I didn't know about halfway boxes. My son will.soon be on a sub. Is there a place to.get the info on where to send these boxes, and what to put in them?
Subs are under water and silent so no letter drops or care package drops. The Obundsman for the sub should send notice when to send them and where. Ours asks for volunteers to send adopt a sailor boxes too for those that do not have anyone to send them one. I will be sending one to my son and another for an adopted sailor. Occasionally when they surface at a port she will have us all send her cards to be brought to the sub. I also generally get a nice long phone call when they have some shore time.
Hello - I posted this in my PIR group too - but many times you all are more active! LOL
Need some help please!
WHat type of bag should I bring my sons phone and laptop in? I have read there are some rules - like they can't have a backpack in uniform? Is this true?
Also - can we bring him his regular tennis shoes for A school and travelling to the airport or is this something we need to ship to him at A school or something he can't have?
Kai cat, my daughter stuffed her tennis shosh into her duffel bag Since she knew we were bringing them she packed with that in mind. She tucked her phone in her backback. Everything else was shipped to GC. Not sure they can have an extra bag. My daughter couldn't but that was 2 years ago. They don't need too much anyway .
kai cat - our son graduated BC last April. We had his laptop and a couple things in his Navy backpack that they gave him when he first signed up and we brought him a few other things that were in a red cloth bag. I thought he was going to put some of the stuff in his seabag or backpack but he had checked all of his navy issue items by the time we got to the airport (we didn't get there right when he did because we knew we were going to have all day Saturday at the airport with him). Anyway since he had checked all of his navy issue bags he was able to take both the little backpack and the red bag with him as carry on. But since he was in dress uniform he carried the backpack - he did not put it on his back. And he did tell us later that it would have been better if the red bag had not been red - like a simple black bag. Had we know he was going to keep it in the bag we would have brought it in a different bag - lol.
But it was no problem checking all of his navy issue bags allowing him to carry on what we brought. I know they have to manage all of there own bags at the other end - not sure how he did it but he did it. Hope this helps.
I don't think he can carry the leatherman on the plane, unless it is in checked luggage. You might want to mail that once you get his address. Flat rate boxes from USPS are great for sending things out - especially heavy stuff.
kai cat - I had to look up leatherman - I guess it is a multi-use tool, I agree with 3B'smom - wait on that, both for verification at Nuke school and TSA rules. Keep in mind anything that goes to GC either has to eventually go to the ship/sub, if allowed, or gets returned back home or sold.
Re: black backpack, it may have been a comment of mine that confused you. The backpack they are issued, is not considered part of their dress uniform, so they are not allowed to wear it on their back. They wear the seabag and had to carry their garment bag and backpack from the USO holding area at O'Hare to their baggage check in. Most checked their seabags and garment bags and kept their backpack as a carryon which still could not be worn at all since they fly in their dress uniform. I don't know if each airline is different but in Aug. AA was allowing 5 free checked bags for military moving on orders. Most just had their two. And one carryon.
They are allowed to have their own tennis shoes for PT, and they are allowed to wear civilian clothes in the BEQ, but not in public until they phase up. I had a small black drawstring bag with my son's cell phone, tennis shoes, an extra pair of civilian shorts and a t-shirt. He put those in his backpack. Then I shipped from the store two extra pair of T-shoes with free shipping.
I did not understand the Priority Mail flat rate boxes when I was mailing clothes and such, so be sure to look into that. Because the extra weight on a regular box and then the tracking cost me extra. You can pick up the Priority Boxes at the PO and take them home, so you can pack and then ship.
Hello @ Chipmunk. My son, Three Red Striped Sailor has return along two other Sailors on a carpool via an also a NNMom for her son who has mentions also going S.C. for Nuke school just as same of all "The Three Musketeers", " Military Vet. - "Mother S" of Connecticut has her Sailor along siblings ... Would like to know a bit more of where and when my sailor can get delivery from his both parents...(?) And, how do we find out the address as we forgot to ask our sailor. Our sailor ask for certain items be deliver to him but the address we don't have to his A school @ S.C.(?)
TahoeZephyr, thanks for the update. It's the practical details that surprise me. Why make getting chow so hard? I imagine for a guy with a brain the mundane chores they assign in DPT might be maddening. As in all else, all in navy time. <sigh> This too shall pass.
Pooh'smom, I love that you got family pics. I'm finding as time goes by and kids scatter that gets harder and harder. Precious memories.
CoTwin, being a carrier mom myself I guess I didn't realize mail and pkgs were handled differently. I guess I knew about email but sheesh. Well, being under the surface influences everything. My heart goes out to you. I need to quit complaining about my poor communicator. At least he gets my pkgs and emails. {{hugs}} Sea Sister as deployment looms. Keep your blue candle going.
Chipmunk, good info on boxes. If you go online to USPS, you can order a set of 10 flat rate boxes delivered to your door for free. And those boxes hold a lot. My daughter put together a box and thought she had plenty but there is still room so I'm adding to it. My son particularly appreciates bottles of sauce to liven the food. They love the water flavorings since all the water tastes funny cuz it's all desalinized sea water. He said don't send pop tarts since that is the one food item that is readily available to them. Oh, and baked good rock, even if they show up as crumbs.
Hi all - Happy Monday and congrats to all the Philly Fans! Did you all catch Pink singing the National Anthem - for someone who had the flu I thought she did an amazing job! Gave me goosebumps!!

PedAlQueen - MM and EMs are addressed as Firemen - FN, and ETs are addressed as Seamen - SN
If all the sailors arrived at GC, then you may start mailing pkgs, or letters to their INDOC address. Once they class up, they should have a class number that will replace the INDOC line.
Thank You also at B'sNukeMomMM, yet my concern is the address(?) -- my son is school now since post P.I.R. Day1 today Monday after a Sunday ( -- is this The SUNDAY, he gets chance to relax a bit and more rest+recovery!!! -- with hopes it was...) .... My son has ordered his Dad to sent him stuff yet my hubby that moment was just agreeing as also Iam nearby yet we still don't know the location or mailing address to deliver the certain necessities he want sent..
@ B'sNukeMomMMM, where do you sent yours (?) As Iam directly asking you for some supportive answer...My Sailor three-red striped has mentions of six months school -- "MM" he says...and from there he decided certain projecrs or assign location after that...of another training schooling I believe that is what it is...("A school", ...& so forth...)
Help please...my son really needs those items
..critically important necessities...@ B'sNukeMomMM ... : our family's U.S.S. is also "MM" according to him being a three are do stripes Saior... He also mentions his letters take a long time to arrive here in CALI "a week and half!" So, Iam trying to reach out through here via NAVYMoms group for some supportive direct answer -- for U.S.S. who is currently just boarding for A school @ SC, if anyone very much knowledgeable/can confirm to delivery address so, my son can get his delivery as soon as possible..(FYI, Iam so trying really hard to respects his confidentiality yet a thin line to get what he orders us to have certain necessity deliver to him A.S.A.P. via some supportive help through here...) He did confirmed at boot camp "there is no food" meaning not real foods...and another Sailor from our shuttle chatted with us parents/grandma (or our own Sailor was at front seated as I have encourage him so + to give a space also with respects he needed the rest I can totally feel and understand my son!)
PedAlQueen - so from what I gather your son is in Goose Creek now? Getting ready to start A school, correct? He will stay in Goose Creek, SC for both his A school and his Power school so he will be there for a while. The address information that Chipmunk posted below is correct - you can also verify it by looking at the pages to the right (12) under the member profiles. Click on "Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival to GC" (I recommend you look through all the files to get an idea of what is going on).
Letters could take some time to arrive - mine didn't write letters home once he got to GC - we would either talk/text. I did send him a package about once a month via the USPS If it fits, it ships and those would usually get to him within 2 days - and that was me shipping from CA. They don't always get to pick them up in the mail room right away though.
Does he not have his phone yet - is that what you are trying to send? Best bet would be to talk to him if he does have his phone.
Kai Cat - PT is Physical Training. I am not sure what all they do, since they also run a 5K midweek at GC. But my son as an ET has PT 2x/ week.
Hang in there!! News should come soon - timing for the I'm a Sailor call all depends on when their division went into BS. Pay attention in your PIR group. Keep yourself busy packing, and making sure you have everything ready for your trip. Safe travels!!
PedAlQueen, I can see the anxiety you are feeling about your son. I know easier said than done but please try not to worry too much. Moms always worry but the navy takes good care of our sailors.The advice already given here is correct. My son is MM also and I have been in your place. You have the address so you can send him anything he needs. Communication isn't always what we want it to be but once you hear from your son in GC you will feel better, I think. Hang in there! {hugs}
Hi @NancyJo Thank you for kind understanding. My son's small item is still here - my hubby has not done was my son ordered of us as the traffic before and after work is part of our daily challenges ...So, now Iam gonna have to initiate delivery on my day off day since the timing half the day before work is critical time issues due to daily ordeals of traffic galore all the time! Is why most of his letters goes to the quiet area his grandMA's place (where his cousins can look after it yet the mailings from him takes a great while to get here in CALI...) Our immediate area is very "iffy" yet is where our family's Sailor my son's hometown he grew up with and some friends he went to school with back then around our immediate vicinity...
Address again please...I just cleared a lot of stuff my from emails....-- to clean up and gain space for data...and for safety/security keeping everything confidential.

So I received a call from my son today, but he immediately said this is not the call I was expecting!
He did fail his PFA (I am assuming this because it was a 30 second scripted call) and he was moved to a new PIR date and division in March.
I want to thank everyone in here for your answers, thoughts, information, and prayers as he continues on in Boot camp for 4 more weeks to get that run under control!
I am really sad about it - because I know he is sad - but I feel happy that now his new PIR has 4 guests allowed!
Kai cat- they cannot take electronics back on base after liberty when they PIR. We flew out of separate airports, so I ended up having to ship his laptop and phone, since I wasn't going to see him on Sat. So, you will have to keep her electronics until the airport or ship later.
kai cat - they will work with him to get him to pass the run. Stay positive for him - keep sending him encouraging letters and we'll all keep praying for him too! Don't be sad - everything happens for a reason - he's got this!
THanks for the encouraging comments ladies - just what I need. It is hard to keep in mind that the mental part is way easier for him than the physical part!
Nancy Jo and Chipmunk (and any others who are following my sailor's transition)...indeed, it is odd that there is no mess hall at DTP! But I fear not - my son says he actually gained some weight while at A School due to the long study hours and the primary source of quick food being the snack machines. He seems to have the duty van schedule down so getting to the other part of the base for meals does not seem to be a huge issue. When I spoke with him yesterday he indicated easy foods such as energy bars were helpful to get him through the morning. I will likely send him some Starbucks Via's for an instant start to the day in my next care package :) As for other amenities at DTP, there is a laundry facility, game room, and a work out center. Apparently the WiFi is a bit of a problem for his laptop connection...
As for a "day in the life", it seems he will have 2 "duty days" per week, which appears to entail being "on duty" and basically at the mercy of whomever needs something done for a 24 hour time frame; on these days he has to muster 5 times (the first around 07:00 I think) and he cannot leave the base during these days; on "non-duty days" he has to muster 3 x (the first at 07:45) and can have usual evening liberty. Still not sure about a regular PT schedule.
For this week he says he is reporting for "watch training" so that he can retain his phase 3 privileges. And, incidentally, he did locate an email attachment with his transcript proving his completion of 4 years of NJROTC, so his E3 rating should stand.
Apparently there are about 200 sailors at DTP, so not as much work to go around as help, it appears. We are encouraging him to establish some sort of productive routine for his non-duty days, which hopefully will include some gym time. Also trying to get him to take care of a few nagging medical issues (ie ingrown toenails) that he could not find the time for at A School for fear of missing class work or a test. Still no word on his re-rate options. But he has made some quick buddies (as always) and seems in good spirits. Again, seems relieved that stress of the workload and lengthy study time has abated!
I will keep posting updated info as I receive it for anyone who is interested in learning a bit about "the dark side" - a small joke there...gotta keep smiling, right?
I am one very happy mom right now. Just got a phone call with my sailor. He sounded great. He was very happy and upbeat. He wanted to let me know that he is no longer 1752. He is now 1801. He was put back because of missing something due to a minor medical reason. He said it really doesn't matter because both those classes begin Power School at the same time. I guess it's not like A school where they begin all the time. So it just means he has less time to wait until the next Power School begins.
TahoeZephyr- thank you for your updates and keeping us posted!! It is very helpful to have some insight into DTP. Glad your son seems to be up beat and doing well. I would write more but I need to get to bed, but won't be able to respond much tomorrow.
Soccermom19 - I think your son may have moved to my son's class. 1801-T. He mentioned something about a roll in to his class, but I thought he said they also rolled out, so I might have misunderstood. He texted me this evening about 10:05 pm his time to say Goodnight, so I will have to check with him. Their grad date is April 6th!
PedAlQueen - Glad you were finally able to get the address. Yes, finding the time to pack a box and get it to the PO or other shipper, can take some doing.
Good night all!
Oh Kai Cat - I saw your post earlier - so sorry to hear about your son. Keep encouraging him. At least he is being given an opportunity to roll back and try for a new PIR and get his run down.
kai cat my daughter was telling me that she thought she'd messed up and failed her run when she looked at the time and saw she was over. She was about to slow down and just jog it in when another sailor ran up to her and told her to pick it up and keep going. Turns out she'd looked at the wrong clock and would have failed if they other sailor hadn't have pushed her along. Her thoughts on that incident were "just keep moving no matter what". I'm sure your son will make it! Just keep moving!
Oh the dreaded PT. Lots of nukes struggle there. Keep encouraging; it's the best we can do.
TahoeZephyr, that is a great note! You give a great picture of what the sailors in DPT experience. We've heard before about the down time being hard. It's always better to busy. Your advice to develop a routine is good. Sounds like he's adjusting OK so far. I'm so glad to hear it. And he needs to get those toes fixed. Ouch!
PedAlQueen, glad you have your problem figured out. You got this!
TahoeZephyr - Yes, encourage your son to get his feet taken care of. The one thing my son asked help on after PIR was for me to look at his toes and help with a similar issue, that a bunkmate had helped him at bc. It turns out that for the swim test their RDC or other superior, told them to cut their toenails to the quick basically, because if they scratched an officer or someone they would be in big trouble. So, I helped him continue to pamper his feet. Ironically, in INDOC they had a doctor come tell them about the pitfalls of improperly trimming toenails!!!!
TahoeZephyr - thanks for the info on DTP. I'm glad your son is figuring things out and especially glad he found his transcripts so he can remain an E3. Hopefully he will get info soon on a re-rate..... Would you mind re-posting your comment up above in Wears Large Hats discussion "Almost Made It" - or I can post it for you if you don't mind. It's good info and I don't want it to get lost in our main thread here.
soccermom - glad you got to hear from your son. Sounds like he's taking it all in stride - that's good!
just a quick note (I'm SWAMPED at work!!!)...for any who are interested the Falcon Heavy launch is today, live stream starts at 1:30pm ET on the spacex.com website.....

If all the sailors arrived at GC, then you may start mailing pkgs, or letters to their INDOC address. Once they class up, they should have a class number that will replace the INDOC line.

But I am so happy just to hear his voice.
Good night ladies.

Hi all - Happy Tuesday!
