's ice and 1/8" finally melted today. Memphis doesn't know how to deal with snow that lasts more than a few hours. LOL
Tulip, My son came for my Dad's Funeral this fall. He so wanted to wear his uniform at the military service for my Dad, a WWII vet, navy. Dress blues are in order for the grave side service. My son has been in Hawaii now a few years and they never wear the dress blues as it is just too warm there. He went to put it on and he no longer fit in it. My young man has grown in the last tree years. LOL. He went out and bought a suit to wear instead.
B'sNukeMom, love the pic! I had showed this same one to my daughter and her husband and they laughed and said it was pretty accurate.
My husband is going in on Thursday for some tests then we'll meet with a cardiologist on another day. At this point we don't know anything, but he feels fine. Thank you for all who have asked.
Wow J's/S's mom, that's alarming. What happens when someone "taps out"? Is it the end of their Navy career? I guess it's better if people self-select out of sub service if they don't think they can hack it.
Also good to know! It's so hard to put myself in my daughter's place, as she's different from me in many ways. Wanting to be on a submarine is one of those ways! I guess the expression "whatever floats your boat" is applicable here except, oh yeah, subs don't float do they? ;))
J's/S'smom gives great examples. This is why submarines are all volunteer. My son knew that subs were the last place he wanted to be and is glad to be on a carrier. There is a financial incentive since submariners get paid more but for some of the sailors it just isn't worth it. And SailorsLlMom, I think all of us can say our sailors have amazed us over time. I worried about his lack of ambition and discipline. Now he's a different person with a responsible job and a family. He doesn't think like I do about many things but that's just life. The navy has been great for him. ps the fact that subs don't float freaks me out a little too ;O
Hey ya'll, I think the basic is that subs float just like airplanes fly. They don't. Propulsion is the magic ingredient. Gotta love those physics, they allow us to do the impossible. Now let's get those subs to to warp speed! Watch out Millenium Falcon, it's the flying sub!
When my kids were young they liked to conduct "experiments" to see if objects would sink or float. Those items that neither floated on the surface nor sank to the bottom were deemed to "Flink" (a combination of sink and float). That's how I think of subs, I'm pretty sure they "flink". ;)
Hi everyone. .I haven't posted in a awhile, but I was just reading all of the sub comments. My son is headed to USS Colorado. He is stationed at Groton, but will be going to.meet his sub in a few weeks. I'm trying not to worry about it. I've heard all kinds of stories. I hope it suits him. I didn't realize you were out of the navy if you couldn't tolerate it.
Please be sure to read the pages to the right (12) under the member profiles - you'll find lots of helpful info there. Also take a look at the discussion forum above (hit "view all"). OPSEC is always important and on Fridays we wear RED! And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Scary, really. Sub duty is surely a step that has to be taken carefully, so much is at stake. Thank you!

Well, you're right...there's floating and then there's floating.Nothing is completely simple, is it? Thank y'all!

That's how I think of subs, I'm pretty sure they "flink". ;)
