    PattiP,
Thanks so much for the information!  Mine just finished ELT, and doesn't have orders yet.  Did your son stay in for 6 years?  8 years?

  • Tulip

Congrats, Pooh’s Mom! I read often from my phone and just have a hard time posting from it.

Much belated thanks (don’t think my previous attempt to post went thru) for all the help about getting my Sailor the forgotten neckerchief for his grandfather’s funeral. He borrowed one from the local recruiter’s office and was able to wear his dress blues as a pall bearer. Made us, esp dad, so proud to watch him stand at attention at the graveside service during Taps and rest of the military honors for my father-in-law!

My Sailor is now finishing up at Prototype in GC. He passed comps about a week or so ago. Has a few more items to get checked off and then Boards.

Mother Nature has sure played havoc with his GC time...2 hurricane delays and a snow storm! Plus the time off for minor surgery in 2016 and the funeral leave after Thanksgiving. He ready to be done!

I am selfishly hoping that he takes and passes Boards between next Saturday and and the following Friday morning as I will be in town for work. Now that they are not doing graduation for Prototype and his girlfriend left for Washington at least we might be able to celebrate!

    Love the cutout stories!

    Hi all - Happy Monday!

It looks like we've had lots of chatter about the class numbering system but I think it's figured out now lol!

Tulip - Good luck to your Sailor - keep us posted on his comps.  And he should be getting his orders soon.  I'm glad that everything worked out for his grandfather's funeral.  My son was able to be in uniform during my step dad's funeral too and he was able to present the military flag to my mom.  It was very touching and I'll never forget it.

Same for you Pooh'sMom - orders should be coming soon :)

Buzzbeck - boy the situation in Hawaii sure was frightening.  I can't even imagine the fear that everyone would have felt.  I'm glad it was a mistake, but boy that's a mistake that should NEVER happen.

My bosses sister in law passed away on Saturday from complications from the flu - she was 57.  She got sick on Thursday (she lives near Lake Havasu, AZ).  Her husband took her to the ER and they gave her a shot and sent her home.  On Friday she was having difficulty breathing and they went back to the ER - her heart stopped and they airlifted her to a hospital in Las Vegas.  Her heart stopped 3 more times and she passed away early Friday evening.  They said she had double pneumonia.  This flu is really bad.  I hope everyone is staying healthy - wash your hands often and be careful.  Please keep my boss and his family in your prayers.

Hi everyone! I have been out of touch for a while so I am trying to catch up on all the chatter. I would like to chime in on the stripe color. I have story regarding this subject.  My son's PIR was 10/20/17 and he is an ET. His uniform had red stripes, as all the NUKES had red stripes I didn't think it was a big deal. I had actually written to my son and told him that he would probably have red stripes and not to worry about it because I have heard many get them changed once they get to GC. For him though it turned out to be a problem. He was an honor graduate and they were going to be announcing him at PIR as a Seaman and his Chief told him "you need to fix that" . He was like "How am I supposed to do that?" Its takes about 3 days for them to replace stripes and he only had 2 days to PIR sooooo he traded shirts with another guy in his division that already had white stripes. So he had the white stripes for PIR and then switched shirts back afterwards and then had the stripes changed when he got to GC! LOL!! Sempre Gumby as they say!! Got to be flexible and think out of the box. Just had to share that crazy story!

I'm glad the alarm in Hawaii was a mistake!!

  • CSW

We're heading to GC for Powerschool graduation this week. Does anyone think there might be changes if Congress doesn't pass the budget?

  • soccermom19

    B'sNukeMoM⚓️MM

So sorry to hear. My condolences to you and your entire family.  Wow, I've heard how bad the flu is.  Yikes, everyone wash your hands often throughout the day!!!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

I just put up a new page **NUKE LINGO on the right.  It's info from another mom that found it in one of the FB groups.  It doesn't have anything "classified", it's all general knowledge and it explains some of what we've been talking about.  Take a look at it if you have a minute.

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom, I'm sorry to hear about your bosses SIL.  It's scary when they miss things like that and it happens all too frequently.

We got pounded with snow on Friday and then last night we got a few more inches. Apparently there's another band of snow heading our way.  Makes for crazy driving but the skiing yesterday was incredible.  Looks like the snow will stick around until Saturday when it will get in to the 50's.  Hard to believe that it was 0 degrees when I hit the slopes yesterday morning.  In a weeks time it will be 50 degrees warmer.  Hate the roller coaster.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

JayDee - crazy weather indeed.  We were at almost 80 over the weekend - beautiful weather.  Mid 70's this week and Friday it's supposed to be 58*.  (I know that's not cold compared to where you're at, but it's cold for here!)  It is crazy how the weather is just all over the place - up/down, hot/cold.  It's no wonder so many are getting sick too.

CSW - I don't think anything will change as far as graduation.  I'll keep my ears open just in case.

Thank you JayDee and soccermom for the condolences.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Forgot to mention - B got his luggage on Saturday - the airlines delivered it and everything was in it!  He was happy :)

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

JayDee - How is your hubby?  Have they been able to run more tests on him yet?

  • Tulip

B'sNukeMoM: Glad to hear B got his luggage with all in tact. Prayers for your boss' SIL; how scary and sad!

PattiP: I will be in the Cincy area soon. I will PM you to see if we can meet.

JayDee: prayers for your husband. Hopefully it is nothing serious. I had something similar a couple of years ago and it took a few days but they finally decided it was gird. A few months of stomach meds and care with my diet and the symptoms disappeared. But it took them a while to rule out heart issues.

More snow expected here in Memphis tonight--between 1 and 3". Friday's ice and 1/8" finally melted today. Memphis doesn't know how to deal with snow that lasts more than a few hours. LOL

  • bigsky21

Thanks for the NUKE LINGO B'sMom...it was really helpful!

So sorry to hear about your boss' SIL - we have had a lot of people at work out sick, but none seriously thank goodness.

  • MetroMom

proudNukemom my Sailor is also class 1749-T.  I sent you a friend request..  We are planning to attend A School graduation.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

NNLori - that was some quick thinking on your sons part!  Semper Gumby indeed - he'll do well in the Navy!

  • SailorsLIMom

Is anyone’s son/Daughter in 1743?  We’re going to the graduation on February 2.

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Tulip, My son came for my Dad's Funeral this fall. He so wanted to wear his uniform at the military service for my Dad, a WWII vet, navy. Dress blues are in order for the grave side service. My son has been in Hawaii now a few years and they never wear the dress blues as it is just too warm there. He went to put it on and he no longer fit in it. My young man has grown in the last tree years. LOL. He went out and bought a suit to wear instead.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Tuesday!

(Not trying to scare anyone - just a little nuke humor!)

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom, love the pic!  I had showed this same one to my daughter and her husband and they laughed and said it was pretty accurate.

My husband is going in on Thursday for some tests then we'll meet with a cardiologist on another day.  At this point we don't know anything, but he feels fine.  Thank you for all who have asked.

  • soccermom19

B'sNukeMoM⚓️MM - Great pic!!!  Happy Tuesday!!!

  • SailorsLIMom

Wow J's/S's mom, that's alarming. What happens when someone "taps out"?  Is it the end of their Navy career? I guess it's better if people self-select out of sub service if they don't think they can hack it.

  • SailorsLIMom

Scary, really.  Sub duty is surely a step that has to be taken carefully, so much is at stake.  Thank you!

  • SailorsLIMom

Also good to know!  It's so hard to put myself in my daughter's place, as she's different from me in many ways.  Wanting to be on a submarine is one of those ways!  I guess the expression "whatever floats your boat" is applicable here except, oh yeah, subs don't float do they? ;))

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

J's/S'smom gives great examples. This is why submarines are all volunteer. My son knew that subs were the last place he wanted to be and is glad to be on a carrier. There is a financial incentive since submariners get paid more but for some of the sailors it just isn't worth it. And SailorsLlMom, I think all of us can say our sailors have amazed us over time. I worried about his lack of ambition and discipline. Now he's a different person with a responsible job and a family. He doesn't think like I do about many things but that's just life. The navy has been great for him. ps the fact that subs don't float freaks me out a little too ;O

  • Paul

Oh God I hope subs float! Because the opposite of float is sink!
  • Paul

Subs just float a little bit deeper than boats
  • SailorsLIMom

Well, you're right...there's floating and then there's floating.Nothing is completely simple, is it?  Thank y'all!

  • JayDee659

Hey ya'll, I think the basic is that subs float just like airplanes fly.  They don't.  Propulsion is the magic ingredient.  Gotta love those physics, they allow us to do the impossible.  Now let's get those subs to to warp speed!  Watch out Millenium Falcon, it's the flying sub!

  • PacNWmom

When my kids were young they liked to conduct "experiments" to see if objects would sink or float. Those items that neither floated on the surface nor sank to the bottom were deemed to "Flink" (a combination of sink and float). That's how I think of subs, I'm pretty sure they "flink". ;)

  • proudNukemom

     B'sNukeMoM⚓️MM Luv the Photo!

MetroMom and TxnukeMama I look forward to meeting up with you all in March (hopefully the 16th) for A grad for class 1749-T in GC !

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Haha - "flink" - I like that!

  • Rebecca J

Hi everyone. .I haven't posted in a awhile, but I was just reading all of the sub comments. My son is headed to USS Colorado. He is stationed at Groton, but will be going to.meet his sub in a few weeks. I'm trying not to worry about it. I've heard all kinds of stories. I hope it suits him. I didn't realize you were out of the navy if you couldn't tolerate it.

Hi Everyone! I am getting more and more excited for my sons expected graduation in February. I have decided to get him a Casio G Shock Watch because it seems to be a good gift and I think it will be good for him at A School.  I looked and there are like 30 or more types of these watches!  Does anyone have a student at GC who has one of these watches? Or- is there a certain one anyone recommends?  I see black is best.

Thanks ladies for all your humor this week - has been a rough one!

  • Chipmunk

Kai Cat - Keep hanging in there. My son bought his own black Casio to replace the one that broke at BC, but it was not the expensive G Shock ones. He has not complained about it and buying at the NEX he didn't have tax on it which pleased him.

Chickpea13 - Welcome Aboard, be sure to share with us where you are in this Navy Nuke journey.

B'sNukeMom - thanks for sharing the picture - and glad to hear that B's luggage arrived.

PacNWmom - I will have to share "flink" with my kids!!

I appreciate the chatter regarding serving on the subs. My son does not want to be on a sub and has stressed that several times, but he continues to have people urge him to sign up. Primarily, because he would make more money. I am glad the various comments were shared, because now I realize again, I need to support my sailor's personal decisions and continue to make sure I am not pushing him into something he is uncomfortable with. I know there have been times in our kids lives where we needed to challenge them to "spread their wings", but I can see this is not a place to be challenging my sailor.

  • soccermom19

PacNWmom - "Flink" - love it!!!

  • Pooh'sMom

My son just got his orders for the Jimmy Carter.  Anyone else have a Jimmy Sailor?

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

PacNWmom, your "flink" story made me chuckle. Some families would never think of doing experiments for fun, then there are nuke families. I didn't even think twice at the time I read your post, but then I reflected that we are all the same here. Brainiac kids who are creative and always thinking. My family grew up talking science and history at the dinner table, and my daughter grew up to be a nuclear engineer with a minor in history, and my son is a nuke.

Pooh'sMom, congrats on the Jimmy Carter! Getting orders is a big deal. Hooyah!

  • ProudOfK

kai cat - we got the "Casio G-Shock GD-100-1B Watch" for my sons PIR gift.  He seems to like it.  He wears it most of the time on base I believe.

PacNWmom - loved your "flink" story.  Reminded me of a word my special needs daughter coined several years ago that we continue to use all the time.  The dog was licking her and it was tickling - she said Jake is "lickling" me.  Seems to describe it perfectly!

And while I'm on here I want to say thank you to J's/S'smom, NancyJo, JayDee659, PattiP and of course B'sNukeMom and any other of you long timers I may have missed here.  I find the different things that you share about your sailors and your experiences very helpful.  Thank you for all you share that helps us newer moms have some idea of what to expect.

  • Paul

I'm going to throw my personal experience and political viewpoint in here for just a second.

I do not think I would want to serve on the Jimmy Carter. It would likely suffer from overinflation and be destined to lackluster performance.

Having said that I also want to make it clear I am very proud of the crew of the Jimmy Carter as I am the crew of every other vessel!
  • JayDee659

Paul, thank you for that laugh.  Reminds me of a comment that my husband made.  I found a beer that I liked called "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".  A friend asked how I liked it.  Before I could answer my husband piped up with "it's heavy and leaves her with a sinking feeling".  rim shot

kai cat, we gave our daughter a Baby G Shock for her PIR graduation.  She LOVED it and wears it all the time.  It keeps track of different time zones, which I thought would come in hand on deployment.  When she was out on deployment she kept calling me at weird times and asking me what time it was here.  I finally asked her if her watch was lost and she said no, she had it and loved it, but it did so many things and she hadn't had time to figure out the time zones.  Ha.  But hey, she can call me whenever she wants to ask me what time it is here.  It makes my phone ring and that makes me smile.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Paul, I laughed out loud. Bwaahaaha

JayDee, you married a great wit. Too funny!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy Wednesday! (some more nuke/navy humor)

Pooh'sMom - congrats on your son's orders to the Carter :)

Paul - I also got a chuckle from comment  ;-D

kai cat - you won't go wrong with the Casio G Shock watch.

JayDee - good description of your beer - your husband was quick with that one lol!

NancyJo - how you holding up with this deployment?

Taking my mom to look at a home in a 55+ community this afternoon for her.  I hope that she likes it - it's time for her to get out of her neighborhood and get with some friends her age that she can hang out with.  Fingers crossed all goes well.

  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

b'sNukeMom - Love the comic!  My FIL is in an assisted living development.  I can say that regardless of where she moves, she'll only get what she puts into it.  My FIL doesn't attend any of the social activities, he just eats then sleeps in his private apartment.  He hates it there.  However, I see others there that have made friends and attend lots of activities and they seem to enjoy living there.  Best wishes for your mom!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Tx Mom - I agree with you wholeheartedly.  My step dad passed away 3 years ago and my mom just doesn't do much lately.  Her home is a little older with a very large lot and it's just too much for her.  Hubby and I go over often to help out but it's hard with working full time and taking care of our house.  The community she's looking at is a very active 55+ community and she seems to finally be in a better frame of mind where she wants to do some things.  I hope this is the case because I so want her to be happy.  We shall see what happens ;-D

  • Paul

My dad is 89 and in a community that is about a mile from both my brother and me. We handle all his financial business and let him do as he pleases. My mom has been deceased for 16 years. Dad has his own apartment and car. He does his meals there. He is getting forgetful which means bro and I must communicate more so we know what is happening. He can have his car until he either can't remember where he lives or until he has an accident. It's a good place for him to be and he seems to thrive. It's not for everyone but it works for him. Plus his community has advanced care as he needs it so he can go from independent to assisted to memory care to skilled care. And at the end he ends up beside my mom in the family plot. It's making the journey safe and comfortable that matters now.
  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

B'sNuke, good luck settling your mom in a new place. Everybody adapts differently. Most good places will try to involve her in things but it can be hard sometimes to be the new kid. She has you as a super supportive daughter (I know this by virtue of the conversations you and I have shared over the years!) and that makes a huge difference. Prayers her transition to that life is smooth. ps love the cartoon. LOL

Paul, sounds like Dad is in a good facility. We were blessed that our mother had purchased nursing home insurance. I don't know what we would have done otherwise and she and Dad were never particularly well off. She's been gone 2 yrs now and we kids feel good that she was well taken care of in her last years.

  • Son#2

    hello all!

bnuke-hope your mom likes the community!   good luck to her!!

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom, I do agree that you only get out of it what you want.  I've known people who thrive in their new surroundings, get involved and go places all the time.  They seem so happy.  Then there's the folks who just won't engage and they are just sad.  Hopefully your mom is the type who will get involved and enjoy some new friends.  I'm actually kind of jealous, I would love to live in an over 55 community and get to do all those activities!  One day soon, I'm sure, my kids are counting the days...
