I don’t know about Jeff City area schools. I’ve been pretty happy with our schools here in Springfield, but Nixa, just south of Springfield, is one of the best school districts in the state. Then, of course, we’re right by Branson, and The Wonders of Wildlife museum/aquarium recently opened here. Lots to do and see.
NancyJo, B'sNukeMom and I were standing outside waiting on Oleander and we noticed those two ladies. So B's says to me "hey I'll stand here and you pretend you're taking my picture, but get the girls instead". Haha. I think we each sent it to our husbands and said "thought you'd like a picture of the Navy moms that I am meeting in Vegas".
I would use my hairbrush to whack my sailor across the behind when she got out of line. One time the hairbrush broke (it was old). The big joke is when I need a new hairbrush I'll ask my sailor if I can try it out on her butt first.
I've never been to the Ozarks but it's on my list. I grew up reading Laura Ingalls Wilder and would love to see her home in the Ozarks.
You guys are posting so fast I can't keep up. PacNWMom, I'm sorry for your remodel troubles. That definitely should not happen and they need to fix it at no charge. Good luck.
Paul, you are hilarious! I have no trouble thinking the spoon got action when you were growing up. My BIL's business was classic car restoration and the garage attached to their house is a deep 4-car, plus he has a shop in back that holds 4 more. And his actual shop was in a different location. I bet you and he would have a lot to talk about. Boys and their toys. Plus, I know what a corn hook is! We had some on the farm growing up but of course it was way past time that people still used them. I'm not that old! Oh the memories.
My dad passed 11 years ago - wait how did it get to be 11 years? In any case when he died my husband was working in Florida and I just could not bring myself to go into dad's apartment alone and clear out his stuff. It's all still there. It's on our list for this summer. Not looking forward to it.
TahoeZephyr - that was my father's study, along with the file cabinets upstairs and downstairs. And all the magazines. Thankfully, Rolla, has a wonderful recycling center!! - But it is also my house and why my kids are minimalists, and I should be working on organizing instead of chatting on the computer!
So for all you folks out there fussing about disagreements on who gets what when the parents die, my ex-sister (yes, you can declare that to be an ex- in my book) took everything. Absolutely everything. Dad died in 2007, she took everything. Mom died in 2012 and she did it again. [mom and dad had separated so, separated homes] During my mom's wake, she came up to me and handed me my mom's diamond ring and said this was specified so she had to give it to me. There were only 2 things specified, I get the ring and my brother get the car. My mom had already titled it over, so no getting around it. When I took a look the ring, I just shook my head. She took the real diamond out and put in a fake one, like I wouldn't know the difference. While my mom was failing, she told her that she needed to put the house in both her own name and my sister's name to avoid inheritance tax. During her last days, my mom told me that she did that but she said that everything was still supposed to be split. I told my mom, I love you but have you met your oldest daughter? And sure enough she took that too and claimed it was supposed to be for her. The only thing in the end that was a surprise to me was that my brother was surprised. And to add insult to injury, she stiffed the funeral home who then took the 3 of us to court and my brother said, I'll pay for a place to bury her because my sister took the plot deed with one space left next to my dad and said that was for her. He had died first and she found the deed and took it to the cemetery and told them she was the only surviving heir and to put it in her name. She wanted a place to be. So my brother bought a plot across from my dad. This is the abridged version. I think I will write a book some day
oh soccermom - this breaks my heart reading your post. It's really sad that siblings can do this to one another, but I guess it happens more often than we know. I guess maybe there is some positive to me being an only child!
NancyJo - and yes, like JayDee said - these lovely ladies were standing right outside the hotel entrance and we did take pictures and send them to our husbands saying they were the Navy mom's we were meeting. Mine got a real kick out of it as I'm sure JayDee's did ;-D (This was mild compared to some of the others out there!)
Soccermom I have an ex-sister too. She milked my dad of $235,000 and sent it to some clown on the internet along with another $175,000 that she stole from various places. She's currently in jail with sentencing next Friday.
And my dad wouldn't write her out of the will even after all that. I just don't get it!
Oh people. Families are wonderful but all it takes is 1 bad apple and everything goes to hell. My sister got hit with a scam, long story, that cost her and her husband $9,000. Small potatoes to some but a lot to them. Because the scammers used our late mother's estate as a hook, my sister brought it to the family but no one wanted to contribute to a scam. Again, long story. The last time I spoke w/ her about it, trying to suggest solutions, she said she and her husband will never speak of it again. Her family is too important to her to jeopardize it over money. What an angel she is.
Every family has something. I'm sorry for the trouble you all have had. There is just no understanding people who will screw their families like that. Embrace the ones you love and let the others go.
soccermom, it's so sad when something like that happens...we went through a similar experience when my granddad passed - my aunt (my dad's sister) went in the house without telling anyone and took everything she thought was valuable in $$ (including an antique desk that was supposed to be my dad's) and left two boxes of what she thought was junk behind, one with my dad's name and one for my uncle. The "junk" boxes may not have been worth any money, but we did find some things that were valuable to us - we were just glad she didn't throw them away! It was really sad, because our previously close extended family never really got together again after that...:(
Yes, it is bad. But I knew it was going to happen. She did not just do that to me and my brother. She did it to her ex-husbands children. After the divorce, when he got really ill, she took him in and not remarrying but still figuring out a way to get all his funds, and then my dad who didn't have much, but she took all of it and so when it got to my mom, it was like I was expecting it. Only to find out when I related to a step cousin that she tried to do that when my uncle died, going over to his wife and saying that she and her children from a prior marriage were not entitled and that she needed to sign over the house. When I heard my cousin relate that to me, I almost fell on the floor. So she is destined for a special place in hell. She called me after the fact and I told her that she chose money over family and when if she wanted to make it right and give me the diamond I'll see about talking to her. And really - I don't want or need a diamond. She is just bad news. Do any of you out there remember the cartoon show Rug Rats? Remember Angelica. That was her growing up. She was 4 years older than me and took me to the park when I was 4 and I still remember to this day. She told me over and over we are lost and we are never going to see our folks again. And the harder I cried, the more she said it. At 4 years old I wound up with a migraine from that. Folks didn't think that was possible until confirmed by the doctor that it was a migraine - in a 4 year old. Yep, she's a piece of work. So I am much happier without that in my life. She got money. I got peace.
bigsky21 - That is sad. People are so greedy sometimes. It comes down to what you value most. For some it will just be the money and for some they just value the love of a family. And as for me, that is far more important.
NancyJo - WHAT A JOY that you have hand-written recipes that belonged to your grandmother! You could scan them if you have a printer and make such great gifts for your kids.
MoMom - I would LOVE to land in Nixa's school district! I'm not opposed to Springfield, but am trying to get away from the big city type schools. Would love to be at a school that actually disciplines kids for telling me, "F*** YOU!" It's only happened about three times, but no discipline occurred.
JayDee - Funny story about breaking the hairbrush! My mom broke one swinging it at my sister, but hit the wall instead. As for the wooden spoon, my 17 year old took it out of the drawer one day, walked by me and gently whacked me on the butt. I KNEW EXACTLY what I had been whacked with! You don't forget that feeling, even at 52 years old. LOL! I also would love to visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder home in Missouri. My 3rd grade teacher read the books to us and I was in a trance the entire time. I would meet up with her as an adult and have lunch when I was in town. She told me she always thought I would grow up to be an author. I cherish those memories, as she has now passed on. Best wishes as you clear out your father's apartment. I wish you tears of sweet memories, and endearing times.
TahoeZephyr - Your photo looks like my MOM'S house when she passed. I'm surprised the walls weren't bulging!
SoccerMom - I'll stamp an official paper granting your divorce from your sister. Awful! Just awful! How do some people live with their choices? You are so much better off without her.
B'sNuke - YES! There is officially an upside to being an only child!
There are other nearby communities with good schools. Republic and Willard are two that come to mind. We still have kind of a small town mentality here in Springfield, but it would probably depend on the particular school. What do you teach?
Regarding pay and possible shutdown - since I had this very conversation with my son this morning. He had an email or some form of communication from Navy Federal Credit Union. They offer a 0% interest loans, which do have to be requested, but NFCU will deposit the amount of your previous direct DOD deposit into their account for up to $6,000.00. As soon as the DOD deposit goes through, they will then withdraw the amount of their loan.
As I told my son and husband, this is a good faith loan, to help their members make sure they don't bounce any checks, or are not able to make good on other loan payments, but I am sure it is reassuring for those with families, and wives or mothers especially who might be worried. It is something that has to be applied for but a benefit that NFCU offers their military members.
quick question- boxing stuff up to ship to my SR when he heads to A school, he asked me to send a comforter set, guessing he’s pretty cold up there to ask for that, I know I can send sheets but didn’t know about outer bedding?
Tracie- I would not send your SR anything to A school until he gets there to see what he has for his BEQ (Bachelor Enlisted Quarters). GC (Goose Creek) is not nearly as cold as GL is, and my son had told me that he had blankets. Also, you need to know the address to send to your son - did you find that in our files here? I don't know how long the mailroom at GC will hold large pkg for sailors that have not arrived yet, especially if they might get held in THU. Also, the mail room is not nearby so they have to carry their pkgs back. I say all that, but it is still okay to send things to GC, I would just wait on the comforter set. When is his PIR?
Regarding budget shutdown and pay, my sailor shared this with me this AM. If they have a NFCU (Navy Federal Credit Union) account, they should have been emailed or it maybe on their website, information on how to apply for a 0% loan that will deposit the same amount as their most recent DOD payment into their account, up to a limit. Once they receive their actual deposit from the government, then NFCU will withdraw the funds that they loaned their members.
If you have someone at boot camp, they will not be able to access their bank, most likely. But if you are joint or authorized user on their account, or have a POA that NFCU has approved, you should be able to check with the bank and see what this loan entails, if it becomes needful.
Thanks all for the answers about A school graduation. I made the reservations at a hotel that I can cancel just in case, but I was happy to hear that the ceremony would not be affected. I am looking forward to being in GC in a couple weeks!
If we accept a friend request and email that one from our inbox area, is it ok then to share cities in which one lives, phone numbers, or last names? I know we don't here as it's too public, but the emails through this site are secure, correct?
Chipmunk—Thanks for response! His PIR is 2/09 I’m not shipping until I know his feet have hit the ground there cuz I’ve learned it’s not a done deal until it’s a for sure done deal.
Your thghts were my thghts on comforter/blanket thing gonna be heckuva lot warmer at GC and he’s prolly still acclimating to cold climate and missing his 70 degree winters.
again thanks all y’all, i’m learning all kinds of things here really helpful... ok minus the underwear photo haha
Tracie - regarding blanket needs in GC...my son has been there since early November and says he had to get some extra blankets at the NEX to stay warm; seems the heating system is not optimal in his BEQ (Nautilus), plus there has been such unusually cold weather in the south lately! He can walk to the NEX (and Subway/Panda Express), so those options seem to meet his needs :)
Howdy! My son just PIR'd this past Friday and flew in to GC last night. We were unable to give him his stuff, as we flew from a different airport. He has no personal way of communicating with us, so, without readying all the FAQ.s (mainly because I can't find them) is there an address, or should I wait until he has quarters. Also, how long until he gets quarters. He had several nukes in his division, too. Any idea when he will start classes or how long his hold will be?
lazerguppie, hopefully he will call you from a pay phone there or someone’s cell phone. I would wait to hear from him what his address is before sending anything. Not all of the mail personnel work hard to unite sailors with their packages and I would hate for it to come back to you. It’s usually at least a week before they class up depending on their rating.
lazerguppie - They can be in INDOC for a few days up to even almost a month. And even after that, my son said that I could have still sent mail to him with the INDOC address, when I didn't know what his class number was at first.
MM & EMs are Firemen so they are addressed: FN
ET are Seaman so they are addressed: SN
SN First Name, Last Name INDOC (once you know their class number it will go here) 101 NNPTC Circle Goose Creek, SC 29445
They do have access to computers in the lounge, but it can be difficult. If he had a calling card he hopefully will call you soon. My son was pretty busy his first weekend there and also was just glad to get to sleep some.
I forgot to mention that my son was INDOC for almost a month, and he did not have issues with getting his mail. Others may not have had the same experience. If you do talk to him, you might let him know when you plan to mail something so he can be watching for a notification from the mailroom to pick up his package.
Also, shipping with a tracking number is helpful. Amazon that is usually sent UPS was trying to deliver on MLK day which was a mail holiday and they sent a note that the pkg was undeliverable. The next day they said it was delivered, so I knew it was because I think UPS still has to drop pkgs off at the mailroom.
I see a few have mentioned no phones and potentially the need to use the computers provided. My understanding is that they are authorized to take their phones and laptops to A school. Is this correct?
Shoppinmomma, yes they can have phones, lap tops and their gaming systems. Since their required study time can only be done in the Rickover their free time is truly free.
lazerguppie - to answer your other questions. Your son will be issued his BEQ (Bachelor Enlisted Quarters) immediately upon arrival at GC. Generally they are housed with others of the same rating, but not always. They may be with someone new like them, but most likely will be bunked with someone who has been there. My son's BEQ is 2 in a room with another room sharing a bath.
Their address is associated with their class or INDOC as I indicated earlier, not with their living quarters.
Also, in case you didn't catch it can be anywhere from the following Mon to a month or so upon arrival at GC before a sailor will "class up". It seems like the MM's generally class up faster than EM or ET, but that could just be amongst the ladies that I know. My son PIR'd with another, he flew to GC the Sat after graduation, the other was held in GL, but the one in GL classed up before my son and they both have the same rating. And his last name is after my son, but he was in an earlier div, in that TG than my son. There just is no way of knowing, exactly when someone will class up.
I would at least get a letter mailed to him quickly so you can share your concerns with him. Ask him some fill in the blank questions and make sure that he is receiving his mail and you want to send his phone to him and how is he able to communicate with you, or can he at least call you.
The following gives you a rough idea of what your sailor's day will look like. It can be different for the various ratings.
Nuke A School daily schedule-a sailor's perspective-from 2017
Also, in the same title discussion above there is some further information for new moms as well. If you have other questions feel free to post there and I will see it come into my home email.
shoppinmomma - Like JayDee said, they are able to have their phones, etc. The question was because someone had been unable to give their son a phone at the airport and so I was sharing other ways that their sailor could communicate with them until able to get a phone or computer to them.
Also, my son did not have a laptop and we had not purchased one for him beforehand. He was able to take liberty time on a weekend and go to the Best Buy in Charleston and purchase one. Then he could hook up to the internet in the lounge of his BEQ and communicate with us, instead of having to wait on the other available computers.

Howdy all!
quick question- boxing stuff up to ship to my SR when he heads to A school, he asked me to send a comforter set, guessing he’s pretty cold up there to ask for that, I know I can send sheets but didn’t know about outer bedding?
Thanks

Rime
If we accept a friend request and email that one from our inbox area, is it ok then to share cities in which one lives, phone numbers, or last names? I know we don't here as it's too public, but the emails through this site are secure, correct?

Rime you can as you see fit. Be aware that sometimes people pretend to be something they aren't. Just always be careful.

Found the address in the pages. Is it current?

lazerguppie, hopefully he will call you from a pay phone there or someone’s cell phone. I would wait to hear from him what his address is before sending anything. Not all of the mail personnel work hard to unite sailors with their packages and I would hate for it to come back to you. It’s usually at least a week before they class up depending on their rating.

lazerguppie - You should be able to send to the Indoc address.

lazerguppie - They can be in INDOC for a few days up to even almost a month. And even after that, my son said that I could have still sent mail to him with the INDOC address, when I didn't know what his class number was at first.
MM & EMs are Firemen so they are addressed: FN
ET are Seaman so they are addressed: SN
SN First Name, Last Name
INDOC (once you know their class number it will go here)
101 NNPTC Circle
Goose Creek, SC 29445
