Hi Everyone! I am getting more and more excited for my sons expected graduation in February. I have decided to get him a Casio G Shock Watch because it seems to be a good gift and I think it will be good for him at A School. I looked and there are like 30 or more types of these watches! Does anyone have a student at GC who has one of these watches? Or- is there a certain one anyone recommends? I see black is best.
Thanks ladies for all your humor this week - has been a rough one!
Kai Cat - Keep hanging in there. My son bought his own black Casio to replace the one that broke at BC, but it was not the expensive G Shock ones. He has not complained about it and buying at the NEX he didn't have tax on it which pleased him.
Chickpea13 - Welcome Aboard, be sure to share with us where you are in this Navy Nuke journey.
B'sNukeMom - thanks for sharing the picture - and glad to hear that B's luggage arrived.
PacNWmom - I will have to share "flink" with my kids!!
I appreciate the chatter regarding serving on the subs. My son does not want to be on a sub and has stressed that several times, but he continues to have people urge him to sign up. Primarily, because he would make more money. I am glad the various comments were shared, because now I realize again, I need to support my sailor's personal decisions and continue to make sure I am not pushing him into something he is uncomfortable with. I know there have been times in our kids lives where we needed to challenge them to "spread their wings", but I can see this is not a place to be challenging my sailor.
PacNWmom, your "flink" story made me chuckle. Some families would never think of doing experiments for fun, then there are nuke families. I didn't even think twice at the time I read your post, but then I reflected that we are all the same here. Brainiac kids who are creative and always thinking. My family grew up talking science and history at the dinner table, and my daughter grew up to be a nuclear engineer with a minor in history, and my son is a nuke.
Pooh'sMom, congrats on the Jimmy Carter! Getting orders is a big deal. Hooyah!
kai cat - we got the "Casio G-Shock GD-100-1B Watch" for my sons PIR gift. He seems to like it. He wears it most of the time on base I believe.
PacNWmom - loved your "flink" story. Reminded me of a word my special needs daughter coined several years ago that we continue to use all the time. The dog was licking her and it was tickling - she said Jake is "lickling" me. Seems to describe it perfectly!
And while I'm on here I want to say thank you to J's/S'smom, NancyJo, JayDee659, PattiP and of course B'sNukeMom and any other of you long timers I may have missed here. I find the different things that you share about your sailors and your experiences very helpful. Thank you for all you share that helps us newer moms have some idea of what to expect.
Paul, thank you for that laugh. Reminds me of a comment that my husband made. I found a beer that I liked called "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". A friend asked how I liked it. Before I could answer my husband piped up with "it's heavy and leaves her with a sinking feeling". rim shot
kai cat, we gave our daughter a Baby G Shock for her PIR graduation. She LOVED it and wears it all the time. It keeps track of different time zones, which I thought would come in hand on deployment. When she was out on deployment she kept calling me at weird times and asking me what time it was here. I finally asked her if her watch was lost and she said no, she had it and loved it, but it did so many things and she hadn't had time to figure out the time zones. Ha. But hey, she can call me whenever she wants to ask me what time it is here. It makes my phone ring and that makes me smile.
Hi all - Happy Wednesday! (some more nuke/navy humor)
Pooh'sMom - congrats on your son's orders to the Carter :)
Paul - I also got a chuckle from comment ;-D
kai cat - you won't go wrong with the Casio G Shock watch.
JayDee - good description of your beer - your husband was quick with that one lol!
NancyJo - how you holding up with this deployment?
Taking my mom to look at a home in a 55+ community this afternoon for her. I hope that she likes it - it's time for her to get out of her neighborhood and get with some friends her age that she can hang out with. Fingers crossed all goes well.
b'sNukeMom - Love the comic! My FIL is in an assisted living development. I can say that regardless of where she moves, she'll only get what she puts into it. My FIL doesn't attend any of the social activities, he just eats then sleeps in his private apartment. He hates it there. However, I see others there that have made friends and attend lots of activities and they seem to enjoy living there. Best wishes for your mom!
Tx Mom - I agree with you wholeheartedly. My step dad passed away 3 years ago and my mom just doesn't do much lately. Her home is a little older with a very large lot and it's just too much for her. Hubby and I go over often to help out but it's hard with working full time and taking care of our house. The community she's looking at is a very active 55+ community and she seems to finally be in a better frame of mind where she wants to do some things. I hope this is the case because I so want her to be happy. We shall see what happens ;-D
My dad is 89 and in a community that is about a mile from both my brother and me. We handle all his financial business and let him do as he pleases. My mom has been deceased for 16 years. Dad has his own apartment and car. He does his meals there. He is getting forgetful which means bro and I must communicate more so we know what is happening. He can have his car until he either can't remember where he lives or until he has an accident. It's a good place for him to be and he seems to thrive. It's not for everyone but it works for him. Plus his community has advanced care as he needs it so he can go from independent to assisted to memory care to skilled care. And at the end he ends up beside my mom in the family plot. It's making the journey safe and comfortable that matters now.
B'sNuke, good luck settling your mom in a new place. Everybody adapts differently. Most good places will try to involve her in things but it can be hard sometimes to be the new kid. She has you as a super supportive daughter (I know this by virtue of the conversations you and I have shared over the years!) and that makes a huge difference. Prayers her transition to that life is smooth. ps love the cartoon. LOL
Paul, sounds like Dad is in a good facility. We were blessed that our mother had purchased nursing home insurance. I don't know what we would have done otherwise and she and Dad were never particularly well off. She's been gone 2 yrs now and we kids feel good that she was well taken care of in her last years.
B'sNukeMom, I do agree that you only get out of it what you want. I've known people who thrive in their new surroundings, get involved and go places all the time. They seem so happy. Then there's the folks who just won't engage and they are just sad. Hopefully your mom is the type who will get involved and enjoy some new friends. I'm actually kind of jealous, I would love to live in an over 55 community and get to do all those activities! One day soon, I'm sure, my kids are counting the days...
JayDee - I would love to live in the community my mom is looking at! It's pretty new and there's so much to do. I told hubby we should think about - but, youngest is back at home so it's not an option (for) now.
Both my hubby and I agree that if we end up anywhere as nice as where his FIL is living, that we would be extremely lucky in our later years. It is a far cry from the "nursing home" that so many people think of. He's in a different city than us but we visit him every other weekend and take him home with us for a weekend once a month.
J's/S's - We are very proud of him. This is what he wanted, but he was realistic about knowing he would go where he was needed.
Now i need to figure out if there is anything he NEEDS for the sub. I say needs because I'm sure the Navy has provided all he needs. Maybe a few wants is what I'm looking for. Suggestions?
We got a call late yesterday afternoon that Big Kid passed his comp. Just need the ice on the roads to thaw out before we head to GC tomorrow for A school grad.
Pooh'sMom, soft orders often translate to hard orders so it can still happen. In the end, though, even hard orders can change to accommodate the needs of the navy.
PattiP, I remember your struggles with your dad. It was so hard. I prayed for your family. He's in a better place now.
So many of our sailors moving on through the pipeline! Safe travels, everyone! Bravo Zulu on your sailors' progress. Those of you who don't make it, it's OK. Many don't, especially for A school and proto grads. Sometimes you just can't. But you can share the joy with your sailor anyway and sometimes people get pictures for you.
Crazy weather after the deep freeze we have had. Unlike PattiP I enjoy the cold up to a point. I put my car window down Monday night and it was so cold it wouldn't go up again. I had to drive 20 minutes home in -2*, much of it on the Interstate going 60+ mph. After a night in the garage it went up again. That was a bit much.
My son told me last night that they ran their 5K in below 40' weather yesterday. I think he was pleased with his time, but said his calves were complaining. I am just glad they have it a little warmer there than we have been in OKC. These below freezing to 0' temps here, are just not fun. But at least we don't have ice!!
It's been a busy week, but I have empathized, prayed, and laughed at all comments as they have posted.
J's/S'smom, I'm with you...I was born in California but grew up in the midwest. I've now been in Florida for 14 years and would be perfectly happy if I never saw snow again lol! I do go to my dad's in Wisconsin for Christmas every year and that little bit of snow and cold is enough :) Sledding was fun though - one of the local parks had a toboggan slide that ended up on a little bayou of the Rock River and I still remember them driving city trucks out on the ice to make sure it was safe to open the slide!
For all those complaining about cold temps and snow, I am with you!!! I want to retire to sunny SoCal. Sooooo tired of this cold weather. I'm too old for this!!!! :-)
Congrats to families and their sailor(s) who are moving on.
Hi all - Happy Thursday! (some more nuke humor for the MM's in the group)
Well I'm just a big crybaby (ok sissy) 'cuz I'm born & raised in SoCal and I think its' too cold here lol! I know I have nor right to complain though when I see what so many of you others are going through - I don't know how you do it! B said his school was shut down again yesterday because VA was getting more snow. They just don't have the infrastructure to deal with the snow.....
NancyJo - oh my, driving home with your window down and then it getting stuck - nope, not something I want to experience! Glad it finally thawed out ;-D
Things went well at the retirement community with my mom yesterday. The homes are beautiful but at the moment there aren't any available of the plan she wants. The RE guy said it changes literally weekly so hopefully something will come up soon. The community center was awesome - I seriously would move in there if it was closer to my work lol. So keep your fingers crossed something comes up for her and we can get her moved and then get her house sold - shouldn't be too much of an issue selling as it's a huge sellers market right now. It's just a matter of getting 25 years worth of stuff out of her house (and figuring out what to do with it lol!).
LOL B'sNuke! Yep, that's pretty much all we need to know too, along with you can fix everything with either WD-40 or duct tape.
I'm so glad to hear that your mom might have found the perfect place. Is it closer to you, too? Does it have a pool, because if I lived in SoCal I would want the pool like you have now. Fingers crossed it works out!
It's got everything! Pool, spa, fitness center, indoor walking track. Every kind of social group/club you can imagine. She's really interested in the camping club, the quilting/sewing club and the Support our Troops club! It's funny - the house that we looked at had just had an offer put in on it that morning. It's a gentleman who met a lady that lives in the same community. She's selling hers, he's selling his and they are moving into a bigger house still in the same community! My mom was like alrighty then, maybe I can meet someone too lol!
B'Nuke - love the pictures, even if mine is ET. Glad the community for your mom looks like it will work out. I would love to have that type of place to move to. If OKC would just put in a 55+ retirement community like that downtown, with all the amenities then my husband and I would both be happy!
NancyJo - my car would have been stuck outside all night long as there is no room in the inn (garage) for a car. 40 + years of stuff from my parent's and aunt / uncles's estate!
My son texted me after PT today, A school graduation date for 1801-T has been moved from March 30 to April 6th. So, it appears they most likely are all moving down the way by a week. Hope this helps some - but be sure to double check with sailor.
B'sNukeMoM⚓️MM - That is AWESOME!!! So nice to feel good about where your mom is going to be living and that she will be engaged. Sounds like a place I want to move to. :-)
Don't envy the move or packing though. For every year you live some place, the stuff just stacks up and then the clean out when you move is always a nightmare - the longer you've lived there, the bigger the nightmare. Good luck!!!
soccermom - definitely not looking forward to packing or the move. My mom has a lot of stuff accumulated (my step-dad never threw away anything!). I've asked her to start sorting through things - keep, donate, toss. We'll see how that goes.
My mother-in-law took a creative path in "sharing" some of the items she had accumulated over the years. She took items that were important to her, but not needed, and wrapped them at Christmas time. Each grandchild (16) took a package to open. Now they each have a treasure, and a story to go along with it.
Pooh's Mom - what a wonderful idea you MIL had. I wish that was something my Mom had been able to think of.
I love my Ozarks, and miss the seasons a lot!! I grew up on the edge of the Ozarks, in Rolla, Mo. In OK, my sons say we don't have but two seasons, summer and winter and they are usually fighting each other, trying to figure out which one is going to win.
I certainly understand the pain of cleaning out a loved one's house after they have died. After both my maternal grandparents died we had to go through their old (built in the 1700s) house they had lived in for 50+ years. It was a big, old, wonderful house with all the nooks and crannies you can imagine (maybe more!), each filled to the brim with old junk. My mom has always had a very hard time parting with any old family keepsakes, but now that she's developed dementia it's much, much worse. We got a friend of hers to go through things with her at her pace (s--l--o--w--l--y) while the rest of us quickly made decision about all the rest of the stuff: keep, donate, trash. It was a huge project. The fact that it was 3000 miles from where any of us live just made it harder.
In news closer to home... My kitchen started a major remodel this week. Right now it is torn down to the studs and sub-floor. An old, unused chimney was also taken down. I'm more than a little bit irritated at the company that did the demolition. They put holes in the plaster in a bedroom and stairwell that are not part of the kitchen project, and did significant damage to the softwood floors in my oldest child's room, the upstairs closet (a large, funky walk-thru type), and most noticeably, the upstairs hall. In addition to being angry that it happened I'm really pissed that no one told me about it before they left. I was busy in another room babysitting a 2.5 y.o and a 3 month old so didn't even think to check before they left. BIG mistake. If this is just the first 2 days of this project, I'm not looking forward to the rest!! Sigh. I'm trying to remember: Semper Gumby.
The Ozarks are so beautiful. A lot of Nebraskans visit there b/c it's so close to us. Pool'sMom, good choice. If you ladies ever want to do a meet-up centrally between MO and OK or thereabouts, I would love to come from NE and join in. At one time some of us who live in IA, MN, and NE talked of meeting and then it fell through. When we live relatively close to each other, a meeting would be fun!
My grandmother handed out stuff to her children and grandchildren in her waning years. I treasure what I have. She had a lot of descendants so we each only got a single piece of decorative dishes or glassware but it's cool.
PacNWMom, I don't know how you clean out a house from cross country. What we do for love.
Sailor not saying much from the Pacific. That boy! But I know his wife has heard from him and that's OK. And while his emails are short, at least I hear something npw and then.
ps B'sNuke, senior love. How sweet! My mother met a gentleman in assisted living and they were sweet on each other but he eventually had to move to a nursing home that supplied more care. They missed each other but Mom always insisted there was never anyone but Dad for her. If your mom is interested in diving into love again, it could happen!
Chipmuck - That's funny about Summer and Winter fighting in Oklahoma. I grew up in mostly Oklahoma. When I first moved to Florida, my mother would send photos of fall since she knew I missed it.
As for Missouri, I just received my Teacher's Certification through reciprocity. Funny fact is it expires in 2117. Don't think I'll be needing it that long. I do know where Rolla, MO is located from looking at potential schools.
PacNWmom - I don't envy you for having to clear out belongings from 3000 miles away. That's terrible that additional damage was made during the demo for the kitchen. Has the company agreed to make the necessary repairs? Hope so!
MoMom - That's great that you love MO! We are looking forward to the change of pace. We are looking in SW Mo area. I'm not opposed to Jefferson City area, but don't want to be teaching in St. Louis or KC area.
My dad I'd in a senior community. He's 89 and as I think I mentioned earlier my mom has been gone for 16 years. The lady across the hall was hitting on him and he told my brother and I she was wasting her time. I told him it didn't matter to me except I wasn't sharing the family farm and business with anyone except my brother.
Oh wow! I received an email this morning from an army Sgt who needs my "corporation" in moving 10.5 million into the US from Afghanistan. My lucky day! But how did she know I had a corporation?
Paul - no smooth cast iron pans that I know of but if something turns up in the garage I'll keep you in mind! Oh and it is your lucky day ~ wink wink ;-D What a special email lol!
My MIL has been giving us all little "treasures" for the last few years . My FIL passed away about 7 years ago and she's been going through items - it's been very special. There's 4 kids with spouses and 6 grandkids so every year she passes on something.
PacNWmom - wow, can't even imagine trying to help clean out a house from 3000 miles away. I'm stressing about it and my mom is only about 20 miles away lol! I guess it's mainly because I'm an only child and have no one else to help! My mom still has her wits about her (she just turned 77) and she can help out so at least I have that going for me. And thankfully my hubby is a big help too. Youngest son is here to help, I just wish that B was closer - he is the closest to my mom of my boys. I'm sorry that your workers did damage to your house - and not to say anything - wow! What happened to pride in workmanship?
NancyJo - glad you're getting emails even if they are short! Hopefully soon he'll be able to get topside and make a call :) Remember, one day closer!
soccermom19, I say that red underwear counts, you just may wish to refrain from showing it to others unless it's in your job requirement or your natural tendency.
My dad lived in an apartment attached to our garage. He started trying to give everything away and since I hated for his apartment to be empty I told him that I'd get it when he was done. He thought that was fine, but what I should have done was put my name on my treasures. When my sisters visited he told them to take stuff too, and they took almost everything that had been earmarked for me. My mom had grandma's tea cup collection and we all knew which were to be ours. My darn sisters took everyone made in occupied Japan. Nothing serious, just annoying.
You never know. Did I tell you about the time I met B'sNukeMom and Oleander in Las Vegas? They told me they'd be standing outside Planet Hollywood. There they were and I'm pretty sure showing their underwear was a requirement, I just wish they'd waited until after they'd gotten off work to meet up with me....
NancyJo - Thanks for the Ozarks encouragement. I'm a teacher and so I don't know if we will relocate this summer or next. I'm just open to new chapters. Or I should saw WE - the family is open to new chapters. Once I get there, then we can start doing a shout out to arrange a meeting.
Nice that you got a treasure from your Grandmother!

I do not think I would want to serve on the Jimmy Carter. It would likely suffer from overinflation and be destined to lackluster performance.
Having said that I also want to make it clear I am very proud of the crew of the Jimmy Carter as I am the crew of every other vessel!

Don't forget to wear your RED tomorrow!

Got my red on!

Hope so!

Hi all - Happy Friday! I've got my RED on too!

And - does red underwear count for Friday's??? :-)
Jan 19, 2018
JayDee659
soccermom19, I say that red underwear counts, you just may wish to refrain from showing it to others unless it's in your job requirement or your natural tendency.
